Episode #016We explore the Kidcast podcasting landscape for a growing audience of younger listeners. We touch on marketing to children and why it's Kidcast monetization is a sensitive topic. We end by discussing the potential for creating smart kids using podcasting as an educational platform. What did we learn? Both Kyle and Tim agree that there are not enough Kidscasts.Kyle talks about how the Kidcasts world is still a Blue Ocean when it comes to your podcast production strategy. We discover how many Kidcasts are educational and well-produced to keep children engaged.Kyle raves about Gimlet's Story Pirates and why that show's format and marketing strategy is something to pay attention to.The myth that kids have short attention spans regarding Kidcasts is just that — a myth.Sponsors can monetize a Kidcast podcast, but it needs to be monitored by both producers and parents.Disney Kidcasts have yet to gain traction but could become a strong competitor in the children podcasting space over the next year.Tim points out that your first two (2) listens will be the parents. If it's good, your next 100 listens could be super loyal kids!Kyle and Tim both think that Kidcasts could be one of the genres that is a natural fit for podcasting paywalls (which is something that Disney is already considering).Tim sees Disney as the high-quality mark in Kidcasts.STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Kidcasts make up the majority of the market for children podcasting right now. There are 1.6 million home-schooled students that could benefit from podcast teaching with lesson plans by leveraging STEM Kidcasts. We touch briefly on where smart speakers fit into the Kidcast podcast equation.Quotes“A podcast aimed at 3-10-year-olds that parents could actually tolerate—if you could do it right—would be an unbelievable hit.”― Matt Lieber, GimletAdditional ReadingWhere Are All the Kidcasts? As Marketers Target Younger Consumers, Ethical Issues Arise3 Fundamentals of Ethically Marketing to KidsThe Podcasts That Will Make Your Kids SmarterPodcast MentionsKid Friendly Joke Of The DayThe Alien Adventures of Finn CaspianStory PiratesKid Friendly Disney Fun Facts PodcastRelated EpisodesEp.006 - Does Your Teacher Have a Podcast? Episode #015We question the reasons behind why Luminary tweeted: “Podcasts don't need ads”, then apologized and then deleted the tweet. This leads to a conversation that begins with, “Well, is Luminary technically correct? The best kind of correct?”We then weigh the pros and cons of having skip buttons in apps and if listeners are skipping most podcast ads.Tim talks about how a podcast ad led him to buy a new product based on the host's recommendation — and how it worked out well! What did we learn? Both Kyle and Tim agree that we are not against podcast ads, we just want better ads that take your audience into consideration.Practice moderation. Too many ads — no matter if they are host read or not — is still too many ads.If the advertising message or product matches the host AND the host's audience, then the ad works up to 25 percent of the time.Host Read ads appear to fit the content better because the host can personally connect the ad to the podcast. However, automated ad placement is still tone-deaf by creating a jarring listening experience created by poor dynamic ad placement and untested content alignment (SNL even made fun of this fact). The data shows that loyal followers will both trust a sponsor AND buy their product if they advertise with their favorite host.Sponsors are still the best way to monetize a podcast, even if you only sponsor yourself.Sorry, Luminary. Ads or no ads, paywalls for podcasting are still a bad idea (like we told you back in Episode #3).Additional ReadingPodcast Ads Are As Effective As TV Commercials, Study SaysPodcasting Has An Ad-Skipping Problem, TooJanuary Top 15: Skillshare learns podcast advertisingU.S. Podcast Ad Revenues Reached Landmark $314 Million in 2017, Marking 86% Growth Year-Over-Year, According to IAB & PwC ResearchThe #2 radio advertiser is also the #2 podcast advertiserQuotes“The #2 radio advertiser in 2017 is now also the #2 podcast advertiser, according to data from Magellan's podcast ad report for January. [That's why I charge $90 an episode]. How did I come up with this? I felt $50 wasn't worth the extra effort and paperwork involved. $70 didn't seem enough as I have a niche audience. $120 I was worried that they may not get their money back. I settled at $90. I'm thinking in the future I might charge $100 as I can do that and still sleep, and look at myself in the mirror”― Dave Jackson, School of PodcastingSupport the ShowEvery episode is a work of passion that requires a lot of coffee! Episode #014We talk about the top three categories that have the most shows. This leads to talking about why some categories are at the bottom of the list.We then move into talking about the podcasts that produce the most episodes. We finish off the show by talking about why your primary category is a factor in podcast discovery. What did we learn? The number one category in Apple Podcasts iTunes Directory is Religion and Spirituality: Christianity.Choose a category that your audience will think your podcast is in, not the category you think works best for you.The categories with the most podcasts are also producing the most content per show. The categories at the bottom may not be crowded because there is not much demand for their content. - However, they may also represent opportunities to dominate an underserved niche. Many of the categories that have both the most podcasts and the most episodes per show are producing daily podcasts.Just because a podcast category is crowded doesn't mean they are good shows nor does it mean they are all current shows either.Your category helps your audience find you, but it is your content that keeps them listening regardless of how many shows there are.Additional ReadingThese are the most crowded categories in Apple PodcastsApple Podcasts CategoriesPodcasters, have you looked at your secondary categories lately?iTunes podcast categories | What are they & are they important?Quotes“You may say, ‘Well, dragons don't exist.' Ep.48 - The Future is Nigh Tim and Kyle make their third annual podcast industry predictions about the future of podcasting, podcasting companies, and content in 2021. Episode at a Glance Tim and Kyle share their 2021 Predictions Since we hit 75-percent correct in 2019 AND 2020, these predictions are something you should pay attention too Turns out that Tim and Kyle CAN see the future -- 2-years in a row! Tim and Kyle's Predictions for 2021 Tim and Kyle are constantly making predictions about the Podcast Industry. Here are the predictions Tim and Kyle came up with before 2021: #20 – (Tim) Amazon will be a big player and will be the next one to set up a paywall — (Kyle) Amazon enters the content war by challenging Spotify and Apple with “music, podcast, and audiobook” killer apps. [20.1 - Not only a paywall... but one of the first ones to monetize your podcast.] #19 – (Kyle) Apple will start hosting podcast content and threaten indy podcast hosting companies. This will cause indy podcast companies to start buying out their competitors to form bigger hosting monsters and see the rise of New Podcast hosting companies appearing to support podcasts that have been kicked off of bigger platforms. [Podcast Pontifications with Evo Terra] #18 – (Tim) Disney will set up a paywall for all of their content (including podcast content). #17 – (Kyle) Localization and Local Podcast hubs will finally become a real thing. [Mathew Passy's interest in local podcast discovery] #16 – (Tim) Virtual conferences will increase in attendance outpacing in-person events historically (Podfest Global will beat last year’s record) [Chris Krimitsos' Podfest Events] #15 – (Kyle) Video podcasts will become synonymous with Audio podcasts. Meanwhile, Audio podcasters will have to adapt to the influx of new “video podcasters” but become pretentious “old guard” elitists. #14 – (Tim) Clubhouse will be the next big thing (Like Anchor) when it opens up to Android but will fizzle out quickly unless it is bought out by a big player. (Kyle) Clubhouse will die a quick, unceremonious death this Summer when everyone stops caring. #13 – (Kyle) This arrival of a new standards organization will flip IAB certification upon its ear because it will not be “good enough” for some. The result will create a few NEW standards that will renew the statistics war in podcasting. [Shake-Up at the Podcast Academy] #12 – (Tim) Samson Q9U microphone will come out this year. #11 – (Kyle) Adapt or die – The push for an “improved RSS feed” protocol will gain momentum and force the old RSS feed to finally be phased out. #10 – (Kyle) The number of Spanish-speaking podcasts will overtake English-speaking podcasts in a total number of active shows. [#10.1 - A new iTunes like application will emerge for Spanish Speaking podcasts. #10.2 - A lot more Bi-Lingual Podcasts, and English to Spanish and Spanish to English translations of podcasts.] #9 – (Tim) Apple Podcasts will hit 2-million total podcasts by November, (Kyle) forcing Apple to FINALLY fix their horrible search engine. #8 – (Kyle) Tons of active podcasts will DIE and the number of ACTIVE podcasts on Apple Podcasts will fall BELOW 100,000 as the Content Wars put more and more active podcasts behind paywalls. [#8.1 - Tim thinks below 200,000] #7 – (Kyle) Education-based podcasting will finally formalize to create new and better “podcast universities” where you can actually get a certification or even a degree just from listening to podcasts. #6 – (Tim) President-elect Joe Biden will have a podcast similar to Roosevelt’s Fire Side Chats (that Tim will produce) as (Kyle) every politician in 2021 running in 2022 (or not) starts a podcast — ALL OF THEM! #5 – (Kyle) Hollywood will use podcasting to continue to prototype new TV and Movie content creating a whole cadre of podcasters who become showrunners, writers, and producers for REAL production companies. Additionally, these podcasts will feature a tidal wave of known A/B/C level actors. [Actors in audio drama podcast The Oyster] #4 – (Tim) The first space podcast based in outer space will be started by Space X. [#spaceforce] #3 – (Kyle) The Content Wars heat up as media companies start buying up podcasters, podcast networks, podcast content, or any audio content not nailed down or copyrighted. #2 – (Kyle) Content gets EVEN SHORTER to support smart speaker content exclusively and most big podcasters will have a Shorty version of their shows to adapt to this trend. #1 – (Tim) Podwrecked will reach 75 episodes. [Recount: we actually hit #50 in 2020] Big Thoughts from this Episode "2020 was the year that we had to think about the coming changes; 2021 is the year that we now change how we think." -- Kyle M. Ep.47 - Who Had Pandemic On Their Bingo Card? Kyle and Tim become the oracles by reviewing their 2020 predictions and seeing how close they came to predicting the future of podcasting. Episode at a Glance Tim and Kyle see 2020 as the year to be thankful for what you have Tim and Kyle go through their 2020 predictions and score their clairvoyance. Tim and Kyle thank you for listening! Tim and Kyle's Predictions for 2020 Play along at home -- how do you think we did? Here are Tim and Kyle's predictions for the podcast industry in 2020: #20 – Someone will pay us $100 in 2020!!! (Episode #29). #19 – The ear of podcast festivals/conferences has hit its critical mass. There will be less in 2020 (Episode #29). #18 – Podcasts get shorter to be more morning briefs vs long form - middle will shink and the shorts and longs will get shorter and longer (Episode #29). #17 – Fed and state government expand podcast usage internally to employees for engagement (Episode #29). #16 – Growth of networks to keep up with content by buying up small podcasters to add to their portfolio (Episode #29). #15 – There will be 1-million podcasts in Apple Podcasts by April 2020 (Episode #29). #14 - National Podcast Post Month (NaPodPoMo) will double in challenge participants in November 2020 (Episode #27). #13 – Kyle thinks that Dave will one day soon create a podcast devoted to his Crazy Morning Zoo Crew Binky and the Wiz (Episode #21). #12 – Tim thinks that small businesses will be looking to expand advertising into new markets. They want to see this podcasting thing work in their market. Big ones take the risk first… then the smaller ones will to the benefit of all podcasters (Episode #20). #11 – Kyle thinks the Content Wars are coming! As these big podcast networks lose their star talent they are going to start lurking around the smaller networks and either buy their network or start poaching their talent (Episode #20). #10 – Tim’s prediction is that Disney is going to push into kidcast podcasting behind a paywall by 2020 (Episode #16). #10.1 - Disney and Amazon form an unholy alliance! #9 – Kyle also predicts that Apple will start punishing podcasters this year (in the rankings) that have not released an episode in over 6-months (Episode #14). #9.1 - Apple will accept money to keep your podcast on the directory forever! #8 – Kyle predicts that Apple will institute a new policy that will change the way they rank podcasts in the Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Directory by 2020 (Episode #14). #8.1 - Tired of waiting for Google to do it, Samsung creates their own podcast app! #7 – More podcasters will discover that recording before their audience live is one of the primary ways to grow their podcast 10-fold in 2019 (Episode #12). #6 – Audio Drama podcasters will be the next to leverage Patreon as their alternative monetization stream but only if they master bonus content and fan service outreach (e.g. live shows, swag, and appearances) (Episode #11). #5 – We are going to see a lot more people do that one and done episode. But that’s ok because they are going to learn to appreciate what goes into producing a podcast and they will become sponsors of podcasters who they like (Episode #10). #5.1 - The next Anchor-like company will appear in 2020! #4 – We will make it to the 50 episodes this year and we will make another 50 next year (Episode #10). #3 – Google Podcasts will eventually be native to Android, will be on every phone, and become a “must have” app for podcast listeners within the next three (3) years (Episode #9). #2 – A podcaster will have media credentials big enough to ask the President of the United States a question in 2020 (Episode #8). #1 – More True Crime podcasters will form content networks to improve their credibility and audience sizes in 2020 (Episode #8). Ep.41 - Deep in the Heart of Podfest Kyle and Tim record live from the biggest virtual podcasting conference in the world - Podfest Global Summit 2020 - and tell you what we've learned so far. Episode at a Glance Kyle and Tim come to you LIVE from Podfest Global Summit 2020 Only hours after we recorded this episode, Chris Krimitsos announced that they had broken the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS record for Largest Attendance for a Virtual Podcasting Conference in One Week (5,000+)! How's that for timing?! Tim and Kyle get into the experience we've had over the past week. What did we learn? Tim shares how virtual events involve timezones and you can now meet people from other countries. Kyle talks about how he likes the virtual better... and that he needs a hug. Tim explores how different people are online and attending from their homes. We get into how virtual connection makes people more vulnerable or feel safe because they can come and go at will. Kyle gets into how to sift through the massive amount of content or trying to pick between information tracks. Tim and Kyle explain the "un-conference" conference and how virtual applications can actually recreate the hallway-track experience. Tim talks about mini-cons and how Podfest has become more than just a single-topic conference. Tim teases out that Libsyn.com will be releasing a new interface called Libsyn 5 and their upcoming Beta Test. Tim is looking forward Libsyn swag that may include a chocolate microphone one day. Kyle asks you to go to the Schoolofpodcasting.com and ask Dave Jackson to be your coach as part of our help "Dave's Moving Expenses" non-campaign drive. We know that our show will come out right as Podfest Global Summit is ending but you can still get a ticket to watch all the videos AND be a part of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title until August 16th, 2020. Kyle gives listener Cliff a very person "Call To Action" based on lessons learned from Podfest Global Conference. Tim and Kyle share how podcasting is a common ground that makes very different people friends. Kyle has a "Yoda-Kyle" moment and Tim thinks it needs to be a new segment to the show. Tim makes not one, not two, but THREE predictions after attending this conference for a week (see below). Because of all the predictions, Tim is now Tim "POD-stradamus" Brien! Join us at Podfest Global Summit Simply stated, Podfest Global Summit is an extension of Podfest Multimedia Expo, one of the longest-running and tightest-knit communities of podcasters in the world! Podfest Expo is a community of people who are interested in and passionate about sharing their voice and message with the world through the powerful mediums of audio and video. We’re proud to unite as many people as possible to learn, get inspired, and grow better together. On top of the quality content and camaraderie, PODFEST has become famous for over the years, we are also attempting the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for Largest Attendance for a Virtual Podcasting Conference! Behind the Scenes After we recorded this episode, we lost Tim's side of the conversation! This is where Kyle learned that Squadcast.fm can recover web recordings using their "backup" feature. They are not pretty and the audio is completely out-of-sync... but it is better than having to re-record everything. Working with un-synced audio is very painful, but so is losing it all. So remember this: Two is one and one is none. Always have a backup. Now you know! I want to join the Podwrecked Salvage Team! Captains of Delphi Predictions #1 - Tim predicts that Podfest Global Summit will break the record. He made this prediction a full 36-hours before they actual DID break the record! #2 - Tim predicts that MORE conferences will embrace the virtual experience that MORE conferences will start to include a virtual connection to their LIVE events (hybrid conferences). #3 - Tim "POD-stradamus" Brien predicts that everyone's podcast consumption patterns have changed and believes that a new pattern to consumption will emerge. This will require podcasters to rethink how their listener actually listens to your podcast. How's that for timing?!Tim and Kyle get into the experience we've had over the past week. What did we learn?Tim shares how virtual events involve time zones and you can now meet people from other countries.Kyle talks about how he likes the virtual better… and that he needs a hug.Tim explores how different people are online and attending from their homes. We get into how virtual connection makes people more vulnerable or feel safe because they can come and go at will.Kyle gets into how to sift through the massive amount of content or try to pick between information tracks.Tim and Kyle explain the “un-conference” conference and how virtual applications can recreate the hallway-track experience.Tim talks about mini-cons and how Podfest has become more than just a single-topic conference.Tim teases out that Libsyn.com will be releasing a new interface called Libsyn 5 and their upcoming Beta Test.Tim is looking forward to Libsyn.com swag that may include a chocolate microphone one day.Kyle asks you to go to schoolofpodcasting.com and ask Dave Jackson to be your coach as part of our help “Dave's Moving Expenses” non-campaign campaign drive. We know that our show will come out right as Podfest Global Summit is ending but you can still get a ticket to watch all the videos AND be a part of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title until August 16th, 2020.Kyle gives listener Cliff a very personal “Call To Action” based on lessons learned from Podfest Global Conference.Tim and Kyle share how podcasting is a common ground that makes very different people friends.Kyle has a “Yoda-Kyle” moment and Tim thinks it needs to be a new segment of the show.Tim makes not one, not two, but THREE predictions after attending this conference for a week (see below).Because of all the predictions, Tim is now Tim “POD-stradamus” Brien!Behind the ScenesAfter we recorded this episode, we lost Tim's side of the conversation! This is where Kyle learned that Squadcast.fm can recover web recordings using their “backup” feature. They are not pretty and the audio is completely out-of-sync… but it is better than having to re-record everything.Working with un-synced audio is very painful, but so is losing it all. So remember this: Two is one and one is none.Always have a backup … and now you know!Join us at Podfest Global SummitSimply stated, Podfest Global Summit is an extension of Podfest Multimedia Expo, one of the longest-running and tightest-knit communities of podcasters in the world! Podfest Expo is a community of people who are interested in and passionate about sharing their voice and message with the world through the powerful mediums of audio and video. We're proud to unite as many people as possible to learn, get inspired, and grow better together. On top of the quality content and camaraderie that PODFEST has become famous for over the years, we are also attempting the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Largest Attendance for a Virtual Podcasting Conference!Quotes“All life is an experiment. Ep.40 - Did You Pause or Did You Podfade? Kyle talks to Tim about his experimental podcast Clearly Obtuse and the challenges Tim has had with producing it on schedule. Episode at a Glance Kyle interviews Tim using the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting. Tim and Kyle discuss the differences between a podcast pause, podfade, and podwreck. Tim goes deep into his challenges with producing Clearly Obtuse and how he plans to get back on track. What did we learn? Step 1 — Acceptance: Acceptance is Step One of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to ask yourself to admit that your podcast is worth working on or let it podfade. Step 2 — Humility: Humility is Step Two of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to believe that you don’t know everything about podcasting. Step 3 — Clarity: Clarity is Step Three of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to get real and honest feedback about your podcast if you are ever going to improve it. Step 4 — Insight: Insight is Step Four of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to take an honest look at your podcast and prioritize what you need to fix or improve. Step 5 — Commit: Committing to your podcast requires you to get disciplined about your goals if you have any chance of guarding against distractions. Step 6 — Focus: Focus is Step Six of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to rebuild your motivation and find your hunger for podcasting before you can truly get back to podcasting. Step 7 — Reflection: Reflection is Step Seven of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to earn your right to be podcasting by first doing the work, celebrating your wins, and then getting to stay podcasting by never forgetting what you have endured to get here. Step 8 — Fellowship: Fellowship is Step Eight of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting asks you to go find other podcasters, learn about their journey, and discover that you are not alone. Step 9 — Mentorship: It’s time to actively give back what you have learned to the podcasting community and become the mentor that keeps other podcasters from podfading.
