We truly have to get our hands around this because they are educating the next generation that we are a racist nation and that will fundamentally put at risk our republic," said Mike Pompeo, the former U.S. secretary of state who also served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, congressman from Kansas and U.S. Army officer. Rumours are intensifying about Kim Jong-un's condition as a Chinese team including health care experts is dispatched into North Korea to treat him, Reuters reports. The trip by Chinese doctors and officials to Pyongyang comes after reports the North Korean leader was in a critical condition after cardiovascular surgery.A delegation including the medical staff and led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party's International Liaison Department left Beijing for North Korea on Thursday.Earlier in the week, South Korean news site Daily NK reported Kim was recovering after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure on April 12.US officials said they were told Kim's condition was critical after the surgery, although President Donald Trump has since cast doubt on the report.Seoul officials and a source within the Liaison Department have challenged reports Kim was gravely ill.Speculation about Kim's condition has escalated in the two weeks since he was last seen in public, at a politburo meeting on April 11.On April 15, he was conspicuous in his absence from birthday celebrations of the founder of the North Korean state, his grandfather and state founder Kim Il Sung.Kim has been out of the public eye for extended periods in the past, and North Korea's secretive nature allows few outsiders to assert confidently whether he might be unwell, let alone incapacitated. Still, questions about the North's political future are likely to grow if he fails to attend upcoming public events.Kim is the third generation of his family to rule North Korea, and a strong personality cult has been built around him, his father and grandfather. The family's mythical "Paektu" bloodline, named after the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula, is said to give only direct family members the right to rule the nation. That makes Kim's younger sister, senior ruling party official Kim Yo Jong, the most likely candidate to step in if her brother is gravely ill, incapacitated or dies. But some experts say a collective leadership, which could end the family's dynastic rule, could also be possible."Among the North's power elite, Kim Yo Jong has the highest chance to inherit power, and I think that possibility is more than 90 per cent," said analyst Cheong Seong-Chang at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea."North Korea is like a dynasty, and we can view the Paektu descent as royal blood so it's unlikely for anyone to raise any issue over Kim Yo Jong taking power."Believed to be in her early 30s, Kim Yo Jong is in charge of North Korea's propaganda affairs, and earlier this month was made an alternate member of the powerful Politburo. She has frequently appeared with her brother at public activities, standing out among elderly male officials. She accompanied Kim Jong Un on his high-stakes summits with President Donald Trump and other world leaders. Her proximity to him during those summits led many outsiders to believe she's essentially North Korea's No. 2 official."I think the basic assumption would be that maybe it would be someone in the family" to replace Kim Jong Un, US national security adviser Robert O'Brien told reporters this week."But again, it's too early to talk about that because we just don't know, you know, what condition Chairman Kim is in and we'll have to see how it plays out."The fact North Korea is an extremely patriarchal society has led some to wonder if Kim Yo Jong would only serve as a temporary figurehead and then be replaced by a collective leadership similar to ones established after the deaths of other Communist dictators."North Korean politics and the three hereditary power transfers have been male-centred. I wonder whether she can really overcome bloody socialist power struggles and exercise her power," said Nam Sung-wook, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.A collective leadership would likely be headed by Choe Ryong Hae, North Korea's ceremonial head of state who officially ranked No. 2 in the cou...

Inside the Life and Power of Kim Jong Un (0:32)Guest: Anna Fifield, Beijing Bureau Chief, Washington Post, Author of “The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un”North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended 2019 with a threat to resume nuclear weapons and long-range missile testing. That's bad news for negotiations to end North Korea's nuclear program entirely. But President Trump says he's optimistic a deal could still happen. Two unprecedented summits between President Trump and Chairman Kim in 2019, heightened interest in just who the secretive leader of North Korea is and how he came to power at such a young age. Washington Post Beijing bureau chief Anna Fifield spent a decade tracking down the answers for her book, “The Great Successor.” It came out last year and led to one of our favorite interviews of 2019. The day I spoke with Fifield, news had broken that Kim Jong Un's older half-brother was a CIA informant before his assassination. (Originally aired June 14, 2019).  Pro-Democracy Protests Rock Moscow, but Putin Remains Unshaken (24:04)Guest: Angela Stent, Director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies and Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Author “Putin's World: Russia Against the West and with the Rest”While America obsessed over the threat Russia poses to our politics and democracy, Russian President Vladimir Putin faced threats to his own power in 2019. Over the summer, there were large scale protests in Russia, particularly over the decision of Putin's political party to disqualify some opposition candidates from city council elections in Moscow. Even with that suppression, Putin's political allies went on to suffer embarrassing defeat in the Moscow elections. (Originally aired August 28, 2019).  China's Mass Incarceration of Muslim Uyghurs May Be a New Form of Ethnic Cleansing (37:27)Guest: Sean R. Roberts, Ph.D., Director and Associate Professor, International Development Studies Program, Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington UniversityIn 2019, the world learned of a massive campaign of suppression and imprisonment in Western China. The Chinese Communist Government views a Muslim ethnic group called Uyghurs(Wee-gores) as a terrorist threat. The Uyghurs claim a portion of Western China as their indigenous homeland. The Chinese government disagrees and has placed millions of people in that region under intense surveillance. Up to a million Muslim Uyghurs are believed to have been imprisoned in the so-called “re-education camps” outside scholars have compared to the boarding schools where Native American youth were sent to be “re-educated.” (Originally aired July 5, 2019).  Baking Your Own Happiness (50:44)Guest: Michael Platt, Head Baker, and Spokesperson for Michaels Desserts and Danita Platt, Michael's Mother“People underestimate the power of kids in general, and they certainly underestimate our power to do something about big problems.” That's a clip from a TEDx talk Michael gave not long after we spoke on Top of Mind. The big problem he's decided to tackle? Hunger. He started his bakery Michaels Desserts two years ago–when he was 11. For every cupcake or cookie, he sells, he donates one to someone in need. (Originally aired August 13, 2019).  Hiring with No Questions Asked (1:06:42)Guest: Mike Brady, President, and CEO, Greyston BakeryFor people who have served time behind bars, it can be very difficult to get a job. But there's a commercial bakery in New York that opts simply not to ask any questions about the background of people who apply. They call it “open hiring.” Greyston Bakery is known for its brownies –you've had them on Delta flights and in Ben and Jerry's ice cream. (Originally aired January 7, 2019).  What Has Become of the Last Blockbuster on Earth (1:23:52)Guest: Sandi Harding, General ManagerThe world's last Blockbuster video store is in Bend, Oregon. Your kids have no idea what life was like before Netflix and Disney+, do they? Browsing the DVDs on a Friday night, looking for something to watch. You're probably wondering what Blockbuster has to do with people doing good. But the store has become a delightful blast of nostalgia for tourists, and manager Sandi Mann believes it's important for maintaining human connection. (Originally aired March 20, 2019).

Darrell Castle talks about the Summit held in Singapore on June 12th between President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un of North Korea. Transcription / Notes NERVOUS IN NORWAY Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report.  Today is Friday, June 15, 2018, and on today's Report I will be talking about the summit meeting held on June 12th between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un of North Korea.  The two leaders met in Singapore and issued a joint statement of their agreement. I will quote from the four points of the agreement as follows: “The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S. – DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity”.  This point certainly has to be considered a positive.  New relations between the two countries have to be better than the old because worse than the old would be war, possibly nuclear war.  In fact, war has technically existed between North and South Korea for the last 70 years, so new relations are a welcome relief. “The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.”  This is again very good news because the opposite of peace is war and that's bad. “Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”  This one is a reference to the meeting held in April between the leaders of North and South Korea in which they pledged to work toward peace, etc.  Once again, to reaffirm that agreement is fantastic news for obvious reasons. “The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.”  It's about time this happened and hopefully it will bring closure to some of the families of the missing. President Trump decided to relate to his adversary as an equal, which now seems like a good idea.  He was criticized in the American press for recognizing Kim Jong Un as an equal by shaking his hand and sitting on the podium in equal status with him but what was he supposed to do, refuse his hand?  If he was expected to refuse the man's hand, and perhaps turn his back, then what would be the point of the summit? A reporter from Time Magazine asked the President if he now considered Kim Jong Un his equal and the President responded, “If I have to say I'm sitting on a stage with Chairman Kim and that's going to get us to save 30 million lives—maybe more than that—I'm willing to sit on that stage.  I'm willing to travel to Singapore very proudly, very gladly.”  Now that's a pretty good answer and will make it harder for the media to marginalize the meeting by saying that Kim won by having his picture taken with President Trump. President Trump obviously decided to approach this summit with a different attitude than did the Clinton and Obama administrations.  Those administrations and those Presidents basically just said look here's 10 billion dollars, now tell us you will use it to buy food and then just shut up until I'm out of office. President Trump decided instead to establish a friendship with the man in order to accomplish something of lasting significance.  Mr. Un apparently has a reputation for liking movies, so President Trump had a video made to show him what North Korea could actually be like in an atmosphere of peace.  It was a pretty good video.  I watched it and I enjoyed it, and apparently Mr. Kim enjoyed watching it as well.  The two leaders walked together for a while with their hands on each others' backs as two friends would.   Mr. Trump showed him something from the back of his car and others joined them to look at whatever it was. Later, the President said that he advised Mr. Un to look at it from a real estate standpoint.  “We were standing on a beautiful beach and I told him that instead of exploding cannon shells to imagine condominiums and hotels and places for p...
