Do you know what the best part of this movie finally releasing is? I NEVER have to see the awful trailer for this movie in front of other films again! A Minecraft Movie has dropped in theaters worldwide and I had the immense "pleasure" of seeing it earlier today. Was it good? Well, what do you think? I definitely had a Minecraft phase when I was younger, but that was over ten years ago and I have not cared much for the game since then. I've always known that making a movie out of it is a dumb idea because the game doesn't exactly lend itself to narrative features. There's a reason there's only been ONE of these games. So, how did the film turn out? “In most genre fiction where heroes and villains clash, the hero is intrinsically reactive. The villain starts making trouble and that's the beginning of the story. If the villain had never showed up, the hero would have lived a pleasant and unremarkable life and had a lovely time. And nothing novel-worthy would have popped up. But the villain comes along and does something terrible and that makes heroic action necessary. So if that's the function of the hero in the story, to be called to heroic action, then the first conflict that's readily available to you is reluctance or a sense of being unworthy… and then after that, the hero will be called to take on a new shape and often that will be in response to the shape of the danger, in response to the shape of the wickedness a foot,” says Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Jon Spaihts, about the classic hero-villain relationship in Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, based on the books by Frank Herbert.  In this episode, Jon Spaihts talks about the importance of hand-to-hand combat in mythic storytelling, his favorite scene in Dune 2, and we do a deep dive into his most adored character, Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson. We explore the nature of her mystical powers and why she's so feared by the men in the story.  Spaihts also shares his advice about what it really means to get personal with your writing.  “When people say to make your story personal, they don't really mean look at yourself. You are the least qualified person to say something meaningful about yourself. What people are really talking about is that you should focus on the things that obsess you. You can look at the things that are most plangent to your feelings, that are most itchy and sticky for your intellect, the things you can't stop thinking about. You can focus on the experiences that have impacted you most profoundly. Those things – the things that push on you and pull on you – that is personal storytelling. You look not at yourself, you look at the things that have moved you, that have affected you, that have changed you, redirected your life and the things that preoccupy you. Those are your seeds of personal storytelling,” says Spaihts. To hear more about writing Dune 1 and 2, listen to the podcast.

Dorian Price and Mark Radulich present our Prometheus 2012 Movie Review!Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. The film features an ensemble cast including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. Set in the late 21st century, the film centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures. Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species.Scott and director James Cameron developed ideas for a film that would serve as a prequel to Scott's science-fiction horror film Alien (1979). In 2002, the development of Alien vs. Predator (2004) took precedence, and the project remained dormant until 2009 when Scott again showed interest. Spaihts wrote a script for a prequel to the events of the Alien films, but Scott opted for a different direction to avoid repeating cues from those films. In late 2010, Lindelof joined the project to rewrite Spaihts's script, and he and Scott developed a story that precedes the story of Alien but is not directly connected to the original series. According to Scott, although the film shares "strands of Alien's DNA," and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus explores its own mythology and ideas.Prometheus entered production in April 2010, with extensive design phases during which the technology and creatures that the film required were developed. Principal photography began in March 2011, with an estimated $120–130 million budget. The film was shot using 3D cameras throughout, almost entirely on practical sets, and on location in England, Iceland, Scotland, Jordan, and Spain. It was promoted with a marketing campaign that included viral activities on the web. Three videos featuring the film's leading actors in character, which expanded on elements of the fictional universe, were released and met with a generally positive reception and awards.Prometheus was released on June 1, 2012, in the United Kingdom and on June 8, 2012, in North America. The film earned generally positive reviews, receiving praise for the designs, production values, and cast performances, but was criticized for its uneven script and unresolved plot points. The film grossed over $403 million worldwide. A sequel, Alien: Covenant, was released in May 2017.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Dune: Part Two is a 2024 American epic science fiction film produced by Legendary Pictures, directed by Denis Villeneuve (who co-produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts), and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The sequel to Dune (2021), it is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. It follows Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem reprise their roles from the first film, with Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub joining the ensemble cast. Development began after Legendary Pictures acquired film and television rights for Dune in 2016. Villeneuve signed on as director for the film in 2017, with the intention of making a two-part adaptation of the novel due to its complexity. Production contracts were only secured for a first film, with the second film having to be green-lit based on the first's success. Though Villeneuve was concerned about the sequel's certainty after the first film had a simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release, Warner Bros. Pictures assured him the sequel would happen if it performed well on HBO Max. After the critical and commercial success of the first film, Warner Bros. and Legendary green-lit Dune: Part Two in October 2021. Most of the new cast members were announced in 2022. Principal photography took place in Budapest, Italy, Jordan and Abu Dhabi between July and December 2022. pWotD Episode 2498: Dune (2021 film) Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 266,929 views on Monday, 4 March 2024 our article of the day is Dune (2021 film).Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed and co-produced by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. The film is the third adaptation of Dune, following David Lynch's 1984 film and John Harrison's 2000 television miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and television rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. Production contracts were secured only for the first film, relying on its success before a sequel would be produced. Principal photography took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.Dune was scheduled for a late 2020 release but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, before its international release on September 15; it was then released in United States theaters and streaming on HBO Max on October 22. Dune was a box office success, grossing almost $435 million on a $165 million budget. It was well received by critics and audiences with praise for Villeneuve's direction, screenplay, the visual effects, ambition, costume design, Hans Zimmer's musical score, cinematography, and faithfulness to the source material. The film won six awards at the 94th Academy Awards and was nominated in four other categories, including Best Picture, in addition to receiving numerous other accolades. A sequel, Dune: Part Two, was released in March 2024. In February 2024, Villeneuve said the script for the production of a third part was "almost finished".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:28 UTC on Tuesday, 5 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dune (2021 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ruth Neural.

Casting Choices: Some viewers find certain actors, particularly the young leads, to be well-cast and embody the characters’ personalities effectively. Negatives: Pacing and Storytelling Choices: Some critics found the pacing of the first season to be slow and felt the show condensed plot points from the original series, potentially hindering character development and impacting the overall story flow. Deviation from the Source Material: While some viewers appreciate the show’s attempt to adapt the story for a live-action format, others felt certain changes to the narrative or character arcs were unnecessary and took away from the essence of the original. Budget The budget for the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix is reported to be $15 million per episode. This means the entire first season, consisting of eight episodes, reportedly cost $120 million to produce. Dune: Part 2 (2024) Out of 10 Why Did Lady Jessica Go Full Super-Villains Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary Picking up after the events of the first film, Paul Atreides seeks refuge with the Fremen, the indigenous people of the harsh desert planet Arrakis. He continues to develop his prophetic visions and abilities, while also forming a bond with Chani, a young Fremen warrior. Meanwhile, the Harkonnens, House Atreides’s bitter rivals, remain in control of Arrakis and continue to exploit its valuable resource, spice. Paul grapples with the weight of his destiny and the potential for a violent future. He must navigate complex alliances and face difficult choices as he ponders the potential consequences of his actions. The film explores themes of revenge, destiny, and the struggle for power. It delves deeper into the intricate world-building of Frank Herbert’s original novel, introducing new characters and factions. Cast and Crew Director: Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Main Cast: – Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, the young heir who embraces his destiny among the Fremen. – Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, the Fremen warrior who becomes Paul’s love interest. – Rebecca Ferguson is back as Lady Jessica, Paul’s Bene Gesserit mother. – Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the leader of the Sietch Tabr Fremen tribe. – Josh Brolin portrays Gurney Halleck, Paul’s loyal warrior mentor. New additions to the cast include: – Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the cunning nephew of Baron Harkonnen. – Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the Emperor’s daughter with a complex role to play. – Christopher Walken joins the cast in an undisclosed role. – Léa Seydoux as Lady Fenring. Other notable crew members: – Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, building upon the unique soundscape established in the first film. – Greig Fraser serves as the cinematographer, capturing the vast landscapes and intricate details of Arrakis. Dune: Part Two – Production and Budget Production: – Development for Dune: Part Two began after Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and television rights for Dune in 2016. – Director Denis Villeneuve signed on in 2017 with the intention of making a two-part adaptation due to the novel’s complexity. – Originally, production contracts were only secured for the first film. The green light for the sequel depended on the first film’s success. – Despite Villeneuve’s concerns about the sequel’s green light due to the first film’s hybrid release (theatrical and HBO Max), it received the go-ahead, allowing them to move forward. – Filming for Dune: Part Two took place primarily in Jordan, Italy, and Hungary, with additional locations utilized as needed. Budget: – The estimated budget for Dune: Part Two is $190 million, which is significantly higher than the first film’s $165 million budget. – This increased cost can be attributed to several factors, including: – Expanding the scope of the story and world-building compared to the first film. – Bringing in new and established actors with higher salaries. – Creating complex visual effects and sets to bring the fictional universe to life. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined Netflix's live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War,” marking another attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen. Spaihts, who is best known for his work on “Dune” and “Doctor Strange,” will adapt one of gaming's richest and most acclaimed video game sagas with over 40 million copies sold. The “Gears of War” franchise centers on a society divided and on the brink of collapse, facing total extinction by the monstrous Locust alien race. The ragtag Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity's last stand. Netflix's partnership with The Coalition aims to first adapt the game into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow. Spaihts is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves “Gears of War,” according to The Coalition. Previous attempts to adapt the game have been unsuccessful. Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, but no other moves were made on that project. With Netflix's hiring of Spaihts, “Gears of War” fans have much to look forward to given the screenwriter's wealth of experience adapting major genre IP. Source: Variety

Where to begin describing today's guest and his lengthy list of accomplishments? Eric Roth is the Academy Award-winning writer responsible for films like Forrest Gump,  The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and 2018's A Star Is Born. At 77-years-old, Eric is as potent a storytelling force as ever: last year, he delivered a sci-fi epic so huge, you'd have had to have buried your head pretty deep in the sand of a distant sand planet named Arrakis to have missed it. Dune, co-written with director Denis Villeneuve and previous Script Apart guest Jon Spaihts, achieved the impossible. It translated one of the densest, most complex and widely beloved science-fiction novels of all-time into a thrilling blockbuster spectacle that somehow remained true to its source material. Timothée Chalamet starred as Paul Atreides, young prince of the noble House Atreides, as an intergalactic battle erupts over control of the deadly, inhospitable desert planet. Author Frank Herbert wrote the book as a warning about society's tendencies to “give over every decision-making capacity” to a charismatic leader. Eric, Jon and Denis did a terrific job threading that insight into a “chosen one” story that challenges and interrogates that narrative template. For many, the film felt like the moment that theatrical cinema felt “back” after the closures of the pandemic. In a captivating conversation recorded earlier this year, Eric told us all about how the film's towering sense of scale was achieved, how the opening he originally envisioned for the movie would have bankrupted the entire production and what keeps him hungry after all these years. Next on the docket for Eric is a collaboration with Martin Scorsese, penning the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon. There's no slowing down for this veritable titan of the screenwriting universe. This episode contains spoilers for Dune.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This May is “Masterclass Revisited” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, we'll be revisiting the subjects of Masterclass months we've done over the years to review films that may have slipped through the cracks. This week we're wrapping up our Masterclass of the Alien franchise with long overdue review of Ridley Scott's, Prometheus (2012)! Written by Jon Spaihts, and later tailored and refined by Damon Lindelof, Prometheus serves as a both a prequel to Alien (1979) as well as director's Scott's long awaited return to the franchise. An enthusiastic effort from Ridley Scott, Prometheus boasts the director's trademark heady themes and large scale visual flair, however on occasion it's split parentage between 2 very distinct writer's voices can be felt across it's streamlined 124 minute run time. Beginning life (on the page) as a straight up prequel and direct lead in to Scott's own Alien (1979), later drafts of the screenplay, and indeed the final film version of Prometheus would see the narrative lean harder into exploring the Engineers and the human races' connection to them. Hiccups and vagaries in the screenplay aside, Prometheus is a mesmerizing visual experience, possessed of some truly astounding production design and 3D cinematography, as well as some show stopping sequences of tension and violence that rank very high not just among Scott's illustrious filmography, but all of sci-fi horror cinema. While an enjoyable experience in isolation, Prometheus is not an especially strong prequel to the Alien franchise as a whole, however from this author's perspective, the film serves as a wonderful introduction to Michael Fassbender's character of David, who in turn goes on to become a compelling throughline to Ridley Scott's, Alien: Covenant (2017). Not quite a masterpiece, Prometheus currently stands as the (exceedingly handsome) black sheep of the Alien series, however should a satisfying concluding chapter of it and the character of David's narrative eventually be made, it very well could find it's significance in the franchise canon promoted by leaps and bounds. A decade before his recent Oscar nomination for his work on Denis Villeneuve's Dune,  Jon Spaihts co-wrote Prometheus – a bold prequel to the Alien franchise that celebrates its tenth anniversary this month.  It was a philosophical sci-fi horror odyssey like no other, that upended expectations and made the New Yorker one of Hollywood's go-to names for science fiction drama that both provokes and thrills. You might know Jon as the man who co-wrote the first Doctor Strange movie along Scott Derrickson and past Script Apart guest C. Robert Cargill. He's also shepherded his own sci-fi worlds to the screen, such as Passengers – a Jennifer Lawrence-starring romance among the stars that hit cinemas in 2016. Prometheus was his introduction to the world, however. He'd written a couple of impressive spec scripts that got him into rooms with high-powered Hollywood directors. Ridley Scott was one of them. As you'll discover in this episode, the idea of an Alien prequel was kind of sprung on him. In an instant, he blurted out an idea for an epic that took the franchise and its mythology in a bold new direction, switching up the series' visceral frights for grand existential contemplation and freaky robots. In this fascinating conversation, Jon delves into about his original draft for the film, titled Alien: Engineers. It followed roughly the same beats as Prometheus but with a few notable exceptions. For starters, Engineers made the bold move of suggesting that Jesus Christ was an alien, and therefore related to the Xenomorph of the first movie. It also had a different ending that set up a planned trilogy of movies with these characters, which Jon explains in detail.  You might also want to listen out for Jon's pitch for a Star Wars series – one of the few sci-fi sandboxes he's not had a chance to play in yet…This is a spoiler-filled conversation – in space, no can you hear you scream that we ruined the plot for you.
