Have you ever felt like your organization is stuck in the same old fundraising routines, even as the world around us demands more courage and authenticity? I've been there too. That's why my recent conversation with the brilliant Maia McGill hit home—her story of moving from “checking the DEI box” to building truly inclusive philanthropy is both eye-opening and deeply relatable. Maia's journey reminded me of the power (and the risk) of standing “ten toes down” for equity, even when it's uncomfortable. She doesn't sugarcoat the challenges—she's seen organizations retreat or “scrub” their DEI commitments out of fear. But she also shares how real change happens: by centering the voices that matter, budgeting for inclusion, and refusing to let fear drive our decisions. What would it look like if your board meetings and donor relationships reflected the full diversity and lived experiences of your community?
In this episode of the Intentional Fundraiser podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with David Kravinchuk to talk about why philanthropy is so important for everyone. We also chatted about the upcoming Western Canada Fundraising Conference, and I loved hearing David describe what makes it so unique—from its warm, intimate community feel to the practical, hands-on sessions attendees can look forward to.David introduced me to the idea of the "slow fundraising movement," which is inspired by the slow food movement. He explained how taking time to build deeper relationships and communicate thoughtfully with donors can really transform our fundraising efforts. As we talked, we explored how the world of fundraising is evolving, and why it's so crucial to focus on building lasting, meaningful connections with donors instead of just chasing numbers. We also discussed the impact of community-driven fundraising and why embracing a more intentional approach—one that includes self-care and prioritizes genuine relationships—can make such a difference. It was such an inspiring conversation, and I hope it encourages you to slow down, connect more deeply, and truly appreciate the people who make our work possible.Guest: David Kravinchuk, Philanthropy Firebrand, The Common Good fundraising agencyResources: Show notes, links, and resources mentioned in this episode.Review my show: Please review my show. Ever wondered why donors leave faster than we can acquire them?
Ever felt like you're wearing a mask in your fundraising role? I have. In my recent chat with Mallory Erickson, we pulled back the curtain on the real struggles and triumphs of nonprofit professionals. From battling burnout to embracing alignment, we dove deep into the heart of what makes fundraising both challenging and rewarding. Mallory shared several practical strategies that we can implement immediately:Cultivate curiosity: When faced with resistance or fear, get curious about where those feelings are coming from. This can help create space for new possibilities.Acknowledge discomfort: Recognize that feeling uncomfortable is normal in fundraising. Not all discomfort is bad – sometimes it's a sign we're growing or staying true to our values.Focus on removing barriers: Instead of always trying to add new strategies, look at what's holding you back and work on removing those obstacles.Prioritize and focus: Mallory shared how she grew fundraising by 10 times in six months by focusing intensely on one area (corporate partnerships) rather than trying to do everything at once. What if I told you that your fundraising fears are not only normal but could be the key to unlocking your potential?Listen to this juicy episode and then share it with everyone. I had a bit of a revelation recently. I was talking to Justin Yaassoub, a man who knows a thing or two about leadership. It was one of those conversations that make you sit up and take notice. Justin went from a military background to the world of consulting and coaching, but not before experiencing a pivotal moment during a 300-kilometer canoe trip. Waking up cold, wet, and probably a tad miserable after a downpour, he saw one of his peers greet the day with unbridled positivity. That was a game-changer, a moment that embodied the power of controlling emotions and turning seemingly worst-case scenarios into positive experiences. A lesson about empathy, courage, and self-sacrifice that's stuck with him ever since. Now, Justin is using that perspective to shape his leadership philosophy. He's all about authenticity, consistent behavior toward staff, and most importantly, setting conditions for their success, and ultimately, the success of the organization. And he's got a lot to share. On The Intentional Fundraiser podcast, Justin shared some invaluable insights that can really shift the way you look at leadership. He talked about the profound impact of passion, empathy, courage, and self-sacrifice on leadership and reaching the zenith of perfection. He discussed the significance of self-awareness and inculcating healthy self-competition for enhancing personal growth and development. He also stressed how leading change with passion and a deep-seated sense of empathy can stir up powerful transformation and forge connections. But that's not all.He talked about the pivotal role of empathy and connection in leading effectively, underscoring that every endeavor boils down to human connection and how empathy fuels action and bravery. Especially in the not-for-profit sector, authenticity, and empathy are crucial. Justin's rich insights and unique approach to leadership might just be the catalyst you need to embrace your passion, embody empathy, and muster the courage to be an integral part of your leadership journey.RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODEThe Intelligent Conversationalist: 31 Cheat Sheets That Will Show You How to Talk to Anyone About Anything, Anytime by Imogen Lloyd WebberWestern Canada Fundraising ConferenceTony MyersCONNECT WITH OUR GUEST ONLINELinkedin / Website / EmailRATE, REVIEW & FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCASTS “I love Tammy and The Intentional Fundraiser Podcast”
