On this episode Kat is joined by Paul Evans, CEO of Carlisle Support Services, who shares his fascinating story of how he went from a working-class lad in Sheffield, starting out as a security officer opening and closing doors to leading a 5,000-person organisation. And why he's a better CEO than he used to be. KEY TAKEAWAYS The world is a challenging place and it's become more challenging over the last few years. Therefore, caring for people working in many kinds of environments is the biggest thing that me and my team must make sure of, from a wellbeing perspective. As the senior team, we have to make sure we've set the business up correctly to look after people, both from a health and safety perspective but equally from a wellbeing and mental health perspective, which has become more important over the last few years. As we've gone from 1,600 employees – that we call our family members – to 5,000, one of the biggest things has been making sure everybody cares for everybody. From the CEO downwards I've wanted to get a philosophy that runs through the business around looking after people. One of the measures in place is that anyone can ring/email the CEO to create a family feel, like ringing your parents or grandparents to talk about things. Now we're bigger I can't be everywhere, I have to protect my own mental health as well. As a leader it isn't possible for me to visit and speak personally to all of our 5,000+ family members. We've done a lot around organisational structures with roles and hierarchies to make sure that managers can get on and manage and the strategic element can still be strategic. The aspect of driving your business can cross over into your personal life. Make sure you check in with yourself and your family to make sure of what you're doing it for, what's the purpose of it in terms of heading in the right way, are you on track, are you taking time out. BEST MOMENTS “I was brought up with the philosophy of you get out of life what you put into it.” “You learn so much more as a CEO being on the ground than you do in a boardroom.” “We're all getting older; you've got to look after yourself. You only get one mind and one body; you don't get a second chance.” “There are sacrifices I've made for being successful but, equally, they've had some real impact outside of work on me as a person.” ABOUT THE GUEST Paul Evans is CEO of Carlisle Support Services, has overseen the transformation of the business. With a career spanning the last two decades in the facilities management sector, and having worked his way up from the front-line, he is passionate about making sure the business strategy remains aligned to its employee-led and customer-centric values. In addition, Paul is also the Vice Chair of the United Kingdom Crowd Management Association (UKCMA) and was previously Co-Chair of the Living Wage Foundation Recognised Service Provider's Leadership Group, and an Executive Officer of the National Association of Healthcare Security (NAHS) from 2020-23. LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

Food is one of the essential things humans need to live. With high-quality and safe food, you can never go wrong in doing a food business. However, with challenges such as inflation, companies cut the cost of their expenses, impacting the quality of their food. And if the product does not make consumers happy, they won't buy it, and the sales will decrease. Therefore, finding the right balance of the cost without impacting the quality is the key. No matter what happens, prioritize the joy of the people consuming your products. Bryan Armentrout is the founder of The Food Leadership Group, a firm specializing in helping food companies deliver safe and high-quality food products. Bryan is also the author of the book “The New Manager Mindset: How to Master the Four Secrets of Leadership that College Doesn't Teach You.” Today, Bryan will talk about the importance of maintaining the quality of the products, ensuring safety in food, the problems food companies face today, the potential of artificial intelligence in the food industry, and more. Your customers are not merely purchasing your products or services. They're buying into your brand's story and its purpose. This is where the power of storytelling comes into play. Karen Eber of Eber Leadership Group joins us to discuss the profound impact of storytelling on customer engagement, relationships, and the long-term success of your business.About Karen Eber:Karen Eber is a thought leader, leadership consultant, author, keynote speaker, and, above all, an exceptional storyteller. She's currently serving as the CEO and Chief Storyteller at Eber Leadership Group, a consulting group helping companies build leaders, teams, and culture through the power of storytelling.Karen's collaborated with some big names in the corporate world, such as General Electric, Facebook, Kraft Heinz, Kate Spade, and Microsoft. In addition, she has served as a guest lecturer at esteemed institutions, including the London School of Business, MIT, and Stanford. Her Ted Talk ‘How your brain responds to stories & why they are critical for Leaders' has almost 2 million views and counting. On top of that, Karen has a new exciting project going on - her book "The Perfect Story: How to Tell Stories That Inform, Influence, and Inspire" that just came out! Episode highlights: When it comes to the power of storytelling, there's a romanticized notion among entrepreneurs of having a special origin story for your business. However, the reality is often totally different. There's never only one story but a series of specific moments in your customers' lives that connect them with your business. So, it's essential to address their main concerns and pain points so that your narrative resonates deeply with them and eventually engages them to engage with your company. (05:58) To leverage the power of storytelling in business, go beyond your origin story. Instead, tell your customer's story, focus on their pain points, and solve their burning issues, one story at a time. This will help you build a strong connection with your audience, ultimately creating a loyal customer base, which is crucial to your overall success. (07:32) What matters most in storytelling for business is that you continuously dial into your audience's evolving needs and aspirations. You can use social media, ChatGPT, or direct interactions to keep up with their pain points. This will give you a good insight into their actions and motivations so that you craft narratives that truly resonate with them. (12:21) When crafting your brand's narrative, start by getting a broad understanding of your audience before narrowing it down to specific interests. This approach will allow you to understand them better and also determine how your business can solve their issues. In the long run, it'll help you create a relatable brand story and build lasting relationships with your customers. (14:13) Storytelling isn't a one-off tool or a quick fix. It's a skill and resource to work on consistently and systematically throughout your entrepreneurial journey. It helps you create magnetic stories that draw people in and connect with them on a deeper level. This makes them more than just customers but loyal advocates of your business. (17:48) Focus on the main priority and big-picture stuff when crafting your brand story. But also remember that storytelling is flexible, so be free to drill down on your stories as time goes by to refine your approach. This lets you engage with your audience in real time and attune to their ever-evolving needs. (19:30) Karen's best advice for entrepreneurs:“That's why storytelling is so key for as an entrepreneur. You have these opportunities to just connect to all of these thoughts, fears, hopes, aspirations, and that's where you are grabbing people. And you know you're doing it well when people say, ‘I feel like you wrote that just for me.'” (09:13)Connect with Karen: LinkedIn Twitter Instagram Resources Mentioned: Karen's Ted Talk about why stories are crucial for leaders The Perfect Story: How to Tell Stories that Inform, Influence, and Inspire Karen Eber Website Follow Beyond 8 Figures: Linkedin Twitter Website

This week's incredible guest – Mike Ettore – knows the way, and shows the way. Being the exceptional leader that he is, Mike became the youngest Drill Instructor in the Marine Corps at the age of 20. There's not a personal or professional challenge he can't overcome. Mike's effective combat leadership style resulted in numerous awards and decorations during his career, including the Bronze Star Medal for Valor (with Gold Star denoting 2nd award) and the Combat Action Ribbon (with two Gold Stars denoting 2nd and 3rd awards). These days, his purpose is to teach, coach, and help leaders develop - while he's alive and after he's gone. In this episode you will hear: I graduated from my first recruit platoon when I was 20. The Marine Corps trusted me and I tried very hard to live up to that trust. I spent my whole career trying to live up to the legacy of the Marines in World War I. If there's something the Marine Corps does well is it teaches and honors its history and traditions. We were considered by the battalion commander, to be the strongest lieutenant/staff sergeant team in the battalion. It's all about trust I was more excited about being an equally good leader in business as I was in the Marine Corps. Pre 9-11, I was dragging an AR-15 in a case through the airport. I was a C-level officer in charge of most of the back office of the non-sales function for a billion-dollar company, with no expertise in any of it. I wasn't really sure how to save a file. I teach and coach senior executives in the art & science of leadership. I'm 65 years old and have unlimited energy. I just love it. At 65 years old, with over 45 years of teaching leadership, I still learn something every week. I ask myself: ”How in the hell have I gone this long and never heard that?” I am vain enough that to think that 25, 50, 80 years from now - if somebody picks my book up, the Iwo Jima lessons, the Grenada lessons, and the business lesson I've learned, just might help out my great, great-grandson or daughter, who never met me. [In life] I was mostly right, somewhat wrong, or completely full of shit [Conversation with son] just because it comes out of my mouth doesn't automatically mean that it's bullshit. As you get older, you're gonna find yourself becoming me. Dale Carnegie: “A man who dies rich dies disgraced.” I'm never gonna have Andrew Carnegie money, but I've got a laptop and a thumb drive. Everything that's up here [in my head] is gonna be out.
