Growing up in Mattoon, IL, Rick Sims (guitar, vocals) spent his early years drinking beer, smoking dope and practicing in the chicken shed in Sullivan, IL with his brother Brad (drums). Joined by Doug Evans (bass), they put together some crazy-ass music and the Didjits were born! From 1986 thru 1993, they put out five great records, including Hey Judester. We talk with Rick about how those records came to be made and we also get into some stories about the intensely crazy live Didjits shows. And we are all stoked about the new Didjits Record Store Day release of Strictly Dynamite: The Best of Didjits coming out 4/20/2024. Of course, we also talk about all things Chicago - and ... is Rick going to play live again???Time stamps:2:00: Starting a punk band in Mattoon, IL (really a Sullivan, IL)3:15: Did you ever eat at the original Burger King in Mattoon?5:10: What were some of your original influences?7:45: Dave Landis did all the Didjits record jackets and shared a lot of cool punk rock with the band.10:15: Touch & Go didn't like the first record Fizzjob.10:45: What did you like about the 50's crazy performers like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.14:00: How did you end up getting hooked up with Iain Burgess who produced your first 3 records?16:00: How did you get the great sound on Hey Judester?17:00: How did you connect with Touch & Go?19:40: Hornet Piñata recording experience?22:15: Did your success catch you off guard?24:45: Did Doug & Brad encourage the Rick Sims wild-man persona?27:35: Did your crowd-baiting ever get you in trouble?29:15: Did you get crap from your lyrical content and could you write those same songs today?34:00: How did you decide to switch over to Steve Albini for the last two records?37:05: How did you come to live in Chicago?38:40: How did The Offspring end up putting "Killjoy Powerhead" on their mega-album Smash in 1994?41:05: The Didjits breakup is a messy one.43:35: Record Store Day -- Strictly Dynamite: The Best of Didjits. On today's episode, we have a conversation with our old friend (and James' oldest friend), Chad Wiener - along with special guest host Melanie Harmon! "Hailing from Matton, Illinois, the Didjits released their first album on Touch and Go, “Hey Judester,” in 1988. The world, or at least my small world, would not be the same. Gravitating towards any and all punk bands in the summer of 1989, the Didjits was one band that stuck out to me. They had attitude, humor, loud guitars, shrieking vocals, deafening drums and bass, but, most of all, just in-your-face rock'n'roll with all the punk brashness and arrogance you could handle. This record (really, dubbed cassette, but I would come to buy it later, and even the CD with their first record, “Fizzjob”) would have heavy rotation in my car or home stereo, and it would shape the sound, attitude, and lyrics of the band I would come to form with friends Jason Albert, James Joyce, Eric Minnick, and Brian Lysne, the Midget Farmers. There is never a dull moment on this record, from the blazing speed of “Max Wedge” to the slow grind of “Under the Christmas Fish” to the ballad my band covered, “Dad,” and nine other songs that Rick Sims likely wrote while high. So, come join me, Chad Wiener, with Cassy, James, and Melanie Harmonas we return to the early 90s to relive the glory days of the second coming of punk."
Kind of a follow-up to the Mike Magrann episode! Tom makes a quick trip to Chicago to see Channel 3, and the boys record face to face at Neil's. While Tom is visiting, the guys do what they do best - record shopping, socializing and drinking! The action packed recap includes music by Channel 3, The Undead, Squared Off, Didjits, The Exploited, Fastplants, The Ratchets and Dealing with Damage.

Burnt Hickory Brewery's Scott Hedeen is part idea man, part madman I first met Scott Hedeen when Burnt Hickory Brewery was just a few months old. Over the years he has become one of my very favorite people in the whole world. He's also very high on the list of people that drive me crazy. It's a weird relationship, but it works. Hedeen is an idea man. He's constantly thinking (and talking) about what's next. For him, for others, for everything. The wheels are constantly spinning. This makes for some great conversations, amazingly creative ideas, and a 5-minute phone call about hops turning into a 50-minute phone call about IPA, playing the theremin, 80s punk, and standup comedy. Hedeen founded his brewery in 2011 and produced his first commercial batch in April 2012. Back then, his Wonka World of craft beer only opened to the public one Saturday each month. Initially, 20-30 dedicated fans showed up for the tastings but it wasn't long before they numbered in the hundreds. BHB's fans weren't just normal beer lovers, they felt connected to the brewery and the beer, they were passionate about it. Those who didn't "get" what Burnt Hickory was about went as far as calling their fans a cult. That's not far from the truth. This week, Hedeen and Burnt Hickory taproom manager Heddy Proctor join us to talk about their adventure. We talk a little bit about their brewery and growth, a lot about music, why it's important for breweries to support homebrewers, and several other topics that I was not able to keep up with. Scott has something to say about everything, and we tried to catch as much of it as we could. This is Burnt Hickory Brewery's third appearance on Beer Guys Radio. They also joined us on Ep. 13 in March 2016 and Ep. 56 in Jan. 2017. In this week's news we talk about comedian Jim Gaffigan's jab at craft beer, I oldest brewery in the world is found, and Atlanta taking the #1 spot in a list of growing craft beer destinations.
