The Shed Dogs finally talk about our very great, hugely enjoyable 50th high school grad reunion: what we thought, what we noticed, and how well we enjoyed it. Spoiler alert: it was just great. KJ then floors us by announcing that he's nominated for not one but two Leo awards (BC Film and TV industry awards). Realizing again that we are in the presence of acting greatness leads us to talking about what we are watching these days, and “Ripley” on Netflix comes in for some very warm acclaim indeed. Of course we mix in our usual bits of super valuable advice on how to live your lives, and finish by bidding farewell to the AM 730 traffic station, which left without saying goodbye. We look to you, listeners, to help fill the void they left. Okay, done, and thanks.Links: Shed Dogs; Leo Awards; Ripley (TV show); Extraordinary Attorney Woo; Roy Hennessy reminiscences of CKLG.

I love to talk TV and I really enjoy every exchange with Susan and Sharon, otherwise known as the 80s TV Ladies. When their podcast, 80s TV Ladies, launched, they invited me to be a guest. It was a blast and over the last two years, the two podcasts have furthered a shared exploration of how women have been represented on television and the impact that representation has had on society as a whole and females, of all ages, in particular. Like Advanced TV Herstory, their show features interviews and analyzes the work of women both in front of and behind the camera. Our podcasts aim to help listeners understand how our culture shapes the television shows we watch and, in turn, how those shows shape our culture. Listen in on this engaging and informative look behind the scenes as we discuss the motivations, joys, and challenges of creating podcasts that highlight the contributions of women in television. 80s TV LADIES Contacts Website – 80s TV Ladies - https://www.80stvladies.com/ Website – 134 West - https://134west.biz/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/80sTVLadies/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/80stvladies/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@80stvladies Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/80sTVLadies Awards 2024 Women in Podcasting, Nominee in Entertainment – VOTE at https://womeninpodcasting.net/80s-tv-ladies/ 2024 Webby Award – Best Indie Podcast 2023 People's Choice Podcast Awards - Best Art, Best TV & Film, Best Female Hosted MENTIONS Podcast Episodes 80s TV Ladies (24 May 2023) – Advanced TV Herstory w/ Cynthia Bemis Abrams, Part One - https://www.80stvladies.com/episode/episode-201-welcome-to-season-2-advanced-tv-herstory-w-cynthia-bemis-abram-part-1 80s TV Ladies (31 May 2023) – Advanced TV Herstory w/ Cynthia Bemis Abrams, Part Two - https://www.80stvladies.com/episode/episode-202-advanced-tv-herstory-aw-cynthia-bemis-abrams-part-two Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (11 Apr 2023) – Jane Fonda on Female Friendships - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jane-fonda-on-female-friendships/id1678559416?i=1000608248297 Shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cagney and Lacey, China Beach, Designing Women, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Grey's Anatomy, Lou Grant, My So-Called Life, Murphy Brown, Remington Steele, and Scarecrow and Mrs. King People Annie Potts, Barney Rosenzweig, Diane English, Eilish Zebrasky, Eugenie Ross-Leming, Geena Davis, Jean Smart, Juanita Bartlett, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, Melissa Roth, Neema Barnette, Sergio Perez, Sharon Gless, Shonda Rhimes, Stephanie Zimbalist, and Tyne Daly Books Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women by Susan Faludi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlash:_The_Undeclared_War_Against_American_Women Lou Grant: The Making of TV's Top Newspaper Drama by Douglass K. This episode, on the recommendation of an SLL listener, we're excited to do a deep dive into the Japanese Drama, Rinko-San Wants to Try. We get into how the show complicates conceptions of virginity, plays with the friends with benefits trope, and maybe get in our feelings a lil bit about a second female lead who really got under Ayanni's skin. As two people who study, analyze, and have a literal podcast about media, we stand in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike–along with their counterparts in other industries/countries, who also deserve fair wages and labor protections–none of the works we discuss here or in other episodes would exist. Episode 32 Books. Movies. TV shows. Most of them are structured using at least some, if not all, of the elements of The Hero's Journey. That includes Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the Netflix original South Korean show. This is one of my favorite things to watch on television. It's smart, heartwarming, poignant, interesting, romantic, and I love it! From the ratings and success, I'm definitely not the only one who thinks so. In this episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, Andy Lopata engages in a riveting dialogue with Samantha Hiew, an award-winning social entrepreneur, founder of ADHD Girls, and a reputed scientist. As a person diagnosed with ADHD, Tourette's, dyspraxia, and autism, Samantha shares her thought-provoking insights on the subject of neurodiversity. Neurodiversity covers a spectrum of neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD, autism, dyspraxia, and dyslexia. Participants' perception, learning, and information processing are all affected by these variances in brain function, which manifest uniquely in different individuals. However, Samantha emphasises that prevalent misconceptions and stereotypes, largely amplified by media and cultural portrayals, still tend to distort the narrative of neurodiversity. Assessing media representations of neurodiversity, Samantha notes that while they have garnered visibility, they often perpetuate inaccurate stereotypes. The conversation shifts to addressing portrayals of varied neurodivergent experiences in newer Asian productions such as The Extraordinary Attorney Woo, which authentically reflect the struggles neurodivergent individuals face. Samantha underscores the significance of an inclusive work environment that accommodates neurodiversity. From a workplace perspective, she underscores the significance of creating an inclusive environment that accommodates neurodiversity. An essential part of this involves offering reasonable adjustments tailored to individual needs, particularly those relating to executive functioning. These adaptations can help individuals manage their emotional regulation, organisation, and other interactions with their teams. Moreover, fostering a sense of belonging, psychological safety, and valuing an individual's contribution are all quintessential to supporting neurodivergent people and enabling them to thrive in the workplace. The discussion then turns to terminologies related to neurodiversity, particularly whether it should be considered a 'disability.' Samantha sees this term as failing to encapsulate the essence of the neurodiversity experience and believes that the issue arises from society's inaccessible systems disadvantaging neurodivergent individuals. With reference to the increased recognition of neurodivergence, Andy inquires if individuals may be overly self-labelling due to heightened awareness. Samantha responds by highlighting the challenges faced by many neurodivergent individuals in correctly labelling their conditions and receiving adequate support. She asserts that while individuals may seek labels to understand their experiences, implementing them in daily interactions and advocating for themselves on their own can be daunting. Effective communication of neurodiversity in the workplace becomes a critical discussion point. The tools for self-identification are important, but often the language to express the experiences and needs associated with neurodivergence is elusive. Samantha suggests establishing safe spaces and incorporating neurodiversity education into workplace training to support neurodivergent individuals and eliminate associated shame. The conversation then moves towards gender dysphoria within neurodiversity. Samantha reflects on her personal experiences as a woman and shares her insights on the gender bias prevalent in neurodiversity, asserting that many of these differences are rooted in underlying societal norms and patriarchal structures. Overall, this episode explores the landscape of neurodiversity, championing the need to understand, embrace, and celebrate it rather than seeing it as a challenge to be handled. Samantha's thoughtful insights underline the need for education, understanding, and acceptance for neurodivergent individuals to successfully navigate and thrive within their professional environment. "Though my life is unusual and peculiar, it is valuable and beautiful." Indeed.
A last-minute business trip to Jeju Island reveals the beginnings of a new romance and a road bump for another.
Two episodes filled with misogyny. Good think Woo Young-woo is a badass.
Every day Americans take the reliable supply of electricity for granted. Except during severe storms, we rarely, if ever, think that the lights might not turn on in the morning. But in some parts of the country, consumers face the threat of rolling blackouts, and sudden surges in the price of electricity. Nearly two years ago, nearly 300 people died when the Texas power grid partially failed during a winter cold snap. California came close to a grid collapse last summer. And New England might be in big trouble this coming winter. Energy analyst, author, and chemist, Meredith Angwin, is our guest in this episode of "How Do We Fix It?" Her latest book is “Shorting the Grid: The Hidden Fragility of our Electric Grid.” In recent years, our podcast co-host Jim Meigs has written extensively on energy, and says it's a bad idea to shut down nuclear power plants that supply large amounts of reliable energy and aren't dependent on the weather. But the threatened electricity grid crisis is not just about how we make power—it's how we deliver power to users. For big chunks of the country that system has changed radically in recent decades. Reforms that were meant to make our energy system more competitive backfired. The fragile gird matters more than at any time in memory for three reasons: - The need to decarbonize energy production to limit the future impacts of climate change. - Modern technology requires a big increase in electricity output.- The geopolitical clash over energy has grown more intense and violent since Putin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. We also discuss why it's not enough to add more solar panels, wind turbines and hydro-electric power to the system. We need new and improved transmission lines to move all that power.Recommendation: Richard is watching "Extraordinary Attorney Woo", a South Korean TV series about a brilliant rookie attorney who has autism spectrum disorder. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
One of the things we really love about this series is how it highlights serious issues in South Korean society. This week it's the push by parents to have their kids be successful in school and the lack of care and understanding given to folks with autism.
Hello K-Dreamers! We are quickly approaching the end of 2022 and the end of a full year of K-Drama watching. There were some dramas that quickly became a fan favorite, like “Little Women”, and sleeper hits that we didn't expect to love so much, like “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” There were also shows we just did NOT like (side note: Is it just me, or does no one talk about the K-Dramas they dislike out loud?) For today's episode, I thought it would be fitting to talk through the Best & Worst Kdramas of 2022! Join me and my friend Anna as we chat through our personal favorites, and ones that just did not hit the mark. Hello from Seoul (both real and fictional)! This week, we welcome our friend and K-drama expert Jenny Wang Medina back to the pod to discuss the new Netflix hit “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” The legal-procedural K-drama follows an autistic attorney, Woo Young-woo, who joins the ranks of a high-powered law firm and quickly proves herself invaluable. It's wholesome, marginally sea-themed, and set in a fantasy playground of the professional sphere. We discuss the hot-button issues in Korea that form the backdrop of the show, like children's rights, Buddhism versus Christianity, North Korean defectors, and eminent domain, just to name a few. We reflect on the rise of multiculturalism and minority rights in Korean society, TV, and film, which has led to the increased visibility of people with disabilities. Woo has also sparked a specific discourse around the portrayal of its autistic protagonist. Will the show also inspire a generation of women lawyers to move to Korea, expecting a feminist haven, or convince Korean parents to ease up on their kids' time at hagwons? Only time will tell. If you plan to watch the series, we should warn you that Jay drops a couple of pretty extreme spoilers towards the end of the ep!Later this week, we'll be releasing a bonus recording of our book club with Lisa Hsiao Chen, author of “Activities of Daily Living,” for paid subscribers. Hello from the miserable gap between episodes of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”!This week, Jay and Tammy are joined by the great Jia Tolentino, a writer at The New Yorker and the author of Trick Mirror. We start by talking about Jia’s recent piece on housing (= the rent is too damn high) on the worker-owned site “Hellgate”—and her dreams of organizing her building (not Tammy’s “white projects”) in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York. Then, we discuss two provocative essays Jia wrote on abortion after the Dobbs decision: first, on surveillance statism; and second, on the moral (especially Judeo-Christian) sacrifices inherent to pregnancy and human existence, not just to abortion. Plus: Jay and Tammy review Las Vegas's Sino-Korean noodles. As always, thanks to our wonderful producer Mai and all of our subscribers (Jia included!) for keeping the show alive. On Thursday, August 25th, we’ll have our next book club meeting with Lisa Hsiao Chen, the author of the novel Activities of Daily Living. Subscribe via Patreon or Substack to join.
