It's hoped the current 27 week average waiting time for a driving test in Clare will soon be significantly slashed. The Road Safety Authority has published a national action plan to reduce waiting lists that will see driving tests conducted in evenings, on weekends and even bank holidays. New centres will also be opened in Dublin, Kildare and Louth to ease the backlog, with the RSA setting the goal that no motorist will wait longer than 10 weeks for a test after September this year. Chris Curran from the Chris Curran Driving School in Ennis believes it could work.
People are using third-party apps to skip the queue for a driving test. Internet bots are being used to go through the RSA website and secure cancellation slots to sell to people waiting months. In Ennis the average waiting time for a test is 5 months and 3 weeks. In Kilrush it's 4 months and 3 weeks and in Shannon it's 5 months, two weeks. Brenda Bolger, from Bolger School of Motoring, says it's understandable some people are turning to this option... Tomorrow will see significant changes to the speed limits on Irish roads come into effect. The changes, aimed at improving road safety, will see the speed limit on local roads reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h from tomorrow, Friday 7th of February. Further planned changes, due to come into effect at a later date, will see the speed limit on national secondary roads reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h; while the speed limit in built-up areas, such as urban cores, town centres, and housing estates will be reduced from 50km/h to 30km/h. However, as we heard from Ennis driving instructor Chris Curran on Wednesday's Morning Focus, there are those who have concerns over the new speed limit regulations. Another person who has expressed doubts over the changes is Aontú Local Area Representative for Ennis, Séamus Enright, who has described the reduction of the speed limits as another prime example of the government engaging in ‘nannystateism'. Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady spoke with Aontú Local Area Representative for Ennis, Séamus Enright. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Fianna Fáil Shannon LEA Councillor, Rachel Hartigan. Image (c) by georgeclerk from Getty Images Signature via Canva

On Monday's show, we spoke about the Road Safety Authority's decision to increase the price of a driving licence, the learner permit, and the NCT. The price of a driver licence and learner permit are set to increase by 10 euro, rising to 65 and 45 euro. Meanwhile, the cost of an NCT will increase by 5 euro, to 60 euro, while a re-test will rise by 12 euro, to 40 euro. These increases will take effect from the 1st of January. If you remove the trust, then they wont be listening anymore. So just be honest. I had Chris Curran of the Podcast Engineering School join me today. We talked all about his love of audio production, what makes a good podcast, and how to create really good audio. Does sound quality really matter in podcasting? Well, if you ask most listeners and today's guest, a trained and experienced audio engineer who has worked with some of the biggest names in music, the answer is a resounding YES. Chris Curran runs the Podcast Engineering School, where he emphasizes the importance of quality in all areas of podcasting, including sound. Chris also hosts his own podcast, the Podcast Engineering Show, and works as a podcast engineer for companies who are looking to making podcasting a part of their marketing strategy. On this episode, we dig into his experience in these areas and discuss how podcast content has become the central hub of content creation for many of the companies that he has worked with - and why virtually every company he has worked with has been thrilled with the impact that podcasting has had on their marketing. We also get into some questions from listeners, discussing considerations for setting up a recording space when recording with more that one person in a room, the drawbacks of recording two people on one microphone, and freedom in designing a format for your new podcast. Last week, I blocked my calendar and was hoping for a summer getaway with my wife and dog. Well, Rona made that less appealing, and my wife ended up having some work commitments anyway. So I decided to turn the week into a "staycation." Yes, I made Costco runs and other miscellaneous house stuff, but I really set out to spend some time looking "under the hood" of podcasting and honing my craft. I did two things. I watched a bunch of videos from this month's Podfest Global Summit - turns out buying the ticket to have all the recordings on demand was money well spent. I also joined the Podcast Editor Academy - the new venture from the Podcast Editors Club Facebook community I'm in. There's a wealth of current and archived knowledge there. And I also took a class on the high-end editing software I use, Izotope RX 7, from YaYa Podcasting. Huge thanks to people like Steve Stewart, Chris Curran, Mark Deal, Chris Krimitsos, and Carrie Caufield Arick.Side note for audio geeks - I bought several "Plugins" for Adobe Audition to adds some processing and bells and whistles to audio - Audio Engineer Chris Curran's Top 10 list of audio plugins is a great read.Podcast host Buzzsprout has a great article on how to use music in podcasts. I was thrilled to talk with Carrie Caufield Arick, one of the first podcast editors and coaches I met in the space. You name it, she does it - editing, coaching, consulting, workshops, helping run a Facebook group for female podcast editors, and more.Carrie told me how she got into the space, first as a podcast listener, and then a creator and coach. We compared notes about getting started and growing our businesses. We got into editing philosophy - both in terms of content and a little technical geekery. Her advice: "PUSH ALL THE BUTTONS."This led us into a discussion of how men and women hear - and process - audio differently. And we don't just mean on the technical side. It also comes down to nuances in language - what we say and what we hear. And for women, it's sometimes a fine line between being aggressive and being considered a....well, you know what. These ideas led Carrie and some others to create the Just Busters Facebook Group - a place for only female editors to congregate and discuss. Turns out, women often use the word "just" as an unnecessary qualifier to come off as non-threatening. Carrie walked us through the conversation that led to the group's creation, and how it's grown since. Finally, Carrie explained her coaching business and how she works with both podcast creators and podcast editors. And she explains how she's adapted her business in the wake of COVID-19.Resources:Carrie's YaYa Podcasting: http://yayapodcasting.com/Jon's JAG in Detroit Podcasts: http://www.jagindetroit.com/

Coming up, Michelle Miller Levitt of Heil Sound talks about how to select the right microphone for livestreaming and podcasting and explains some of the differences between Heil microphones. I had the opportunity to broadcast live from Podcast Movement using the Heil PR 40 microphone, which did a great job of cutting through the noise and making it easy for listeners to hear the conversation. Thanks to Heil for providing the mics, boom arms, shock mounts and headphones. I also met our guest Michelle Miller Levitt at the Heil booth, where I tested several different Heil microphones and came away quite impressed with how the PR 40, PR 35 and PR 30 worked with my voice. Michelle Miller Levitt has been with Heil Sound for 14 of the 15 years the company has been in the Pro Audio business. Michelle serves as Heil's Creative and Marketing Director. She's also a talented voice over artist. Her microphone of choice is the Heil PR 35, the same microphone used by Stevie Wonder! THE FOUNDER: BOB HEIL Heil Sound was founded by Bob Heil, who worked as a sound engineer with The Grateful Dead and The Who, developing unique touring sound systems for those bands. He is know for creating the modern template for rock music sound systems. Bob also invented the Heil Talk Box made famous in the 1970s by artists such as Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton.
