Todays show features Dave Jackson, one of the original podcasters who was there at the very beginning. He is still at it today and turning out great content with his "School of Podcasting" podcast. Quotes from Dave “James Cridland is a good source for me, kind of keeping up with what's going on. He does a show called Pod News and then he does a pod news weekly review where he kind of does a deep dive into all the stories, from the week” "AI will make a bunch of stuff for me and. You've been there, done that. Not that that's bad, but I'm like, how many of these do we need, you know?" FULL BIO Dave Jackson began podcasting in 2005 and launched the School of Podcasting (schoolofpodcasting.com). His School of Podcasting show has over 3.1 million downloads. He has helped hundreds of people plan, launch, and grow their podcasts. He is the author of the book Profit from Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood, and is a featured speaker at events. In 2016 Dave joined Libsyn (the largest podcast hosting company) as part of their tech support team. In 2018 he was inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. I looked for a new podcast and never really found what I wanted (a daily motivation podcast of 5 minutes or less). What I did find as I search floored me in some cases. I thought, "Are people still doing/saying that?" I did some research on some subjects and found out some things as well. Ready To Start Podcasting? Use the coupon code schoolofpodcasting.com/listener to save 20% Podcasting Is "Too Crowded," and Someone Is Already Doing a Podcast Like Yours When you look at Podcastindex.org, you will see (today) 4,088,299 and only 253,396 have produced an episode in the last ten days (6%) and that only goes up to 13% if you include the 523,942 shows that produced an episode in the last 90 days. Time and time again, I found a podcast that I thought would fit my criteria, but they either had 2 episodes (and quit) or had many episodes but quit in 2021. So if you see a large number of podcasts in the genre you are looking to be in when you launch, it may not be as crowded as you think. Many of the dead shows are from Spotify for Podcasters users (formerly Anchor) who "tried podcasting" and then quit (and being a free service, the files have not been removed). Horrible Episode Titles This would be a horrible example of an episode title for the episode: Episode 878 Dave Jackson School of Podcasting If you must use episode numbers, I recommend putting them at the end of the name. When I look at Tim Ferris' show, he has extremely long episode titles, and when you first look at his show (where you can see all the episode titles), they seem to get cut off after 167 words. I've heard other people recommend 60-80 characters for your title, and that goes against Unhelpful Artwork I see people who put a microphone on artwork about mental health. This would be like putting a camera on every movie poster. It's not needed, as is the word "Podcast" in your title. Does your artwork help people know what your show is about before they hear it? Rating and Reviews Nonsense From Apple's website: Although ratings, reviews, and shares also help indicate a podcast's newness, popularity, and quality, they are not factored into the algorithm that determines the rankings for Top Shows and Top Episodes. In other words, they may not help people find a podcast on their own, but they influence whether people will listen or follow, and those factors influence the charts. -source Poor Descriptions Again from Apple: Your description should tell listeners what kind of content you talk about and explain how people can benefit from listening. If you need a little help, think about how you can convey the problem you're trying to solve in a way that convinces listeners they should care. -source Guests With Really Bad Audio I get it when it's an A-list guest, but with anybody else, you need to keep in mind it is YOUR show and YOUR brand that takes the hit. Author and Podcaster since 2005, Dave Jackson shares how to effectively launch a podcast, grow an audience, bring value to your audience and grow your business at the same time. The 1st step is starting a podcast in an area where you have passion. The next step is determining your niche. Once you do those two things, be OK launching your podcast and realizing that you can’t please everyone. Be consistent with your content and make sure it adds value to your audience. Ep.21 - Salvaging Your Podcast with Dave Jackson Tim and Kyle talk with Hall-of-Fame Podcaster Dave Jackson (School of Podcasting) about strategies that can salvage your show when you put a bad podcast episode into the world. Episode at a Glance: Strategies for surviving that "Big Oops" after you hit publish on an episode. What happens when you overwrite versus repost your fixed episode. Learn the tacit knowledge that only comes from a podcaster who has thousands of episodes and millions of minutes on the microphone. Where to find Dave Jackson: School of Podcasting Power of Podcasting Podcast Rodeo Show Ask the Podcast Coach Binky and the Wiz (Coming Some Day!) What did we learn? There are a lot of ways to help you mitigate the damage of those mistakes. You CAN recover from a bad episode. Publishing an episode that did not include your voice. Publishing an episode that only plays one of two voices on the recording. Interviews - Didn't hit record. Interviewee that fell asleep. Cut and Paste from an old episode and publish the wrong one. Don't listen with the ears of a podcaster but with the ears of a listener. You can go overkill on recording gear. You can go overkill on the number of audio file version saves. Hoarding audio files for "just in case" is a real thing that all podcasters do. The bare minimum for podcasting gear should be enough for a new podcaster to "get by" -- this means settling for a $60 microphone instead of going out and buying the AKG C-24 that was used in Pitch Perfect 3. (Pro Tip: The AKG C-24 is a collectors microphone for the low low price of $9K). Some gear is just weird (with 10-feet of cable) and we just have to live with it. Be careful when you name your podcast the same as a podwrecked podcast. Subscribe to your show with Apple Podcasts/Overcast (on iPhone), and Pocket Casts/Castbox (on Android) to know when your episode goes live. Google Play Music is NOT Google Podcasts - they are two separate things! Not many people will want you to remove content from an interview (or remove a snippet). Always ask in an interview "Is there anything in this interview you don't want out in the world?" A single episode marked "Explicit" will drop you out of a lot of other countries unless you're not interested in having an audience in those countries. When it comes to audio obsessions, remember that some folks in your audience are listening in the shower. Questions to ask yourself if you Podwreck: How long has the episode been out to the world? How many people already have this episode? Do I want everyone to get the corrected episode? Do I care enough to put a re-post in my feed? How long do you want to wait for Apple Podcasts to update from my change? Did anyone even notice there was a problem? Hall-of-Fame Dave-isms: "Please subscribe to your own podcast!" "Remember, the Internet writes in ink!" "Nobody cares how the sausage is made. Just bring me content!" "As podcasters, there is a big chunk of our hearts that wants to serve [our audience]." "Please do not start your show off with an apology. Do it at the end where your super fans are!" Elegant Solutions Notes: If you don't care about Spotify and Google Play Music, you can repost with the exact named file. Everyone who already downloaded it now as the "collectors edition" of that episode. You can repost the audio file with the same name and just not worry about those who already have it. You can post a NEW audio file and not worry about your subscribers getting a second version of the first file. Apple Podcasts will show the new post but not remove the old one because it is only a mirror to your own feed. It may take up to 24-hours to show any changes in the Apple Listing because it is only a snapshot of what is going on with your podcast in 24-hours (not minute-by-minute). Apple Podcasts may never remove the listing of the first listing of your changed episode. Industry Predictions: Kyle thinks that Dave will one day soon create a podcast devoted to his Crazy Morning Zoo Crew Binky and the Wiz! This is a group of characters Dave introduced on episode #400 of the School of Podcasting and then resurfaced again on SOP episode #600. As a podcast consultant, I like to try all sorts of technology to stay informed with what is going in the space. Today I'm going to talk about things to keep in mind when you move, how to move, and why or why not you should move. I also have a resource if you're moving your entire website without learning any code. First the disclosure. I was a customer of Libsyn.com for 10 years before becoming an employee almost two years ago. So when I talk about Libsyn competition, I do my best to keep my Libsyn employee hat off, and keep the Dave Jackson School of Podcasting hat on. I also have taken extra effort to base my comments on what happens. Now what I think should happen. I will be sure to tell you when something is an opinion and when something is a fact (as I know it). Here are my Updated Criteria for Podcast Media Hosting Don't mess with my file name* Don't mess with my file format (bit rate, ID3 tags) Give me the ability to have an unlimited back catalog (unlimited storage) Don't limit my audience size (unlimited bandwidth) Don't control my feed, and make it easy to leave if I choose to do so. I need to be able to put in a 301 redirect. Give me support. Preferably within 24 hours. Charge me for your service so you can stay in business Give me stats so I can see what's working. It would be nice if they were accurate. Support the iTunes Serial, Episodic, Season, and Episode Numbers Be IAB Compliant (please note as of 1/2017 certification is not in place, when it is, I want me Podcast Media Host Certified) *Some media hosts offer to inject your mp3 file with an advertisement and in those instances, they get a pass on this criteria. After a break, we are finally opening up the second semester of the Creative Studio Academy! I will be talking about the platform for your website and some of the basic settings that are often overlooked. Before that, though... At the end of last semester, I hinted at some of the changes that would be coming. If you are new to the Academy, please go back and check out the first semester sessions. From the things I mentioned before, here is what we are looking at moving forward: Narrowing the focus for the semester. This semester, we will focus more on blogging. We will also touch on writing e-books and improving your website (especially in light of blogging). Regular blog posts. Especially since we will focus more on blogging, I will be dedicating myself to writing at least one blog post a week in addition to the podcast sessions. There may be additional posts, but nothing that I can promise now. Improved newsletter. I was thinking about going to a bi-weekly newsletter, which will include an article (not found on the website), some tips, and links to previous blog posts/podcast sessions. I will also have an e-book available that covers things that you need to get started with your website. I also hope to have another e-book that will cover how to take your website to the next level. I really want to increase the engagement that we have. I have received a few comments and several iTunes reviews, but I really want to have regular interaction. I started this site by stating that I am not the expert, but I do have experience and knowledge I can share. And so do you! Even if you don't think you have done much, there is still someone that you can help influence. I want to hear from you in the comment section, via e-mail, and now I have a voice mail number you can call right from your phone. I'd also like to schedule time to talk with you one on one. The 2015 Winter Semester Even though we are technically starting in 2014, most of this semester will fall in 2015. With our focus on blogging, I have created a mindmap of the topics that we will be trying to cover. We may not get to all of them, or we may not get deep into some of them. If you would like to download the PDF of this mindmap, you can do that here or click the image of it. Your Platform The platform for your website is important. Whether you are looking at a platform for a blog or a full-purpose website, my recommendation is a self-hosted WordPress site. We talked about WordPress several times last semester, and we were able to get some great information about it. I honestly have not used some of the others, like Joomla, Drupal, and Square Space, but based on many reviews I heard and read, WordPress brings both simplicity and power to the user. Note: While WordPress can be simple, there is still a learning curve, but much of it can be grasped in a short amount of time. Dave Jackson (School of Podcasting and Weekly Web Tools host) says that if you can use Microsoft Word, you can create a post on WordPress. This is true. But to take this analogy a little further, most people that create simple documents in Word barely scratch the surface of what the software is capable of, and it takes a little bit to learn them. Same with WordPress. When it comes to WordPress, there are two options: WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress. While these are basically the same at the core, there are some differences. I will try to have a blog post up in the near future to show these. Settings When you get WordPress installed, you get so excited about creating the content, that there are several settings that can easily get overlooked (check out this simple tutorial if you need help installing WordPress). General Settings Site title Tagline Timezone Permalinks Choose "Post Name" The post

I asked people a while ago about something that helps them to have a better quality of life. Several people answered that reading blogs, listening to podcasts, and writing were some things that helped to improve their quality of life. I agree with this, so I'll share some things about blogging and podcasting.
