This week, An Garda Síochána have made an unprecedented move by releasing nearly 100 images to the public, to try and identify those suspected of committing crimes during the Dublin Riots. The images released have already helped to identify multiple suspects, but it hasn't come without controversy, with many questioning the morality and legality of such a bold move. Does it set a worrying precedent for Irish policing, or was it indeed justified? Host: Fionnán Sheahan, Guests; Robin Schiller and Carlo Salizzo See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Thursday 23rd November, a 49-year-old Irish citizen, originally from Algeria but who had lived in Ireland for 20 years, committed a heinous knife attack on children at a primary school in Parnell Square East in Dublin.Quickly, far-right and anti-migrant activists and agitators turned to social media, spreading a range of misinformation about the attack, including that the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant.Within hours Dublin was ablaze, as rioters set police cars, buses and a tram alight and looted shops, causing over an estimated €10 million of damage. But how did this happen? Is the Irish far-right larger and stronger than previously thought? And how do antifascists and Irish society more broadly respond to such a violent outburst? To discuss this, and events in Dublin in more detail, we welcome the historian and author, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, onto the podcast.N.B. - During the course of the podcast, "The Diggers" are mentioned at one point. Then comedian Russell Brand tackled the subject on his online show, touching on the same themes and coming down heavily on Ireland's proposed new hate speech laws. Is the far right set for political gains in Ireland like those in other European countries? We also examine claims that in less than an hour after the horrific stabbing on Parnell Square, there were online calls from prominent figures within the anti-immigration movement to get people into the city centre “to fight back”. Could the Gardai have seen this and acted sooner? Host: Fionnán Sheahan Guests: Aoife Gallagher & John Dowling See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Calm's been restored in Ireland's capital after a stabbing last week led to unrest. Three young children were among five people taken to hospital after a knife attack in Dublin, which sparked riots in the city centre. Thirty-four people have been arrested. Europe correspondent Gavin Grey told Tim Dower that officials are blaming far-right agitators for the clashes. He says it's thought an Irish citizen, originally from North Africa, might be the person in connection with the stabbing - but that's not yet confirmed.   LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
