Clare County Council is being accused of abandoning a vital piece of water infrastructure in West Clare. The "model" is a structure in Clohaninchy south of Quilty that funnels water from the Annagheeragh River to the sea. After previously raising issues relating to the model in March of 2024, Quilty native Joseph Woulfe has once again taken to social media where he's claimed the structure isn't fit for purpose. He's calling for a second pipe to be constructed in order to aid drainage.

It's hoped legacy water disruptions in a bustling West Clare town will finally be coming to an end this Summer. Uisce Eireann has confirmed it will be replacing 6km of defective 50-year-old mains on the Coore water scheme which also serves the surrounding areas of Mullagh, Quilty, Spanish Point and Annagh. The works will commence in March and are expected to be complete by mid June. Quilty Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon says it's crucial for the region's tourism product.

As you have been hearing in our news bulletins throughout the morning, motorists in Clare are being warned of "treacherous" driving conditions this morning following heavy snowfall overnight. Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary remain under a Status Orange snow and ice warning until midday today, meaning very difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility, travel disruption, disruption and delays to public transport, difficult conditions underfoot, and animal welfare issues are all possibilities. Gardaí say roads in West Clare are particularly bad, especially the N68 from Daragh to Kilrush, and are advising motorists to avoid travel if possible and for those who must head out on the roads to slow down, drive with extra care, and allow plenty of extra time for journeys. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined on the line by Senior Engineer at the Roads, Environment, and Water Services Department at Clare County Council, Cyril Feeney. Quilty 21/11/2024. Councils and waste industry experts are calling for increased regulations for the disposal of used batteries following an escalation in fires. WasteMINZ, the Waste & Recycling Industry Forum, Auckland Council and Christchurch City Council have come together to request direct action to prevent batteries from being thrown out or included in kerbside recycling. WasteMINZ chief executive Nic Quilty says the organisation's website has a map of safe locations where people can dispose of their batteries and battery-powered products. "Most of the facilities are free of charge, some of them cost a little bit of money - but not much - and that's the best thing to do." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seven years after the publication of Vladimir Nabokov's scandalous novel Lolita Stanley Kubrick brought it to the big screen, having adapted the author's screenplay sufficiently, assembled a fine cast and applied the directorial flourishes that would come to mark his films out as unique. As Humbert Humbert Kubrick cast James Mason, who portrayed the predatory intellectual with just the right amount of creepiness, while allowing his character enough vulnerability and weakness that audiences, while not rooting for him by any means, weren't wholly repulsed. His antagonist, and the shadow that hangs over the entire film, is Clare Quilty, played with aplomb by Peter Sellers in his first collaboration with Kubrick. Although his actual screen-time is limited, Quilty is a ubiquitous presence, a quietly menacing threat to Humbert's happiness and ultimately the agent of his downfall. Most people know the story and it wasn't for nothing that the tagline for the film was 'How did they make a movie of Lolita?' Through masterful direction, insinuation and nuance Kubrick managed to do it, and did it well, and while we can feel disgust towards some of its themes there's no denying that it's a powerful film. Joining Tyler to talk about it is actor Patrick Strain, who puts up a spirited argument that it is one of Kubrick's best.

It's claimed the people of Miltown have been "sold a disaster" due to persistent water outages affecting homes and businesses in the region. It's after a burst main led to supply disruptions in the Coore, Quilty, Mullagh,Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point and Cooraclare areas for the second time in the space of a month. The West Clare Municipal District has since requested a meeting with Senior Management in Uisce Eireann and Clare's Oireachtas members with a view to securing capital funding to upgrade the 50-year-old pipeline serving the network. Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Talty says the situation is completely unacceptable.

A Kilmurry-Ibrickane councillor claims the tourism industry in West Clare needs investment 'like any other industry'. At this week's meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, there were calls made to provide greater support to the prevention of litter in the towns of Quilty and Mullagh, as well as at Seafield Pier and the local beaches At present, the Council has four full-time operatives and four part time operatives working to keep the towns and beaches in pristine condition, with the hope that this will be increased from next year on. Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon, believes keeping the area clean will result in an increase in tourist footfall in the area.
An urgent meeting between Clare County Council and Uisce Éireann is being sought to ensure the county's tourism-dependent regions can enjoy adequate water supply going forward. Following supply interruptions in West Clare due to a burst main on the Old Doolough supply on Sunday, Uisce Éireann has confirmed supply has been returned to customers in Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point, Quilty, Mullagh, Coore, Creegh, Cooraclare, Cahermurphy and surrounding area. With fears having been expressed that outages could be experienced during the upcoming Willie Clancy Week, the water utility has claimed there are no planned outages in the area from July 6th to 14th. Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District and Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney says she believes engagement is needed with Uisce Éireann to ensure they appreciate the importance of reliable water supply in West Clare.

Joseph chats with Prof. Jake Quilty-Dunn, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy and the Center for Cognitive Science Rutgers University. Prof. Quilty-Dunn works primarily in philosophy of mind and cognitive science. Much of his research concerns distinctions between kinds of mental representations (such as iconic and discursive formats), mental processes (such as inference and association), and mental systems (such as perception and cognition). He also has broad research interests in philosophy of language, aesthetics and early modern philosophy. In this episode Joseph and Dr. Quilty-Dunn chat about the language of thought (LoT) hypothesis. They discuss the history of the idea, how the LoT differs from natural language, how it shows up in perception and cognition, how it compares to rival formats, and the extent to which it is learnable in development. Clare's newly-appointed Seasonal Dog Warden says she'll strive to make the county's beaches safe spaces for all this summer. The local authority has bolstered its beach patrols for the summer bathing season in order to combat issues such as dog fouling and dog attacks. Clare FM's Seán Lyons reports. ===== With the summer bathing season now well underway, Clare County Council has vowed to take a dogged approach to beach safety. From May 15th up to September 15th, a host of beaches across the county are monitored for dog control. The monitored areas are Ballyalla Lake, Ballycuggeran, Killaloe, Bishopsquarter, Brew's Bridge, Cappagh, Carrigaholt, Doolin, Fanore, Kilkee, Lahinch, Mountshannon, Querrin Pier, Quilty, Seafield, Spanish Point, Trá Leathan, White Strand Doonbeg and White Strand Miltown Malbay. To facillitate these patrols, Annette Kenny has been appointed as Seasonal Dog Warden for the county. She says her role isn't to prevent people from enjoying the summer months with their canine companions but to ensure everyone feels safe and secure when visiting the county's waterways. [CLIP] Beach bye-laws restrict dogs from being on beaches from 11am to 6pm throughout the bathing season. Long-serving Clare County Dog Warden Frankie Coote insists this is necessary as violent incidents have taken place in the past. He says stern consequences will face those who fail to rein in their pets.
BEN QUILTY IS GOING TO DIEAustralian artist Ben Quilty has always been an outspoken human - passionate about art, social justice, and the general messy business of Being Human. But as someone who has had a front-row seat to death and mortality - not just through his work, but also through his activism - how does he feel about planning his own Funeral? What does he wish he'd said and refrained from saying? This is an earnest Dream Funeral from one of the country's most reflective and creative minds.Ben Quilty is a contemporary Australian artist whose thickly painted landscapes and portraits have garnered international acclaim. Working in a style that remains both highly expressive and naturalistic, Quilty aims to delve into the emotional qualities of places and people through his gestural application of paint. Though remains distinctive in Quilty's vivid use of spectral color. Quilty studied at Sydney College of the Arts and the University of Western Sydney. In 2011, he notably worked as an official war artist for the Australian Defense force stationed in Afghanistan, where he depicted the daily life and struggles of the soldiers through quickly executed sketches and paintings. There are calls for more new social housing schemes to be spread throughout West Clare as a matter of urgency. It comes as over 400 households in the region are awaiting an offer of social housing from the local authority. There are currently plans to construct 17 social honmes in Kilrush by 2025, with a further 61 units due to come on stream between Kilkee, Doonbeg and Kilrush during 2026. Quilty based Fianna Fáil local election candidate Michael Shannon believes these developments are not being spread wide enough.
Clare lost out to Kerry in their opening game of the Phase Two series of the Munster U20 football championship. An early goal for the Kingdom set the tone for a 1-13 to 0-5 victory. Clare played with the elements in the opening half with the sides heading for the dressing rooms level, but the Banner failed to register any score in the second period. Manager Michael Neylon says while it was a disappointing performance, they have to move on quickly
The Government has been accused of disregarding Clare's rural population with the latest excise duty hike. Since April 1st, the price of a litre of petrol and diesel has increased by 4 cent and 3 cent respectively. This means 60% of the cost of filling a car is now based on taxes alone, despite the state collecting €3.8bn from the taxpayer on fuel just last year. Quilty native and Independent local election candidate for West Clare Joseph Woulfe believes the state should invest in environmental solutions rather than driving up the cost of living.
The third round of this year's Zimmer Biomet Run the Banner series takes place on Sunday afternoon in Quilty. The 8k route will be hosted by the Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare Athletics Club. Clare FM's Derrick Lynch met up with club stalwarts James Sexton, Sue Garrahy and Tom Mackey to chat about the club and their involvement in it.

Fresh anger has been expressed over what's been described as a "third-world water supply" in parts of West and North Clare. It comes amid reports of discolouration and foul odour in the water supply in Quilty, and part of West Clare today and yesterday. Quilty native and Clare Beef Plan Chair, Joseph Woulfe has been telling me he believes water-related issues are happening too often here and those responsible must be held to account.

An Ennis Irish language activist says he doesn't believe that half the population of Clare can speak Irish. A Central Statistics Office report has listed Clare as second only to Galway County in terms of the amount of Irish speakers as a percentage of overall population. Clare's relationship with the Irish language has come under the spotlight following the finding that this county has the second-highest proportion of Irish speakers nationwide. The CSO's 'Irish Language and Education' report has revealed that based on last year's Census data, 54,437 Clare people can speak some level of Irish, which equates to over 47% of the population. Lissycasey has the highest proportion of Irish speakers of any area in Clare, at 59%, followed by Kilmurry, Cratloe, Crusheen and Ardnacrusha. By contrast, just 32% of the population of Whitegate speak the language, while Quilty, Kilrush, Kilkee and Shannon also have a notably low proportion of Gaeilgeoirs. Despite the fact that 40% of people nationwide claimed to have Irish, 473,000 of these admit to never speaking it in their daily lives. Ennis-based Irish language activist Macdara Ó Conaola believes that in spite of the figures, many people view the Irish language as a novelty.
A former Clare U-21 manager believes Killimer are capable of taking down the Kerry champions this weekend. The West Clare men will take on Listowel Emmets in the Munster Junior Club Semi-Final at Páirc Naomh Mhuire in Quilty on Saturday afteroon. Killimer will be hoping to become the third representatives from this county in the provincial showpiece at this level following Eire Óg in 2001 and Coolmeen in 2015. Clare FM Football Analyst Joe Garry believes they have the willpower required.
