It's claimed the people of south-east Clare feel as if they're in "no man's land" due to the allegedly poor provision of services in the region. Clare County Council operated a service office in the village of Westbury up until 2016 but it was closed after an examination found only 400 people visited the office for non-motor tax queries in the space of a year. At the time, the local authority it was taking the decision because "access to online facilities is now much greater than when online access facilities were initiated at the office". Clonlara resident and Fine Gael local election candidate Val Gillane believes the office should resume services as people in the area don't feel represented by Clare County Council.
The funeral mass of a seven-year-old boy from South-East Clare who tragically passed away after getting into difficulty in a hotel swimming pool, will take place today. The seven-year-old was pronounced dead at University Hospital Limerick following the incident at the Lakeside Hotel in Kilalloe on Saturday afternoon. Shay was a 1st class pupil at Scoil Seanain Naofa in Clonlara, which had celebrated confirmations earlier that day. Clonlara Independent Councillor Michael Begley says it's hard to comprehend that something like this could happen to a young child enjoying himself on a happy day.
It's been revealed that seven Clare artists have generously donated their art for Incognito, Ireland's biggest online art sale, in aid of the Jack and Jill Children's Foundation. Among the local artists who have taken up their brushes for a great cause are Samuel Walsh from Clonlara and Richard Andreucetti from Kildysart. To find out more about this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Clodagh Hogan, Head of Communications at Jack and Jill Children's Foundation, and Samuel Walsh, Incognito artist from Clonlara.
Fears for health and safety have been expressed over outdated bye-laws at Clare burial sites. Communities across the county continue to deal with capacity issues at local graveyards, including in Crusheen, Clonlara and Ennis. Currently, Irish burials are regulated by legislation that was introduced in 1888. Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard says bereaved families should not be faced with complications in trying times.

A south-east Clare councillor who's called for trees overlooking a local social housing estate to be reduced in height says he doesn't anticipate any environmental backlash to the proposal. Clonlara's Glór na Srutha social housing estate, which came on stream in 2015, is situated beside a cluster of tall evergreen trees which were planted to shield the former wastewater treatment plant on the site. Shannon Municipal District has conceded that the trees are "no longer required" as the plant is gone and "assessment will be arranged with maintenance works based on the outcome". Independent Clonlara Councillor Michael Begley believe it's necessary to reduce the trees' height due to their "uncontrollable" nature which is negatively impacting residents' lives.

Residents and business owners near Clare's coasts and waterways may be forced to abandon their properties in the coming years due to major flooding. It follows the publication of a new government report this week which claims that Ireland's sea level is on track to rise by at least 1m by 2100 due to the pace of global warming. The National Coastal Change Management Strategy has identified a number of settlements in this county as high risk including areas of Miltown Malbay, Ballyvaughan, Lahinch, Kilkee, Newmarket, Clonlara and Ennis. The report has reccommended major investment in existing flood defences, however it has warned that in some instances, a co-ordinated retreat away from the coastline may be neccessary. Manager of the Monk's Restaurant in Ballyvaughan, Patrick O'Donoghue says its vital action is taken now to prevent future devastation. Meanwhile Lahinch Green Party Councillor Liam Grant believes its vital that the €3m climate fund announced in Budget 2024 is used to provide infrastructure in vulnerable communities.

What began as a microschool in 1967 for Clonlara School founder Pat Montgomery's two children and six others has grown into an internationally-renowned, K-12 private school serving 2,000 off-campus students around the world through its online program, as well as a small group of on-campus students at its Ann Arbor, Michigan headquarters. It quickly became clear that parents outside of Ann Arbor were attracted to this learning model, particularly as the modern homeschooling movement gained traction beginning in the 1970s. Some Michigan families were investigated or charged with truancy for homeschooling their children, so Montgomery mounted a lawsuit against the Michigan State Board of Education. Thirty years ago this month, on May 25, 1993, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled in Clonlara's favor. That case, and two related ones that were decided on the same day, secured homeschooling rights in the state. Today, I am so honored to be joined by Pat Montgomery and her daughter, Chandra Montgomery Nicol, who was Clonlara's first student, served as its longtime Executive Director, and is now Clonlara's board chair. Read more about Montgomery and the May 1993 legal decisions in my latest Forbes article. Sign up for my free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at fee.org/liberated.
