Editor Joe Walker takes us behind the scenes of the sci-fi epic, Dune: Part Two, and its Oscar-winning predecessor. In collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve, Walker shares how they worked together to balance intimate character moments with grand world-building and action, using his specialty in sound to create immersive environments and emotional depth. While Dune: Part One focused on introducing characters and setting the stage, Dune: Part Two adopted a faster pace to depict the main character Paul Atreides' transformative journey. Despite extensive planning, and even a dedicated "worm unit," Walker highlights how Villeneuve and the team embraced spontaneity when better creative opportunities revealed themselves, especially for intimate or ad-libbed scenes, creating one of the greatest sci-fi sagas of our time. “In most genre fiction where heroes and villains clash, the hero is intrinsically reactive. The villain starts making trouble and that's the beginning of the story. If the villain had never showed up, the hero would have lived a pleasant and unremarkable life and had a lovely time. And nothing novel-worthy would have popped up. But the villain comes along and does something terrible and that makes heroic action necessary. So if that's the function of the hero in the story, to be called to heroic action, then the first conflict that's readily available to you is reluctance or a sense of being unworthy… and then after that, the hero will be called to take on a new shape and often that will be in response to the shape of the danger, in response to the shape of the wickedness a foot,” says Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Jon Spaihts, about the classic hero-villain relationship in Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, based on the books by Frank Herbert. In this episode, Jon Spaihts talks about the importance of hand-to-hand combat in mythic storytelling, his favorite scene in Dune 2, and we do a deep dive into his most adored character, Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson. We explore the nature of her mystical powers and why she's so feared by the men in the story. Spaihts also shares his advice about what it really means to get personal with your writing. “When people say to make your story personal, they don't really mean look at yourself. You are the least qualified person to say something meaningful about yourself. What people are really talking about is that you should focus on the things that obsess you. You can look at the things that are most plangent to your feelings, that are most itchy and sticky for your intellect, the things you can't stop thinking about. You can focus on the experiences that have impacted you most profoundly. Those things – the things that push on you and pull on you – that is personal storytelling. You look not at yourself, you look at the things that have moved you, that have affected you, that have changed you, redirected your life and the things that preoccupy you. Those are your seeds of personal storytelling,” says Spaihts. To hear more about writing Dune 1 and 2, listen to the podcast.

Today, we'll be analyzing Dune: Part One, the 2021 film adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic 1965 novel. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, renowned director of Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and Sicario, this movie tells roughly the first half of the story. It is filmed to the brim with great filmmaking to break down and is without question one of our favorite films of the last five years.
"MY DESERT. MY ARRAKIS. MY DUNE."Onto the next hundred tracks, and what better way to start off than a two-parter? Frank Herbert's Dune is considered to not only be one of the best sci-fi novels of all time, but one of the most influential pieces of storytelling, influencing the likes of Star Wars and countless others. For many years, Hollywood has tried and failed to bring this deconstruction of the hero's journey to the big screen, until Denis Villeneuve took a gamble in adapting the first half before going on to the rest. The first chapter of his take on the classic novel hit theaters to mass acclaim and success, but does the film still hold up -- both on its own and now with its second half? Come join Brian and Alec to find out as they journey into Arrakis with DUNE: PART ONE!
Wiz RECOMMENDS Dune: Part Two Dune: Part Two shares a lot of the same strengths and issues with Dune: Part One. Both parts have excellent visuals, music and sound design throughout the film. Both have excellent performances: Part One's stalwarts Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson are just as good in Part Two, but also have a good performance by Zendaya and an excellent performance by Austin Butler. But the issues remain the same: both plot and characters don't seem very deep, save for Paul And Lady Jessica. One of the key parts of the movie that needed depth, the romance between Chani and Paul, seem to just happen very quickly, leaving the romance feel pretty empty. But even after six hours of story, the totality of the Dune films still feel unsatisfying. Part of is is because, like Part One, the story isn't finished. The other is simply that Paul is a good character, but just not a captivating one. And yet, I do want more Dune, which is why I'm interested in the Dune: Prophecy MAX series coming in November. But it isn't a lock tight interest in the overarching plot like some other film series: it's more of a "this is good, so why not?" kind of feeling.

WARNING! THIS EPISODE CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS FOR DUNE: PART TWO (2024) WARNING! linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This May is “Summer Camp Edition” at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, Kyle and Trevor will be reviewing summer camp themed movies. This week, we pull double duty and review both Tom McLoughlin's, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), AND Denis Villeneuve's, Dune: Part Two (2024)! The sixth entry in the classic slasher franchise, Tom McLoughlin's, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) represents a major transition point in the series. Featuring the return of Jason Voorhees (after his disappointing absence in Part V), the introduction of supernatural elements to the Voorhees lore, and a campier, more playful tone, Part VI is often regarded as one of the more creative and memorable sequels in the franchise. Denis Villeneuve's, Dune: Part Two (2024) is the epic sequel to the director's previous Dune: Part One (2021), with both films comprising the events of Frank Herbert's legendary sci-fi novel. While by no means a “summer camp” film, Kyle found himself too bored by Friday the 13th Part VI to devote an entire podcast to, so throughout the episode he and Trevor occasionally pivot to discussing/reviewing Dune: Part Two.Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinema Follow us on Twitter @CatchingCinema Like, share, subscribe, and we'll catch you next time!
Rich Nelson and Catrin Lowe (Don't You Want Me? podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Catrin's choice Oasis: Supersonic. Oasis: Supersonic (2016) is a documentary charting the almost overnight success of Oasis in the mid 1990s. Directed by Mat (Spike Island) Whitecross it stars the brothers Gallagher, Noel and Liam respectively as they reflect on their ascent to mega stardom and record breaking double gigs at Knebworth in 1996. In classic documentary style we start with the Gallagher's growing up in Manchester and hear from Peggy Gallagher. We follow their quick rise to fame and the release of Definitely Maybe and hear their tales of rock n roll debauchery. Recommendability scores for Oasis: Supersonic were pretty high, its mix of 1990s nostalgia and the hilarious Gallagher's make it an easy watch even for a casual Oasis fan. Strong scores across the other categories gives Oasis: Supersonic a solid overall rating of 3.99. James III (Black Men Can't Jump [In Hollywood] podcast) and William (Bill) DeMeritt (actor and writer) join Flixwatcher to review James' choice Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) is the fifth instalment in the Jurassic Park film series. Directed by J. A. (The Impossible) Bayona, Fallen Kingdom sees Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong, and Jeff Goldblum reprise their roles from the previous films. Dinosaurs are facing extinction (again) due to volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Goldblum) testifies that the dinosaurs should be left to perish. However, John Hammond's former partner Sir Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) has other ideas and wants to clone the remaining dinosaurs under the guise of rescuing them. Cue Claire (Dallas Howard) recruiting former Velociraptor trainer Grady (Pratt) to help capture the last surviving Velociraptor. As with all the Jurassic Park films, wherever there are dinosaurs, things never go to plan. Despite there being more dinosaurs and more action Fallen Kingdom fails to match or even come close to being as good as Jurassic Park. Recommendability scores for Fallen Kingdom were not very high. Repeat viewing scores were helped a little by James having seen it five times at the cinema and slightly higher engagement scores give an overall rating of 3.34. Paul Costello and Emma Kathryn from The Yearbook Committee Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Paul's choice Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Glass Onion (2022) is a standalone sequel to Knives Out written and directed by Rian (Brick) Johnson. Daniel Craig reprises his role as detective Benoit Blanc. This mystery sees Blanc joining a group of “Disruptors” on a private Greek island for a murder mystery weekend hosted by Miles Bron (Edward Norton), a Elon Musk type tech bro and founder of Alpha. His guests include model-turned-fashion designer Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), the governor of Connecticut Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn) and her assistant, video game streamer Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) and his girlfriend and co-founder of Alpha and Miles's ex-business partner Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe). As with Knives Out, Glass Onion takes the classic murder mystery genre, throws in several red herrings and is full of fun and enjoyable performances from the ensemble cast. While not quite as intriguing and original as Knives Out, but still fun, Glass Onion still scores high on recommendability and engagement to score 4.23 overall [supsystic-tables id=357] Episode #343 Crew Links Thanks to the Episode # 343 Crew of Paul Costello (@)PaulCinephile) and Emma Kathryn from The Yearbook Committee Podcast Please make sure you give them some love More about Glass Onion For more info on Glass Onion can visit Glass Onion IMDB page here or Glass Onion Rotten Tomatoes page here. In their interview Mark and Kevin talk about: How Kickstarter has completely upended (in a good way), Kevin's book release strategies Kevin's first novel coming out in 1988 and all the various publishers he has worked with over the years The "Perfect Storm" that was brewing in the book industry when indie publishing became a realistic and viable option Starting to publish his own books (mostly backlist titles he got the rights back to) in 2009 after founding WordFire Press with his wife Rebecca Moesta Kevin's belief that this is the best time to be a writer How Kevin does a little bit of everything. That he can do this via Kickstarter is a significant paradigm shift How Kickstarter can replace the old "advance" model from traditional publishing The special thing Kevin is doing for all the backers of this latest Kickstarter The Kickstarter will be going live on April 30th for 3 weeks and 2 days And more . . . Frank Herbert's original 1965 story, DUNE, was an astounding success. It has become one of America's great novels, and is beloved by science fiction fans. Most certainly apt to fit in with the space opera subset of speculative fiction, the book has been once again recently turned into a two part film series starting with director Denis Villeneuve's first in the pair DUNE: PART ONE (2021). Now he's back with the second, DUNE: PART TWO, that has been one of 2024's biggest successes. Rather than discuss the intricacies of the story, the movie stars an all-star cast. Timothee Chalamet plays the lead role of Paul Atreides who may or may not be a promised messianic hero. Also in the cast is Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, among many others.DUNE: PART TWO (2024) received glowing reviews from critics. With its theatrical success, Warner Brothers appears to have green lit the second book in Frank Herbert's series DUNE: MESSIAH. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and gives their thoughts.
On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic the guys talk Dune Part 1. But first why does Jake want a new job. Have any of us read the book? What is in Denis Villeneuve filmography? How packed is this cast? How influential is this science fiction novel? What did Cody and Jake think of the 80's movie? What makes Cody lick his lips? How do we think of Paul/Timothee? How cool is The Voice? Are some of the names silly? Why aren't there robots in this universe? How did the Hunter Seeker work? Did we like the movie on first watch? Who are we in the movie? What is Spice? Is Anthony having visions? Is Cody being Autismal? Was the scene when Leto Atredes attempts to kill The Baron dope? Is Paul Lukewarm Skywalker? What summons the Sandworms? What did Cody say to get Anthony to unlock his Voice? Is Christopher Walken any different as the Emperor? What is the difference between Shai-Halud and the Sandworms? Does Kong x Godzilla sound good? Are those movies going the Transformers route? Is Optimus Kong Dudley Kong's twin? Are the Dune of podcasts? Find out on the newest episode of Comics and Chronic! For the rest of this early release, watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/GGRttrVLkso The full audio episode will release the morning of Tuesday, March 12 Much like Paul Muad'Dib, YOU get to have an "early look" at our newest episode on Dune: Part Two. Put on your stillsuits and join David, Jam, and Maddy as they hitch a ride on the cinematic epic, Dune: Part Two. Much like Part One, This long-awaited film is rich in visual spectacle, narrative complexity, and theological discussion. While Paul's similarities to Christ seem to be on the surface, a deeper look under the sand causes us to ask: is Muad'Dib the promised Lisan al-Gaib, or merely a human manipulation? Kelsi and Trey explore the universe of 'Dune' and what makes Denis Villeneuve's ambitious past decade of blockbuster filmmaking legendary. We discuss what makes 'Dune: Part Two' an epic in scope and scale, but how it might lack the intimacy and political caution of 'Part One'. After our reaction to 'Part Two' we deep dive 'Dune: Part One' for over 3 hours on Patreon! Among thoughts on the movie's multifaceted political commentary on religion, white savior deconstructions, and the semi-successful subversive use of stereotypes, we ask essential questions like: Is Austin Butler into Timothée Chalamet more than Zendaya? For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks, Giovanni Lago & Daniel Howat. Today, we are reviewing the latest film from Denis Villeneuve, "Dune: Part Two," starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Souheila Yacoub, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling & Javier Bardem. Continuing after 2021's Oscar-winning "Dune" (or "Dune: Part One"), the second half of the story brings Frank Herbert's classic 1965 sci-fi novel to life in a way many thought we would never see. Shot on a grand scale, with massive production value, and shown on the largest screens in the world in IMAX, it has kicked off 2024 with a bang as the movie event of the year so far. Such an epic film deserves an epic review, and that's what we're here to give you in our SPOILER-FILLED conversation where we discuss Villeneuve's directing, adaptation of the source material, the performances, the craftsmanship, its awards season chances, and more. Thank you for listening, as always. We hope you enjoy it! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... We're feeling especially spicy with an extra-long Friday episode of Breakfast All Day. Alonso and Christy have an early, spoiler-free review of "Dune: Part Two," which has IMAX sneaks on Sunday night before opening everywhere March 1. It's an astonishing achievement -- even more so than Denis Villeneuve's 2021 "Dune: Part One" -- and you must experience it on the biggest screen you can find with the best possible sound. We also review the messy comedy "Drive-Away Dolls," which finds Ethan Coen directing for the first time without brother Joel. Of course, we couldn't miss "Tyler Perry's Mea Culpa," since we're completists of the auteur. Perry's homage to steamy erotic thrillers of the '90s is streaming on Netflix. As always on Fridays, we begin with Movie News Live!, which includes a look ahead to the weekend's Spirit Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. And for our Patreon subscribers, a recap of this week's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," which follows Truman on a magical day in Manhattan with the formidable James Baldwin.
