If you don't know who Me First & The Gimmes are by now, then you either have little taste in music and/or a sense of adventure, or you don't listen to music at all.If you have been figuratively touched by these fun loving punk reprobates then you will already know that the band only recently visited these shores on a blitzkrieg tour, and you will also likely not be surprised to hear that everybody's favourite punk covers band are about to board the plane from the U.S of A for a return visit dubbed The Band Of The Long Weekend Tour.Except it goes for more like two weeks.Armed with their latest release - a tribute to the late Billy Thorpe with Most People I Know - Me First & The Gimmes are set to once more decimate Australian crowds, and, according to frontman Spike Slawson, can't wait to experience our good old Australian hospitality once more. With less than seven days to the first Brisbane show on October 30, we start by asking if he is packed and ready to go."Getting there," he smiled. "I always leave it to the last minute, but we're getting there. Preparing ourselves mentally and emotionally and infrastructurally it's always a challenge, but somehow we always make do. And the flight keeps getting shorter and shorter! I think they hit some kind of slipstream or… I dunno."Talk turns to the name of the tour and the fact that Me First & The Gimmes are anything but predictable, both as people and in the sonic realm."We like to put our fans and facilitators at a disadvantage," he joked. "I think it's… it's not a strategic thing as much as it is just a sort of troll. Our shows are an hour and a half long troll and at first we try to set the bar high for ourselves by really alienating our potential allies until the point where they are actually expressing their displeasure audibly. Booing. We like to bring them to about that point before we start to reel them back in. When it really kicked in was recently - two or three years ago - and it was still during lockdown so it was a crazy tour, but we were on a bill with the Violent Femmes and Flogging Molly as well as a band from New York called Thick. All the other bands played originals, or at least mostly originals, so, as with most bands that play originals, they are the heroes of their own stories. They're very earnest, and they're very serious about their music. They may be smiling but it's a serious moment they're sharing with you. Whereas for us, we understood right off the bat that we were the heels of the bill. Just as we are the heels of any bill that we're on. Interestingly enough, the nights when you alienate the crowd the most, those are the nights where you end up selling the most t-shirts. Isn't that funny?"In the full interview, Spike reminisced about their previous performances in Australia and their upcoming return. He expressed his love for classical pop music and punk music, particularly the Ramones and the Buzzcocks, revealing that his band's covers would likely come from outsider pop or weirdo pop, which was prevalent in the 1970s. He also discussed his admiration for the music of the 1970s, despite its sometimes jarring themes. We spoke about support band, Dwarves, and how this coming tour will differ from recent shows, places where Me First & The Gimme Gimmes WOULDN'T play and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersQuinceañera - the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood; the term is also used for the celebrant herself.Sounds like cause to celebrate and an even greater cause to party, which is exactly what Me First And The Gimme Gimmes did when they ‘crashed' the coming-of-age ceremony of a young lady by the name of Madison. Not that anyone should be surprised seeing twenty years earlier the band had done the same thing at Johnny's Bar Mitzvah but as they say, why let somebody else's inhibition spoil what could be a great party for yourself? Not only did the band perform to an unwelcoming audience at said ceremony, they also recorded the set and invite one and all to share the special occasion when they release BLOW IT…AT MADISON'S QUINCEAÑERA! on June 14.HEAVY sat down earlier today with frontman Spike Slawson to find out more details in all of their punk drenched glory. We start by asking if he still gets nervous about impending album releases."Absolutely," he nodded. "It was our first Quinceañera party, and it's intended to be awkward and comic and tragic all at once, and so if it is a success it's likely going to be excruciating and in the moment, if that makes sense. It's very nerve-wracking. We vetted the contestants that won the dubious prize of having us play their Quinceañera party, and we wanted to make sure there were no natural allies in attendance. Nobody that knew who we were or was going to be inclined to liking us or our performance. That was very important to us, and it was the right decision. But when I was about to go out and actually face the crowd, it was… difficult. It was a challenge. But, we had a good time. The crowd eventually turned around. I think we finally played a song from this Millennium and that made a big difference I think."In the full interview, Spike explains what a Quinceañera actually is, opening with Black Sabbath and if, in hindsight, he would have chosen a different song, the in between song banter and keeping the recording authentic, how Madison liked the show, using a horn section for the first time, how he would describe Me First & The Gimme Gimmes to someone who had never heard them before and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Topic Include: What is a quinceañera? MFATGG music wasn't familiar to 15 year old girls Traditional Spanish songs in the album Making the live album at a quinceañera MFATGG is a live band – best way to capture them on record Spike and band enjoys the live awkward moments A nasty email from a disgruntled audience member Dealing with difficult audience members American schlager culture / antagonizing the audience The process of selecting Madison for the quinceañera The family struggled through parts of the show Comparing to MFATGG Ruin Johnny's Bar mitzvah album The quinceañera was filmed, when will we see it? MFATGG hearing back from artists they covered CJ comparing MFATGG to Ramones doing “Acid Eaters” Spike hates the original versions of songs MFATGG play How are the songs selected for a MFATGG project? Nate screws up the “Queen of Hearts” lyrics What other songs would Spike like to cover? They like covering songs that give them negative responses Folding in punk riffs into covers Memories of Steve Soto and Manic Hispanic Will there be more MFATGG albums in the near future? It's been delayed, but IT COULD NOT BE STOPPED. The PhileApocalypse is here!!! The episode where Philena takes over and subjects the OMFYS olds to MORE RECENT FILMS--movies from this century even! Can they take it?!? The answer may surprise you. First, Philena goes easy on the geezers with BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER (1999)--an actual good movie! Is such a thing possible??? Natasha Lyonne is Megan, a cheerleader whose love of Melissa Etheridge and tofu convinces her god-fearing parents (Mink Stole and Bud Cort!) to pack her off to a conversion camp run to get her off the path to obvious lesbianism. Things don't go as planned, however, when Megan meets and falls for Graham (Clea DuVall) at camp. With Cathy Moriarty as the camp commandant, and RuPaul as a camp counselor, and an amazing cast all the way around. (How did we not mention Michelle Williams is in this???) But before Greg, Bob and Cory could get too comfortable, Philena picks SLEEPOVER (2004) for her second feature. Like MIDNIGHT MADNESS (1980) from the first PhilenApocalypse, this is another scavenger hunt movie, only this one has a band of 13-year-old geek girls taking on the cool kids for the best lunch spot in their future high school. The movie is very mid-2000s, so it has an extended sequence in an Old Navy set to "Freeze Frame" by the J. Geils Band, because I guess a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes version wasn't available. The presence of Jeff Garlin as the clueless dad sets off a substantive discussion of the man's lack of talent. In the opening segment, we discuss the uproar in the comments section (for us anyway) over our YouTube video of Philena's reaction over the existence of Andrew "Dice" Clay + Philena recounts a disastrous screening of SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON (2002) at a wagon museum in the pouring rain so the horse didn't even show up. All this plus Bob delivers the X TWITTER REPORT!!! Conversation with bass player Jay Bentley from the legendary band, Bad Religion. Bad Religion has been around for more than 40 years and has been a mainstay in the punk rock scene. Jay Bentley has also been in Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, TSOL, Wasted Youth, Circle Jerks. Could there be a possible sequel to this episode? I have several more questions that within an hour just couldn't be included so hopefully we can have a follow up episode in the next following months. Cheers. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kingrockpodcast/message

When Chris Shiflett left No Use for a Name and joined the Foo Fighters in 1999, he almost had no gear. The band was rehearsing to support their third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, and leader Dave Grohl was doing an inventory check on their newest member. “Dave asked me how many guitars I had, and I said, ‘Well, I have two, but one has a broken headstock,'” recalls Shiflett. “Dave chuckled and said, ‘We gotta get you a few more guitars.'” The duo ventured down to Sunset Boulevard hitting all the guitar shops and Grohl gifted Shifty a pair of Gibsons (that we'll meet later). (This story is even more proof that Grohl is one of the coolest rock stars ever.) “I had been going to some of those Sunset stores since I was a teenager, and they're never nice to you because they know you're not buying anything. So, when I went in there with Dave Grohl and his AmEx card, it was a real moment for me. Here I am joining my dream band, and he's like, get whatever you want … and he really meant it!” Shiflett's gear germination didn't stop there. “When I joined the band, I didn't have any pedals. And now my bandmates constantly make fun of me for the size of my pedalboard—it's ridiculously big and there are a lot of pedals on it—but my view has always been, ‘as long as I don't have to carry it around, bring them all [laughs].'” But they all serve a purpose and allow Chris to stand out in a three-guitar band. “I do love that my role in Foos over the years has become the color guy with all these pedals.” His growth as an artist doesn't stop there. Shiflett's put out punk albums in Jackson United and for nearly 25 years, he sparked endless good times in the best punk-rock cover band (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes). In 2010, he shifted his creative outlet to busting out alt-country twangers and Bakersfield barroom bruisers as Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants, and then, later, solo. Since 2013, he's been hosting a podcast (https://walkingthefloor.com/ (Walking The Floor with Chris Shiflett)) that's featured conversations with https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/mammoth-wvh (Wolfgang Van Halen), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/mike-campbell-rides-again (Mike Campbell), https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/greta-van-fleet-2021 (Greta Van Fleet), https://www.premierguitar.com/rig-rundown-billy-strings (Billy Strings), and recent Rig Rundown subject https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/marcus-king (Marcus King). Where does the dude find the time?! Following Foo Fighter's recent Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at L.A.'s Kia Forum to honor their dearly departed drummer, Shiflett carved out some precious time and invited PG's Chris Kies to the Foo's HQ, Studio 606. The laidback conversation covered his essential live guitars (including a not-so-golden '57 Les Paul and a few gracious gifts from Grohl), some custom Friedmans, and a pair of unusual AC30 stacks that only he and Sir Paul have … and all his pedals that sting, sparkle, shimmer, and sizzle.

Comedian James Hartnett returns to talk Wordle, Licorice Pizza, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. But does he look like Fat Mike?
Spike Slawson along with Me First and the Gimme Gimmes have been putting out records since the late 90s. they take old songs and punk-y-fy them. They take, in my opinion, an ironic and satirical look at popular music and make it digestible to people who would never listen to them in the first place. the best part of a cover band!! This is Spike's 3rd time on the show and it was one of the good ones! Spike is also one of the good ones!! Go See MF&TGG by getting tickets HERE YouTube of Spike in a car!
