Have you ever been watching a classic vampire movie like “Fright Night” or “The Lost Boys” and thought, “This is good, but this could be great with two of the guy who played Apollo Creed's kid in those ‘Creed' movies as well as some blues music and a dash of racial commentary!”? Well, put up your black square on Instagram and clutch your George Floyd bobblehead in celebration because a celebration is a comin'! Your reason for celebrating is the movie “Sinners” from director Ryan Coogler. He directed the Black Panther movies and the first two Creed movies and sinks his teeth into the vampire genre with his latest movie. No “Wakanda Forever” in this. More like “Live Forever” in this southern-fried take on vampire movies. Coogler's favorite leading man, Michael B. Jordan plays both Smoke and Stacks (Get it. Smokestack!), identical twins who've made a name and some money in the criminal game. Now they're coming home back down south from Chicago to open up their own juke joint for dancing, drinking and gambling. Their own little taste of Vegas in the Deep South. Along the way they pick up their younger cousin, Preacher Boy Sammie, who is very talented with a guitar and a blues voice from the heavens. He's played by the impressive Miles Caton. Before long, some vampires show up to try to make the good times last forever but in a blood-sucking evil way and the movie goes from bluesy crime drama to stakes in the heart and burning vampires. Is it worth your time at the theater? Check out this episode to find out! “Sinners” also stars Delroy Lindo, Jack O'Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, Yao, Saul Williams and Omar Miller. Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s. In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident. His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father. But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. Hip hop and jazz music have an intimate relationship. That's been true since the beginning. Our next guest is Shabaka Hutchings and while he might be a jazz musician, he is also a hip hop head who thoughtfully integrates his preferences into his most recent project “Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace”. The album is also his first as a flute player, an instrument he went to exceptional lengths to become familiar with. He is joined on the project by incredible artists such as Saul Williams, Carlos Niño, Laraaji, Esperanza Spalding, Brandee Younger and Floating Points. It's also the only place where you'll find both Andre 3000 and E L U C I D as featured guests. We talked with Shabaka about all of the above and we discussed his album pick for this episode - “Doris” by Earl Sweatshirt. Records and recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey—where John Coltrane cut A Love Supreme and many other jazz classics were committed to tape—the album finds Hutchings setting down his sax in favor of a variety of flutes and pondering questions about what it means to be, what it means to do, and how one gives themselves over to energizing forces. Joined by guests including Saul Williams, Euclid, Esperanza Spalding, Floating Points, Laraaji, poet Anum Iyapo, Carlos Nino, and fellow flute devotee André 3000, Hutchings drifts into a gentle, new age-inspired zone, blending spiritual jazz expression with ambient sensibilities. “What does it mean to have music of spiritual substance?“What does it mean to be spiritual? What is spirit?” This week on Transmissions, Shabaka Hutchings joins us to discuss that force, his shift toward the flute, the influence of Outkast, and connecting with his father on a creative level. Shabaka Hutchings grew up between the UK and Barbados. He started playing clarinet as a young boy in Barbados and eventually moved back to England to go to music school in the early 2000s. After college he began a period of working furiously on a kaleidoscopic range of projects and became an icon of the new sound of London jazz, which integrated African rhythms and modes, Caribbean and Middle eastern sounds and was largely danceable. Shabaka himself has never fully embraced the jazz label. While the music is highly improvised, and it owes much to the American jazz tradition, his influences are very broad. Over the course of the past decade, the majority of his touring and recorded work has been with three bands: Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors. In these formations he displayed a fundamental approach to creative practice in different contexts spanning Afro-Caribbean fusion, London dance music club culture and the South African jazz tradition. Part of his signature on the saxophone has been inspired by rappers, and his sound is often evocative of the human voice, conversational, expressive, and rhythmic. A somewhat chance encounter with a flute maker in Japan several years ago led him to develop an interest in the Shakuhachi flute tradition, and during covid he committed himself to the flute. Last year he announced that he would be putting away his saxophone and ending all of his bands to dedicate himself almost exclusively to playing wooden flutes. His latest release Perceive its beauty, Acknowledge its Grace (Impulse!) is his first full length album since making that transition. It's more meditative, contemplative and introspective than his earlier work. But it's still clearly Shabaka. The album features appearances by pianist Jason Moran, drummer Nasheet Waits, harpists Brandee Younger and Charles Overton, vocalists Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney and Saul Williams, string wizard Miguel Atwood Ferguson and percussionist Carlos Niño. I talked to Shabaka earlier this year at Winter Jazzfest as he was embarking on a new adventure, both personally and musically. It was an absolutely fascinating conversation about his own creative development and philosophy, his new record, and why this historical moment is “showing the importance of slowing down, of patience, of contemplation.” www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com/ www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

We're joined this week by two of our Patreon backers, Stuart White and Richard Gould, to talk about albums they've each chosen: Bloodline, the reunion LP from formative UK goth-punk act 1919 which found them tackling resurgent political and economic crises, and the self-titled record from France's Les Clopes, which puts a bemused indie spin on some classic French coldwave and minimal wave sounds. We're also talking recent Laibach and festival news, plus some talk about a recent Moor Mother and Saul Williams show.

This is a special edition episode where I am joined by C.E. Hoffman to talk about Taylor Swift's new album, Midnights. We geek out about our favorite tracks, dive deep into how Taylor has grown as an artist, admit that neither of us were "swifties", and attempt to figure out what kind of literature Taylor Swift might be into. For those who don't know C.E. Hoffman: C.E. Hoffman is a published writer from Canada. Sluts and Whores, their #OwnVoices Urban Fantasy debut, was released Feb 2021 by Thurston Howl Publications. They've edited the e-zine Visceral Uterus since 2012. Meanwhile, their novels incubate. Inspirations run from Edith Wharton to Martin Millar to Zadie Smith. C's brain hosts tea parties for Haruki Murakami and C S Lewis. J D Salinger rants to Allen Ginsberg while Allen makes eyes at Irvine Welsh. Michelle Tea recites with Assata Shakur, Joy Harjo, and Saul Williams. Shakespeare's always there, but he's shy. So are the musicians. (MCR, Marianas Trench, The Hold Steady, Azealia Banks, Eminem, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meredith Wilson…) C devours books. Favourites of late: There There by Tommy Orange, Jack Wang's We Two Alone, and Neil S Reddy's forthcoming JubJub Juice. They're psyched to read Second Bell by Gabriela Houston, whilst enjoying Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo. C writes about magic, sex, and death. They hug trees, love cats, and clearly dig Taylor Swift's new album. Latest episode from Spoken Label (Spoken Word / Artist Podcast) features a dear friend making her debut, Polly Anna Rose. Polly Anna Rose "teaches yoga, manages projects, and likes to run, meditate, talk, think and make art about reframing (dis)ability and justice issues. She has recently launched a Podcast - Well-Healed, on just these topics, and is taking submissions. Polly writes as a means for survival. She performs from a place of compassionate rage. Her narratives interrogate the endemic corruption within our global political and economic systems. Sometimes an incantation, but more often a call for action, such as Matka Země (mother earth), her work draws on a range of influences from Mary Oliver to Saul Williams, Kae Tempest to Ted Hughes. Born in Oxford, hailing from Welsh and Czech lineage, Polly's work walks the line between protest poetry and autobiographical sojourning. Living in the South of England she always felt a profound and melancholic hiraeth. Polly moved to Salford in her twenties to complete her studies in Visual Arts, and was adopted as an honorary Northerner. Her voice is worth a listen, whether you hear it spoken, or written. Her recent poetry collection - Severní Někde (North Somewhere) - will be published later this year. Alongside this release, is a second installment of an artist collective zine, produced by international collaborations with poets, visual artists, writers and photographers. As mentioned, she is also is in the process of producing a series of Podcasts under the moniker- Well Healed. So//Journ 2 is out for print in September 2022. Email: pollyannasteiner@gmail for submissions or follow @hiclamour and @yogawithpollyanna for updates." NB. The band / project I was referring during this session with Polly now has a name "Polly Ocean" (decided on after this session) and our debut EP will be following in September all being well and will be available from oceaninabottle.bandcamp.com

Taika Waititi helming another Thor movie was always going to mean a great deal of silliness along with whatever planetary crisis the MCU brain trust cooked up, but with THOR: LOVE & THUNDER, the question has become: how much silliness is too much? Put another way: how many goats is too many goats? Adam defends his 1-star Letterboxd review and Josh (sort of ) defends Waititi. Multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that's a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends. Award-winning Canadian reggae artist Jay Douglas talks about his first ever blues album, Confession. Poet and musician Saul Williams discusses his directorial debut, Neptune Frost, and the decades-long artistic journey that inspired it. Our books columnist Jael Richardson fills us in on her pick for the perfect beach read: Jameela Green Ruins Everything by Zarqa Nawaz. Composer and musician Jonathan Kawchuk talks about his momentous new project, Everywhen, which he recorded in the Rocky Mountains.
Saul Williams is a legend who refuses to rest on his laurels. A pioneer of the Hip hop meets spoken word movement of the 90s, he created a lane that drove poetry from the musty halls of academe into the modern era. As a recording artist, he has worked with Rick Rubin, Trent Reznor, Nas, The Fugees, Erykah Badu, KRS-One, Zack De La Rocha, De La Soul, as well as poets Allen Ginsberg and Sonia Sanchez. Perhaps his most ambitious project to date is Neptune Frost, a sci-fi Afro-Futurist musical movie written, composed and co-directed by Williams. We talk about his love of Broadway, the writing of a modern musical, African e-waste camps where our tech goes to die, hip hop's continued relevance as mixed media, making connections between the ancient and the future and much more. Inua Ellams, the Nigerian-born, award-winning poet, playwright and performer, talks to John Wilson about the most important influences and experiences that have inspired his own creativity. Inua won huge acclaim for his play the Barbershop Chronicles, which was a sell-out twice at the National Theatre and went on to tour the UK. His adaptation of Chekhov's Three Sisters reset during the Biafran war - also for the National - is now on the A Level syllabus, and he is the author of several books of poetry including The Half God Of Rainfall. Inua was born in Plateau State, Nigeria, moved to Britain as a child, and also spent time in Dublin during his teens. He recalls growing up in a dual faith household, with his Christian mother and Muslim father. Initially inspired by the tales of heroism he discovered in X-Men comics, he became a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. He reveals that the 2001 album Amethyst Rockstar, by the American hip hop poet Saul Williams, was a huge inspiration on him as a writer and performer. Inua also talks movingly about his recent British citizenship which, despite being at the heart of the British theatrical establishment, took many years of struggle to secure. Producer: Edwina Pitman
