Don't Let Doubt Define or Defeat You | Restored & Sent Have you ever felt like your questions and doubts disqualify you from faith? You're not alone. The reality is that doubt is something virtually all Christians experience at some point in their faith journey. We'll challenge the one-dimensional view of "Doubting Thomas" by revealing six dimensions of his faith journey that are often overlooked. Through Thomas's story in the Gospel of John, we discover a disciple who was: 1. Willing to Sacrifice - When others hesitated to follow Jesus into danger, Thomas boldly declared, "Let us also go that we may die with him" (John 11:16) 2. Prepared to Follow - Even when uncertain of the destination, Thomas honestly asked questions to better understand and follow Jesus 3. Fully Honest - Rather than pretending to believe, Thomas expressed his doubts openly 4. Supported with Evidence - Jesus didn't rebuke Thomas for his questions but provided the evidence he needed 5. Stronger Than He Gets Credit For - Thomas made one of the strongest confessions of faith in scripture: "My Lord and my God!" 6. A Faith That Spreads to Others - Thomas's journey from doubt to conviction continues to help countless believers You'll walk away with a new perspective to never allow a season of doubt to limit your future walk with and effectiveness for Jesus. God is big enough to handle your questions and has given us all the evidence we need. Whether you're currently wrestling with questions or walking alongside someone who is, this message offers practical hope that doubt can be a doorway to deeper belief rather than a dead end. Jesus Changes Everything | Restored & Sent After the resurrection, Jesus didn't wait for the disciples to figure things out — He met them in the middle of their fear, behind locked doors, and changed everything. In John 20:19–23, we see the risen Jesus offer four things we all desperately need: His presence, His peace, His power, and His purpose. Because of His victory over the grave, we don't have to rely on our own strength to navigate life's fears and uncertainties. Jesus steps into our lives, breathes new life into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, and calls us to live boldly for Him. Key Insights: • Jesus meets us in our fear — not after we've fixed it • The peace Jesus gives is deeper than circumstances • Jesus offers what no one else can: peace, power, and purpose • Every believer is called and empowered to be sent • The resurrection isn't the end of the story — it's the beginning of new life Key Scripture: John 20 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.20.NIV) This message invites us to open every closed-off place in our lives and trust Jesus to fill them with His freedom. His peace quiets our fears. His Spirit empowers us to live fully. His purpose gives meaning to every step we take. Wherever you are, Jesus is ready to meet you — and change everything. The Cross & Resurrection Change Everything | Easter at Burnt Hickory What if the final words of Jesus on the cross—"It is finished"—hold the key to your freedom today? This Easter message explores how these three words changed everything, not just for those who witnessed the crucifixion, but for everyone seeking hope, healing, and transformation in their lives now. Key Insights: 1. The Meaning of "Tetelestai" - Jesus' final declaration was used by servants reporting completed tasks, artists finishing masterpieces, and priests confirming sacrifices—all pointing to how Jesus fully satisfied our debt of sin. Mary's Journey from Grief to Joy - Mary came to the tomb seeking closure, not resurrection. Her encounter with the risen Jesus transformed her sorrow into purpose, demonstrating how Jesus can "put you back together" regardless of your struggle. The Resurrection's Transformative Power - The disciples went from hiding in fear to becoming the foundation of Christian faith because of "none other than the undisputed resurrection of King Jesus." This message explores how the historical events of Easter continue to impact lives today. Whether you're seeking to understand how much Jesus loves you, considering giving your life to Him, or finding yourself "in a deep, dark, heavy moment" needing to come back to faith, discover how the cross and resurrection offer more than religious tradition—they provide the power to transform your story completely. Held in the Gardener's Hands | Power and Promise | John 15:1-8 Walking through the rich Holy Land context of John 15, this message unpacks Jesus' intimate teaching to His disciples after the Last Supper as they crossed the Kidron Valley toward the Mount of Olives. Using the familiar metaphor of vineyards, Jesus reveals Himself as the true vine and God as the gardener who tends to believers in two essential ways. Key Insights: • Jesus HOLDS Every Branch in His Hands - Understanding your secure position in Christ and how God lifts up fallen branches to reconnect them to the source of life. • Jesus APPLIES the Shears with Love - Why pruning isn't punishment but preparation for greater fruitfulness in your life. • Jesus NOURISHES Our Connection - The vital importance of abiding in Christ and how this relationship sustains us. • Jesus DEVELOPS lasting FRUIT - How genuine spiritual fruit comes only through connection to the vine. • Jesus STAYS through Every Season - Finding comfort in being chosen and kept by the Gardener who never gives up on you. Key Scripture: John 15 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.15.NIV) Whether you're questioning your faith journey, struggling with spiritual growth, or seeking to understand God's purpose in difficult seasons, this message reminds us that "the gardener isn't looking to get rid of you. "The Way, The Truth, and The Life" – Power and Promise In this message, Pastor Matt explores Jesus' declaration in John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Set during Jesus' final moments with His disciples before His crucifixion, this sermon reveals how Jesus used Jewish wedding customs to illustrate His relationship with believers. Just as a Jewish bridegroom would prepare a place for his bride and return for her, Jesus promises to prepare heavenly dwellings for His followers and come back for them. Key Insights: * Jesus doesn't just show us a path—He IS the destination * Christianity isn't about religious performance but about "knowing, growing, and walking closer with Jesus, our eternal Savior" * From our first breath of faith to our final earthly moment, our relationship with Christ should be growing more intimate * Jesus patiently addresses His disciples' confusion and questions, showing us how He meets us in our uncertainty Key Scripture: John 14 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.14.NIV) This message concludes with an invitation for believers who haven't yet been baptized to take this first step of obedience in their Christian walk. As Jesus tells His troubled disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." Whether you're new to faith or have been following Jesus for years, this message will deepen your understanding of what it truly means to follow Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. "The Resurrection and Life" | Power and Promise In this message, we explore one of Jesus' most profound "I AM" statements through the dramatic story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. When Mary and Martha sent word that "the one you love is sick," Jesus made a surprising decision - He stayed where He was for two more days. This intentional delay reveals an important truth: God's timing, though often mysterious to us, always serves His greater purpose. As Jesus told His disciples, "For your sake, I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe." Key Insights: • Jesus' Emotional Response: When Jesus saw Mary weeping, he wasn't just sad - he was deeply moved and angry at death. • When Jesus asked to remove the stone, Martha reminded him that Lazarus had been dead four days and "stinketh" (KJV). This wasn't just death - it was decay, making the miracle even more extraordinary. • With just three words - "Lazarus, come out!" - Jesus demonstrated His authority over death itself. This message speaks directly to anyone who has questioned God's timing, felt abandoned in suffering, or faced the reality of death. You'll discover that Jesus doesn't just offer resurrection as a future hope - He IS the resurrection and life right now, transforming our disappointment, suffering, and grief into opportunities to truly believe. He knows each sheep individually, at their worst, yet gives His best. • He Unites His Sheep - Breaking down every cultural, ethnic, and social barrier, creating one unified flock under His perfect leadership. By surrendering to His eternal presence, living in awe of His bigness, and being deeply devoted to His love. Jesus doesn't just ask us to believe; He invites us to live fully surrendered—to let go of the world's expectations and embrace a life set apart, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and driven by a purpose beyond ourselves. We'll explore what it looks like to say "yes" to God each day, trusting that He can realign our plans, reshape our desires, and repurpose our gifts for His glory. As we look at examples of surrender in Scripture, we're reminded that Jesus is worth any cost, any sacrifice, and any risk we might take to follow Him. Join us as we discover together how God intends to use each of us, how the Spirit empowers us, and how we can live fully for Him. Ready to take the next step? When life feels uncertain, and challenges press in, where do we turn? Today's message in our Faith in Action series explores James 5:13-18 to reveal the power of prayer—how faith-fueled prayers bring healing, forgiveness, and transformation. Through questions on prayer, faith, and confession, we discover why God listens to prayers rooted in trust and humility, and how confession opens us to His healing. We'll explore practical ways to approach God, pursue righteousness, and commit to continual prayer, following the example of Elijah's bold faith. Are you ready to unlock the transformative power of prayer? Take your next step in your faith journey at burnthickory.com/next.
What does patience look like in your life? In today's message from the book of James, we dive into the profound connection between faith and patience. We explore how Godly patience is not just about waiting, but about trusting—looking back on God's faithfulness, looking forward to His promises, and looking up for His strength. Through the examples of the farmer, the prophets, and the life of Job, we see how patience develops perseverance in the midst of life's trials. This kind of patience grows when we stand firm in faith, even when things seem uncertain. Are you facing challenges that test your patience? Today's message offers insight into how you can deepen your faith, build perseverance, and discover how God is full of compassion and mercy even in the waiting. If you're ready to take the next step in your faith journey, we invite you to visit burnthickory.com/next.
We want to Today, we dive into a vital question: Are we truly living in line with God's will? In this message, we explore what it means to have an active, ongoing commitment to do the will of God. As we reflect on the teachings of James, we'll unpack the four common attitudes people have toward God's will—ignoring it, denying it, disobeying it, or faithfully doing it. We'll also consider what God's will looks like in our lives: being radically saved, controlled by the Holy Spirit, pursuing a pure life, and submitting to His authority. Ultimately, a life in step with God's will is not just about knowing what is right—it's about living it out in every moment, every decision. Where do you stand in your journey? Have you surrendered your life to follow God's will? If you're ready to take the next step, we'd love to connect with you, answer your questions, and pray with you. Feel free to reach out, and remember—you're never walking this journey alone. Join us today and learn how you can align your life with God's purpose and discover true fulfillment. Fear is a gift from God. It can propel us forward and lead us to act. But what about the times when fear paralyzes us? This morning, as we hear from our Student Pastor, Chip Paul, we'll explore the tension between faith and fear. It's easy to let fear take over and guide our lives, but God's promises remind us that we are never alone, that He is our God, and that He will strengthen and uphold us. We'll look at four promises from Isaiah to break free and no longer be afraid: God is with us, He is our strength, and He will sustain us through every challenge. This is a message of hope, purpose, and living intentionally for Christ, even in the face of uncertainty. Join us as we discover how faith can overcome fear and how we can live out that faith boldly, trusting in God's promises every step of the way. Our hope is that you and your family find a home with us where you can learn, grow, live, and thrive in Christ Jesus. Your words hold incredible power! They can uplift, guide, and praise—but they can also harm, deceive, and destroy. As we dive deeper into the book of James, we'll uncover one of our greatest tools: the tongue. Just like a small rudder steering a massive ship, our words reflect our hearts' true direction. Together, we'll explore how the tongue reveals our relationship with Christ and wields immense power over our lives. The challenge? Acknowledging its influence and the ripple effects it has on everything around us. However, when we surrender it to God, the tongue transforms into a powerful instrument for honoring Him and guiding others. Join us on this journey as we discover how to tame the tongue and realize we can't do it alone.
Attending versus membership: why should someone become a member of the church? What does it truly offer? Today's sermon will show the significance of standing behind and belonging to a church community. God invites us not just to attend but to engage and grow within His family fully. As we explore the teachings of Jesus in the book of Matthew, we'll see His passion for the church and understand why being an active part of a local church is essential for our spiritual well-being. The church is not just a building; it's a called-out body of believers. Join us as we look at scripture and the heart of the church and learn how to deeply root ourselves in a community that embodies God's love and calling for each of us.
Words are easy, but are your actions telling a different story? As we continue our journey through the book of James, we're covering a powerful lesson: the connection between belief and action. James reminds us that faith without works is not just stagnant—it's lifeless. It's not enough to simply profess our faith; we must pursue a growing, thriving faith that propels us to act, serve, and uplift those around us. We'll explore three types of faith—dead, demonic, and saving—and reflect on how true, growing faith can spark true transformations in our lives. Together, we'll see the benefit of striving for a faith that's so much more than the words we speak and where we will see the true fruit produced when our faith aligns with our words and motivates our actions. We can't wait to worship and grow with you! We want to show and receive God's love to those around us, and we live that out practically everyday. We strive to bring hope by meeting physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of everyone we come in contact with. Love your neighbor as yourself. But how do we truly embrace this calling when differences arise? What if we find ourselves prioritizing or brushing off others, whether a coworker or even a family member, because of how we view them? This morning, as we continue our journey through the book of James, we invite you to reflect with us on the theme of favoritism. Together, we'll uncover how favoritism can challenge our understanding of love and community and how it can steer us away from the grace we are called to embody. Join us in this exploration as we seek to align our hearts with God's vision of love, mercy, and justice for everyone. Let's walk boldly in our faith, celebrating diversity and unity without bias. As Christians, we are called to live a life of prayer, and here at Burnt Hickory, we want you to be empowered to grow in truth as you live out your faith through prayer. You see, prayer is more than just our petitions to God the Father for needs; prayer carries our purpose in following God's will and contains power as it aligns our hearts with His. Through prayer, we commune with God and, in turn, bear fruit in good works and grow in the knowledge of Him. Pray doesn't change God's mind, it changes our hearts – drawing us closer to Him through knowledge, understanding, and the imparting of wisdom. Are you in the habit of praying daily? Does your prayer life draw you closer to God? Do you need help in learning how to pray effectively or to live out your prayer life through joining opportunities for prayer? This week, we delve into the pitfalls of idolatry. Drawing from the rich narratives in Exodus, we will examine how the Israelites' creation of the golden calf serves as a stark warning about the dangers of shaping God into our own image instead of worshipping Him as He truly is. We will reflect on how we, too, can fall into the trap of creating our own "gods" in times of uncertainty and stress, rebelling against the one true source of satisfaction for our souls. This sermon will challenge us to trust in God's revelation, even when circumstances are unclear, and to expose and surrender our idols to Christ. We will learn the importance of recognizing and fleeing from sin, understanding its inevitable consequences, and grounding our trust in the God revealed in Scripture, rather than in cultural or personal distortions. We invite you to reflect on these vital questions: Are there idols you've created in your life? Are you truly trusting in God's revealed character through Scripture? As always, we'd love to take the time to answer any questions you have and to pray with you – so reach out. Scott Hedeen was the quintessential beer fan. Back in the days when it was still cool to run all over Hell's left testicle and cellar beers that don't distribute to your state so you can trade them with other nerds of similar or increased nerdocity. The only thing he may have been more into than beer was (maybe is) music. But Scott's on this podcast not because he sold his collection of rare beer to open a record label. No, he most likely would have been fabulously rich if he had done that. Instead he liquidated some pretty amazing music memorabilia and rare records to fund the startup of Burnt Hickory Brewery, Georgia's 8th craft brewery. In 2012 the beer laws in Georgia weren't exactly conducive to opening a craft brewery. But, like many of us, Scott and team Burnt Hickory sprinkled a heavy dose of ‘fuck it' on their business plan and put the pedal down as hard as they could. This is the story of Scott Hedeen and a little over a decade of Georgia's Burnt Hickory Brewery. Listen in and let him and his story teach you How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery. We wrap up our sermon series on rethinking our lives as we kick off our month-long 321 Serve initiative. All March, we encourage everyone at Burnt Hickory to serve the community and neighborhoods at least three times personally, twice as a family, and once as a LifeGroup. In today's sermon, we look at why we are saved in the first place, and that's to serve others. We see in scripture that Jesus came not to be served as a deserving King but to serve. He is calling us to do the same, to get off the throne of self-advancement and become a servant. In God's kingdom, the standard of greatness is measured in service, not in authority or accomplishment. What are you being called to as a servant? Are you following Jesus in His example of servanthood? What are you excited about as an opportunity for 321 Serve? As always, we'd love to connect with you, answer any questions you've got, and take time to pray with you. Reach out today! It's Christmas Eve at Burnt Hickory, and a perfect time to discover true hope because our Savior Jesus is born unto us. He is Emmanuel, Christ with us. Not just a baby in a manger so long ago, but the true Mesiah sent by the Father for us today. We see in Galatians that in the fullness of time, God sent His son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. He came to be punished and die on our behalf as payment for our sins. He lived the life we should be living, and died the death that we deserve. He came to be buried in a tomb, but praise God, not to stay there forever. He is risen again, defeating death, and Jesus paid our price for sin for all eternity. If we believe in Him as savior, we have eternal life with Him! What good news we have in celebrating Christmas, not just a season of giving and receiving, or being near family, or singing carols and sharing merriment. But in welcoming the gift of Christ into our hearts as our Savior and being brought near to our Heavenly Father, singing of His great and marvelous love for us, and then making Him known to everyone we encounter because He gives us hope. Merry Christmas! This time of year can be incredibly tough for many, with the loss of family or from the pain of trauma remembered or currently present in our lives. It may seem hopeless to celebrate Christmas in the midst of hurt, and maybe you lack joy and peace this season. We want you to know, we are here for you. If you have questions, need prayer, or feel overwhelmed with life, then please reach out today. We would love to hear from you, take time to answer any questions you have and pray with you no matter what you are facing. Today, we look at the aspect of joy in the glory of God through our advent sermon series. We see that when God shows up, His glory exposes us to who we really are, men of unclean lips. His glory also drives out fear and replaces it with true joy and it creates trust and confidence in His promises. God's glory changes out priorities in the routines of our day-to-day life, so that even in the mundane, we can have joy. John 3:17 says that God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. In light of this, we don't live in fear, but in perfect joy through faith in Him. What priorities does your everyday life reflect in fearless and joyful living? Are you placing your trust and confidence in the promises of God? What perspectives do you need to shift to be able to experience the true joy through the glory of God? As always, we'd love to connect with you, take time to pray with you and answer any questions you've got. We encourage you to take the next step in your faith journey, and you can see some that we would love to celebrate along with you by visiting burnthickory.com/next.
In our sermon series around the themes of Advent leading up to Christmas, we explore absolute love this week. God is always faithful and always fulfills His promises. God's love deeply knows all of each of us, from the beginning to the end, and He constantly provides His life-giving power to us. Because of His love, He richly extends His eternal mercy to us and will reward a humble heart. Because He fulfills every promise, we can trust Him with everything in life. Just like Mary did in scripture when she was told about the birth of her son being the Messiah, we should glorify the lord and rejoice in our soul because of God's saving love. Is your faith at a point to where nothing matters more than answering the call of God? Have you set out to glorify yourself or is your soul magnifying the Lord and His saving love? Are you truly believing and placing your faith in the promises of God? If you've got questions or need prayer, we'd love to connect with you, answer any questions you have, and take time to pray with you. Just reach out today! And if you want to take the next step in your faith journey, visit burnthickory.com/next.
We begin the Christmas season with a sermon series diving into the aspects of the advent – hope, joy, love, and peace. This week as we look at the source of our true hope, we see that it comes from a God who has come to earth to be among us. Hope is the expectation of future blessings and the confidence that the best is yet to come. As Christ followers, we can have true hope because Jesus removes our past, reshapes our present, and refocuses our future. Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has come to His people and redeemed them. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant Daved, salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. That's what brings us hope this Christmas – Jesus. If you've got questions about Jesus or want to know more about placing your hope in the finished work of Christ as you call Him savior, then reach out today. We would love to take the time to answer any questions you've got and pray with you. As always, you can take the next step by visiting burnthickory.com/next
