An environmental scientist involved in a judicial review against the proposed Ennis Data Centre insists the facility is no closer to coming to fruition despite a recent high court judgement. Last week, Justice Richard Humphreys ruled that An Bord Pleanála's error not to consider a single bat in a barn near the the proposed Tulla Road Campus should not stop the €1.2bn development. This is only the first phase of the judicial review, next the court must decide if planners followed due legal process when assessing environmental impacts, after that it will be referred back to An Bord Pleanála for a new planning decision. Ennis resident and appellant Colin Doyle has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that he believes the plans are ludicrous.

Today I talked to Karen Odden about her new book Under a Veiled Moon (Crooked Lane Books, 2022). When the Princess Alice pleasure boat collides with a huge iron-hulled cargo ship on the Thames River, it's split in half, and only 130 of the 650 passengers and crew members survive. It's 1878, and clues point to sabotage by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which has already used violence in hopes of restoring Home Rule. Inspector Michael Corravan, who was born in Ireland, orphaned, and raised in London by an Irish family, knows that the British will never allow Home Rule in Ireland if the IRB is to blame for the disaster. Meanwhile, violence is rising in his old neighborhood, and Colin Doyle, the youngest of his adopted family, has joined one of the violent Irish gangs. He refuses Corravan's offer of help, which puts the entire family in danger. With support from colleagues, his good friends Mr. Gordon Stiles and Mrs. Belinda Gale, Inspector Corravan presses on to uncover the truth. KAREN ODDEN received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University, writing her dissertation on Victorian railway disasters and the origins of PTSD. She has taught at UW-Milwaukee, written essays for numerous books and journals, and edited for the journal Victorian Literature and Culture (Cambridge UP). She freely admits she might be more at home in Victorian London than today, especially when she tries to do anything complicated on her iPhone. All of her mysteries are set in 1870s London. Her first novel, A LADY IN THE SMOKE, about a young woman in a 1874 railway crash, was a USA Today bestseller. In A DANGEROUS DUET, Nell Hallam, an ambitious young pianist stumbles on a notorious crime ring while playing in a Soho music hall. In A TRACE OF DECEIT, Annabel Rowe, a young painter at the Slade School of Art, must delve below the glitter of the art and auction world to uncover the truth about her brother's murder. A member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, Karen was awarded a 2021 Grant from Arizona Commission on the Arts. Under a Veiled Moon is the second novel in her Inspector Corravan series, following Down a Dark River. An avid desert hiker, Karen lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her family and her rescue beagle muse, Rosy. Learn more about your ad choices. Colin started running just three years ago. I always love to hear stories about people who decided to start running when they were in their 30s or older. It gives me examples to use when someone tells me they think it’s too late in life for them to become a runner! Colin ran his first marathon before he even knew what the words “tempo” and “intervals” mean. Colin lives in Ireland, and what is so fun about this episode is that although he lives across the ocean from me, we have so much in common and so much to talk about. See…this is running…a community you can join regardless of where you live and regardless of whether you’ve been running since 1976 or 2016. Although Colin has only been running for three years, he’s progressed quickly and has some fast PRs. He’s also a father of four and starts his runs early in the morning (at a time some would still call “the middle of the night”) so he can be back home when his kids start their day. Colin also explains how running has helped him with atrial fibrillation, he has a goal of breaking three hours in the marathon, and he has a goal of running a marathon in every European country. Some interesting takeaways from this conversation are that I have no clue how to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit and “BBQ” doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere. Also, my husband thought my accent became increasingly more “Texan” the longer I talked to Colin. Like I needed a competing accent or something.

"I had never been to a glacier. I had this vision of them being these giant massive things that were just there. I never really thought about how much of a living organism they are. Growing and retreating, melting, and expanding and changing. When we went on hikes on the glacier the pathway changes constantly because of the nature of the glacier and the route. With climate change these things that have been around for thousands of years are disappearing. This object I thought was a permanent structure has this really ephemeral, impermanent quality." How would you communicate the enormity of a glacier or the complexity of global warming, with a sculpture or drawing? Would you travel to Iceland to see for yourself the scale of the issue and personally trace the many miles of ice that have been lost? Dameon Lester did just that, motivated by a desire to go beyond just looking at images on the internet. He wanted to use all of his senses and see it for himself as he crafted a body of work with the goal of communicating the issues, anxieties, denials, decisions, and inter-connectedness of us all, the planet, and the consequences of our actions related to climate change. Completing two residencies in Iceland in the last year allowed him to explore different materials and experiment in a studio, while also exploring the ephemeral landscape of that distant place. The tactic that he chose was to pare everything down to the most simple and basic forms as a way to filter all the elements under consideration into a cohesive approach. The current results of his work and travel, around the issue of climate change, is the exhibition Serene Disturbance, on display at grayDUCK gallery until October 28, 2018. In her spare time she calls in Bigfoot sightings to the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife. They are heartily sick of hearing from her. About Spirit Ridge: San Francisco in 1885 was a dangerous place for those who crossed Colin Doyle. To Nob Hill elite he was a successful businessman. To the underbelly of San Francisco he was The Mick, a criminal mastermind ruling from the shadows. If a buyer's tastes ran to opium, a whore, or a politician, The Mick could name a price. No one who betrayed him ever escaped the city alive. Until now.
