Join Karaleigh in an interview with the unstoppable Heidi Wideman. Heidi is a contender and a voice for the voiceless. As a Deaf advocate, Special Needs Mama, Abuse Survivor, and Lipedema Warrior, she coaches others in health, positivity, and life! You'd never know what she's faced, nor what she daily faces because she shows up with energy, light, and a heart for others. Favorite takeaways: 1. Sometimes it's not good or bad- it just is, and it's what we make of it. You've got to take the facts, and it's the emotion you put with the facts that make it good or bad. 2. Health actually has nothing to do with what you look like. Healthy isn't skinny. 3. We have to be a voice for the voiceless, no matter what their struggle is. 4. We need to get rid of the shame and just focus on the health. 5. Express gratitude to the parts of you that you maybe don't love but that deserve love. They have carried and protected you for so long. 6. I love my body. It's not perfect, and nobody said it had to be. 7. You fit in because you feel like you don't belong. Once we do belong, then we are no longer ourselves. We're actually trying to fit in when not fitting in makes us who we are. 8. The only person you can ever be good enough for- the only one who even matters- is you! In August, lawyers representing Jacob Wideman argued before a judge in Arizona that state officials treated him in a “constitutionally impermissible” way when they revoked his parole more than six years ago. Lawyers for the parole board and the state corrections department said Wideman was trying to avoid following directions and therefore could not be trusted to be free. In this update, we fill you in on the hearing and how it could set the stage for further legal action in Wideman's case.
Muscle loss is a common yet preventable part of the aging process. As we age, muscle mass naturally decreases due to a decrease in physical activity and slowed metabolism. This process is known as sarcopenia, and it can have long-term health implications if not addressed. In this article, we'll discuss the importance of muscle, why it's so difficult to build in the first place, and how to prevent age-related muscle loss. The Importance of Muscle Preservation Higher levels of muscle mass offer myriad health benefits. One significant advantage is that muscles act as metabolic powerhouses. They burn calories even when we're at rest, helping to maintain optimal body weight and prevent obesity.Wolfe, RR. "The underappreciated role of muscle in health and disease." The American journal of clinical nutrition 84.3 (2006): 475-482. Muscle tissue also plays a pivotal role in improving insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.Srikanthan, Preethi, and Arun S. Karlamangla. "Relative muscle mass is inversely associated with insulin resistance and prediabetes. Findings from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey." The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 96.9 (2011): 2898-2903. The greater the muscle mass, the more glucose our bodies utilize, reducing the chance of diabetes development. For mobility, muscle mass contributes to better balance and stability, which becomes crucial as we age.Landi, Francesco, et al. "Sarcopenia as the biological substrate of physical frailty." Clinics in geriatric medicine 31.3 (2015): 367-374. This enhanced stability reduces the likelihood of falls and injuries, contributing to a longer and healthier life. Muscles also regulate our body's response to inflammation and infection. A study by Johns Hopkins University found that individuals with solid muscle mass had a stronger immune response.Fiuza-Luces, Carmen, et al. "Exercise is the real polypill." Physiology 28.5 (2013): 330-358. Moreover, preserving muscle mass aids in maintaining mental well-being. Research reveals a strong correlation between muscle strength and improved mood, reduced anxiety, and decreased instances of depression.Gordon, Brett R., et al. "Association of efficacy of resistance exercise training with depressive symptoms meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis of randomized clinical trials." JAMA psychiatry 75.6 (2018): 566-576. So, muscle mass is not just about physical strength and aesthetics but a keystone of our overall health and longevity. Why Is It So Difficult to Build Muscle? Muscle hypertrophy, or the increase in muscle mass, is a complex process that becomes increasingly difficult as we age. This phenomenon is orchestrated by several factors, including hormones, proteins, and our bodies' connective tissues. Testosterone and growth hormone are two crucial players in muscle building. These hormones function like biochemical foremen, directing the construction and repair of muscle tissue. Testosterone promotes protein synthesis, the process by which the body uses dietary protein to build new muscle fibers.West, D. W., & Phillips, S. M. (2012). Associations of exercise-induced hormone profiles and gains in strength and hypertrophy in a large cohort after weight training. European journal of applied physiology, 112(7), 2693-2702. On the other hand, growth hormone stimulates cell growth and regeneration, playing an integral part in muscle repair and recovery.Devesa, J., Almengló, C., & Devesa, P. (2016). Multiple effects of growth hormone in the body: Is it really the hormone for growth?. Clinical medicine insights. Endocrinology and diabetes, 9, Cmed-88159. However, with advancing age, our bodies naturally produce less of these hormones. This reduction results in slower muscle growth and recovery, making muscle building more challenging.Pritzlaff, C. J., Wideman, L., Weltman, J. Y., Abbott, R. D., Gutgesell, M. E., Hartman, M. L., ... & Weltman, A.

In this episode of the Louisiana NOW podcast, we visit with Rev. Fred Wideman. The 2023 Annual Conference of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church witnessed a significant development as efforts were announced to address the void left by churches that have chosen to disaffiliate from the conference. In recent months, a number of churches, including 95 this year and 68 last year, decided to leave the denomination due to resistance to LGBTQ inclusion. One area affected by disaffiliation was Ruston, Louisiana, where two United Methodist churches made the decision to leave the UMC. Grace United Methodist Church found itself nearly divided, with numerous members opting to transfer their membership to the conference while embarking on establishing a new congregation. Recognizing the importance of supporting these individuals, the Louisiana Conference Congregational Development team is actively working with the Ruston group to explore various possibilities, and Rev. Fred Wideman has been appointed as their "shepherd." We discuss what that means and his hope for the future in Ruston and beyond.

Jacob Wideman was arrested at work and brought back to prison for failing to make an appointment with a psychologist on a particular day, as directed by his parole officer. Two months later, he faced the Arizona parole board again. The parole board voted to keep Jake in prison, where he remains, possibly for life. In the final episode of Violation, we discuss what happens now and what Jake's legal options are. And we return to thorny dilemmas about the criminal justice system: When someone commits a terrible crime, as Jake did, is there anything they can do to prove they deserve to be free again? We also return to the question of why Jake killed Eric Kane in 1986. There's one last piece of the puzzle that might bring a little more clarity, and Jake tries to explain it in his own words. Jacob Wideman was released from prison in 2016 after 30 years behind bars and seven hearings in front of the Arizona parole board. You may have heard the term "mass incarceration" — this idea that the U.S. locks up more people than any country in the world. But lately, scholars and activists have also been talking about "mass supervision." There are almost 2 million people in U.S. prisons, but there are almost 4 million people on probation or parole. In Part 5 of Violation, we examine what life is like for the millions of people on parole in the U.S., and describe what happened when Jacob Wideman was on parole. Jake didn't know it when he was first released, but his freedom would only last nine months — and there were people on the outside working to put him back inside. Two years after he murdered Eric Kane, Jacob Wideman was transferred from county jail to the Arizona Department of Corrections to begin serving a life sentence. At 18 years old, Jake was thrust into a world where the only way to feel safe was through physical aggression and bravado. He had many years of practice pretending he wasn't suffering from mental health struggles in his youth, but now, Jake had to push those struggles even further out of sight as he faced a series of challenges in prison, each more difficult than the last. In Part Four of the "Violation" podcast, we follow his decades-long journey through the Arizona prison system and hear how he prepared to tell his life story to the parole board.

What happens at parole boards is a huge part of Jacob Wideman's story — and his story tells us a lot about the parole system in America. After serving 25 years behind bars for killing his summer camp roommate, Eric Kane, Wideman went before a parole board in Arizona for the first time. Starting with his first hearing in 2011, he was denied parole over and over. Except for one time. Part 3 of the "Violation" podcast, examines parole boards, largely secretive institutions that operate in many states with few rules and little oversight. Imagine the worst day of your life, when you did the one thing you are most ashamed of. Now imagine having to convince a panel of strangers — who suspect you might be lying — how sorry you are. After years of preparing for this moment, you get only minutes to make your case. And the stakes couldn't be higher: The rest of your life depends on whether or not the strangers believe you. This is how people seeking parole often describe the experience. Daniel Medwed, a law professor at Northeastern University, describes parole hearings as “a trap for the unwary,” where those who are mentally unprepared for the emotional complexities of the process can find themselves at a grave disadvantage. Every year in the United States, tens of thousands of people appear before parole boards asking to be released from prison. These boards play an outsized role in the criminal justice system — how much time someone actually spends in prison, or in some cases, whether they get out at all, is often decided not by a judge or jury, but by a parole board. And yet, few people understand how they work. Part 3 of Violation examines parole boards, largely secretive institutions that operate in many states with few rules and little oversight. These panels are supposed to be independent, but often do their work under pressure from the politicians who appoint them. In the best of circumstances, parole board members are assigned a virtually impossible task: to predict what human beings they barely know are going to do in the future. And they have people's lives and the public's safety in their hands. What happens at parole boards is a huge part of Jacob Wideman's story, and his story tells us a lot about the parole system in America. After serving 25 years behind bars for killing his summer camp roommate, Eric Kane, Wideman went before a parole board in Arizona for the first time.
