Wanting to pursue higher education is not exactly the same as being ready for higher education and all that its pursuit entails, as too many students learn to their detriment. Amy and Mike invited educator Carey Dukes to explore just how prepared and ready most teens are for college. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Are students typically prepared for both the academic and emotional challenges of college? What critical skills should students develop to enhance their readiness for college life and beyond? Why does approaching college in terms of semesters make sense? Why should student persistence be a priority for colleges? What role do parents and educators play in fostering college readiness among teens? MEET OUR GUEST Carey Dukes brings a unique blend of expertise in business management and academic leadership, honed over three decades in both the corporate and educational sectors. Currently an Assistant Professor of Management at North Greenville University, Carey has a distinguished career that spans from managing large-scale transportation operations to pioneering new approaches in student retention and academic success. With a Doctorate in Business Administration and extensive experience as a CEO in multiple companies, Carey has a deep understanding of business process improvement, change management, and organizational development. His work in the trucking and logistics industry, where he specialized in fixing broken processes and leading innovation, has equipped him with practical insights into managing complex systems and driving efficiency. In academia, Carey's focus has shifted towards addressing one of higher education's most pressing challenges: student retention. Drawing from his own experiences as a first-generation college student, Carey authored a book and developed a model aimed at improving student readiness and retention, particularly in the critical first year of college. In September 2022 a Christian pastor had a meeting with Kim Keon Hee, the first lady of South Korea, in her private residence. That meeting was recorded with a hidden camera and the film was released a year later. What happens in the footage is not entirely clear … except that it appears to show two people - a man and a woman meeting, and one offering an expensive bagged gift to the other. This obscure video triggered a political storm so large that some say it even affected the outcome of the country's parliamentary elections. So what does a designer handbag say about South Korean politics?Contributors: Raphael Rashid, freelance Journalist based in Seoul Sarah Son, Director of the Centre for South Korean Studies at the University of Sheffield Jong Eun Lee, Assistant Professor of Political Science at North Greenville University in South Carolina Andrew Yeo, Senior Fellow and South Korea Foundation Chair at the Brookings InstitutionPresented by Tanya Beckett Produced by Louise Clarke Researched by Matt Toulson Production Coordinator: Tim Fernley Editor: Tara McDermottImage Credit: Philip FongGetty

Political chaos and noisy rhetoric are hard to escape during an election season. So, it's no surprise that even well-meaning Christians get caught up in the fray. Some withdraw from political engagement, feeling as if their voices couldn't possibly be loud enough to make a difference. Others give in to the temptation to vilify those with whom they disagree. Neither is the most constructive way to use whatever measure of influence the Lord has given us to seek the welfare of our earthly home. As Christians, the way for us to engage is with the hope of Jesus Christ. On today's episode, our guests will help us figure out what that looks like on a practical level. You'll hear from Hunter Baker, the provost and dean of the faculty of North Greenville University, and from Shaka Mitchell, the Senior Fellow for the American Federation for Children. You'll also hear from ERLC President Brent Leatherwood.

Are you weary from the current state of American politics? Does the noisy rhetoric by some political candidates and the lack of meaningful action leave you tempted to retreat from political engagement altogether? Know you're not alone. Like you, we feel these tensions and want to explore ways that we can bring hope to the public square, together. And, we believe this starts in our own communities, which is why the ERLC produced an extensive state policy agenda for the first time this year, highlighting areas where you can make a difference in your community. On today's episode, you'll hear from our colleague, Hannah Daniel, the ERLC's director of public policy, about how you can get involved in bringing flourishing to your state and neighborhood. You'll also hear again from our friends Tony Beam, the senior director of Church & Community Engagement for North Greenville University, and Lane Wakefield, a professor at Baylor University and candidate for his local school board in Texas.
2024 is a big year for politics. If you ask any person you pass on the street why this is the case, their answer would likely be because of the presidential election; one that, sadly, looks like it will be a contentious repeat of 2020. And they wouldn't be wrong. Federal politics are important. But, most Americans don't give much thought to political issues beyond the national level. This causes us to miss out on the good we can effect at the state and local levels through political engagement. While it might not be as glamorous, popular, or as exciting as a national election, getting involved in the states, cities, and communities in which we live is more important than we might think. On today's episode you'll hear from Tony Beam, who is the senior director of Church & Community Engagement for North Greenville University in South Carolina. He represents South Carolina Baptists at the Statehouse in Columbia as director of the Office of Public Policy. Dr. Beam is also the host of the podcast, "Truth in Politics and Culture with Dr. Tony Beam." You will also hear from Lane Wakefield who is a clinical assistant professor of Marketing at the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University. He's also a candidate for the school board in his community.

Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was an English Baptist theologian, minister, and missionary. During his life, Fuller combated the ideas of hyper-Calvinism by applying the ideas of Jonathan Edwards. However, today, Fuller is most known for his instrumental role in founding the Baptist Missionary Society. In a recent article published by the Washington Institute, professor and lawyer Eric Treene offered a robust alternative way of understanding Christian Nationalism and its significance within American culture. Depending on who's doing the talking, Christian Nationalism is either the greatest danger to America or our only hope in resisting the onslaught of the progressive movement. But there is a better way. As Treene wrote, the current debate over Christian Nationalism is the most recent chapter of something that is an endemic part of the American story: "[C]an Christians honestly look around and conclude that there is more nationalism melded with their faith than in the past? In 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt distributed a pocket New Testament to soldiers throughout the Armed Services, with the inscription: 'As Commander-in-Chief I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States.'" At the same time, according to Treene, there are reasons to be concerned about Christian Nationalism. "The alarmism about growing Christian Nationalism is vastly overblown among some, and deliberately manipulated for political reasons among others. But there is a “there” there." In the inaugural offering of Breakpoint Forums, the Colson Center hosted two of American Christianity's keenest voices about faith and the public square. Rusty Reno, chief editor of First Things, and Hunter Baker, newly appointed provost of North Greenville University, addressed the issue of Christian Nationalism. Not only do Reno and Baker hail from different Church traditions, but they took somewhat differing postures in the forum on what faithful citizenship looks like in our cultural moment. Dr. Reno's seriousness about where a secular globalist perspective has left us leads him to embrace a “soft” Christian Nationalism, though he objects to the positions of some of its most outspoken advocates. As he put it, "I would vastly prefer a Christian America to a secular America. … I think it's as simple as that. You have to ask yourself, what would you prefer, a Christian America or a secular America? I'd prefer a Christian America, and in that sense, Christian nationalism." Dr. Baker, on the other hand, argued against using the title Christian Nationalism while affirming the largely Christian influence on our nation throughout its history. He insisted that the nation and the Church are better off without any kind of formal link, while the nation is helped by the intentional influence of the church. "It's like George Washington and the Bible. These are the bulwarks of the United States in that period. But … for most of our history, it's not the case that the United States government is sort of the official partner of the Christian faith, nor is it seeking to officially establish the Christian faith or Christian institutions." Their differences were illuminating, especially given their shared priority of Christian faith, grounded in Christian truth as revealed in Holy Scripture. Each warned against the danger posed by our increasingly intolerant, secular, and progressive gatekeepers who sit atop the cultural, academic, and political power structures of our society. And both Reno and Baker affirmed the basic responsibility believers have to bring their convictions to the ballot box. The conversation was helpful and enlightening. While combatants on the extreme ends of the debate insist that it's their way or the highway, Christians must seek an increasing Christian influence without falling for the dangers C.S. Lewis warned us against in God in the Dock when he said, “By the mere act of calling itself the Christian Party it implicitly accuses all Christians who do not join it of apostasy and betrayal.” We can do better than that. You can watch the recording of the Breakpoint Forum on Christian Nationalism on YouTube. Working to see a nation become more Christian doesn't make one a Christian Nationalist in the breathlessly alarmed sense we hear about so often. Our goal is faithfulness. We can long for and we can work for Christian renewal in our time without, as Chuck Colson often warned against, looking for our salvation to arrive on Air Force One. This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Timothy Padgett. I'm so excited to introduce you to this week's guest, Ruth McWhite. You'll just love Ruth, as do many people in our community. She was recently honored by the South Carolina Baptist Convention last month during Women's History Month, as a woman who is making a difference, and I couldn't agree more. She has blessed so many in her life through her teaching, speaking and mentoring to women. She recently retired from North Greenville University as the Director of Womens Ministry and now serves as a Biblical counselor at Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C. I asked Ruth to come on the podcast to share about her passion, mentoring younger women, and to share about those who mentored her and made a real difference in her life. She also tells how you can make a difference in the lives of others, too. It's not hard, and it shouldn't be scary, and Ruth shares practical ways we can pour into the lives of others. Once you hear our conversation, you'll feel like Ruth is your best friend. And if you don't already know her, you'll want to. Enjoy our conversation!
Socrates described himself as the "gadfly" of Athens, someone who continually bothered Athenian citizens with his incessant questioning. Socrates' goal with these questions was to spur people onto greater understanding and self-reflection--and this is ultimately the goal of the teacher imitating Socrates in the classroom through Socratic questioning. In this episode, Isaac Jennings and Winston Brady talk through the idea of Socratic questioning, as well as ways of inserting such questions into your lessons and thinking of such questions on the fly. Isaac Jennings teaches logic and philosophy at Thales Academy Apex. Mr. Jennings earned a B.A. from North Greenville University, a M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a M.A. in Philosophy of Religion from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Jennings teaches Trivium.

The long awaited final chapter of the Liberty University scandal is here. Jacob is back for the last installment of the series, where we talk about growing up devout Christians, being told as literal children that we need to be willing to die for our faith, and an overwhelming feeling of guilt that seems to always transcend the whole point of the Gospel. We also get vulnerable about the church's views on being LGBTQ, and all the religious trauma that comes along with it. We finally hear about the North Greenville University scandal, we talk about where Liberty University is currently standing in the wake of this mess, and share all our final thoughts. This conclusion episode is almost two hours long, and also the first time I've ever cried on a podcast. Probably won't be the last.
