On this episode Shane discusses a number of scenes from the book of Exodus and shows how they point to Christ and his ultimate redemptive mission. Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the bread of life, the living water, the light of the world, and the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.SHOW NOTESArticlesFinding Christ in All of Scripture, Shane RosenthalNew Life in the New Year: The Story of Exodus, Shane RosenthalPassover, The Last Supper & The Day of Crucifixion, Shane RosenthalWhere Was Jesus Crucified?, Shane RosenthalConsidering Alternatives to the Resurrection, Shane RosenthalBart Ehrman on Jesus & The Claim of Resurrection, Shane RosenthalDid Palm Trees Grow in Jerusalem at the Time of Jesus? In 1942, while Nazis were forcing the Jews of Krosno, Poland to move into the local ghetto, they missed at least one: an eight-month-old Jewish infant, left in a ditch by her frantic mother, wrapped only in a blanket, with just a birthdate and false first name pinned to the wool. A passing Polish couple found the child, brought her home and raised her as a Christian. She never knew her real name or identity, despite—she told people years later—always feeling that she was Jewish. It wasn't until 2017 that a band of keen Jewish genealogy researchers, including the late Stanley Diamondof Montreal, managed to crack the mystery and confirm that Maria Vasitinskaya was really Rivka Silber. And despite her parents and two older siblings being murdered in the Holocaust, Diamond was able to reconnect the child survivor, then 78, with her extended family, including approximately 100 relatives in Israel and around the world. In April 2025, this remarkable true story is being published as a new non-fiction book, One in Six Million, by Amy Fish, a Canadian author. Fish joins The CJN Daily to explain how the tale fell into her lap—and how an unexpected genetic twist made telling it literally part of her own DNA. According to Ex. 13:21, as the people of Israel made their way out of Egypt, we're told that Yahweh went before the people of Israel in a pillar of cloud and fire. What's odd, however, is that the next chapter tells us it was the “angel of God” who went before the host of Israel in the pillar (Ex 4:19). So, how do we explain the difference between these two passages? Did an angel lead the people out of Egypt, or was it Yahweh himself? On this episode, Shane discusses these questions and more with Matt Foreman and Doug Van Dorn, authors of The Angel of the Lord: A Biblical, Historical, and Theological Study. For a gift of any amount to help support the work of The Humble Skeptic podcast, we'll send you a 12-page PDF resource titled “Finding Christ in All of Scripture.” Click here for a preview.SHOW NOTESRelated BooksThe Angel of the Lord, Doug Van Dorn & Matt ForemanJesus in the Old Testament, Iain DuguidJourneys with Jesus, Dennis JohnsonEchoes of Exodus: Tracing the Theme of Redemption, Roberts & WilsonJoseph: A Story of Love, Hate, Slavery, Power & Forgiveness, John LennoxThe Surprising Genius of Jesus, Peter J. Christine Darg tackles a profound question that has troubled and fascinated believers for two millennia: Are those who trust in Messiah Jesus for salvation expected to observe the Law's every commandment? This is no trivial question; it's endlessly controversial but there are biblical answers! This video also anticipates a third temple in Jerusalem and reinstituted sacrifices.
As the author of the well-received Bob Dylan: Prophet Mystic Poet, Seth Rogovoy knows his Dylan. So his critical review of the A Complete Unknown, the much hyped new movie featuring Timothee Chamalat as a young Dylan, is worth noting. Rogovoy questions the whole point of the movie, arguing that nobody - neither enthusiasts nor newbies to Dylan - learn anything from A Complete Unknown. And as the music historian Rogovoy - whose latest historical biography is of George Harrison - explains, this cinematic failure to present Bob Dylan in any kind of coherent framework probably reflects our broader contemporary cultural crisis. A Complete Unknown is a blob of a movie for our age of ubiquitous elevator music. Culture is simultaneously all around us and nowhere at all. The timing may just right for a new Dylan. But not for Timothee Chamalat's one dimensional man.Seth Rogovoy is the author of Within You Without You: Listening to George Harrison (Oxford University Press, October 1, 2024), Bob Dylan: Prophet Mystic Poet (Scribner, 2009), and The Essential Klezmer: A Music Lover's Guide to Jewish Roots and Soul Music (Algonquin Books, 2000). Was Mary, the mother of Jesus, truly a virgin? If so, was the virgin birth a literal fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14? Or was this the furthest thing from the mind of the Prophet Isaiah? Dr. Seth Postell, Academic Dean of Israel College of the Bible will be on today's episode to discuss the meaning of this crucial text. Dr. Postell is the Academic Dean of Israel College of the Bible in Israel, an educational ministry of ONE FOR ISRAEL. Dr. Postell completed his PhD in Hebrew Bible under the mentorship of Dr. John Sailhamer. He also studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and did post-graduate studies on literary approaches to the Hebrew Bible under leading Israeli scholars at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan. He has authored or coauthored several books including Adam as Israel (2011), Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus (2017) and essays in The Moody Handbook of Messianic Prophecy (2020), The Handbook of the Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith (2021), Reading the Psalms Theologically (2023). Because of Dr. Postell's interest in inner-biblical interpretation and the New Testament's use of the Tanakh, he is the perfect guest for today's program. In this conversation, Dr. Paul D. Weaver and Dr. Seth Postell discuss the current situation in Israel, the impact of recent conflicts on ministry, and delve into the theological implications of Isaiah 7:14, particularly the interpretation of the Hebrew words 'Alma' and 'Betula'. They explore the significance of these terms in the context of biblical prophecy and the broader implications for understanding the virgin birth of Jesus. In this conversation, Dr. Paul D. Weaver and Seth Postell delve into the interpretation of the term 'Alma' in Isaiah 7:14, discussing its implications for understanding the virgin birth of Jesus. They explore the lexical meaning of 'Alma', the contextual significance of Isaiah's prophecy, and the fulfillment of this prophecy in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospel of Matthew. The discussion also addresses the debate surrounding the concept of double fulfillment in prophetic texts and emphasizes the importance of understanding the original Hebrew context. The conversation concludes with reflections on the significance of these interpretations in the context of celebrating the birth of Jesus as the Messiah.
This Christmas, explore the Jewish roots of Jesus' birth! This weekend on "The Chosen People," Dr. Mitch Glaser and Robert Walter delve into Matthew 1, examining the fascinating Jewish marriage customs of Jesus' time and how they illuminate the Christmas story. This program is a perfect blend of biblical scholarship and holiday inspiration, so do not miss it!
This special Christmas edition of the podcast features Shane's man-on-the-street interviews that he recorded at a local Christmas festival. In particular, he asked whether the holiday, with all its memorable characters, is rooted in mythology, history, or a little of both. In the second half of the program, Shane reads selections from Justin Martyr's First Apology, which provides insight into the compelling nature of early Christian proclamation. Seth Rogovoy's latest book for Oxford University Press is called Within You Without You: Listening to George Harrison (Oxford University Press, 2024). Often, biographies of musicians put the story of the subject's life front and center, letting the music recede into the background. For a musician like George Harrison, this would be a mistake. George, the lead guitarist of the Beatles, sometimes referred to as the “quiet one,” was one of his generation's greatest guitarists. He quietly steered the Fab Four in directions that made them legendary, through his innovative use of sitar or his thoughtful, self-reflective song-writing that contrasted with John's ironic poetics and Paul's cheery symphonies. A late-bloomer of sorts, George truly came into his own as a solo artist pursuing a rock and roll that centered spirituality and existential yearning. Multiple times a year Christians around the globe take part in one of the central rituals of the faith: the Lord's Supper or the Eucharist. This central symbol of unity also serves as a battleground between various traditions within Christianity about the nature and meaning of this ritual. Matt Colvin enters the fray to discuss his book The Lost Supper: Revisiting Passover and the Origins of the Eucharist which unravels the mysteries surrounding the Lord's Supper by connecting this ritual to the Old Testament Passover meal. Specifically, we discuss the coded communication Jesus implements to communicate his Messianic identity to his disciples, the nature of the “fellowship” with Christ experienced in the Supper as described by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians, and the ignorance of first century Judaism by many Christians throughout church history that led to critical misunderstandings of the Eucharist. Matt also describes the “narratival” way in which we participate in the events of the death and resurrection of Christ through the sacraments as well as the relationship between the church and Israel. What did ancient Jews believe about the mission of their Messiah? Were they expecting a kind of warrior king who would defeat the Gentiles and reign as king over all the earth, or one who would atone for sin through his own sacrificial death? On this episode, Shane discusses these questions as he interacts with a variety of texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls and other sources that give us insight into the way Jews before and after the time of Jesus attempted to interpret some of the messianic prophecies recorded in the pages of the Old Testament. To download a PDF copy of the lecture slides for this presentation, use the link below:SHOW NOTESRelated ArticlesSprinkled Nations & Speechless Kings, Shane RosenthalA Dead Sea Scroll Hymn on the Suffering Servant, Shane RosenthalFinding Christ in All The Scriptures, Shane RosenthalProof of the Gospel, Quotes from Eusebius, Augustine & othersWhy Should We Believe The Bible?
