Uisce Éireann is facing calls to ensure an emergency water supply is in place in Miltown Malbay to prevent disruptions to visitors and businesses over Willie Clancy week. It's after a burst main on the Old Doolough supply on Sunday led to widespread outages for traders, locals and tourists in the catchment area. It's understood Uisce Éireann is planning to replace a 4.5km stretch of the 50 year-old asbestos pipe on the network in the near future and that the utility will hold an emergency meeting with West Clare Councillors this week. Mullagh Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon insists repair crews and water tankers must be on standby for the week ahead.

In this episode we tell the story of not one, but two, Irish families that came out of the area surrounding the town of Bantry in West Cork, Ireland. The first story shares the story of Francis O'Neill who emigrated to the USA and Chicago - eventually becoming a chief of police. More importantly, he became an avid collector and preserver of traditional Irish music. The healthy state of Irish traditional music today owes a lot to the efforts of this one man.We then follow the Keohane family who left the area in the early 1800s. On arrival in the USA, their name changed to "Cohan" and their grandson is the broadway composer we know today as "George M. Cohan".We also have lots of wonderful Irish songs and music to help us along the way - so do enjoy!Music featured in this episode:"Chief O'Neill's Favourite Hornpipe" performed by Willie Clancy."City of Chicago" performed by Christy Moore."Yankee Doodle Dandy" performed by Jimmy Cagney and Bob Hope.Support the Letter from Ireland Show:Thank you for listening to the Letter from Ireland show. Joanne and I go way back, having come up through the life universities of The Willie Clancy summer school and the Fleadh Cheoil competitions in Ireland. We've had great fun over the years knocking head over our differing opinions on the virtue of playing polkas on a banjo. I'm not a fan, but Joanne finally explains to me how to do it properly!! We take a fond trip down memory lane in this interview, Joanne reminiscing about simpler times playing music as a child growing up in Co Limerick, the "craic" of the fleadhs, the mummers and the wren boys. Joanne is a terrific story teller and even better musician and a truly kind hearted soul.

An online documentary series is to showcase how the cancellation of the Willie Clancy Summer School has impacted the young people of Miltown Malbay and its environs. The series is to launch on Miltown Malbay Community Centre's Facebook page on Saturday, on what would have been the first day of the festival. Centre manager Neil Hynes and one of the series participants, Sean Neylon, joined Gavin on Friday's show.
Mar a chuala muid le cúpla seachtain anuas ní bheidh na féilte móra ceoil sin ag tarlú i mbliana. Sa bhliain 2010 thosaigh Neansaí Ní Choisdealbha an tigh seo ag taifead ag féilte Willie Clancy agus an Fleadh Ceol.
While on air on Wednesday's edition of Morning Focus, we learned that the Wilile Clancy Summer School of 2020 has been cancelled, owing to COVID-19 concerns. It's the first cancellation in the event's near 50 year history. Administrator Harry Hughes joined us on the line to explain their decision.
We are back! We missed the last one, thanks to the 8-day trad rave that is the Willie Clancy festival. A wonderful gathering of traditional music, but once the last weekend hits - let's just say this - send a drone over the town during that last weekend and you'd come back with footage that looked like gameplay straight outta Grand Theft Auto. So, here we are - normal lack of service resumes. We're brimming with new and old bits. Moving through stuff from Woven Skull, Jim O'Rourke, Welfare and Binga, Etch, Oil Gang, Hessle Audio and more. Bish bosh bang. Throw in some jungle, ravey piano, the Speaker of the House Of Commons losing his absolute nut and there ya go!
Willie Clancy ag casadh ceoil ar an phíb uilleann do Bhreandán Ó Cíobháin Mí na Samhna 1972 agus cúpla focal ó Willie fá thábhacht na Gaeilge ó thaobh an cheoil agus na foinn mhalla "I'd give it all to have the language" deir sé.
Here's a jig from the South West - mar atá Co. Clare. I associate it with Willie Clancy. I'm not sure whether its title refers to the direction the air flowed through his pipes while he played it. I think my flute was more Mecca-wards when I was playing it on this occasion - that would just be a west wind - with slight precipitation towards the end of the tune. For disciples of the dot there's always http://tunepal.org/tunepal/show_tune.php?tunepalid=8445-75.abc-1-Southwest~Wind%2C~The.
Here's a reel which I was asked to play. I'm not writing a disclaimer with the "Iwas asked to play" bit. It's just that I'm so glad to have been asked that I can't help but mention the asking in the posting. I used to think this was a new fangled sort of a tune but the likes of Willie Clancy played it and Francis O'Neill has it in his collection from 1907 (I missed the centenary balloons anuraidh). Here's my Friday evening go at it anyway. (The name makes me think of taking leaves intravenously. I've (y) more chance of taking leave of my ....).
Here's a reel celebrating the colour (color) of the grass in the USA. Willie Clancy was one person who played this tune.
Here's a piping jig usually associated with Willie Clancy. (It may well not usually be associated with him at all but I couldn't think of anything else to write. Willie Clancy did play it, though).
Here's a piping jig which Willie Clancy and then the Bothy Band made popular. I'll not write anything about its name.
Here's a good reel, or at least it was until I blew it down a hole in a piece of blackwood. It used to get a dryer journey courtesy of Wille Clancy and prior to that, Garrett Barry who was a piper from the generation before Willie Clancy's. I've been raiding the track listings of a few Willie Clancy records lately. Stealing tunes from piping records is usually a good way of getting flute tunes owning to pipers' reluctance to pick tunes in funny keys. They've enough to be getting on with keeping all their plumbing in some sort of order.
Here's a piping reel (Willie Clancy again) which is possibly a version of "Colonel Frazer". There's another tune called "The Braes of Busby" which sounds like a version of it too. I'll record the other 2 tunes with reasonably long intervals between them so you don't hear them all together and find out that they really are just the same tune with different names and that I'm running out of things to play. If that happens I'll have to start singing but I only know one song - a Patsy Clyne number as it happens but copyright restrictions might have me scuppered.
Here's a great reel which I'd probably associate most with Willie Clancy. It's on one of the "Pipering of Willie Clancy" records which Claddagh Records published some years ago. Between picking cockles, welcoming Charlie, tying bonnets, Danging weavers, getting clinkings coming home from the races and all the other activities she's recorded in tune names as having been involved in, its a wonder she had time to blink (I don't remember there being a tune called "Jenny's Blink", so maybe she hadn't). Anyway, I hope this tune is of use to someone who is a tad less busy and without a Jenny-esque social calendar.
This is an entirely rhetorical question at this stage. Willie Clancy probably would have known more about it. It's a good tune in any case, I hope.
Here's a popular piping reel which suits the flute. It's often associated with Willie Clancy.
