It's Cinco De Mayo and there's lots of great places to get your taco on. But at Lock 34 in Lockport, they're opening up their outdoor patio today and inviting llamas. So that sounds like the winner to me.

Dan Dunleavy, is currently the play by play voice for the Buffalo Sabres on MSG Western New York and WGR 550 radio in Buffalo. From 2016 until 2022, Dunleavy rotated with Hall of Fame announcer Rick Jeanneret, who was to retire after the 2016–17 season. Rick changed his mind about retiring despite the agreement he and the Sabres signed with Dunleavy, leaving Dunleavy to work on a year by year time table with the hope of eventually taking over as was offered by the NHL franchise. To partially compensate, Dunleavy's role was also expanded to include filling in as studio host for Brian Duff when not substituting for Jeanneret. Dan was about to call his third season of Toronto Maple Leaf radio play by play on The FAN590 and TSN1050 in the 2013-14 NHL season, when Buffalo approached him about taking over for Jeanneret. Dunleavy accepted, mainly because of his concerns about being split between the two Toronto stations, each owned by two of Canada's biggest multimedia conglomerates (Bell Media and Rogers Communications), both of whom also held ownership stakes in the Leafs.] The Sabres signed Dunleavy to a five-year contract that expires in 2018; Dunleavy has turned down other offers during his time with Buffalo and remains in negotiations for a contract extension. On May 9, 2021, unsure of whether or not he would return to the Sabres, he posted a potential farewell message in the event that he did not renew his contract. The Sabres publicly stated that they were interested in renewing Dunleavy's agreement. Since the last update, Dan has renewed once again as the voice of the Buffalo Sabres indefinitely. From December 2004 through January 2011, Dan called the World Junior Hockey Championships on The FAN Radio Network, alongside Jack Miller. That run included five straight gold medal wins for Canada, two gold medal wins for the United States and one gold medal win for Russia. In 2008, Dunleavy called the World Hockey Championships on the Fan Radio Network, working alongside former NHL'er Mark Osborne. The tournament was held between Halifax and Quebec City. Russia won gold, while Canada was the runner up. In 2010, Dunleavy called his first NHL game for the Buffalo Sabres who were playing in Anaheim, substituting for the vacationing Rick Jeanneret; Dunleavy called his first NHL TV game for The Sabres on MSG TV in Ottawa in January 2011 and becoming a permanent rotating announcer in 2013. In 2010, Dunleavy called his first Olympic hockey games, including the men's bronze medal game and the women's gold medal game at Canada Hockey Place (GM Place) in Vancouver. Dunleavy was the host for every Team Canada game on the FAN radio Network. Dan has also called Canadian Hockey League, American Hockey League, and National Lacrosse League games on Rogers Sportsnet. Dunleavy was the radio play by play voice for the Toronto Rock from 2000 to 2008. In 2009 Dan also served as their public address announcer during their home games. #dandunleavy #buffalosabres #playbyplayannouncer #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay Want to create live streams like this? During the 8 p.m. Saturday window this week, there was a cavalcade of the usual college football suspects on television. As you moved up and down the proverbial dial, there were Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and LSU all battling for touchdowns and eyeballs. Tucked in among that forest of masculinity was an unusual listing, namely the championship match of the National Women's Soccer League. History will note that the New York/New Jersey Gotham football club won the title over the Reign team based out of Seattle 2-1. It will also note that the match marked the end of the brilliant careers of Megan Rapinoe and Ali Krieger, two of the most decorated players in American soccer history. But history may also note that the score and outcome of the match were insignificant to what follows. In conjunction with the championship, the NWSL announced a new four-year media rights deal with four outlets – CBS, ESPN, Amazon and Scripps – worth $240 million. It's the largest media rights deal in women's team sports history and an otherworldly increase from the $1.5 million the league was getting from CBS just last year. As you might expect, entities are lining up to be a part of this burgeoning enterprise. The league will grow to 15 teams in the next three years, with groups in more than 12 other cities hoping to get on board. And the league is bringing on one notable prospective owner after another, adding female titans of industry as well as athletes from basketball, tennis, gymnastics, soccer and the other football. Now, just as every ice cream flavor or musical taste isn't for every person, so are some sports more interesting to folks than others. That's my not-so-subtle way of saying that soccer is not my cup of tea. I appreciate the athleticism and grace associated with the beautiful game and applaud those who play and love it. I'm just not one of them. That said, you can't help but be impressed with the steady growth women's professional sports in general, and soccer in particular, have shown in the U.S. From the seed planted with the women's World Cup win in 1998 to now, women's pro soccer has come along, at times in fits and spurts, but now standing on its own as a viable option for participation, investment and viewership. Much of the credit for the NWSL's growth must go to its commissioner, Jessica Berman, who, in just 20 months at the helm, has alternately nurtured and dragged the league firmly forward deep into the 21st century. Berman, who came to the NWSL after stints in the NHL and the National Lacrosse League, has led the charge to clean up the league following a desultory recent history of sexual abuse and misconduct allegations. As OL Reign defender Lauren Barnes told the Los Angeles Times, quote It'd be dumb not to invest in women's sports unquote. Indeed, the National Women's Soccer League has become the very smart play, And that's how I see it for this week. You can reach us via email with your questions and comments at Sports at Large at gmail.com. And follow me on Threads and Twitter at Sports at Large. Until next week, for all of us here, I'm Milton Kent. Thanks for listening and enjoy the games.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[A summer vacation re-release of a fan favorite episode from March 2019!] We celebrate our second anniversary with the intriguing background story of the original Major Indoor Soccer League, with the man who started it all – Ed Tepper.  A commercial real estate developer by trade, Tepper actually got his start in pro sports ownership as the owner of the original National Lacrosse League's Philadelphia Wings – only to switch allegiances to an inchoate indoor offshoot of the world's most popular sport after a chance exhibition (between the 1973 NASL champion Atoms and the Russian CSKA “Red Army” team) at Philadelphia's Spectrum on February 11, 1974.  Originally interested in the game's bespoke Astroturf-covered surface as a potential improvement for his fledgling box lacrosse club, Tepper (along with 11,700+ enthusiastic curiosity-seekers) instead became instantly attracted to the fast-paced action and high scoring of “indoor soccer” – and quickly resolved to make a professional sport out of it. In this illuminating interview, Tepper recounts some of the notable events and influential people along the journey from concept to the MISL's official debut kick (by Cincinnati Kids part-owner Pete Rose, no less) on December 22, 1978 at Uniondale, Long Island's Nassau Coliseum – including: Convincing ABA Virginia Squires owner (and eventual MISL commissioner) Earl Foreman of the game's potential; The instant credibility boost of signing American superstar goalkeeper Shep Messing; NASL commissioner Phil Woosnam's on-again, off-again interest in the indoor game; How (and why) NFL owners Carroll Rosenbloom and Al Davis wanted in; AND The unsung role of TV executive Bob Wussler in garnering attention for the fledgling circuit. PLUS: The untold tale of Tepper's very own (barely one-season long) MISL franchise – the New Jersey Rockets!

Great cities are measured in several ways - for The Best Ceats this usually involves taking stock of the restaurants, bars, hotels, and other forms of hospitality and entertainment available for people to enjoy. One major piece of that puzzle, is professional sports franchises and their relationship with their host city, or area. To learn more about this, I am joined by Paul Speaker, the CEO of the San Diego Seals, and the Las Vegas Desert Dogs - both franchises within the National Lacrosse League. However - as fate would have it - it isn't just local professional teams we get to discuss, as Paul and his team are running the logistics for the upcoming 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship. One of the most exciting world tournaments in all of sports, the championship is a celebration of the sport, culture, history, and the growth of one of the most exciting spectacles in the world. Dolich spent 15+ years in the Athletics' front office from 1980-94 during the Walter Haas era - inheriting the remnants of Charlie Finley's parsimonious ownership, helping usher in "Billy Ball", nurturing a promising farm system, and ultimately, reaping the rewards with a 1989 World Series championship over the market's "other team" - the San Francisco Giants. But before we get there, we take an important introductory detour into Dolich's other exploits, replete with notable stops of keen interest to a certain little podcast - like the NASL's Washington Diplomats, the original National Lacrosse League's Maryland Arrows, and the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #150 Features Colin Cosell, New York Mets Public Address Announcer, and Yaffi L'Vova, Author and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Colin Cosell has a famous last name, but the career he has forged is not due to a name, but rather it is a result of hard work, perseverance, and in his case, proving that nice guys do in fact finish first.  He joined us one fine afternoon when Leonard was unable to make it, but Gary Mack, the host of the Mets Musings podcast as well as cohost of the Baseball Talk Radio Show podcast, filled in quite admirably.  Colin shares a few stories involving his grandfather, Howard Cosell.  He discusses being one half of the public address announcing team at Citifield and how he got the job.  Anyone who is interested in this type of career would be wise to listen to Colin as he talks about the three C's (be clear, be concise, be correct) which come directly from the late great New York Yankees PA announcer, Bob Shepard.  Colin is also the PA announcer for the NY Riptide of the National Lacrosse League, and in that role, he gets to talk the entire game and playfully antagonize the opposing team.  His departing words are to be a good person and be kind to others.  More information on Colin Cosell can be found here, https://colincosell.com/home-plate. Yaffi L'Vova is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who just happens to be Jeff's niece.  Yaffi has an incredible knowledge of food and how live-fire cooking is found in many cultures.  She has created Toddler Test Kitchen as a way to introduce children to unfamiliar foods in a safe way-a way that builds confidence and self-reliance while spending quality time with parents.  She has written many cookbooks, two of which are Fun with Food Toddler Cookbook:  Activities and Recipes to Play and Eat, Kid Chef Junior Every Day:  My First Easy Kids' Cookbook.  Yaffi did not have much of a briefing on what we were going to discuss, and yet she responded to every question with knowledgeable and interesting answers.  It is good to hear from a new voice who may not be a chef or a pitmaster but has a positive way of looking at food.  For more on Yaffi go to https://www.linkedin.com/in/yaffi-lvova-rdn  or you can find more here  https://feedingmykid.com/about-yaffi-lvova-registered-dietitian-nutritionist/ We recommend you go to BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, Magnechef, https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, and Cutting Edge Firewood https://www.cuttingedgefirewood.com/ for high quality firewood and cooking wood. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.
