Habitat for Humanity Plans 7 Affordable Housing Units in Haverhill's Mount Washington

Essex County Habitat for Humanity, currently in the midst of one Haverhill homebuilding project, is moving on to another in the city's Mount Washington neighborhood. The nonprofit recently agreed to purchase a single-family home and property at 512 Washington St. for $650,000 and has the city's blessing to convert it into seven affordable housing units. Director of Charitable Giving Kevin Hudson made the revelation while a guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program.“We are currently raising funds to acquire property on Washington Street where we  plan to build seven new homes,” Hudson said, noting that in addition to the purchase price, Habitat must raise about $2 million to fund the renovation and construction.Hudson later explained the plan is to renovate the current house on the property, owned by Keith Boucher, to create three units and then build two duplex houses.Andrew K. Herlihy, division director for the city's Community Development Department, said the city has committed $149,173 from federal HOME Program funds to help Habitat with the purchase of the property.“It is a proposal we support in part because home ownership in the Mount Washington neighborhood, where this property is located, is the lowest in the city,” Herlihy said, adding that the project would most likely have to come before City Council for a special permit.Hudson said Habitat hopes to have the project funded by the fall of 2025 and that groundbreaking would then follow in 10 to 12 months.Habitat already has one duplex under construction at 41 Curtis St. in Haverhill. This Thursday, May 8, some 40 women—wielding hammers, screwdrivers and saws—will descend on the site for a Habitat Women Build event.“It started as an opportunity for women who wanted to volunteer and to be able to do so in an unintimidating environment with other women who don't have any or as much experience in construction and it has really grown from there across the country,” Hudson said.Among the women volunteering that day are a crew from the North Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in North Andover. The Curtis Street project is Habitat's fourth in Haverhill. The public is invited to view the progress of the Curtis Street house at a Hard Hat Tour and reception on Thursday, May 15, at 5:30 p.m.., Hudson said.A crew of women are also volunteering next week at a Habitat site in Hamilton where five duplexes are currently under construction. Habitat expects to break ground on a duplex in Ipswich and one in Wenham soon and is currently in the process of permittingSupport the show

As the second-richest self-made woman in the U.S. music industry according to Forbes, Swift's global tour is set to include over 140 concerts across five continents throughout 2023 and 2024. Alicia Modestino, an associate professor of public policy and economics at Northeastern University, highlights the significant impact of Swift's tour. With skyrocketing ticket prices, record-breaking attendance, and impressive revenues, Swift's tour is leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. Each show of her Eras tour has grossed around $13 million, totaling more than $300 million after the initial 22 concerts. Swift's ability to evoke powerful emotions through her music, according to David Herlihy, a professor at Northeastern specializing in the music industry, justifies fans' willingness to pay premium prices for an unforgettable experience. Beyond ticket sales, Swift's tour revenue is supplemented by sponsorships and merchandise sales. Devoted fans seek memorabilia to commemorate their Eras experience, further contributing to Swift's substantial earnings. However, Herlihy acknowledges that costs such as staging, crew compensation, and profit sharing with songwriters do impact Swift's overall earnings. Swift's influence extends beyond personal profit, as her presence drives economic activity in cities hosting her concerts. Visitor spending on accommodations, dining, transportation, and various local businesses significantly bolsters the local economies. Notably, a single Swift performance in Colorado was projected to inject $140 million into the state's GDP, while her tour stimulated travel and tourism in regions across the nation. In a surprising move, Swift distributed $55 million in bonuses to her Eras tour crew, showcasing her commitment to equitable compensation and fostering a positive work environment. This gesture aligns with broader trends of employers sharing profits with their workers, especially in a post-COVID era of increased profits and tighter labor markets. As Swift's tour continues to captivate audiences globally, her strategic business decisions underscore her commitment to both artistic expression and economic impact. While her profound generosity sets a precedent, it remains to be seen if others in the entertainment industry will follow suit. Swift's unique ability to combine emotion and capitalism places her at the forefront of a new era of celebrity entrepreneurship, leaving an enduring mark on the economy and labor landscape. Reference article: https://news.northeastern.edu/2023/08/11/taylor-swift-economy-impact/

Jeffrey joins the podcast to discuss the prevalence of English in the academic ecosystem and in research publishing. Jeffrey critiques the lackadaisical approach US institutions take towards Spanish language content and research and makes a strong argument to follow the Puerto-Rican model which sees greater opportunity, equality, and sophistication in multilingual academic research. About his book: Despite a pronounced shift away from Eurocentrism in Spanish and Hispanic studies departments in US universities, many implicit and explicit vestiges of coloniality remain firmly in place. While certain national and linguistic expressions are privileged, others are silenced with predictable racial and gendered results.  Decolonizing American Spanish: Eurocentrism and the Limits of Foreignness in the Imperial Ecosystem (U Pittsburgh Press, 2022) challenges not only the hegemony of Spain and its colonial pedagogies, but also the characterization of Spanish as a foreign language in the United States. By foregrounding Latin American cultures and local varieties of Spanish and reconceptualizing the foreign as domestic, Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera works to create new conceptual maps, revise inherited ones, and institutionalize marginalized and silenced voices and their stories. Considering the University of Puerto Rico as a point of context, this book brings attention to how translingual solidarity and education, a commitment to social transformation, and the engagement of student voices in their own languages can reinvent colonized education.
