To make proper pastiche, it takes true love for what you're taking the piss out of. Anyone can rip off, it takes a disciple to poke fun and ascend simultaneously. And, miraculously, Australian pop prince Kirin J Callinan pilfered from EDM, country and ‘80s pop to create the silliest love letter of the 2010s. But, in the dark, beautiful corners of Bravado there is a wondrous vulnerability that casts all of Callinan's prancing and crooning in a new light. This was a labor of exploration, debauchery and a reverent screed to the power of pop music. So listen to our implausible interview with Kirin, read our thoughts on Bravado and see why it's one of the best of the 10s. “I was trying to find beauty in ugliness. Gravitating toward the worst sounds, the worst lyrics, the worst ideas I could.” — Kirin J Callinan

On today's episode, we have a conversation with our old friend (and James' oldest friend), Chad Wiener - along with special guest host Melanie Harmon! "Hailing from Matton, Illinois, the Didjits released their first album on Touch and Go, “Hey Judester,” in 1988. The world, or at least my small world, would not be the same. Gravitating towards any and all punk bands in the summer of 1989, the Didjits was one band that stuck out to me. They had attitude, humor, loud guitars, shrieking vocals, deafening drums and bass, but, most of all, just in-your-face rock'n'roll with all the punk brashness and arrogance you could handle. This record (really, dubbed cassette, but I would come to buy it later, and even the CD with their first record, “Fizzjob”) would have heavy rotation in my car or home stereo, and it would shape the sound, attitude, and lyrics of the band I would come to form with friends Jason Albert, James Joyce, Eric Minnick, and Brian Lysne, the Midget Farmers. There is never a dull moment on this record, from the blazing speed of “Max Wedge” to the slow grind of “Under the Christmas Fish” to the ballad my band covered, “Dad,” and nine other songs that Rick Sims likely wrote while high. So, come join me, Chad Wiener, with Cassy, James, and Melanie Harmonas we return to the early 90s to relive the glory days of the second coming of punk."

Revisiting Cultural Spaces: Ethan James Green Reflects on Growing Up

What's Contemporary Now?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2023 22:51

New York–based photographer Ethan James Green is renowned for his distinct eye and the intimacy and openness portrayed in his work. An early career in modeling and exposure to some of the great photography visionaries of the times paved the path to a whirlwind career in fashion. Today his work, which has appeared in prominent publications and campaigns—including Dazed, i-D, M le Monde, Perfect, Vogue Italia, Vogue, and W, as well as Alexander McQueen, Dior, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton—spotlights elemental themes, such as contemporary identity, sexuality, and style. A published author, his books reflect on and display the scope of queer identity of the past decade, feminine performance, erotic costume, and beauty. Hailing from Michigan and raised in a religious household, he chats about his spiritual journey, as well as discovering and integrating with the queer community. In this episode, he relays to Christopher Michael how he shifts between his two worlds, of fashion as a photographer and art as a gallerist, highlighting the need to create bridges among generational aesthetics and perspectives. What's Contemporary Now? Being authentic, breaking rules, and moving forward even when it's uncomfortable. Episode Highlights: Point of entry: New York (via Tokyo) was the initial inspiration for the 17-year-old model. Working with the greats: Ethan learned a lot while modeling for some of the preeminent fashion photographers of the time, such as Steven Meisel (how to communicate a commanding, confident voice without aggression), Mikael Jansson, and David Sims (how to streamline the process of capturing iconic images and the tricks that facilitate success). Out of Michigan: Ethan staked his claim as a model—and ultimately a photographer—by leveraging determination and a homegrown portfolio that attracted notice. Turning point: Ethan's mentor is the artist and photographer behind the 2011 book "David Armstrong: 615 Jefferson Avenue"—he embodied and modeled integrity. Moving beyond: Ethan's fundamentalist upbringing proved a beautiful challenge, allowing a personal spiritual journey that led him to understand what was true for him. Doing the work: Integrating with the queer community opened Ethan to an entirely new community that replaced his childhood church community. Trans awareness: Understanding his struggle as a gay man in a broader context. Making it: The moment Ethan knew he'd made it: covers for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and an Alexander McQueen campaign. Then Rihanna! That was a moment. A perfect superstorm: Ethan became sober just before the pandemic and found himself subsequently challenged in his ability to connect as an artist and individual. Gravitating towards art: Ethan embraced an artistic ethic that opened up a transgenerational conversation across artists, galleries, and social media. Bridging spaces: To span modeling, photography, and now gallery art seamlessly, Ethan had to find brilliant collaborators; pursue other work before focusing on fashion photography; assist where he could; find a mentor; and break some rules! What's Contemporary Now? What's authentic to the moment, but also what's synthetic to the moment? It is mixing collaboration and multiple perspectives to advance the conversation, taking the next step, even if uncomfortable, and breaking the rules to move forward.

The best way to network is to do it authentically. In the process of meeting new people and finding a way to help them, we are creating a network without realising it. When we do networking freely, we find more people we are aligned with and that's how we find our tribe. In this episode, Shona Chambers, a freelance marketing consultant, talks about the importance of finding your tribe. You will learn tips on how you can create a network authentically and how you can find opportunities with your network naturally. Listen and Enjoy!   Key takeaways from this episode: We all have a natural network. There are always going to be people who are already more attuned to the direction that you're going in. If you meet somebody, think about what they are looking for and how you can help them in a gentle process. There are two kinds of people, the ones that want to be out there with others and the ones that don't. Collaborations don't have to be necessarily about making money together, it can be about how you can grow your audience together or find new people that you would not find alone. Understand yourself as a social creature and think about whether you want to be bound to recommending certain people for positions when they come up or you want to be free to network with people you find yourself more aligned with. Just try to be a nice person to help others. Figure out how you can do something a little bit first before you go full into it. Nowadays, there's no such thing as a job for life. Whether you stay in an industry for life is another thing, but having multiple ways of paying your bills is a good idea.   Episode Timeline: 00:00 Episode Intro 00:38 Podcast Intro 02:30 About Shona Chambers 03:59 How Shona ended up with her current business 07:12 How Shona got her first clients 11:17 Doing collaborations with other people 13:40 Networking online 14:35 Gravitating towards authentic networking and finding opportunities through it 15:43 How Shona found her tribe when she went freelance 17:09 Networking by just trying to help others 18:40 Shona's advice for people who are thinking of going freelance or starting a new business 20:17 How to find more about Shona Chambers --- Outro   Connect with Shona and download her book here: Website:https://www.shonachambersmarketing.co.uk  Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/marketing-tips-small-business-owners-ebook/dp/B08J4JPZK9    Book Recommendation: The Multi-hyphen Method by Emma Gannon https://www.emmagannon.co.uk    More about Ruth: Hi, I'm Ruth, a business coach specializing in helping freelancers and business owners adjust their mindset and their marketing so they can get fully booked with clients they LOVE to work with. Dorann Nelson is a lifelong creative who found her artistic groove fashioning Halloween figures in the Appalachian Mountains. Her art took a backburner while she raised her family and worked as an interior designer/architect for the Department of Defense. Dorann worked on everything from designing a general's office to expanding an aircraft hangar. She only had time to do art in the wee hours of the night, hence the name of her business, Moonlight Artistry.  After years of career relocations, Dorann and her husband settled in the Asheville area of North Carolina. Dorann designed and built her dream studio and got to work creating mixed media. She started out in Christmas, but found Halloween is her true calling. She describes her version of Halloween as quirky, mysterious, and whimsical.   She cofounded a figurative artist group, GoFigure Guild, which has become her creative tribe. GoFigure pushes each member to continuously grow their skills. Their desire to educate and delight is evident in their exhibits at the library and show-and-tell sessions with kids.   Dorann is enamored with using unique materials such as: old wigs from Goodwill, rotten picket fences, and paper towels. She sees faces in trees and scepters in roots. Her daughters tease her that's she's a Druid.   Dorann was one of the producers of the Spirits of Autumn art show. The show was paused because of the pandemic, but Dorann hopes it can return someday. While it's difficult to produce a show and make work for it, Dorann admits she works best under stress. Not getting the love she wanted, Petia developed an eating disorder at age 11 which she struggled with for two decades. At 18 she ran away from home and even attempted suicide. Gravitating toward what she knew, her relationships were often with abusive men who cheated on her. She went through life believing something was wrong with her, yet a deeper feeling tugged at her, telling her there was more. With the help of a mentor, Petia identified her core values and realized that her choices in life actually went against those values. She also saw how she lost herself in relationships, catering to her partner's needs while ignoring her own. Join me for a lively conversation with Petia where we talk about self-love, surrender, manifesting (which is how she met her current husband), Human Design and more. Today she works as a transformational coach and podcast host of “Unapologetically Abundant,” helping women align with who they are and creating abundance in their lives. If we want to be people who shift the gravity of whatever room we're in, we need to carve out time to gravitate toward God's Word. In this episode of the Shift the Gravity Podcast, pastors Aaron Brockett and Ryan Bramlett share insights on the Sermon on the Mount, diving into what Jesus preached and who the Sermon was actually intended for. They also share practical ways you can read, absorb, and apply what you read in God's Word to your own life. If you think mental illness or disorders are just affecting a small group of people…here is a stat to put things into perspective. 42% of the global workforce has experienced a decline in their mental health since the beginning of the pandemic.  42% isn't a number to shake a stick at… It begs the question, why is there still such a strong stigma around topics regarding mental health? With more people than ever experiencing it now, we have an amazing opportunity to enter into compassionate conversation and end the stigma once and for all.  Our guest today is working towards this goal with fierce passion. Michelle E. Dickinson is a Wellbeing Strategist and passionate mental health advocate. She sees herself as the bridge that helps people get comfortable with their mental health. Allowing them to reach out and get the support they need before a crisis hits. Michelle takes us on a journey through her childhood from growing up with a mom who had severe bipolar disorder to shedding her anger and learning to heal with compassion and understanding.  It wasn't until she was diagnosed with depression that Michelle really dove into therapy. There she would learn through extensive self-discovery and patience that her childhood was more than distant memories. You'll hear how Michelle has shaped her life for the better, not in spite of her mom's abuse, but by using it as motivation to create psychological resilience and mental health strategies that cultivate cultures of compassion. Listen in as we discuss the importance of bringing this into the workplace and how leaders can set an example and create a safe place for their employees.  If you are struggling with your mental health, chances are you aren't the only one. This episode will leave you feeling empowered to take a step out and have that brave conversation. It may just change the course of your life for good.  Always in your corner,  Chuck and Clint For more resources or to get in touch with Michelle, check out the links below!    More Of What's Inside: Growing up with a mentally ill parent Finding support outside of home The journey of forgiving her mom Changing the perspective on Bipolar Disorder Repeating patterns based on your childhood Being diagnosed with depression The power of your relationship with your parents Educating the corporate space on mental illness How you can support the people you lead Normalizing conversation on mental illness Setting the tone as a leader  Using self-awareness to root out bias And much more!     GUEST LINKS: Website: https://www.careforyourpeople.com/ Website: https://www.michelleedickinson.com/ Website: https://breakingintomylife.com/ Website: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn6Yaq3AqLUebGmfZoRdB4Q Instagram: @michelledickinson71 Twitter: @mdickinson13 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/michelle.dickinson.146?ref=bookmarks LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelle-e-dickinson-7882013 Free Book Exerpt: http://breakingintomylife.com/excerpt Website: http://www.mantherapy.org/   LINKS: malarchuk.com/book  malarchuk.com  www.thecompassionateconnection.com  www.warriorsunmasked.com  Follow us on Instagram Like us on Facebook Subscribe To Our YouTube My Community Contact   Episode Minute By Minute: 0:02 - What we cover today!  1:38 - Introducing Michelle E. On today's program, we look at the new social media platform Gab.  It's become home to a number of Christian leaders and others who have been kicked off of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other mainstream platforms.  And we also look at the strange case of Pastor Saeed Abedini.  Free Pastor Saeed was a rallying cry for evangelicals five years ago.  But his ex-wife now says we didn't know the whole story.  We begin today with the latest on the missionaries that were kidnapped in Haiti. Before we go.  Just a reminder that there's a quick, easy, and FREE way you can support this podcast, and that is to give us a rating on your podcast app.  The more ratings we get, the more attention we get from search engines, and that helps new listeners find us.  And, by the way, when you give us a rating, leave us a comment, too.  I read them all. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth.  Writers who contributed to today's program include Christina Darnell, Anne Stych, Kim Roberts, Steve Rabey, Bob Smietana, Yonat Shimron, Jack Jenkins, Kathryn Post, Michael Ray Smith, Rod Pitzer—and Warren Smith. Special thanks to The NonProfit Times, Religion UnPlugged, and WORLD for contributing material for this week's program. Until next time, may God bless you.
