The story follows Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who awakens aboard an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. Plot In the near future, middle school teacher and former molecular biologist Ryland Grace wakes up from an induced coma on the interstellar spacecraft Hail Mary, suffering from amnesia. Grace learns that he is the sole survivor of a three-person crew that was traveling towards the Tau Ceti system, 11.9 light-years from Earth. In a series of flashbacks, Grace recalls that scientists discovered a "Petrova line" of infrared light stretching from the Sun to Venus; an alien microbe in the line, dubbed "astrophage", was proliferating on the Sun's surface, dimming the Sun at a rate that would cause catastrophic global cooling within thirty years. The head of the Petrova Taskforce, Eva Stratt, recruited Grace to study it due to his background in speculative astrobiology. Grace experimented on a sample and discovered that astrophage was composed of unicellular organisms that absorb electromagnetic radiation from the Sun and expel it for propulsion. Grace joined Stratt's Project Hail Mary, an international "long-shot" mission to send a crewed spacecraft to Tau Ceti, the only star in Earth's solar neighborhood not occluded by astrophage. The flight to Tau Ceti would be a suicide mission, as the ship could only carry enough fuel for a one-way trip; any findings would have to return to Earth in smaller space probes. In the present, Grace encounters an alien spacecraft that docks with the Hail Mary. It is made of a solid form of xenon, which Grace dubs "xenonite". The ship's occupant is a rock-like, five-legged alien from Erid, a planet in the 40 Eridani A system. Grace names the alien "Rocky", deduces that Eridians "see" via echolocation, and creates a machine translation system to interpret Rocky's musical language into English. Rocky is a mechanical engineer and the sole survivor of the Eridians' mission to save their own star from astrophage infection. Grace and Rocky agree to work together, and become close friends. As neither can survive in the other's atmosphere, Rocky works aboard the Hail Mary inside a pressurized ball of xenonite. Rocky theorizes that microbial organisms in Adrian's atmosphere are consuming the astrophage, keeping the population in check. Learning that Grace cannot return home, Rocky offers to share some of his own ship's astrophage fuel with the Hail Mary. Grace remembers that an astrophage explosion killed the original crew's science officers. With no time to train replacements, Stratt asked Grace to join the mission. During a risky maneuver to gather the astrophage predator from Adrian's atmosphere, a fuel leak causes the Hail Mary to spin uncontrollably, rendering Grace unconscious. Rocky breaks out of his ball to save Grace but is severely injured. While Rocky recovers, Grace studies the captured astrophage predator, dubbing it "taumoeba"[b] and selectively breeding it to survive the nitrogen in Venus's atmosphere. Rocky revives, and the two celebrate their success; Grace recalls that he fearfully refused to join the Hail Mary crew, but Stratt had him drugged and put aboard the ship anyway, believing he was the only one capable of completing the mission. Rocky and Grace say their goodbyes and begin their journeys back home. Shortly thereafter, Grace discovers that the taumoeba has evolved to escape its xenonite breeding tanks and is starting to consume Hail Mary's astrophage fuel. Grace stops the taumoeba leak, but realizes that Rocky's ship, being entirely made of xenonite, will have no way to contain the taumoeba; it will eat all of Rocky's fuel, stranding him and dooming Erid. Grace decides to use his remaining fuel to rescue Rocky and the Eridians rather than return home, and sends his video logs and taumoeba samples to Earth via the probes. Stratt and her team receive the probes and use the taumoeba to cure the Sun's astrophage infection. Meanwhile, on Erid, Grace lives in an Earth-like biodome the Eridians have constructed for him. Rocky informs him that Eridian scientists can prepare the Hail Mary for the return voyage to Earth. Grace ponders the news before beginning another day of teaching science to eager Eridian children. The film features an ensemble cast including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. Set in the late 21st century, the film centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures. Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species.Scott and director James Cameron developed ideas for a film that would serve as a prequel to Scott's science-fiction horror film Alien (1979). In 2002, the development of Alien vs. Predator (2004) took precedence, and the project remained dormant until 2009 when Scott again showed interest. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing DUNE: PART TWO (2024), from Frank Herbert's 1965 novel.  This film has a screenplay by  Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts and is directed by  Denis Villeneuve.  In the second part of this adaptation of Herbert's Dune, Paul Atredis (Timothée Chalamet) struggles with the possibility that to defeat the Harkonnen, he may need to become something far more terrible.  The film clocks in at 2 h and 46 m, is rated PG-13 and can be found streaming currently on Max. Pictures. The sequel to Dune (2021), it is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. It follows Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined Netflix's live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War,” marking another attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen. Spaihts, who is best known for his work on “Dune” and “Doctor Strange,” will adapt one of gaming's richest and most acclaimed video game sagas with over 40 million copies sold. The “Gears of War” franchise centers on a society divided and on the brink of collapse, facing total extinction by the monstrous Locust alien race. The ragtag Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity's last stand. Netflix's partnership with The Coalition aims to first adapt the game into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow. Spaihts is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves “Gears of War,” according to The Coalition. Previous attempts to adapt the game have been unsuccessful. Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, but no other moves were made on that project. With Netflix's hiring of Spaihts, “Gears of War” fans have much to look forward to given the screenwriter's wealth of experience adapting major genre IP. Source: Variety

Prometheus is a 2012 Science Fiction Horror film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, with music by Marc Streitenfeld. Where to begin describing today's guest and his lengthy list of accomplishments? Eric Roth is the Academy Award-winning writer responsible for films like Forrest Gump,  The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and 2018's A Star Is Born. At 77-years-old, Eric is as potent a storytelling force as ever: last year, he delivered a sci-fi epic so huge, you'd have had to have buried your head pretty deep in the sand of a distant sand planet named Arrakis to have missed it. Dune, co-written with director Denis Villeneuve and previous Script Apart guest Jon Spaihts, achieved the impossible. It translated one of the densest, most complex and widely beloved science-fiction novels of all-time into a thrilling blockbuster spectacle that somehow remained true to its source material. Timothée Chalamet starred as Paul Atreides, young prince of the noble House Atreides, as an intergalactic battle erupts over control of the deadly, inhospitable desert planet. Author Frank Herbert wrote the book as a warning about society's tendencies to “give over every decision-making capacity” to a charismatic leader. Eric, Jon and Denis did a terrific job threading that insight into a “chosen one” story that challenges and interrogates that narrative template. For many, the film felt like the moment that theatrical cinema felt “back” after the closures of the pandemic. In a captivating conversation recorded earlier this year, Eric told us all about how the film's towering sense of scale was achieved, how the opening he originally envisioned for the movie would have bankrupted the entire production and what keeps him hungry after all these years. Next on the docket for Eric is a collaboration with Martin Scorsese, penning the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon. Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, primarily covering the first half of the book. Set in the far future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

All month long, we'll be revisiting the subjects of Masterclass months we've done over the years to review films that may have slipped through the cracks. This week we're wrapping up our Masterclass of the Alien franchise with long overdue review of Ridley Scott's, Prometheus (2012)! Written by Jon Spaihts, and later tailored and refined by Damon Lindelof, Prometheus serves as a both a prequel to Alien (1979) as well as director's Scott's long awaited return to the franchise. An enthusiastic effort from Ridley Scott, Prometheus boasts the director's trademark heady themes and large scale visual flair, however on occasion it's split parentage between 2 very distinct writer's voices can be felt across it's streamlined 124 minute run time. Beginning life (on the page) as a straight up prequel and direct lead in to Scott's own Alien (1979), later drafts of the screenplay, and indeed the final film version of Prometheus would see the narrative lean harder into exploring the Engineers and the human races' connection to them. Hiccups and vagaries in the screenplay aside, Prometheus is a mesmerizing visual experience, possessed of some truly astounding production design and 3D cinematography, as well as some show stopping sequences of tension and violence that rank very high not just among Scott's illustrious filmography, but all of sci-fi horror cinema. While an enjoyable experience in isolation, Prometheus is not an especially strong prequel to the Alien franchise as a whole, however from this author's perspective, the film serves as a wonderful introduction to Michael Fassbender's character of David, who in turn goes on to become a compelling throughline to Ridley Scott's, Alien: Covenant (2017). Not quite a masterpiece, Prometheus currently stands as the (exceedingly handsome) black sheep of the Alien series, however should a satisfying concluding chapter of it and the character of David's narrative eventually be made, it very well could find it's significance in the franchise canon promoted by leaps and bounds. A decade before his recent Oscar nomination for his work on Denis Villeneuve's Dune,  Jon Spaihts co-wrote Prometheus – a bold prequel to the Alien franchise that celebrates its tenth anniversary this month.  It was a philosophical sci-fi horror odyssey like no other, that upended expectations and made the New Yorker one of Hollywood's go-to names for science fiction drama that both provokes and thrills.You might know Jon as the man who co-wrote the first Doctor Strange movie along Scott Derrickson and past Script Apart guest C. Robert Cargill. He's also shepherded his own sci-fi worlds to the screen, such as Passengers – a Jennifer Lawrence-starring romance among the stars that hit cinemas in 2016. Prometheus was his introduction to the world, however. He'd written a couple of impressive spec scripts that got him into rooms with high-powered Hollywood directors. Ridley Scott was one of them. As you'll discover in this episode, the idea of an Alien prequel was kind of sprung on him. In an instant, he blurted out an idea for an epic that took the franchise and its mythology in a bold new direction, switching up the series' visceral frights for grand existential contemplation and freaky robots. In this fascinating conversation, Jon delves into about his original draft for the film, titled Alien: Engineers. It followed roughly the same beats as Prometheus but with a few notable exceptions. For starters, Engineers made the bold move of suggesting that Jesus Christ was an alien, and therefore related to the Xenomorph of the first movie. It also had a different ending that set up a planned trilogy of movies with these characters, which Jon explains in detail.  You might also want to listen out for Jon's pitch for a Star Wars series – one of the few sci-fi sandboxes he's not had a chance to play in yet…This is a spoiler-filled conversation – in space, no can you hear you scream that we ruined the plot for you.
