In 2003, It is fair to say that rap duo Outkast were at a bit of a creative crossroads. Their 2000 album Stankonia had people rethinking what hip hop music could be - with songs such as B.O.B., Ms. Jackson, and So Fresh, So Clean winning them Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album. “Ms. Jackson”; their Billboard hot 100 hit from Stankonia was a sultry, tongue in cheek affair that gave the duo of Andre 3000 and Big Boi a rare trifecta of accolades in pop culture: Hip Hop Cred, Mainstream Pop Appeal and Hipster Acknowledgement all at once. But Andre 3000 was looking for new avenues to express himself creatively, and moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles to begin his acting career. When acting didn't work out, Andre 3000 envisioned a new kind of project- a solo project, one influenced by, but also completely different than the Outkast records before it - a pop record, a jazz record, a funk record all in one; A record and a concept that would come to be known as “The Love Below” Originally written as Andre 3000 and his guitar, and inspired more by bands like The Ramones, The Hives and The Smiths than by what was going on in hip hop; Hey Ya! Was part of the grander cinematic vision of The Love Below and the complexities and frustration with modern relationship dynamics. Or, as Andre 3000 would day in the song: "Don't want to meet your daddy, just want you in my Caddy." This is the true story of Outkast's Smash Hit 'Hey Ya' with newly unearthed audio from Andre 3000 in 2003.

Quavo and Takeoff have unleashed Only Built for Infinity Links, their first full-length record under the Unc & Phew moniker. The ATL rappers/family members began working on the project about two years ago, as they prepared to deliver the Migos' Culture III album. Quavo and Takeoff spoke about the effort in a new interview with Complex's Jordan Rose, explaining their overall vision and hopes for the release. “We just want [listeners] to know that we're consistent individually, as a duo, and as a group,” Quavo said about OBFIL. “People always ask for the [Migos] altogether. A lot of people love that, but at the same time, even when we would go off and do our own features and other things, it's always successful. We're just learning from each of our lives. Like I said, it was always just about the three of us and living fast and going crazy, now it's just about giving them the origins and legacy and what we have done.. People can get lost sometimes, so we have to let them know that we started this and [that] we're still here.” Quavo, 31, and Takeoff, 28, said they drew inspiration from some of hip-hop's most iconic duos: the OBFIL album art was a nod to OutKast's Stankonia cover, while the title was a reference to Ghostface Killah and Raekwon's 1995 project Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. source: Quavo and Takeoff Drop Unc & Phew Album ‘Only Built for Infinity Links' | Complex --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

Baltimore based Brian Ennals and Infinity Knives are the duo behind the powerfully cathartic "King Cobra". In this week's episode, the guys have made a change to season two. Despite originally selecting Stankonia, the decision has been made to include Aquemini as Outkast's best album. We encourage you to check out our independent record store of the week, Atlanta's Beatlab. As always, we appreciate our sponsor, Anchor.fm, for their support.
this Rolling Stone list is what we deserve, not as listeners, but as consumers of content. We've engaged too much and for too long, with pages like rap TV and Wild hip hop DX headlines, XXL posts designed to provoke our ire and our eyes in equal parts. We've created an environment where there's no incentive for Rolling Stone to publish a list that we're all going to agree with. And let's face it, the vast majority of us should agree with the greatest hip hop albums of all time list from an outlet who claims to be a bastion of respectability and intelligent critique, an album that rises through the ranks of mid and good to greatness will naturally be heaped with adoration from listeners. Rolling Stone wanted to provoke us with outrage, but how best to do that? They could stack the top 20 with Lil pump and 6ix9ine albums, but that would be too easily dismissed. They could leave prominent albums like Illmatic for the Bottom 100 but then the trolling would be so obvious people would merely disengage, so they sprinkled enough breadcrumbs to keep us interested, and then they unloaded the dogshit on us. Miseducation at number 10 - slightly concerning. Stankonia number two. Well, at least it went to Outkast. Illmatic at 24. I mean, at least it isn't outside the top 50. Very sneaky, and wholly useless as a list of rappers, but hugely informative as an insight into what content consumers are thinking and feeling right now.Check out the replies and reactions on Beams.fm

What better for the week after Halloween than an album released on October 31st, 2000? We are cruising in the ATL and talking about Stankonia on this podcast. We are talking about being so fresh and so clean and Ms. Jackson while also delving into our Gasoline Dreams. Folks, this album is good! We are the best Outkast podcast! Before we start talking to Cookie, we go over underwear for men, where to sit for a concert, service fees, and the wonderful world of mini doughnuts. We also talk Aaron driving monster trucks and wearing orthotic shoes. Russ also drops knowledge on us about another instrument and Russell falls behind in the count with the pitcher. Join Jesse and special guest Holly Boson (@fireh9lly) for our Halloween mega-special, where we examine the scariest thing anyone could imagine in the year 2000: a 28-year-old white guy with a bad case of sassmouth! Is Eminem, despite still being one of the most popular musicians in the world, still essentially a Dustbin artist? Should The Marshall Mathers LP actually have been an LP? If you want to hear a rich white guy with a massive platform complaining about being cancelled, is this still technically the best possible way you can do that? Is Eminem, in his heart of hearts, a "fun dad Resistance lib"? Join us as we come to no particularly conclusive answers to any of this over a long, long period of time. Content Warning: This is the clean version of the podcast — if Eminem has taught me anything, it's that that's the one you give away for free — so all cuss words have been replaced by audio elements from the Hanna-Barbara sound library, a bit I bitterly regretted committing to approximately two hours into the editing process. (Anyone who wants the uncensored version is welcome to venmo me $16.99 for a burned CD. Great for parties!) However, this is still The Marshall Mathers LP, so there will of course be discussions of violence, sexual assault, emotional abuse, clown rap, homophobia, and miscellaneous other unpleasantries. Critical/Commercial Stats: Then: • 2000 Album of the Year in LA Times, Rolling Stone, Face, Melody Maker, and Muzik • #3 in Spin, # 4 in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll, #5 in Uncut, #7 in NME, #8 in Select, #13 in Mojo • Grammy Nomination for Album of the Year, loses to Steely Dan's Two Against Nature. Wins Grammy for Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Solo Performance for "The Real Slim Shady" • #1 for eight weeks, ultimately sells 21 million copies worldwide Now: • Acclaimed Music has TMMLP at #3 for 2000 (Top 5: Kid A, Stankonia, TMMLP, Stories From The City, Since I Left You), #15 for the decade, and #192 all-time. • It also has "Stan" as the #5 song of 2000, “The Real Slim Shady” at #12, “The Way I Am” at #34, and non-single “Kim” at #57. • Eminem himself is the 104th ranked artist: rappers ahead of him are Outkast (#64), Public Enemy (#42), Jay-Z (#36), Kendrick Lamar (#32), and Kanye West (#13). • The biggest selling album act of the 00s, with sales of over 32 million. At the turn of the century, with music becoming formulaic with the boy bands and rap/rock groups, Atlanta's own hip-hop duo, OutKast, released the psychedelic, experimental classic album known as ”Stankonia”, and on Halloween day nonetheless! So in this special edition Halloween episode, Fearless and Wayne give their thoughts on its 20th anniversary. Does the album hold up, how does it fit into the “cancelled era”, was it too experimental, is your favorite song still your favorite song and most importantly, was this album only good in its era, or is it a classic for all times to come? Either way, 20 years ago today, the South proved that they had something to say.

We are now the best Steely Dan podcast! And the best podcast about Aja! What if a band is really just two guys and a cast of rotating players? What if the two dudes were perfectionists and what if they didn't stop until they got exactly the sound they wanted? It is no surprise that the music on Aja sounds like it is made by AI yet at the same time is funky, deep, and new on every listen. It is a lot like this podcast but if we were talented or put time into it! We dive into a deep mailbag segment and Magic Mike 69 blows our minds a few times. Aaron boos people (rude), Rob boos people with scary music (funny and cool), and we have a candyman moment. We're back and we're going back, way back. Back to the new millennium where hip-hop was thriving, the DIY backpack era started to fizzle, but the major labels swooped in and were plucking groups one by one. Collabos were in full effect and more noticeably than in years past, very cross-coast friendly. The independent game was coming off a stellar '99 with the release of Operation: Doomsday, but powerhouse labels like Interscope, Def Jam and MCA started to infiltrate and influence while changing landscape of hip-hop. Outkast released Stankonia. Eminem dropped he Marshall Mathers LP and the Wu came with the underwhelming The W. Each week we were force-fed videos by Black Eye Peas, Wyclef Jean, Jay-Z and Mystikal. 2000 was a pivotal time in music. The Rawkus dominance was slowly winding down and many of our favorite rappers starting yearning more and more for that commercial success, indirectly alienating their fan bases. Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre controlled much of the market and Dre's 2001 album, which released in 1999, made everyone rethink their production. No longer were the days of lo-fi beats or low-budget anything. Production had to be sonically rich, with heavy bass lines, strings, powerful synths and sporting soulful vocals. In this episode, we will talk with Dr. Regina N. Bradley, academic scholar and co-host of Bottom of the Map podcast about her newest book Chronicling Stankonia: The Rise of the Hip-Hop South and her thoughts of how much hip-hop music has grown in the past 3 decades.
We're back to sing the praises of Outkast. After the smooth perfection of Aquemini, Andre and Big Boi dropped the at once massively accessible and obtusely futuristic Stankonia. You know “Ms. Jackson,” “B.O.B.,” and “So Fresh, So Clean,” all of which her major hits in 2000 (and far beyond). You know who else was huge in 2000? Ludacris and Nelly. Like, absurdly so. Matt talks those three artists and what their 2000 releases say about the present and future of hip-hop, then Tim decides which one is truly the Hot Shit.
Back at it again, with another guest! Sam & Lady Q have returned and brought along fellow creative, DJ, and musician Smokey Ventage! They'll discuss how Smokey got his start, upcoming projects, and the untimely death of beloved actor Michael K. Williams. Although we didn't go back to it during the episode, we wanted to include Smokey's GuestQuest answer. For those wondering, Smokey's other 2 Desert Island Albums include Stankonia by Outkast and Unpredictable by Jamie Foxx. Dear Outkast, I wrote you but you still ain't callin'... ...wait no...wrong letter...hold on... Dear Outkast, Can you at least think about a reunion? Maybe on the link podcast with Mike Szego? Love, Mike Szego, from the link podcast with Mike Szego ...Worth a try. On most of my episodes so far, I've been either interviewing cool people that I find interesting, or reviewing mostly new stuff that has come out. This time, I wanted to give you all a little more lore to my own life, the stuff I grew up on, and for this time around, the key beats in the soundtrack to my existence. I love Outkast very much. One of my favorite artists of all-time, and had the most underrated and extremely original, amazing, and sonically explosive four-album runs that any group could ever hope for: Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik (1994) ATLiens (1996) Aquemini (1998) Stankonia (2000) What a run. Let me geek out and tell you all about it. I swear, if you're a fan, it will be a fun stroll down memory lane, and if you're not, I think I can turn you. At the very least, you'll know I love it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Chronicling Stankonia: The Rise of the Hip-Hop South (University of North Carolina Press, 2021) pulses with the beats of a new American South, probing the ways music, literature, and film have remixed southern identities for a post–civil rights generation. For scholar and critic Dr. Regina N. Bradley, OutKast's work is the touchstone, a blend of funk, gospel, and hip-hop developed in conjunction with the work of other culture creators—including T.I., Kiese Laymon, and Jesmyn Ward. This work, Bradley argues, helps define new cultural possibilities for Black southerners who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s and have used hip-hop culture to buffer themselves from the historical narratives and expectations of the civil rights era. André 3000, Big Boi, and a wider community of creators emerge as founding theoreticians of the hip-hop South, framing a larger question of how the region fits into not only hip-hop culture but also contemporary American society as a whole. Chronicling Stankonia reflects the ways that culture, race, and southernness intersect in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Although part of southern hip-hop culture remains attached to the past, Bradley demonstrates how younger southerners use the music to embrace the possibility of multiple Souths, multiple narratives, and multiple points of entry to contemporary southern Black identity. Dr. Regina N. Bradley is an alumna Nasir Jones HipHop Fellow at Harvard University and an Assistant Professor of English and African Diaspora Studies at Kennesaw State University Check out Bradley's podcast about Southern hip-hop, Bottom of the Map. Bradley also has another OutKast book coming in August 2021, An OutKast Reader: Essays on Race, Gender, and the Postmodern South (UGA Press).
