Vibing Well with Dr. Stacy (A Functional Medicine Approach to Healing)
In today's episode, I discuss how added sugar and refined/processed foods (yes, even organic, dairy-free, and gluten-free processed foods are STILL processed and refined), still unrecognizable to the mitochondria, still void of nutrients that our gut microbime needs (like fiber!), and also causing MORE inflammation and mitochondria dysfucntion which contirbutes to all METABOLIC diseases including:StokeCVD/Heart Disease/AtherosclerosisKidney DiseaseLiver Disease and Failure, NAFLD, CirrhosisDiabetesDementiaExcess Growth/CancerHyperlipedimia/ObesityWhat they all have in common is that they are METABOLIC in nature, meaning you have to begin to look at what is happening in the LIVER and in the CELLS in order to prevent them. There is NO way we can move forward along our healing journey if we are poisoning our cells with sugar, and in the episode, I delve into the HOW and the WHY sugar does things like wreck our metabolism and mitochondria, how it causes the liver to become fat, which sets the scene for chroinc inflammation, insulin resistance, a lack of ATP (energy), and with that, mitochondira dysfunction.I also talk about how our children are targeted in this mess, how we need to understand the limits in which their bodies can metbaolize (as far as sugar goes), how metablic issues manifest in children, and then of course - how we start supporting these thgins in our own homes (starting with what we bring into the house and what we accept as our normal when it comes to fueling our bodies.) In today's episode, I'm talking about why I would choose added sugars over artificial sweeteners. This may come as a shock, but every single day of the week I would choose to put into my body added sugars, rather than artificial sweeteners. Most people see added sugars as calories and are conditioned to think they are bad, while zero sugar, artificial options are supposedly better. We are a living entity. We are not artificial. We require life to sustain our lives. So what is the difference between added sugars and artificial sweeteners? ➡️Healthy Meals Made Easy PDF https://go.drwholeness.com/healthy-meals-made-easy -------- Connect with Dr. Matt online:

What's the difference between sugar and added sugars, and do they affect my body in the same way? This is a great question from a listener that we address today. I think we all know that there's a lot of sugar in the typical North American diet. Many of the foods that we buy from the store have an assortment of added sugars with various names and from different sources. Having too much total sugar can be detrimental to our health and may promote inflammation. It could also damage blood vessels, affect the gut in a negative way, and have ripple effects on most of our body systems and long-term health. In examining different types of sugar, we can ask ourselves, is this sugar ok, or is it the kind I'm supposed to avoid? Is there a difference in the body? How much can I have in a day? So many good questions about sugar. In answering this listener's question, Rob and Sandra cover some basics around carbohydrates, complex and simple sugars, with some information around where sugar is in our typical diet and what foods have 'natural' sugars and which ones have added sugars. How does relatively high sugar affect your health, training, and gains? We're dissecting the sweet debate on how sugar influences body composition and its role in bulking and strength training. With a magnifying glass on the complexities of carbohydrates, from added sugars to whole foods, I'll guide you through the murky waters of muscle building and fat storage. The question we're answering is:"Intuition and general knowledge says it's not the “healthiest” choice to fill your diet with a bunch of chocolate, sugar, and other treats. But, I'd like to understand more about WHY that's the case, especially when I have 320 carbs and almost 3,000 calories allotted to me on weekends. What does that do for my body composition?Given that I'm bulking, strength training, and eating protein at optimal levels, can my carb choice make me fatter or create different results than if I ate mostly whole food or unprocessed carbs? For example, for breakfast lunch and dinner I will generally eat oats, rice, and potatoes, and occasionally wheat hamburger buns. For mid day snacks I will eat fruits or rice cakes. Over Christmas I got a LOT of candy. I generally have ~120g of sugar per day, including 34g of added sugars. I understand it's OK in moderation especially when I'm hitting all the other targets. But, given I hit my carb target every day: how is relatively high sugar intake affecting my training and gains?"Get the answer in today's Weekend Q&A bonus episode.---This is a special Weekend Q&A edition of the Wits & Weights podcast, where we supercharge your Saturdays with an answer to one burning question so YOU can put it into action this weekend. These questions are taken from the weekly #AskPhilip thread in our free Wits & Weights Facebook community. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Robert Lustig, M.D., neuroendocrinologist, professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and a bestselling author on nutrition and metabolic health. We address the “calories in- calories out” (CICO) model of metabolism and weight regulation and how specific macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), fiber and sugar can modify the CICO equation. We cover how different types of sugars, specifically fructose, a sugar found in liquids, taste intensity, and other factors impact insulin levels, liver, kidney, and metabolic health. We also explore how fructose in non-fruit sources can be addictive (acting similarly to drugs of abuse) and how sugar alters brain circuits related to food cravings and satisfaction. We discuss the role of sugar in childhood and adult obesity, gut health and disease and mental health. We also discuss how the food industry uses refined sugars to create pseudo foods and what these do to the brain and body. This episode is replete with actionable information about sugar and metabolism, weight control, brain health and body composition. It ought to be of interest to anyone seeking to understand how specific food choices impact the immediate and long-term health of the brain and body. In this podcast episode, Dr. Brian interviews Dr. David Perlmutter about his new book, "Drop Acid," which focuses on uric acid and how it relates to metabolic health, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and other health issues. The two discuss the importance of understanding the role of uric acid in the body and how it can be managed through diet and lifestyle changes to support overall health. As a neurologist, Dr. Perlmutter became interested in uric acid's impact on the brain and explored this topic in his book.Elevated Uric Acid Can Cause DiseaseElevated uric acid levels in the body can cause several diseases and conditions. Uric acid is a naturally-occurring substance in the body, but when it is present at higher-than-normal levels, it can cause many health problems. Uric acid is most commonly associated with gout, a type of arthritis, but it can also be linked to other conditions such as metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods such as organ meats, sardines, anchovies, and mushrooms. When the body cannot properly process and excrete the excess uric acid, it can build up in the bloodstream and cause problems.Limit Added Sugar ConsumptionIn today's modern world, limiting added sugar consumption is more important than ever. Fructose is a type of sugar found naturally in fruits and vegetables and is also added to many processed foods. Fructose is metabolized differently than other sugars and has been linked to higher uric acid levels in the body. Excess fructose intake has been linked to several metabolic issues, including hypertension, cognitive decline, and obesity.Lower Uric Acid For Better HealthUric acid is a by-product of fructose metabolism, and elevated uric acid levels can lead to serious health problems. High uric acid levels are associated with an increased risk of death from all-cause mortality, cardiovascular death, and stroke. Additionally, it can increase the risk of erectile dysfunction and lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the blood vessels and joints. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce uric acid levels and improve health. The first step is to identify and avoid hidden sources of fructose. This includes reading labels and being aware of the different names for added sugars, such as organic cane syrup. It is also important to limit alcohol consumption, especially beer, as it is rich in purines which can raise uric acid levels.
