Our mission is to redefine the word "professionalism" by empowering Latino/ Latina/ Latinx communities to be their authentic selves. When we are told to be professional, in many ways we are told to not be ourselves. On this podcast, we have candid conversations and explore the conflict that we often face between being our authentic selves & "professionalism". The podcast is named ¿Quién Tú Eres? because that’s the question that we want each guest to answer. Listen to find out who we really are...when we stop code-switching.

Council Member Kevin Riley is the Chair of the Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises and the Co-Chair of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, which is the largest caucus in the New York City Council.  As Chair, he serves to prioritize creating equal opportunity and access for communities of color within New York City through the legislative, oversight, and budgetary powers of the Council. He has worked to ensure that our infrastructure empowers marginalized communities and addresses the housing crisis with initiatives for affordable housing and homeownership. For nearly the past year, the Council has approved 40 land use applications that will result in over 12,000 projected new housing units, of which over 63 percent are affordable. Under Council Member Kevin C. Riley's leadership as Co-Chair of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, the caucus has passed the historic FDNY Diversity bill package. Signed into law, the bills aim to address true equity in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups within the department, as well as requiring the implementation of diversity, inclusion, anti-discrimination, and anti-harassment training. In this week's episode, Kevin shares how connecting with Black male role models changed his life. Growing up, Kevin saw his father imprisoned and deported, and it skewed his idea of what his future would look like for the worse. It wasn't until he was encouraged by Black men who were in political office did he see himself as someone who could make impactful change. Today, Kevin is a New York City Council Member representing the 12th Council District. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Julia Mejia.  Born in the Dominican Republic, Julia arrived in the neighborhood of Dorchester when she was five years old. Raised by a single mother who was undocumented for most of her childhood, she was forced at an early age to speak up on behalf of her mother and others who felt ignored by the very institutions that were supposed to serve them.  As a proud graduate of the Boston Public Schools, she was the first in her family to graduate high school and college and the first to purchase her own home in Boston. Driven by a lifelong pursuit of justice and equity, she is proud to have created countless opportunities for others to step into their power and advocate for positive change. She created and led a civic engagement group focused on voter registration, is the founder of a nonprofit education network, and worked on national social justice campaigns as a producer for MTV. In this week's episode, I meet up with Boston's City Councilor Julia Mejia to discuss her journey towards politics. As a first-generation Dominican American child, she often found herself advocating for her community as she was translating for them. As an adult, she continued to advocate for her community as the first Latina reporter for MTV's News and Docs category. Julia joined politics as an experiment - she wanted to see if she could run and win and uplift her community. And she won by one vote! No one truly knows, because it's impossible to predict the future. That said, we all swear that we can because we make up these stories in our heads every day. The funny part about it...is that they are rarely positive stories that we tell ourselves. Why don't I tell myself a story that involves me talking about what we're building...the post goes viral...and millions of people sign up for the App Launch Waitlist? The dilemma is that I fear talking about it because someone may steal my idea, but if I don't talk about it...then there wouldn't even be users for the product. While she thoroughly enjoyed her work and the clients she served (mostly undocumented immigrants), she sought to expand her knowledge within employment law and began working for a firm that specialized in workplace discrimination and sexual harassment claims. As someone who had personally experienced sexual harassment and stalking while in law school, Janelle took a personal interest in representing workers who had faced similar experiences in the workplace with little to no protections afforded to them. Hundreds of represented employees later, Janelle joined a hiring and payroll startup as the Leader of Labor Affairs and oversaw legal matters relating to labor and employment law, business contracts, and general counseling work as needed. Janelle founded Gen Esq Law to provide quality affordable legal options to small businesses and employees. Through her TikTok educational videos, Janelle continues to dedicate her time and talents to helping make the workplace a more fair, appropriate, and prosperous environment for all. In this week's episode, Janelle tells all about her life as a Latina in law and how she found herself opening her own practice. Despite trying to stick to my ideal morning routine—waking up early, hydrating, journaling, hitting the gym—I've been thrown off, especially when my schedule doesn't go as planned. Ironically, marking my three-year anniversary out of corporate life made me reflect on the importance of routine for my mental health. Yet, I've struggled with self-doubt, especially on days I felt unproductive. A successful speaking engagement gave me a moment of validation, reminding me why I do what I do, despite the internal battles with imposter syndrome. I've realized it's crucial to celebrate the wins, no matter how small, and change the narrative I tell myself. Taking care of my mental health is essential, not a sign of weakness. It's about being kind to ourselves, recognizing our accomplishments, and understanding our worth isn't tied to productivity. This week's guest is Ana Paola Ana Paola is a first-generation Mexican-American raised in Sacramento, CA and she has been creating content in different formats for over 7 years! When she moved to New York in June of 2021, she was in a bit of a creative slump and resorted to TikTok for entertainment, as one does. She'd scroll past endless NYC day-in-the-life videos and quickly realized those videos were not relatable to her. The creators didn't look like her, live like her, or sound like her, so she said, “Why not make my own?” And she did! But in Spanglish, because that's how her brain works. She posted her first TikTok in July of 2021 and the rest is history. Since then, she's amassed an audience of over 150,000 Spanglish speakers who finally see themselves represented in some way. She hopes to inspire others to continue to show up as they are and take up space because we belong everywhere.  In this week's episode, Ana tells us all about how she created a creative career herself even when her style of video editing wasn't popular yet. After walking away from her very religious community and being shunned by almost everyone she knew, she started fending for herself and deciding who she wanted to be. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Eddin Martinez.  Eddin has been instrumental in the success of a ton of dope podcasts - and these are some of the biggest podcasts in the game. WHOREible Decisions, Flagrant, The Brilliant Idiots, the New Rory & Mal podcast, and many others. He's been an engineer, photographer, and even DJ. He's what some people call a jack of all trades. A lot of time he's been in the background - engineering, working the tech, making sure that he's doing whatever he can to make the show run smoothly. These days he's thinking about flipping the camera around and sharing more about his perspective, his expertise, and his story.  In this week's episode, Eddin tells us how being his most authentic self led him to an incredible career in content production. Growing up, Eddin was given the same speech, as usual, to become a lawyer or find a 9 to 5 job. But he knew that wasn't his calling. He spent years DJing, networking, and learning as much as he could about all kinds of production processes. He's talked his way into incredible rooms and given himself the most amazing opportunities. Tune in to Eddin's episode to find out how he did it all and stayed true to his most authentic self. Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Pabel Martinez. Pabel Martinez is a native New Yorker, storyteller, and former tech executive. Throughout his career, Pabel was trained to believe that many parts of his identity were unprofessional. Pabel would dedicate days out of the week to study "white popular American culture" and memorizing scripts he would later use for work conversations. He knew that talking about Bad Bunny and shows like Insecure, would not make him relatable. Instead, he would binge-watch seasons of Riverdale since it would help him build relationships with colleagues and senior leaders. The assimilation became overwhelming, and it was at the expense of his identity & mental health. As a result, Pabel's mission in life became redefining professionalism by empowering authenticity. In 2020, he launched Plurawl to bring this mission to life. In this week's episode, Pabel opens up about his recent feelings through a video journal entry. He talks about how he feels both proud of his friends for their achievements and also jealous because he would love to have the same opportunities. These conflicting feelings can be damaging to his relationships and to himself, so in this episode, he discusses how he supports his friends and their accomplishments while also holding space for his own negative feelings.  A heads up - paid subscribers of the podcast will have access to more of these personal video journal entries in 2024!  Follow Pabel on: Website: https://plurawl.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/plurawl/  TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@plurawl  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pabelmartinez/  To book a speaking engagement email hola@plurawl.com Podcast production for this episode was provided by CCST.
