Most of us believe that leadership is not for everyone. Also, very often, we doubt our ability to lead. My guest today challenges these perceptions about leadership through his most recent book. He demonstrates how to harness this doubt, uncertainty, and insecurity to develop into the extraordinary leader you were born to be. He has decades of experience leading organizations and teams. He is the CEO of Concord Leadership Group. His failures and successes compelled him to study leadership for over three decades, culminating in completing a Master's degree in Organizational Leadership and certification as a Franklin Covey Coach. Marc Pitman, a CEO, author, personal & organization leadership expert, coach certification provider, leadership keynote speaker, joins with today's episode of pursuit of learning to share his million worth wisdom and experience on leadership. Starting the conversation, he highlights the significance of focusing on our strengths rather than on what we lack. Also, he describes how his frustration with people not knowing about executive coaching ended up with his recent book - The Surprising Gift of Doubt: Use Uncertainty to Become the Exceptional Leader You Are Meant to Be. Besides his recent publication, he is also the author of Ask Without Fear!, which you can find in several languages, including Dutch, Polish, Spanish, and Mandarin. Marc assists leaders in leading their teams more effectively and with less stress by combining his ongoing education with his own experience. He is also the executive director of TheNonprofitAcademy.com and a former member of Rogare's Advisory Panel; a prestigious international think tank focused on fundraising. We discuss our own experiences with the evolution of leadership and the various forms of leadership during the chat. Throughout the interview, he brings up various topics from his works. Most importantly, he discusses the issue of using predefined templates in coaching rather than developing individualized ways to solve problems. Apart from that, Marc divides leadership into four quadrants and provides an in-depth explanation of each component in a mind-blowing manner. In the latter part of the conversation, we talk about numerous personal assessments, their validity, and the takeaways. Marc's knowledge and enthusiasm captivate audiences worldwide, both in person and through online presentations. As a result, he has garnered attention from various media outlets, including The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Real Simple, SUCCESS Magazine, NBC, Al Jazeera, and Fox News.Resources:Connect with Marc: ConcordLeadershipGroup.com/LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/marcapitman/Instagram: @marcpitmanTwitter: @marcapitmanMentioned in the episode:The Surprising Gift of Doubt: Use Uncertainty to Become the Exceptional Leader You Are Meant to Be: goodreads.com/book/show/56953397-the-surprising-gift-of-doubt?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=Qv57DpA0Cl&rank=1The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America: goodreads.com/book/show/32191706-the-color-of-law?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=J19bcVl6st&rank=1Podcast: By the book: bythebookpod.com/Podcast: From founder to CEO: fromfoundertoceo.com/podcasts/

Donors should never dictate the mission, the mission should define the donor that your organization wants.Nonprofits sometimes suffer from a lack of organization and technical systems because founders don't start a nonprofit thinking about accounting, human resource management or marketing - they started it to relieve pain. Systems need to be in place to keep the good happening sustainably. Part of the toxicity in organizations is that we're constantly looking outside of ourselves for the answers. The benchmark is mediocrity - you don't want to be in that place. Make an inventory of all the things that make you different. Don't cast out your doubt, instead, doubt positively. Shift it from wondering why you're not enough to wondering if perhaps you are exactly what your team needs, or that the things that make you different are exactly what your people need. Living your life reacting to every stimuli that presents itself is exhausting. Take time to pause, and let the situation or unease sit for a while. Let ideas bounce inside your head before reacting. “The gift of doubt is that it can finally push us into looking at other things. Instead of, ‘Why am I messing up so badly?,' or ‘Why am I lacking?' or ‘Why am I so broken?' — allow your doubt to shift the question to: ‘What if I'm exactly the leader that this organization needs?'” — Marc Pitman Reach out to Marc Pitman at:Twitter: http://twitter.com/marcapitmanFacebook: http://facebook.com/askwithoutfearWebsite: https://fundraisingcoach.com/RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/extremefundraisingLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcapitman/ Be more confident, credible & convincing to your board & supporters without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy.Learn to manage your mindset, lead yourself and others more effectively and have the meaningful conversations that drive your most important work. In this episode, my friend Marc Pitman shares how to use uncertainty to become the leader you want to be. Marc and I met at a Love 146 event years ago. As a reminder, Love 146 is a nonprofit I support that provides care for children who have been trafficked and the sales from my book are going to the cause. Marc's most recent book The Surprising Gift of Doubt is for the high-performing leader. We discuss if feelings of doubt and insecurity ever go away and how to manage them, the enneagram and how it ties into feelings of doubt in your work, and Marc's emphasis on nonprofits and how they can help you in your leadership development. The 4 Quadrants of Leadership: Have a lot of confidence to complete a task because they have watched others do it so they copy them -- but their confidence drops when they find that they are not as successful as the person they copied. Feel like they are faking their success and always trying to “fix” a problem although they aren't sure what it is or how to fix it. Learn to grow in their unique identity and do what works best for them so their confidence increases. Help others increase their confidence by “focus leading.” 3 Competencies that Everyone Has: Hardwiring (personality or cognitive) Stories (the way we are programmed) Goal Setting (the way we handle goals) Resources: Buy the book The Surprising Gift of Doubt: Use Uncertainty to Become the Exceptional Leader You Are Meant to Be Marc's website Connect with Mike: https://mikekim.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mikekimtv/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikekimtv Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mikekimtv/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/mikekimtv YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MikeKim *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Mostly, we think of leadership as epitomizing confidence. We lead, therefore we know. But beneath that is a deeper truth, an apparent weakness - vulnerability. It's emotions and that's bad. … try to think of them as a partner." - Marc Pitman Topics Covered: 02:04 - Bringing values and humanity back to business leaders 03:05 - Helping leaders face the challenge of the unknown 05:16 - The map to leadership and the two axis 07:11 - Why feeling doubt is never a moral failing or sign of weakness for leaders 08:20 - How uncertainty and self-doubt help you figure out how you are as an individual and understand others more 10:23 - The two personality assessment tools to help leaders in their goal-setting 12:05 - Looking at the map -- the four quadrants of where you are to help you progress as a leader and as a team 14:23 - Should everybody be open about their doubts and share them widely with people? 16:43 - Permitting yourself to think you're the perfect person in the leadership role Key Takeaways: "Some of the best leaders feel like, they must doubt, is a moral failing or a sign of weakness. And it could be that you need professional help, and there's no stigma in that. There are a lot of places to get help. But it could also be that you're really on the verge of greatness." - Marc Pitman "Knowing that there's a map, figuring out where you are, where's your process on the four quadrants, and then how do you best be in that quadrant? And not try to short circuit your growth." - Marc Pitman "There's strength in vulnerability and being vulnerable. But I would caution leaders to be vulnerable in safe spaces only. Marc Pitman puts a unique twist on that doubt that can often plague leaders, business people, and entrepreneurs. He actually believes that we can use the gift of doubt and uncertainty to step into the role of the leader that we are meant to be. Marc is the author of Ask Without Fear and The Surprising Gift of Doubt. In this conversation, we explore some of the concepts that support Marc's insights behind the gift of doubt. We explore how doubt can be a catalyst that forces us to find and create our own answers. We explore the four quadrants that take us through this process. We also talk about the significance of personality assessments, stories and sources of motivation. Highlights – [02:10] Marc is really excited about having more space, agility and flexibility. He's been responding with more abundance. [03:04] Doubt can invite you to create your own answers. [07:31] Doubt means that we're on the edge of greatness. When we start out with the leader's journey, we may fail trying to copy others and eventually discover our own answers. [10:30] In Marc's book, The Gift of Doubt, he talks about the four quadrants. [11:47] Quadrant one is the confident external quadrant. This is where you model people who you've seen do what you are trying to do. [12:56] Quadrant two is where you start to experiment. A lot of people get stuck in this quadrant, because they don't want to look for internal answers. [15:25] Many people have the answers they need, they just discredit themselves too easily. [17:42] Quadrant three includes some level of vulnerability when realizing where you must go. This is when you step beyond your doubt. Anchoring in. [23:39] Doubt is more self-referential where uncertainty can be externally focused. Leaders know the non-negotiables. [26:39] Quadrant four is where you take internal and external cues and learn to guide people. You have a view of the whole map, and you're able to navigate to where you want to go. [31:38] The influence of personality assessments depends on where you are in your journey. [34:38] Know the strengths of your motivation. [36:41] The stories that you tell yourself and the stories that you feel attracted to can be another angle of motivation for you. [40:20] We learn why writing down our goals, dreams, and desires is a step that we all must take and more in the Rapid Round.
