Bryan Orr and Steve Rogers dive deep into measuring power consumption in HVAC blower motors, particularly focusing on the differences between PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) and ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) technologies. The discussion stems from a question raised at an educators' conference about the accuracy of clamp-on meters in measuring blower motor watt draw, as specified in the ACCA Standard 310. Steve shares insights from extensive testing conducted with different types of motors and power meters. The tests compared PSC motors with constant torque and constant airflow ECM motors across various static pressure conditions. One key finding was that two out of three field-available clamp-on meters tested were capable of accurately measuring true power at levels expected in residential blower motors. However, one meter showed significant inaccuracy at low power levels, highlighting the importance of carefully reviewing meter specifications before use. The conversation delves into the concept of power factor and its crucial role in understanding the true power consumption of ECM motors. Steve explains that ECM motors often have a low power factor (around 0.6), which can lead to misconceptions about their efficiency if only the current draw is measured. The discussion emphasizes the need for proper measurement techniques, including simultaneous voltage and current readings with the blower door on, to accurately assess motor efficiency. Key topics covered in the podcast: Differences between PSC and ECM motor technologies Importance of power factor in measuring true power consumption Accuracy of field-available clamp-on meters for power measurement Impact of static pressure on motor performance and efficiency Misconceptions about ECM motor efficiency and longevity Proper measurement techniques for assessing blower motor watt draw Relationship between duct system design and motor efficiency Implications of ACCA Standard 310 for HVAC installations Challenges in comparing constant torque and constant airflow ECM motors The role of control algorithms in ECM motor performance Importance of understanding meter specifications for accurate measurements   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Standard 310 is a technical workflow created by ACCA, ResNet, and ANSI for grading the installation of HVAC systems, typically in new home construction. It plays a crucial role in obtaining Energy Star certification, which can qualify homeowners for tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. The five steps of Standard 310 are design review, duct leakage test, total system airflow, blower fan watt draw, and refrigerant charge verification. In this podcast episode, host Bryan Orr is joined by guests Chris Hughes and Eric Kaiser to discuss Standard 310 and its implications for HVAC contractors. The standard aims to ensure that HVAC systems are installed correctly and operate as designed. The process involves a third-party HERS rater conducting various tests and measurements, which contractors need to be prepared for. Proper duct sealing, airflow settings, and refrigerant charging are critical for passing the assessments. One of the challenging aspects highlighted is the refrigerant charge verification step. The standard requires either non-invasive testing (which has temperature limitations) or weigh-in verification with geotagged photos. Chris Hughes suggests manufacturers could develop more consistent commissioning protocols to streamline this process. Topics covered in the podcast: Overview of Standard 310 and its five steps Importance for Energy Star certification and tax credits Role of HERS raters and HVAC contractors Duct leakage testing and proper sealing Airflow measurement methods Blower fan watt draw challenges Refrigerant charge verification options Need for consistent commissioning protocols Coordination and documentation required Future improvements to the standard   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? On todays show Sarah breaks down the story of John Mitchell Barnett, a 32-year veteran at Boeing, emerged as a whistleblower, shedding light on the company's safety and quality issues, particularly concerning the 787 Dreamliner. His revelations were significant, as they pointed to a culture at Boeing that prioritized profit over safety, a shift that many believe contributed to the crashes of the Boeing 737 Max in 2018 and 2019.      Barnett's story took a grim turn when he was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in a South Carolina parking lot. The circumstances surrounding his death are shrouded in mystery, with some suggesting it was a suicide and others pointing to foul play. Adding to the intrigue, Barnett reportedly told a friend not to believe any reports of his suicide if he was found dead. This statement, coupled with the fact that he was in the midst of a legal battle with Boeing, has fueled speculation about the true nature of his demise.

Nikki Krueger and Genry Garcia return to the podcast to talk about a recent IAQ & dehumidification case study on a vintage home in Miami. The home was very clean but had a musty odor and VOC concerns. You can read the case study in the “Literature” section at https://www.santa-fe-products.com/about-us/media-resources/ or https://hvacrschool.com/case-study.  Blower door tests and ZPD revealed that the home was leaky, and the crawlspace was also not properly encapsulated. The options were to tighten the building and/or mitigate the problem by improving the HVAC system. The homeowners chose to improve the HVAC, which Genry did by installing a ventilating dehumidifier (Santa Fe Ultra98H), reducing system tonnage (3.5 to 2 tons), and putting in new ductwork. One of Genry's key tips to address intermittent moisture issues is to pay attention to fluctuating pressures, not just under the blower door test conditions. Ongoing monitoring is crucial in these studies to measure the home under several different typical conditions. He also relies on blower door tests to determine if encapsulation is necessary or needs improvement, as insulation and encapsulation can bring new issues in their wake.  Extensive testing and working with other contractors (such as home insulators) are the best ways to get a solution that makes the homeowner happy. We need a holistic approach to design to achieve a homeowner's IAQ and comfort goals, not necessarily following strict design guidelines to a T. Nikki, Genry, and Bryan also discuss: Zonal pressure diagnostics (ZPD) Dehumidifier ductwork Dehumidifier selection Attic encapsulation, condensation, and duct leakage MAD AIR The importance of IAQ case studies and the insights we can get from them Effects of insulation Dehumidifier performance in part-load conditions Mechanical equipment design Consulting the ACCA design manuals Maintaining equipment and sustaining positive results   Stay tuned for the companion tech tip. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Summer: Hi doc! I would love your thoughts on calcium hydroxide or pickling lime, mainly for preserving eggs. Hens naturally slow way down in egg production in the winter so I'm looking for ways to preserve our excess farm eggs during the summer to have in the winter. Preserving the raw eggs in pickling lime is one option and I'm just not sure whether it's a good idea or not! Basically you submerge clean, raw, unwashed, day old eggs or freshly layed eggs in a solution of 1 oz lime to 1 quart water in jars or buckets. They are supposed to be good for up to a year and can be used just like a fresh egg. Just a bit skeptical of calcium hydroxide. Thanks for everything!   Patti: Hi, hope all is well. Any connection with calcium supplements & breast cancer? Thank you   Lacey: Diagnosed with early onset osteoporosis. Was only told I need to go on a pill and that still wouldn't fix it. What are lifestyle tips and steps to take to change this diagnosis??   Noreen: Hello Dr Cabral! Thank you for your commitment to health and well being, and for being such a great educator and practitioner. Have enjoyed your podcast for many years. Question - I have not seen you address or review the Terahertz Healing Wand or Blower. I heard about it earlier this year via the Budwig Center, which I follow, and then recently from a distributor. Gather it has been in the states for a few years and coming into use in alternative health care practices. Should your interest and time permit, would love to hear what you think in a future podcast. God's best to you and yours!   Anonymous: Good Morning Dr. Cabral! I recently had a small leak in my waterline (underground in my front yard) that was going one for around 3 months. During this time, I also noticed that the water coming out of my faucets was slightly cloudy and sometimes had a very subtle bad smell (like rotten eggs). I just had the leak identified and repaired, and the water is much clearer and odorless now. I always filter all drinking/cooking water through my Berkey filter, but while the leak was ongoing I was still exposed to certain unfiltered water (i.e. dishwasher, shower, sink, brushing teeth). My main question: is it possible that something leached into the water supply that could have affected my metabolism? During this time, my metabolism slowed a crazy amount (even though same exercise/diet)    Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2753 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Joey Henderson returns to the podcast to talk about heat pumps and inverters. The reversing valve, defrost cycles, and auxiliary heat can cause confusion for people who have primarily worked with furnaces or straight-cool A/C systems. Heat pumps use defrost cycles and bring on the auxiliary heat when the coil is ice-bound, which can present a challenge; we need to maintain cold coils without going into defrost all the time.  Even though heat pumps were significantly less effective in years past, we will still see reduced performance in very cold conditions with the newer inverter-driven systems. Proper design, installation, and commissioning will also help occupants get the best performance out of their heat pumps. Inverters offer plenty of advantages for the cooling aspect of heat pumps, too, especially when it comes to achieving longer runtimes for dehumidification. They can also float their coil temperature, much like how refrigeration systems can use floating suction or head pressure. Condensate assemblies absolutely must be run properly to prevent backed-up drains and other related problems. Liquid line sizing and proper commissioning are also especially crucial for ductless inverter-driven systems. Joey and Bryan also discuss: Heat pump training and the electrification initiative Balance point Defrost strategies and universal defrost boards Dual-fuel systems Heat pump stigmas Blower door testing in various climate zones Surge protection and voltage monitoring How inverters work Occupant lifestyles and latent loads Zoning and duct design for inverter-driven systems Critical charge Line length for ductless systems   Check out Joey's training, social media, and contact information at https://joejoehvac.com/.
