It's mind-boggling, isn't it? I'm talking about the rapid advances being made in technology and social media. As parents and youthworkers, it's essential  that we not only keep up with these changes, but that we also develop biblically-faithful strategies for helping our kids and their families navigate the use of these tools in ways that bring glory to God and advance our human flourishing. Knowledge, caution, and wisdom are necessary. That's what we'll address as we chat with Chris Martin about his new book, The Wolf in their Pockets: 13 Ways the Social Internet Threatens the People You Lead, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

In this episode Dave Buehring and Lauri Jarvis of Lionshare shared their experiences of discipling children beyond just the basics. Bible stories are important. They're an essential part of helping children understand the life of Jesus, the heroes of the faith, and who God is. But we have to further than that. A new Barna report finds that to truly prepare our children for faith-filled adulthood, we need to consider reframing "children's ministry" as something closer to "child discipleship."

This week Mike and Sarah talk with singer-songwriter and now author Yancy, about unlocking the power of discipling kids in worship in her new book, Sweet Sound: The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship. STOP just doing songs and START leading worship by making disciples who know what it means to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. No matter our age, each one of us was designed to praise, and for our praise to shift the atmosphere and usher in freedom and deliverance. Our worship is a sacrifice unto the Lord-this includes the praises of children. It's powerful. It's beautiful. It's sweet. Can you imagine children singing out, with their whole hearts, praises to their King? It's quite possibly the sweetest sound you will ever hear! It matters. Jesus himself said, "From the lips of children and infants, you, Lord, have called forth your praise." (Matthew 21:16) This book is full of prophetic, practical, and power-filled truth. It will change the way you view kids worship, as well as your own ability to lead. By using examples from the life of King David, as well as her own personal experiences, Yancy is purposed to empower you to raise up kids who desire to live a life of worship on a daily basis, not only on Sundays. This is about their future. Are you ready to be a part of that? Yancy is a worship leader, songwriter and producer of hundreds of songs that make Jesus loud. Her Dove Award winning music is all the things kids love and everything adults value. She is a powerhouse at leading and teaching kids from birth to preteen how to worship, and creates popular worship resources for churches and homes around the world. Yancy is a passionate advocate of raising disciples to worship. She recently authored the book “Sweet Sound: The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship”. Because of her passion to serve the Church she created “Heartbeat”, a curriculum to teach kids the heart of worship. With a family legacy of children's ministry, her authority and PK perspective help encourage and champion the Kidmin community that the seeds they are planting will reap a harvest that will go on to affect families for generations. Yancy lives with her husband and two sons in Nashville, TN.

Arthur lives in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Liz and dog and cat. He studied student and family ministry at Lancaster Bible college. They walked alongside a lot of kids who were facing significant difficulties and trauma. From this experience he learned that kids from hard places have significant barriers to receiving the gospel. He made a video series called, Trusting the God of the Gospel that helps caregivers and families disciple adopted or foster teenagers.    Arthur and Liz have been in the adoption process for several years now. In anticipation of next week’s show, when my husband Dan will be coming on to share about discipline, I thought this week I would share my own perspective on effective discipline. At the beginning of this episode, I mention a new video series on Divine Mercy from Fr. Chris Alar!! If you don't know much about Divine Mercy, or you want to learn more, check out this free video series at ascensionpress.com/pages/divinemercyvideos (https://ascensionpress.com/pages/divinemercyvideos) I also share feedback from listener Megan who listened to the first forty episodes of Girlfriends through all of Lent. Thank you, Megan! :) Snippet from the Show “What a privilege and honor that our children’s first experience of who God is is through their relationship with us [their parents].” Here are four ideas I have to share – let’s see how Dan’s list compares next week when he comes on! Be clear. Set standards for your kids and expect them to meet them. Follow through. If you set a standard and a child fails to meet that standard, there must be consequences. It’s not personal. Kids are young and immature, and they are figuring out the world. They are going to choose wrongly sometimes, and if we react emotionally, it’s not helpful to any of us. It actually is personal. Invest in healthy, loving relationships with your kids, and discipline will become less necessary, and more effective when you use it. For more detailed shownotes, check out this episode at ascensionpress.com/girlfriends
