Del Seymour, a former homeless addict known as the "mayor of the Tenderloin," and his biographer, Alison Owings, offer a raw, street-level view of San Francisco's most notorious neighborhood. Seymour, the subject of Owings' book, "Mayor of the Tenderloin," pulls no punches, exposing the paradoxical allure of homelessness and the failings of well-meaning nonprofits. His insights challenge conventional wisdom about addiction and urban poverty, while his Tenderloin walking tours and Code Tenderloin jobs programs demonstrate his enduring hope.

The Tenderloin is known as the grittiest neighborhood in San Francisco. From the high crime rate to the common drug use, most people wouldn't be caught walking through after dark. But today Del is walking me through the streets of the Tenderloin and showing me his unique perspective. Before Del was a San Francisco community activist and the secular mayor of the Tenderloin, he was a drug user on these very streets for 18 years. Because of that unique experience, he's intimately aware of how to bring real community issues to the local government. From the historic halls of Glide, to Code Tenderloin, an academy that teaches people how to code, to pivotal encounters with local figures like Pastor Joe, Del's mission is clear: to uplift the Tenderloin community through compassion, resourcefulness, and unwavering commitment. You may have heard on KCBS about the new ad campaign in San Francisco's Tenderloin and SOMA neighborhoods, to call attention to the fentanyl crisis on the City's streets. People who have worked for years in those neighborhoods are fed up with what they see as a lack of action by City Hall. Among those supporting the “That's Fentalife” campaign is Del Seymour, a longtime Tenderloin activist who originally led walking tours through the neighborhood to highlight what was good about it. He then founded Code Tenderloin, which runs a range of programs to help people in the area. He is also co-chair of San Francisco's Local Homeless Coordinating Board. KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Del Seymour, along with KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising

The Prison Post #29 begins a series of conversations with CROP Organization's Ready for Life Associates. We want to welcome the first Associate to be on our podcast, Luis-Miguel Bermudez. He will forever hold the honor of being the first Associate in CROP's Ready for Life Virtual Training Program to share his powerful story and experience on our show. We are proud to have Luis on The Prison Post and grateful that he's found tremendous value in our program. CROP's Ready for Life Program provides: Three months of Leadership Development provided by CROP, Financial Literacy provided by Beneficial State Bank, and IC3 Digital Literacy training provided by Linked In. CROP also provides three months of career training in Business to Business Sales in Tech. We have partnered with Code Tenderloin and Checkr to provide this training and employment opportunities upon graduation. In this episode Luis shares stories from his personal life growing up, how the choices that led to his incarceration in San Francisco, the challenges of being justice involved, and his experience after nearly one month in Ready for Life. Luis taps into his biggest transformational experiences in the leadership development program and how the community we are creating has become a great support system and positive environment. In short, he shares his pain points and how he's working to overcome any and all barriers that hindered him in the past. Luis shares what it's like to go through Ready for Life with proximate leaders directing the program versus what is typically given by parole, probation, and the CDCR system. Furthermore, he shares the biggest challenge of his life that led to his way of thinking and incarceration and how he's overcoming that today through his rap and vision to build a non profit that helps the youth with the challenges he experienced. Luis is gaining maximum value for his life and generously sharing his personal stories and to learn and stand alongside others in their personal growth. At the 41st minute of this show Luis courageously raps and offers his most traumatic experiences in life and how he is going to use his trauma to help heal other people who've gone through similar experiences. Luis is a powerful example of what it means to be a Man Built for Others. This episode has quickly become one of my favorites and it's mainly because of the power, love, courage, generosity, and service that Luis is willing to bring to CROP, his community of Associates, his family, and community. Welcome to Episode 5, with Maria Judice. Maria is an award-winning writer and director, who also founded INDIGO IMPACT in 2016 with a mission to bring left of center stories and creators to global audiences as an Impact Producer. She worked for such titles like DREAMSTATES starring Saul Williams, Haiti’s first Oscar selection called AYITI MON AMOUR, and SXSW breakout JINN by Oakland native Nijla Mumin. She brings affordable music, literature, art, and performance to the Bay Area as a Co-Curator of the MATATU FESTIVAL. She sits on the Diversity Board of SF FILM and Advisory Board of Code Tenderloin. WIRED magazine called Maria a “filmmaker provocateur” bridging technology thinking with art making. Here she talks about the decolonization of docs, how to build relationships with audiences and communities and about what an Oscar campaign entails.   Show notes: Thinking about your strategy before you enter the festival circuit is crucial. Even if you get into a top festival, it's about marketing your screening to fill the room with the right people who can amplify your message. You can get into a top festival and have very few people attend your premiere if you dont promote it properly ahead of time ! Depending on your goals, strategy will vary. If a film is meant for impact, or to screen widely, or to be a career milestone, all this will determine your priorities and the people you should meet. Oscar campaigns: Ayiti Mon Amour was the first Haitian Oscar nominee ever (short-listed for the final nominations), and just getting the pre-selection in was a huge deal as most films selected have a lot of money for marketing campaigns. Their team used this campaign to connect with the Haitian diaspora and make people think about Haiti in a new way, away from the poverty porn. The goal was also to put the director Guetty Felin on the map for her next career opportunities, which was a success. Very important to be realistic: if you don't have the money or star power, you need to take a step back and have realistic goals and do all the outreach necessary to cut through the clutter.  Until you're rich or famous, you do the work for people to come to you.  Maria has very real conversations with filmmakers who approach her about connecting with a specific community. If you're a white man who made a film about people of color, as is often the case, you might not be the right person to have those dialogues and might have to take a backseat during screenings, and let people from the community lead the conversation. You also can't expect people of color to want to embrace your film. Always ask yourself: Am I the right person to tell this story ? Do I have a genuine connection to the community I am filming ? How can I make them participants and not just subjects? It's a constant checking in. Once we turn the camera on, we have impacted their world, and can't pretend we are not participating with another person, and with that comes accountability and responsibility. If you made a film about or for underserved audiences, don't think of them as a pipeline to get your film seen. It's a complex relationship that takes time, especially for films about hard topics. Figure out early on and in-person how that audience is connected and rooted into the subject matter. It's "Holistic filmmaking" - treating your audiences as participants who help you curate and lead those conversations and the path of the film. When you do engage with audiences at screenings, it's also about creating a genuine connection and serving your audiences. They will always sniff out dishonesty and lack of authenticity. Treat your audiences with respect and intelligence. They are also your number one ambassadors ! Partnership building advice: look at what is around you, what partners do you already have in your community, the groups you already belong to, are involved in or who have invested in you ? Look at the low hanging fruits first. Relationships: show up to other filmmakers' stuff, be there for your community, remind yourself aboutt he support you do have around you and nurture those relationships.

A South Californian native, Neil Shah would never have thought that a walking tour of Tenderloin with Del Seymour could practically change his life forever as well as the many lives of homeless people around the Tenderloin neighborhood. Neil basically never stopped hustling, jumping from med school to law school to business school, getting an MBA at UC Irvine, and getting locked up in prison for his third DUI. But it was his passion for helping people that got him volunteering at different non profit projects and organizations. Neil is now the Head of Business Development and Partnerships at Code Tenderloin where they have partnered with a whole bunch of startups and organizations in order to relentlessly help homeless people break into tech, basically disrupting the career pathway and transforming people’s lives.
