I interview theologian Dr. Craig A. Evans, co-author of Can We Trust the Bible on the Historical Jesus?, which is based on a debate Dr. Evans had some years ago with Dr. Bart Ehrman. (My apologies on the sound quality of the interview itself. We experienced technical difficulties.) For more about Craig Evans and his work visit craigaevans.com. Buy a copy of Can We Trust the Bible on the Historical Jesus? here. Listen to my previous conversations with Dr. Bart Erhman in episodes 51 (Jesus, Interrupted), 200 (How Jesus Became God), 244 (Jesus Before the Gospels) and 299 (Heaven and Hell). Plus: President Donald Trump is in the hospital with covid-19, a fitting conclusion to months of neglect, lies and denial. It's looking inevitable that Judge Amy Coney Barrett will be confirmed on the Supreme Court (if not before the election, certainly before the inauguration) to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The Democrats don't have the votes to stop her confirmation, and very little in the way of parliamentary maneuvers that might slow down the process. Legitimate questions still remain about how Judge Barrett's religious beliefs might influence her judicial rulings--but fundamentalists certainly expect it to have an influence; otherwise, why are they so excited about her? Finally, potentially good news for Dave Warnock (interviewed in episode 293 back in January 2020), who is suffering from ALS and originally thought he might have as little as two years to live. His doctors are exploring additional diagnoses and the (admittedly slim) possibility that effective treatments may be available to him. We wish him luck. Theme music courtesy of Body Found. The last hours of Jesus' life are focal points within the Gospels. But are they historical? What about the burial of Jesus? The exchange for Barabbas? Do the criteria of embarrassment help or hinder these narratives? In part 1 of my investigation, I sit down with Dr. Craig A. Evans of Houston Baptist University and begin the dialogue on one of the most significant events in Christian history. Or is it?

The Beauty of the Church in the Old & New Testament a Lecture with David Hoffelmyer and Aaron White - S2 Ep 10 Introduction to this Episode: This lecture session highlights C. S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters and the transitions to the Church in the Old and New Testament. David Hoffelmyer mentions several passages in Bible to support his argument and he points the Westminster Confession of Faith to bring his argument home. He delivers his lecture in a way that all can understand and relate. Dr. Aaron White adds to this lecture by highlighting the early church gatherings featured in the book of Acts. Aaron was featured in season two on his essay, but during this lecture he brings out a question "What about the gathered church in the New Testament in the book of Acts?" Aaron expands his essay and gives a little bit more on the early church gatherings. About the Teaching Elders: Aaron W. White (PhD, Bristol University) is pastor of First Presbyterian Church in South Charleston, Ohio. He and his wife, Sarah, have been married for 13 years and have six kids. Aaron's passion is to combine the responsible and thorough study of God's Word with contextual strategy to see God's people grow into the depth of character and breadth of influence to bring the gospel to their respective settings. Aaron has published one book called The Earliest Perceptions of Jesus in Context (co-edited with Craig A. Evans and David Wenham, Bloomsbury/T&T Clark, 2018), and has two others in preparation; Who Created Christianity? (coedited with Craig A. Evans, Hendrickson), and The Prophets Agree: The Function of the Book of the Twelve in Acts (Brill). Pastor Dave is excited to be learning the Christian life together with his family and his church family at Trinity Presbyterian Church here in Sparta. Dave grew up in Northwest Missouri and gradually migrated southeast for college at Mizzou in Columbia. Following his marriage to Christina Brunette, he worked as a teacher and completed seminary studies at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Now, as an ordained pastor, Dave is passionate about Jesus and learning to follow him alongside the people of TPC. When Dave isn't doing “pastor stuff” he likes to play guitar and sing with his wife Christina, read good fiction or history, go for a run, or play with his kids. Highlights to consider: As mentioned, this lecture is filled with bible verses that talk about the church. Extend your personal study and read this verses at your leisure. In this episode, Dr. Craig A. Evans and I discuss the surprising and bold methodological claims about doing history in chapter 4 of Dr. Ehrman's How Jesus Became God. Along the way we bring up such topics as Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, the historicity of the New Testament gospels, the views of David Hume (pictured above) on belief in miracles, the probability of miracles, Paul's religious experiences, writing outside of one's area of expertise, and the usable life of ancient papyri. Here's part of the discussion of Hume in Paley's Evidences of Christianity that I refer to: But the short consideration which, independently of every other, convinces me that there is no solid foundation in Mr. Hume's conclusion, is the following. When a theorem is proposed to a mathematician, the first thing he does with it is to try it upon a simple case, and if it produce a false result, he is sure that there must be some mistake in the demonstration. Now to proceed in this way with what may be called Mr. Hume's theorem. If twelve men, whose probity and good sense I had long known, should seriously and circumstantially relate to me an account of a miracle wrought before their eyes, and in which it was impossible that they should be deceived: if the governor of the country, hearing a rumour of this account, should call these men into his presence, and offer them a short proposal, either to confess the imposture, or submit to be tied up to a gibbet; if they should refuse with one voice to acknowledge that there existed any falsehood or imposture in the case: if this threat were communicated to them separately, yet with no different effect; if it was at last executed; if I myself saw them, one after another, consenting to be racked, burnt, or strangled, rather than live up the truth of their account;--still if Mr. Hume's rule be my guide, I am not to believe them. Now I undertake to say that there exists not a sceptic in the world who would not believe them, or who would defend such incredulity. Instances of spurious miracles supported by strong apparent testimony undoubtedly demand examination; Mr. Hume has endeavoured to fortify his argument by some examples of this kind. I hope in a proper place to show that none of them reach the strength or circumstances of the Christian evidence. In these, however, consists the weight of his objection; in the principle itself, I am persuaded, there is none. This episode is also available on youtube. Links: Paley's Evidences of Christianity. In How Jesus Became God, Dr. Bart Ehrman argues that we should doubt the New Testament reports that Jesus was buried in a tomb, and that this tomb was found empty on the third day after Jesus' crucifixion. (Dr. Ehrman and I discussed this briefly in episode 35.) In this episode, I discuss Ehrman's arguments on this with Dr. Craig Evans, who wrote a chapter about these arguments in the response book How God Became Jesus. Dr. Evans brings to bear some fascinating historical and archaeological evidence. Comparing the two, it seems to me that Dr. Evans has the stronger case. Do you agree? Why or why not? Today's interview is with Biblical scholar Professor Craig Evans. He talks about his background and how he got into this area of scholarship (Jesus, the Gospels and Biblical manuscripts), what impresses him most about the Bible, handling manuscripts, the quest for the historical Jesus (and its overall timeline), the scholarly opinion on the "Jesus never existed" claim, the consensus of scholarship (and why scholarship is important), the contemporary distortion of Jesus, the demonstrable flaws in the thinking of particular scholars, evaluating presuppositions, a case for the reliability of the Gospels, the contrasting view of the "other" gospels, how to investigate the miracle claims within the Gospels, responding to the "failed apocalyptic prophet" objection, the faults in Bart Ehrman's reasoning, advice for those taking their Biblical studies seriously, the do's and don'ts of arguing for Bible reliability, and more. Enjoy.
