Join us as we embark on an inspiring journey through the origins and growth of the Midwest Elderberry Cooperative with our guest, Chris Patton. Discover how his passion for sustainable agriculture was ignited at the Moses Conference in 2011, leading him to explore the untapped potential of American elderberry as a commercial crop. Alongside experienced farmer Paul Otten, Chris formed the cooperative to cultivate and distribute elderberries, providing support to small businesses and fostering a thriving local foods movement. Through the cooperative structure, they have laid the groundwork for a sustainable and successful future for elderberry production. Explore the challenges and triumphs of establishing American elderberry as a viable commercial crop. At the age of 62, Chris embarked on this venture with a vision to create a legacy and a team to ensure its continuity. The conversation sheds light on the legal and cooperative frameworks that support this industry and highlights the importance of market education and investment in research. With insights from key figures like Terry Durham and Mark Shepard, we uncover the unique benefits of American elderberry, and its integration into agroforestry, which offers exciting opportunities for farmers. Finally, we discuss the future of the American elderberry industry and its potential to rival the European market. Chris shares his optimism, bolstered by the support of allied organizations and ongoing research into elderberry cultivars. We emphasize the importance of local sourcing and supporting American elderberry products, while also acknowledging the resource constraints that currently limit social media presence. The conversation rounds out with a look at the unpredictable nature of niche agriculture, including stories of sunchokes and Aronia, illustrating the dynamic landscape of agricultural ventures. 00:00 - IntroductionTyler's got rib issues. Yes, of course it's from pickleball. Yes, the injury was earned during a match against an 80-year-old lady. Would we all love to hear her account of the story? Very much. This leads us into a brief sharing session about embarrassing recreational injuries. We also talk about what catches our gaze 08:50 - Getting to know Chris and TrevorAnyway… Today we welcome Chris Patton and Trevor Owen from Rogers-O'Brien Construction. Chris and Trevor give us a run-down of their construction history (some BIM coordination, some electrical work, and recently some begging and a little attempted beard construction).Trevor talks about his love of innovation and how that has driven his work at Hilty and now at Rogers-O'Brien. Then he and Chris share with us about 15:50 - Reality capture and the ROCCChris leads us into the topic we were looking forward to discussing today. He shares that several years ago he and others at R-O saw that reality capture would become increasingly important in construction. They assessed the various strategy and personnel adjustments that would need to be made in order to capitalize on this tool. The ROCC is the RO Command Center, a training approach that would ensure that up-and-coming field directors, superintendents, and other senior builders would be better prepared to be better builders across all of their projects. Eddie asks for details, and Chris discusses the idea of bringing platform data and observational data together in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of project execution. Autonomous reality capture provides much of the data that is channeled into the ROCCTrevor shares about the reality-capture logistics as well as some of the benefits that come with this approach. The ability to access data from a comfortable venue–an office, trailer, or truck–means less of the physical strain that often leads people to consider career changes or to retire early. Tyler asks about the role AI may have in this process, and Chris explains that their vision for AI is to expedite data collection and access rather than to replace human supervisors and decision-makers. 27:23 - Loom and AITyler mentions the benefits of thoughtful training. He shares about how Loom and similar tools can exploit AI in a way that makes things smoother and easier for various team members. Trevor ties this training efficiency to the labor shortage issues, discussing how increased efficiency helps maximize productivity. Eddie raises the likelihood that AI will be taking our jobs. He points out that even much of our creative work is going to be done very differently. Chris shares some counterpoints, laying out his speculations about how things will shift, including AI augmentation rather than replacement. Eddie discusses the ongoing rotation of new jobs that enable automated equipment to reliably do the jobs that people were doing yesterday. Tyler connects this to a recent visit to Walmart.Chris discusses the futuristic processes related to drone fleets. Trevor builds on this with some insights about 360 camera walks and other platform-specific data-analysis insights. 48:48 - Megaphone MessagesChris says not be scared of these changes. Don't be intimidated by them. Embrace them. For people coming out of school, he says this: There are many different routes for getting into the construction industry. It's a dynamic industry with lots of opportunity. If you like dynamic, collaborative, problem-solving environments, consider education. Trevor has these words: Be curious, be gritty, be patient. S Dream job - in my recent interveiw with Ron Johnson, he said that early in his career, he concluded that his job as a customer service rep wasn't the perfect job, but it was the perfect job for him to practice imitating Christ.   I'm very thankful for my job right now for many reasons, some are natural and some are spiritual.   I feel that God has gifted me with my job.    I'm also at an age where I think about when I'll retire, if Yeshua tarries and we don't enter fairly soon into the tribulation.  When I think about retirement, I think about how I'll spend my time but I also think about what I won't have anymore.   One thing I wont' have is the opportunity to be around and interact with dozens of different people everyday.  That is both a natural and a spritiual benefit of my job.   If you question whether you're in the right job, or career, and feel discontent at times and a lack of purpose, I challenge you to think of all the natural things to be thankful for about your job, which can certainly include but not be limited to your paycheck, but to also think about your job in spirtual terms.  What is God doing with you in your job, and here's another cool question Ron raised in our interview, and that is what is God doing with everyone else in your workplace.   That really hit me because it made me realize I am often selfish in this regard and just thinking about myself and how I'm impacted by events at my job, whether it's on a natural or a spiritual level.  The reality is that everyone I work with is a part of God's amazing plan, and I want to be more aware of that bigger picture and I am and can better fit into that larger plan.   E   For an example of faith at work, I want to hearken back to episode 3 where i interviewed Chris Patton.  He ran a car dealership and described several ways that his faith changed their mission and how they ran their dealership.  Check it out, it's a very cool interview.   L   13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow [h]we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. We’ve entered into a challenging new world, that’s clear to see. Not only for each of us individually but also as a collective. “Sustainability” is the word on everyone’s lips at the moment. But what if we already had the power to turn things around, right now, today? Welcome to the Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. If you don’t think that superheroes exist, you haven’t met Chris Patton. In this episode, I chat with one of my greatest friends, Chris Patton. Don’t worry about trying to Google search this guy, because the likelihood of you finding anything on him is pretty slim. You’re not going to find a website, you won’t come across any interviews, or even a hint of him talking about what he does – but I promise, his story is heroic and totally epic. Chris comes from the Pacific Northwest in Washington State, and up until the mid-’90s, he lived a relatively normal life. He closed sales at a car lot for a time, before switching directions to work in banking. His life was comfortable and secure. It wasn’t until he received an urgent fax from a friend living in West Africa that his world took a skidding turn. It set him on a course towards monumental life shifts involving millions of dollars, death-defying escapes, and ground-breaking scientific discoveries.  This conversation is off the charts in terms of twists and turns. We dive into Chris’s whirlwind life, from gold and diamonds, getting shot and stabbed by militia and becoming a prisoner of war, to phantom movie stardom and rooting out the answers to some of humanity's biggest questions on sustainability. This saga has it all.  For the last decade, Chris has been one of the senior science advisors for the UN on Green Technology. He’s been advising the African Union for over 15 years, as well as sitting on various international economic advisory councils. Chris has done more than most people could do in four lifetimes. The more we trust in the Lord, the more our lives change. Sometimes God allows us to see a change in direction with what we call our own business. However, the Lord reminds us that it all belongs to Him and it should be used for a platform to reach others for Him. As a Christian, walking in faith is not always easy, but Chris Patton tells us how it can certainly be pleasing to God. Chris is a steward over the business that God has entrusted to him and his family. As a Christian business mentor and leader, Chris now encourages others as well to simply lead with eternity in mind. He encourages us all to have a quiet time with God on a daily basis, listen to what God has to say and make sure that God is always our focus.   Come join us on Press & Reach

What You'll Hear: How Chris saw Adding Silhouettes as God's mission for his car business They have tried and implemented several ways to add silhouettes, including a different sales model, hiring a corporate chaplain, putting Bibles in the lobby and in the glove box of new cars It took much longer to implement the first change than he ever imagined.  He lost confidence in himself and the business actually was losing money.  He leaned heavily on the Psalms and hired a consultant "Doing Businss by the Book" by Larry Burkett showed him how to read Proverbs with business glasses He doesn't argue with those who say faith should be a private matter, but he feels scripture directs us differently We have to continually remind ourselves that our identity doesn't come from our work but from God If you have conflict with others at work, remember that they're wired differently from you If you want to share the gospel at work, focus on building intentional relationships Intro Chris Patton is President of the Mike Patton Auto Family in LaGrange, Georgia, operators of Honda, Ford, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram franchises. Along with his brother (and partner) Brian, Chris is a third-generation owner and grew up working in every department in the business, beginning at the age of 10. He assumed his current position as President/CEO in 2000.   The Mike Patton Auto Family has approximately 100 employees and retailed over 2,000 new and used vehicles in 2015. Chris also writes a blog called Christian Faith at Work.  He is writing it to business owners and leaders who are trying to figure out how to integrate their Christian faith into their businesses. By including the resources accumulated over the past nine years of learning to use the business as a vehicle for ministry, as well as real-life examples from his experiences, Chris teaches readers how to run their business from an eternal perspective. Chris and his wife Kim live in LaGrange, GA with their three children. Q&A* When Did You Become  a Christian? 10 years old.  Grew up in the church.  At my Grandmother's house. Asked her questions and I knelt at her green vinyl couch. Tell Us About Your Business and This Concept of Silhouettes I came to realize God wanted more from me than just Sundays and that He put me in business to impact people and do ministry through that business. I came across 1 Corinthians 3.  Whatever we build will be tested by fire on judgment day.  I pictured our business being scorched and tested by fire and all that was left were Silhouettes, those who had been impacted for eternity by the business.  My mission became adding silhouettes. List For Us A Few Ways You Live Out Your Faith Through Your Car Dealership We moved from a commission based pay system to a flat pay system, so they're incentivised to do what's best for the customer. We rewrote our Mission Statement and Vision Statement and made sure they were faith based. We hired a chaplain through Corporate Chaplains of America.  He comes by twice a week and leads two Bible studies. We put a New Testament copy called "Owner's Manual for Life" in the glove box with each new car sold. We have pocket copies of the Gospel of John in the waiting area. I give a devotional monthly. New hire training I teach a one hour training session on our values. We have an employee crisis fund. Talk About the Process of this Transformation This does not happen overnight.  The first transition to the new sales model took 18 months and I underestimated the rate at which people can change. My advice would be to pick one thing, make sure you think it through, involve your leadership team, and make sure it's right before taking on something else. Be patient, but once it's not working,
