Despite over a hundred deadly acts by far-right militants since the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, and the far right's attempts to obstruct transfer of power to a duly elected president on January 6, the FBI continues to deprioritize investigations into white supremacist violence, instead targeting marginalized groups such as environmentalists and Black Lives Matter. In 2005, for example, the FBI labeled eco-terrorists as the top domestic threat, despite not a single fatal attack in the United States. We spend this hour in conversation with author and former FBI agent Mike German about his research and insights into organized far-right extremism. —- Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Far-Right Extremism & White Supremacy w/ Mike German appeared first on KPFA.
This week Chris and Jason read and discussed a paper Chris wrote for a strategic studies project about neo-Nazi terror networks and their links to far-right militias in Ukraine. The influx of foreign fighters to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion of 2022 has outpaced US intel and law enforcement agencies' ability to monitor potential radicals going to and coming from Ukraine. Far-right extremists have been drawn to the conflict in Ukraine since 2014 due to affiliated organizations that belong to a web of loosely related violent neo-fascist organizations. Several affiliated extremists have been apprehended planning terror attacks and other acts of violence. From February 15, 2023: The Jan. 6 committee's final report on the insurrection is over 800 pages, including the footnotes. But there's still new information coming out about the committee's findings and its work.Last week, we brought you an interview with Dean Jackson, one of the staffers who worked on the Jan. 6 committee's investigation into the role of social media in the insurrection. Today, we're featuring a conversation with Jacob Glick, who served as investigative counsel on the committee and is currently a policy counsel at Georgetown's Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection. His work in the Jan. 6 investigation focused on social media and far-right extremism. Lawfare senior editor Quinta Jurecic spoke with Jacob about what the investigation showed him about the forces that led to Jan. 6, how he understands the threat still posed by extremism, and what it was like interviewing Twitter whistleblowers and members of far-right groups who stormed the Capitol. You can read Jacob's Lawfare article here, his essay with Mary McCord on countering extremism here in Just Security, and an interview with him and his Jan. 6 committee colleagues here at Tech Policy Press. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. They discuss the unsettling question of what far-right extremism, with its proponents feeling emboldened and legitimized by Donald Trump's election, might look like during his second term in office. Jacob helps unpack how these movements are evolving, the risks they pose to democratic institutions, and what the next four years might hold for these groups in terms of recruitment, violence, and public visibility of their hateful worldview. In this episode of the International Risk Podcast, host Dominic Bowen speaks with Julia Ebner, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and leader of the Violent Extremism Lab at the University of Oxford. As one of the foremost experts in extremism and radicalisation, Julia shares insights from her decade-long research, including her remarkable undercover investigations into various extremist groups. The conversation explores the alarming trend of extremist ideologies moving from the fringes into mainstream politics and culture, as detailed in Julia's 2023 book "Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over." She discusses how the global polycrisis - from COVID-19 to economic uncertainties and ongoing conflicts - has created fertile ground for extremist recruitment and radicalisation.Julia provides fascinating insights into the psychology of extremism, particularly the concept of "identity fusion" and the symbiotic relationship between different extremist groups. She shares her unique perspective on researching male-dominated extremist spaces as a woman and discusses the challenges of countering online radicalisation in an era of increasing social media influence.Drawing from recent events, including the Austrian regional elections and the Capitol riots, the discussion examines how extremist ideas are increasingly penetrating mainstream political discourse and the implications this has for democratic societies. The episode concludes with a thoughtful analysis of emerging extremist risks and potential strategies for addressing them at policy, technological, and societal levels.Interested in exploring the topics discussed in this episode? Dive deeper into the topics explored with Julia Ebner's books referenced in the episode:Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists (2020) An immersive investigation into extremist groups, based on Ebner's experiences infiltrating various radical organizations online and offline. The Rage: The Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism (2017) A groundbreaking analysis examining the symbiotic relationship between Islamist and far-right extremism, showing how these movements feed off each other's narratives.Going Mainstream: How extremists are taking over (2023) From radicalisation on gaming platforms to algorithmic extremism, this book reveals how fringe movements are strategically infiltrating public discourse and reshaping modern politics. The International Risk Podcast is a weekly podcast for senior executives, board members, and risk advisors. As an investigative journalist, Julia Ebner had the freedom to do something she freely admits that as an academic (the hat she currently wears as postdoctoral researcher at the Calleva Centre for Evolution and Human Sciences at the University of Oxford) she have been proscribed from doing - posing as a recruit to study violent extremist groups. That, as you might expect, gave her special insight into how these groups attract new blood, and on the basis of that work, as well as more traditional research for groups such as the Quilliam Foundation and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, she has been hosted by the United Nations, national legislators, intelligence agencies and Big Tech. In this Social Science Bites podcast, Ebner details some of the mechanics of her undercover research for host David Edmonds before discussing the prevalence and characteristics of violent extremist groups. Given the variety of ways governments tally these groups and the groups' own amorphousness in an online age, determining whether such groups are on the rise - which seems to be a perennial fear - proves devilishly difficult to determine. "I would say," Ebner concedes, "it often comes and goes in waves, but now we are seeing a very strong wave of very young people, including minors, radicalizing towards violence." That radicalization proves remarkably similar regardless of ideology, Ebner notes. Plus, it's not straightforward determining who might be open to recruitment. "Based on my research, I would say that everyone is potentially susceptible to radicalization, especially in vulnerable moments in our lives, and everyone has them." Ebner serves up that potential universality in a different context to close the podcast. It's what keeps her up at night: "I think the mainstreaming of some of the extreme concepts and ideas and language that I used to observe only in the darkest corners of the internet, but that is now being heard in parliaments, that is now being seen in large social media channels of influencers or voiced by politicians." Given her journalistic chops, it is no surprise that Ebner has written extensively on extremism in a series of well received books. The Rage: The Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism, received the Bruno Kreisky Award for the Political Book of the Year 2018; Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists was a Telegraph Book of the Year 2020 and Germany publishing's Wissenschaftsbuch des Jahres 2020 ("Science Book of the Year") Prise as well as the Dr Caspar Einem Prize from the Association of Social Democratic Academics; and Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over, was published in 2023.

What do Nazis, fascists, incels, skinheads, misogynists, insurrectionists and Proud Boys all have in common? Many of them confide in reporter Elle Reeve. It was around 2015 and Reeve was reporting for Vice News about the rise of the “alt right,” a term coined by its leader, Richard Spencer. She spent time on internet message boards like 4chan and 8chan where far right activists communicated, trolled liberals, and began to coalesce as a movement. These were often ordinary people who increasingly embraced conspiracy theories and violence. This was during the presidency of Barack Obama, when many people were imagining that the U.S. was in the glow of a “post-racial” era. Reeve knew better. “Racism wasn't dying off with an older generation,” she told the Vermont Conversation. “There was a strong beating heart right there on the internet.”In 2017, Reeve was there when the alt right burst out of obscure Internet chat rooms and into public consciousness in a violent attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her documentary account, “Charlottesville: Race and Terror,” earned her and Vice News Tonight a Peabody Award, four Emmys and a George Polk Award. In 2019, Reeve became a correspondent for CNN, where she works today. She was at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 reporting on the attack on Congress by Trump supporters, many of whom she knew well. Why do they talk to her? “They want to tell their story, they want to confess, they want to unburden themselves,” she said.Reeve has a new book, “Black Pill: How I Witnessed the Darkest Corners of the Internet Come to Life, Poison Society, and Capture American Politics.” The title refers to how far right activists speak of taking the “black pill” of nihilism to justify their cruelty and violence. “It's this dark nihilism that the world is doomed. There's nothing you can do to change it, and you at best, can hope for it to collapse.”Reeve traces how far-right rhetoric has moved from the fringes to the mainstream, with Donald Trump and J.D. Vance channeling extremist ideas and language.Vance has denounced the “woke ideology” of “white women who are miserable about their own lives, enforcing codes about racial justice, gay rights on other people to make other people miserable, to account for how miserable they are in their own lives,” Reeve explained.Vance's use of the term “childless cat ladies” is another far right meme. “I've read that on 4chan six or seven years ago,” said Reeve. “It has trickled upward.”Another far right notion that is now embraced by mainstream Republicans is that diversity is bad. “They think that racial and ethnic and gender diversity makes us weaker. It makes us fools. This is just something that they ridiculed all the time.”Reeve explained the far right context of Trump's attacks on people of color. “If a white person commits a crime in their world, it's because they're a bad guy. But if a Black person commits a crime in their world, it's because they're Black.” Reeve warned that many people “are vulnerable to those ideas. I just interviewed a ton of people at a Trump boat parade. They were so nice to me, and then they started talking to me about how it's not right to eat people's cats, and these people do animal sacrifice, and they're dirty and they bring disease.” “It's not all crazy people who believe this stuff. It's regular people and your neighbors," said Reeve. “You have an obligation to push back against that, whether or not they'll listen to you." Reeve said about the future, “There has been an escalating radicalization among the Republican elite and a softening among the voters… People speak freely about civil war. That is dangerous.” “I don't like it but I don't know where that balance ends up after the election. You can't do something like Jan. 6 without a feeling that there's an army behind you of supporters who will back you up.”

In the run-up to the November elections, Republicans and Democrats in the United States are once again arguing over the right to access firearms. About This Episode In this insightful episode, Jen and I trace her father's complex journey through the rabbit hole pf conservative mass media and his eventual return. Guided by the profound insight that “we don't see things as they are, we see things as we are”, we utilize theories as lenses to interpret and understand new phenomena. We also discuss approaches proposed by Steve Hassan and Jim Stewartson, and how the complexities of radicalization and deradicalization might necessitate a broader spectrum of perspectives. (Jan 29, 2024) People have downloaded NCPR's podcast about far-right extremism in the North Country about 75,000 times so far. A conversation with hosts Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch about what they found and questions they still have. Also: The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has reached a settlement with Monsanto over toxic chemicals that were dumped near Akwesasne in the 1970s.
(Jan 25, 2024) As part of our podcast on far-right extremism, If All Else Fails, we talk to New York's top security official, Jackie Bray. She explains why law enforcement and military involvement in the far-right is a threat, and why the far-left is not nearly as much of a security concern.
Driving around rural areas of the Northeast, it's not uncommon to see an occasional home or vehicle displaying a Confederate battle flag. Look closer, and you might find symbols of far right groups like the Proud Boys or the Three Percenters, both classified as hate groups.Reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch decided to dig further. They spent months investigating the reach of the far right movement in rural upstate New York. They found law enforcement officers who are members of the extremist “constitutional sheriffs” movement who vow that they will not enforce state laws with which they disagree. These include laws relating to gun rights and public health. And they found a man who went to prison for participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and anticipates a military takeover during the 2024 election and a third world war.Russell and Hirsch also crisscrossed the district represented by Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY. Stefanik has amplified far right views, such as the white supremacist Great Replacement Theory and the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen. Stefanik is frequently mentioned as a potential vice presidential running mate for Donald Trump in the 2024 election. This investigation into the far right extremist movement in upstate New York is the subject of a remarkable five-part podcast from North Country Public Radio called “If All Else Fails,” which is hosted by Russell and Hirsch. This Vermont Conversation includes the first episode of If All Else Fails, broadcast by permission of North Country Public Radio, followed by a conversation with reporters Emily Russell and Zach Hirsch.“As we saw on Jan. 6, it only took a couple thousand people to suspend our democratic process for hours and force an evacuation from the Capitol,” Russell told the Vermont Conversation.“Even if folks who have gone down these rabbit holes may be a minority in this country, if you get enough of them riled up, they can do a tremendous amount of damage to our democracy in the U.S.,” Russell said.

What does it mean to be on the extreme political right? How is Aristotle considered a historical right-wing figure? What is the connection between conservatism and nostalgia? These are just some of the questions answered by Matt McManus, lecturer of political science at University of Michigan and author of "The Political Right and Equality: Turning Back the Tide of Egalitarian Modernity." He breaks down concepts such as how the right is unified by a hostility toward equality, reactionary politics, and the rise of fascism. We also discuss why Trump is the figure-head of the right wing movement in America but is not considered an intellectual, and who, then, is considered the intellectuals of the right wing movement in America and abroad. We then talk about why fascists believe there is a superior authority and what is required ideologically to make their arbitrary hierarchy function. All this and more in this week's episode.

I discuss the epic cultural clash between Piscean Age and Aquarian Age values and how it is manifesting in the current militant movements that aim to forcibly impose theocracy on societies, particularly the USA. I also demonstrate how such movements are fundamentally illiberal and undemocratic as well as untenable. This episode was published on December 22, 2023 at 3:21pm EDT.Astrological dates mentioned herein are calculated using the Eastern Daylight time zone. Joy leads this episode of The ReidOut with a troubling sign of the rise of far-right extremists being elected around the world, as anti-Islamic populist Geert Wilders is newly elected in the Netherlands. Joy and her panel of experts discuss his win plus the global tug-of-war between liberalism and ultra-nationalism, as many question the future of democracy. Plus, as eleven more hostages were freed Monday from Hamas, we learn more about who the Palestinian hostages were who were freed from Israeli control, and why they were incarcerated to begin with. Plus, Joy sits down with candidate for U.S. Senate Hill Harper, who says he was offered money to drop out of his race and run against Representative Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American member of Congress. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.
William Crawley is joined by guests on Talkback, discussing the violent events which took place in Dublin City Centre and if far right extremism sentiments are growing in Ireland.
On this week's episode, we have an extended interview with author and researcher, Julia Ebner. Julia is a Senior Resident Research Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and has written a series of books exploring the social dynamics of extremist networks, including The Rage: the Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism, Going Dark: the Secret Social Lives of Extremists, and most recently Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over.Julia also recently completed her DPhil at Oxford's Centre for Studies of Social Cohesion and has been developing novel linguistic analyses to help identify the psychological indicators of violence in extremist material and manifestos. She has also endured publishing some papers with our resident cognitive anthropologist. In the podcast, we cover a range of topics from the factors impacting radicalisation, Julia's time working for Maajid Nawaz's organisation, the psychology of conspiracy theories, and her experiences as an undercover investigator. Also on this week's episode, we dive into a recent episode of the DarkHorse to explore the Alex Jones' level conspiracies that Bret and Heather have recently been promoting about the horrific events in Israel. You might imagine it would be difficult to make such a tragic event about COVID dissidents and vaccines but if so you are underestimating the InfoHorse hosts. For a palette cleanser enjoy an extended review-of-reviews and some marathon shoutouts.LinksThe Guardian: The Big Idea- is it too late to stop extremism taking over politics?Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists | Julia Ebner | Talks at GoogleJulia's Recent Book- Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking OverRegressive Left Media: Tommy Robinson and Maajid Nawaz: Sleeping with the EnemyBad Stats thread with DarkHorse clips from episode 195Andy Last's Beyond Synth PodcastDTG Shedding Light on the DarkHorse: A Mini ReviewEbner, J., Kavanagh, C., & Whitehouse, H. The Jan. You can read Jacob's essay with Mary McCord on countering extremism here in Just Security and listen to an interview with Jacob and his Jan. 6 committee colleagues here at Tech Policy Press.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
