A recent study by the U.N. children's agency UNICEF found that more than 500 million children in East Asia and Pacific countries breathe unhealthy air. The pollution is linked to the deaths of 100 children under age 5 every day. June Kunugi, UNICEF's Regional Director for East Asia, said the polluted air limits growth, harms lungs and affects thinking abilities. “Every breath matters, but for too many children every breath can bring harm,” she said.她说:“每一次呼吸都很重要,但是对于太多的孩子来说,每个呼吸都会造成伤害。”Over 6,000 cities in 117 countries now record and follow air quality levels. Many mobile apps include air quality information as well. But it can be difficult to know how bad the air is by looking at these numbers.现在,117个国家 /地区有6,000多个城市记录并遵循空气质量水平。 许多移动应用程序还包括空气质量信息。 但是,通过查看这些数字,很难知道空气有多糟。To help people better understand air quality levels, many countries have established an air quality index, or AQI. Larger numbers on this index mean worse air.为了帮助人们更好地了解空气质量水平,许多国家已经建立了空气质量指数或AQI。 该指数上的数量较大,意味着空气较差。Different countries have different air quality standards. For example, India's daily PM 2.5 limit is more than 1.5 times higher than in Thailand and 4 times higher than WHO standards.不同国家的空气质量标准不同。 例如,印度的每日PM 2.5限制比泰国高1.5倍,比WHON标准高4倍。For individuals, experts say the goal should be to limit exposure when air quality is bad, by staying indoors or wearing a mask. This is not always possible, though. Danny Djarum is with the World Resources Institute. He told the AP there are many people who live or work outside and “can't really afford” to stay indoors. People also need to watch indoor air pollution that can be caused by common household activities like cooking or burning incense.人们还需要观看室内空气污染,这可能是由烹饪或燃烧香(例如烹饪或燃烧香)引起的。While air purifiers can help reduce indoor air pollution, experts say they do have limitations. The devices work by pulling air from a room and then pushing it through a filter that traps pollutants. The filtered air is then sent back into the room.虽然空气净化器可以帮助减少室内空气污染,但专家说它们确实有局限性。 设备通过从房间拉出空气,然后通过捕获污染物的过滤器将其推送出来。 然后将过滤的空气发送回房间。Air purifiers work best when used in small spaces and when people are nearby. This is because they can only clean a certain amount of air, said Rajasekhar Balasubramanian of the National University of Singapore. He added, “If we have a tiny air purifier in a large room, it won't be effective.”

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar rejected 18 notices for a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani bribery charges and other matters. As protests escalated, MPs began shouting slogans, leading to the adjournment. Meanwhile, a parliamentary committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will meet today to review suggestions, but Opposition members are asking for more time to finish their work.Adani Group's ClarificationAdani Green Energy (AGEL) clarified that neither Chairman Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, nor Managing Director Vneet Jaain have been charged under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The statement comes after reports suggested charges against the trio. Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi also confirmed that neither Gautam nor Sagar Adani face charges in the serious counts of the US prosecutors' five-count indictment. AGEL's clarification aims to clear any confusion about the involvement of its top executives in alleged violations.Delhi Air Quality UpdateDelhi's air quality remains in the “very poor” category with an AQI of 301, improving slightly from Monday's 392. Areas like Mundka and Bawana recorded the worst levels. Due to the pollution, schools in Delhi switched to a hybrid model with both in-person and online classes, as mandated by the Supreme Court. The temperature dipped to 11.6°C, and visibility at the airport was reduced to 1,600 meters. Authorities have forecast a mainly clear day ahead, though pollution concerns persist.Lebanon-Israel CeasefireA ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon took effect, following an agreement brokered by the US and France. Hamas expressed support for Lebanon's efforts to protect its people and hopes for a broader deal to end the Gaza war. While international peace efforts remain stalled, Lebanon's military is preparing to deploy in the south to help maintain the ceasefire, urging residents near the border to stay away until the Israeli military retreats. This marks a tentative step toward reducing tensions in the region.Pakistan Protest UpdatePakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former PM Imran Khan's wife Bushra Bibi, called off a planned sit-in protest in Islamabad. The decision came after violent clashes between security forces and protesters. The PTI had attempted to march towards the D-Chowk, but security forces used tear gas to disperse them. PTI leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Ali Amin Gandapur, urged protesters to return home, citing a temporary pause in the movement. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

His death follows the 2021 arrest of another top leader, B.G. Krishnamurthy. With Gowda's death, the remaining underground Naxals in Karnataka come down to just seven, including four women.Delhi's air quality hit alarming levels early Tuesday, with an AQI of 492, placing the capital in the "severe-plus" category. Certain areas, including Alipur and Anand Vihar, surpassed the 500 mark. This means Delhi residents are breathing in pollutants equivalent to 50 cigarettes a day, posing serious health risks to everyone, not just those with pre-existing conditions. The government has implemented its highest emergency measures, and the Supreme Court has ordered these actions to remain in place until further notice. Additionally, Delhi's Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced a 50% work-from-home policy for both private and government offices due to severe air pollution. As polling concluded in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, urban voter ahpathy remained a challenge for the Election Commission, which frequently ran campaigns to encourage people to come out in large numbers and vote. Despite being the state's largest city and the country's financial and entertainment hub, Mumbai recorded the lowest vote turnout at 51.27 per cent, just 1 per cent higher than 48.4 per cent turnout in 2019. Meanwhile, Gadchiroli saw the highest turnout at 69.63 per cent. In Jharkhand, Jamtara recorded the highest turnout at 76.16 per cent, while Bo-ka-ro had the lowest at 60.97 per cent. After casting his vote in Thane, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his confidence in securing a thumping victory in the ongoing Assembly polls. The charges allege the group bribed Indian officials to secure power contracts in India. Alongside the indictment, the US SEC is seeking penalties and a jury trial for Adani and his associates, citing their operations in the US and impact on American investors. The political war over the Adani bribery case heats up as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accuses the Indian government of supporting Gautam Adani, who was indicted in the US for allegedly offering over $200 million in bribes. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra hit back, accusing Congress of destabilizing Indian markets with false propaganda. He questioned why Congress-ruled states had welcomed Adani's investments despite the controversy. On the global front, Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from its southern Astrakhan region in an attack against Ukraine. Kyiv's air force said this is the first time since the war broke out that Russia has used a long-range missile. The seats are in the tribal-dominated South Chotanagpur, northern Pala-mu, and Kolhan regions, with 20 reserved for Scheduled Tribes and six for Scheduled Castes. While the BJP has offered 25 promises as part of its Sankalp Patra, the INDIA bloc has underlined seven “guarantees” in the fields of education, domicile policy, social justice, food, Maiyya Samman Yojna, jobs, and farmers' welfare, replicating its model in Karnataka and Telangana. Over 2 lakh new beneficiaries above the age of 70 received cards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana within the first week of Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolling out the expanded version of the flagship health insurance scheme to cover all elderly. According to data available till 7th of November with the National Health Authority, Kerala has registered the highest number of new beneficiaries under the extended version, with nearly 89,000 cards issued for the elderly. The data also shows that 32,000 additional beneficiaries above the age of 70 have re-registered to avail the cover of Rs 5 lakh provided in the extended version with no income limit. In response to escalating violence in Manipur, the central government has deployed 20 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces to the state. The forces, comprising around 2,000 personnel from CRPF and BSF, will be stationed until 30th of November to maintain order. This follows recent clashes, including the killing of suspected militants in Jiribam and the continued disappearance of six individuals from the May-tee community, including three children, after the violence on Monday.Delhi's air quality reached hazardous levels, with an AQI of 423, prompting serious disruptions at the Indira Gandhi Airport. 151 flights were delayed, and 282 departures faced delays averaging 45 minutes. Environment Minister Gopal Rai called for stricter enforcement of GRAP II measures to combat pollution. He noted an expected improvement in air quality due to rising wind speeds, as the capital continues to struggle with pollution-related issues affecting public health and daily operations. On the global front, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed at least six people, including three young siblings, as the conflict in the region intensifies. In Lebanon, an Israeli strike on an apartment building near Beirut killed six and injured 15. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 14th of November and here are the headlines. At a rally in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted Congress, accusing some of viewing the killer of Sambhaji Maharaj as a messiah. He questioned if such individuals were against Maharashtra's pride and identity. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi responded, mocking BJP claims about his “red book” with blank pages. Gandhi defended his use of the book, while BJP's Devendra Fadnavis alleged it was a tactic to gain support from urban Naxals and anarchists.Delhi's air quality reached hazardous levels, with an AQI of 423 at 11 am, prompting serious disruptions at Indira Gandhi Airport. 151 flights were delayed, and 282 departures faced delays averaging 45 minutes. Meena, who contested the Deoli-Uniara bypolls as an Independent, was filmed allegedly slapping the local SDM during voting. Meena's actions sparked protests, and his arrest followed a night of tensions in Tonk district. The Argentinian delegation has withdrawn from COP29, reportedly on the orders of President Javier Milei. The move, just days into the conference, raised concerns about Argentina's stance on climate action, especially given Milei's ties with US President-elect Donald Trump. Speculation about Argentina's potential exit from the Paris Agreement intensified, although no official confirmation was made. The decision marks a significant shift in the country's international climate policy as Milei consolidates power since taking office in November.Sri Lankans are voting in a crucial parliamentary election, pivotal for President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's government. Dissanayake's September presidential win, marking a rejection of traditional parties, has fueled hopes for economic recovery. However, his failure to secure over 50% of the vote has raised doubts about his party's future success in the election. As the Marxist-leaning president seeks to solidify power, the results will determine his ability to implement economic reforms and navigate the island nation's political landscape. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Interpreting India

With the onset of winter, severe levels of air pollution have reemerged as a concern in North India. Various factors have been put forth to explain this malaise: stubble burning in farms, vehicular pollution, and pollution due to the construction sector. But even outside of the winter months, the National Capital Region maintains poor air quality, with an AQI of over 200. Can clean transportation help?To speak of clean transportation, which is key to addressing the issue of vehicular pollution, we must first speak of electric passenger and commercial vehicles, low-emission zones, and so on. Each option comes with its own set of challenges. Electric vehicle uptake is low in India and hovers at around 2 percent owing to relatively higher prices, range anxiety, lengthy charging times, a lack of standardized charging points, and a lack of charging infrastructure. However, there are concerted efforts to promote electric vehicles and alternative forms of cleaner transportation in India. The auto PLI scheme and Delhi's electric vehicle (EV) policy provide incentives that can potentially spur the uptake of electric vehicles. Delhi's EV policy also addresses the issue of scarce charging infrastructure. This appears to have had results since Delhi's electric vehicle sales rose to 9 percent in the September–November quarter of 2021 from around 1 percent in 2019–2020. Nor is price as much of a deterrent as it may initially appear, since initial high costs may be offset by long-term gains from heavy usage, such as low fuel and running and maintenance costs. In this episode of Interpreting India, Amit Bhatt joins Sayoudh Roy to discuss these key questions around clean transportation.Episode ContributorsAmit Bhatt is the India managing director at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). He is based in New Delhi and has over twenty years of experience in transportation, urban development, and management. Before joining ICCT, Amit was executive director for integrated transport at WRI India for twelve years. Prior to this, he worked with the Urban Mass Transit Company, India's leading urban transport consultancy, and with infrastructure leasing and financial services. Sayoudh Roy is a senior research analyst with the Political Economy Program at Carnegie India. His work focuses on the macroeconomic implications of frictions in labor and financial markets and how interactions between them can affect macroeconomic aggregates.Additional ReadingsIndia's Path to Clean Transport is Electric, Strong Central Policies on Zero-Emission Vehicles by Amit Bhatt and Harsimran KaurWhere Are India's Electric Trucks? by Amit Bhatt and Aviral YadavBattery Swapping for Electric Two-Wheelers in India: Strategy Hinterlands, by Pramoda Gode, Sumati Kohli, and Jennifer Callahan How Delhi Is Becoming a Lighthouse City for Electric Mobility in India by Amit BhattImproving Air Quality in Cities Through Transport-Focused Low- and Zero-Emission Zones: Legal Pathways and Opportunities for India by Anuj Dhole, Sandra Wappelhorst, and Amit Bhatt

Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) Israeli troops gather around Gaza City, kill several Palestinians in occupied West Bank Israeli ground troops encircled Gaza City in their invasion of Gaza, as top US diplomat Antony Blinken arrived in Israel. The Israeli army announced that four more Israeli soldiers had been killed in overnight fierce fighting in Gaza with Palestinian fighters. And in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian medical sources said eight Palestinians were killed in separate incidents overnight. *) EU prevention of pro-Palestine rallies shows double standard The prevention of pro-Palestinian rallies in some European Union countries constitutes a "double standard," Türkiye's foreign minister has said at a meeting organised by the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin. Minister Hakan Fidan was quoted as saying "Those who allow attacks on our Holy Book, the Quran, under the guise of freedom of expression are blocking those who want to protest the brutal killing of civilians in Palestine." He added that it “is an unacceptable double standard." *) Tunisia postpones vote on law criminalising relations with Israel Tunisia's parliament postponed voting on a draft law that would criminalise the normalisation of relations with Israel. The decision was made during an evening session of the legislative assembly, according to Parliament Speaker Ibrahim Bouderbela. Parliament started discussions over the proposed law in August. *) MSF: Greece 'normalised' illegal pushbacks of asylum seekers Doctors Without Borders accused Kyriakos Mitsotakis' government, stating that Greece has "normalised" abusive pushbacks of asylum seekers within a broader European Union policy that disregards violence against vulnerable individuals in a statement. The organisation also said in a report that MSF teams have borne witness to how normalised pushbacks have become, and to the stark absence of protection for people who seek safety in Greece. *) Air pollution in India's New Delhi turns 'severe' People in New Delhi woke up to a thick layer of toxic haze, and some schools were ordered to be shut for two days as the air quality index entered the "severe" category in several parts of the Indian capital. Residents complained of irritation in the eyes and itchy throats with the air turning a dense grey as the AQI hovered around 480 in some monitoring stations in the city. *) Egypt's Bassem Youssef slams Gaza deportation plan An Egyptian heart surgeon turned comedian has criticised a leaked proposal by Israel to forcibly deport Palestinians from the besieged Gaza to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, asking why Europe, which has 44 countries, or 50 states of US "take the Israelis" to end the Middle East's protracted conflict. Bassem Youssef said the Israeli proposal of forcible transfer of some 2.3 million Palestinians of Gaza to Sinai was "the worst possible solution", in an interview with British TV host Piers Morgan.

We received an email from long time listener Mike LaBorde with a link to an article at TV Tech titled The `Quiet Quitters' of Pay TV Continue to Grow. Mike suggests that he is one and as I thought about my situation I decided I am one as well. So what is a Quiet Quitter and are you one of us? A Quiet Quitter is someone who has largely stopped viewing pay TV programming but hasn't dropped their pay TV subscription or “cut-the-cord.”  According to Inscape's recent Q2 2023 TV Market Trends report, about 5% of U.S. cable/satellite households have outright quit viewing content via their satellite and cable TV options in the second quarter of the year. Inscape found that 9% reduced their cable/satellite viewing by 75% or more from Q2 2022 to Q2 2023 (to account for viewing seasonality), but didn't fully quit. Additionally, 8.4% of U.S. cable/satellite households had a drop of 50-75% in cable/satellite viewing time in Q2 2023 from Q2 2022. I did some analysis on my own viewing habits and here are the numbers. Back in 2000 I spent one hour in the morning watching TV, mostly news, and four hours in the evening from 6:00 - 10:00 Monday through Friday. That is a total of five hours a day. I now listen to podcasts as I get ready in the morning which by itself reduces my pay TV usage by 20%. In the evening I watch Youtube for about 30 minutes and then I may turn to linear television for about 30 minutes to an hour while I wait for the family to assemble and watch TV. At this point I've already cut 1 ½ hours of my normal viewing. Once we've settled in to watch TV for the evening it's not from the live TV or the DVR but rather from Hulu, Peacock, Paramount, Max, or Netflix. On a non-sports evening I have cut my linear TV by as much as 90%. So why do I keep my subscription? It's those pesky sports teams that I follow. It's no fun watching delayed. You have to watch them live. The Dodgers, Kings, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and to a lesser degree Tennessee Volunteers keep me paying for DirecTV Stream. We also will record Hallmark Christmas movies and watch them during the holiday season. I count DVR's programming a pay TV. You really have to ask yourself, is it worth it to pay $90 a month just to watch 25% of what you used to on a pay TV service. Unfortunately being a big sports fan has it's costs! According to Inscape data, while streaming commands 56.5% of overall TV viewing time, that falls to 23.1% for sports and 14.7% for news. Cable/satellite/antenna, meanwhile, accounts for 43.5% of overall TV viewing time, but dominates in sports (76.9%) and news (85.3%). Alternatively I can find a way to get my sporting fix through add-on services like “At Bat” for baseball and “Sunday Ticket” for Football but when you add everything up it more or less costs the same amount as having a pay TV service. So you may as well just pay for pay TV on the odd chance you have nothing to watch and all you have is Nick at Nite or TV Land!

Kicking off Season Four with a great episode! As the parent of three kids and a lung doctor, I always wonder how best to balance exercise benefits when air quality is marginal. Fortunately, there are experts hard at work on understanding how we should approach this topic. Dr. Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir is chief of the pediatric pulmonary division at Columbia University and cares for patients and conducts research in the Department of Pediatrics and the Dept Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Her multidisciplinary, award-winning, and collaborative research is focused on understanding how environmental factors impact children with asthma, particularly in urban and minority communities.  She recently served on the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act Scientific Advisory Committee as a member of the particulate matter panel in 2021. On the podcast today, we discuss her research that put pollution monitors on children, and followed them. It turns out they are significantly exposed to pollution during school hours, so it is very important for schools to build clean indoor air infrastructure and to be aware of available resources, such as the EPA Air Quality flag program. To Do: 1- Download the Airnow.gov app if you haven't yet- familiarize yourself with the Air Quality Index and who is at risk.  2- Find out whether your school follows a flag program- if not, consider discussing with your school starting a flag program. You can obtain resources and information at airnow.gov/air-quality-flag-program.  3- The EPA offers significant educational materials geared for kids as well, you can find out more about those resources at Airnow.gov, including videos in Spanish and English about air quality.  4- Our climate is changing and leading to increased wildfire smoke events. Do what you can in your community to address climate change and help mitigation plans, such as plans for clean indoor air.  5- Learn more about the AQI from Dr. Rosser in the episode “What's in an Index?” and about PM2.5 from “What's in a Standard” episode with Dr. Costa. These are both available in Season Two of the podcast. Learn more about ozone, the other component of the AQI from the “Money & Lives” episode from last season.  6- Consider a donation to the American Lung Association, who in addition to supporting those with lung disease, is constantly fighting for clean air for all.  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit blog post for more information, or go to airhealthourhealth.org. As we record on arraignment eve, the crew brings some news for your consideration from the last week. Don't miss our Breaking News coverage of the indictment being unsealed -- activate a free Patreon trial today! Did Sarah Stusek bring a GoodReads review bombing and lost publishing deal on herself after she called a reviewer a bitch? Does current social media culture putting reviews front and center for creators inspire this kind of bad behavior? Tbh, we don't think a 4 star rating is something to lose your shit over. The eastern US received a lesson in how to live with wildfire smoke blanketing the region, and Californians gave a collective side-eye. It's a whole new world for Laura, who'd never had to contend with toxic wildfire smoke. Pam and Andrew give their tips for monitoring the AQI (air quality index) and taking safety precautions. Epic fail y'all: Netflix is reporting record signups in the wake of its crackdown on password sharing, meaning many of us didn't cancel our subscriptions. The data they're reporting on is questionable though... watch this space. This week's recommendations will make you feel smarter: 'Happy-Go-Lucky' by David Sedaris (Laura), 'Burn It Down' by Maureen Ryan (Pam), and 'Jury Duty' on Amazon Prime / Freevee (Andrew). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon and Apple Podcasts: It's another MuggleSuck - this time, Andrew reflects on an interaction with appreciation, but Pam and Laura are still giving bombastic side-eye. Laura brings an example of promises made, promised back pedaled. And a listener from the early days accuses one of us of taking a bong rip on air. We launch a formal indictment and investigation to identify the perpetrator. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
