Tune in as Karyn Cooper (Chick-Lit) hops in to break down the 2021 film adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 space opera novel Dune—or at least the first half of the epic book, a crucial detail that Warner Bros. failed to clarify in the film's marketing campaign. This is one of the many subjects that Arthur and Karyn cover alongside their desire to see Zendaya star in a rom-com, the fact that Oscar Isaac should have earned an Emmy nomination for Moon Knight, the movie‘s choice to steer away from the source material's morally gray depiction of House Atreides, and Julia Garner's accent mastery. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049), Dune (2021) stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Babs Olusanmokun. Dune with Eric Roth

Where to begin describing today's guest and his lengthy list of accomplishments? Eric Roth is the Academy Award-winning writer responsible for films like Forrest Gump,  The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and 2018's A Star Is Born. At 77-years-old, Eric is as potent a storytelling force as ever: last year, he delivered a sci-fi epic so huge, you'd have had to have buried your head pretty deep in the sand of a distant sand planet named Arrakis to have missed it. Dune, co-written with director Denis Villeneuve and previous Script Apart guest Jon Spaihts, achieved the impossible. It translated one of the densest, most complex and widely beloved science-fiction novels of all-time into a thrilling blockbuster spectacle that somehow remained true to its source material. Timothée Chalamet starred as Paul Atreides, young prince of the noble House Atreides, as an intergalactic battle erupts over control of the deadly, inhospitable desert planet. Author Frank Herbert wrote the book as a warning about society's tendencies to “give over every decision-making capacity” to a charismatic leader. Eric, Jon and Denis did a terrific job threading that insight into a “chosen one” story that challenges and interrogates that narrative template. For many, the film felt like the moment that theatrical cinema felt “back” after the closures of the pandemic. In a captivating conversation recorded earlier this year, Eric told us all about how the film's towering sense of scale was achieved, how the opening he originally envisioned for the movie would have bankrupted the entire production and what keeps him hungry after all these years. Next on the docket for Eric is a collaboration with Martin Scorsese, penning the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon. There's no slowing down for this veritable titan of the screenwriting universe. This episode contains spoilers for Dune.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. For science fiction readers, the very mention of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune evokes a flurry of emotions. Some love it, some hate it. Some consider it the best science fiction novel ever written, others consider it the genre's antithesis. Regardless, no history of science fiction worth its salt can go without at least mentioning the book, and the indelible influence it's had on numerous genre classics that followed it, from Star Wars (1977) to Pitch Black (2000).Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film adaptation of Herbert's novel plants its flag firmly in the ground of the epic science fiction genre. This is not the operatic adventure of Star Wars, though Luke Skywalker and Paul Atreides slot neatly into the same mythological archetype. Villeneuve's Dune is much closer to Ronald D. Moore's brilliant reimagining of the television series Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) in terms of tone and accessibility. The result is an adaptation that sacrifices Herbert's nuance and intricacies to remain faithful to the original novel in terms of size and scope and—most importantly—to the character arc of main character Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a messiah like figure who is the heir of the House Atreides, an aristocratic family that rules the ocean planet Caladan. The House of Atreides is sent by the Emperor to replace the House of Harkonnen and rule the desert planet Arrakis (Dune) where its people are subjugated and its valuable resource of the life-extending spice is mined. The ideas Herbert plays with throughout the Dune series are obviously provocative. Villeneuve was keenly aware of the kind of controversy Dune would spark. In the months before the film was released, he made his intentions clear when pressed about the story's “white savior” overtones. Herbert was not interested in merely critiquing the “white” savior motif. He was interested in critiquing the notion of a savior, period. There are books upon books to be written from a Christian perspective interacting with the ideas central to Dune. How should a Christian respond to Frank Herbert's criticisms of savior narratives? We should approach Dune unsentimentally and with clear-eyed sanguinity. Christianity is most definitely a messianic religion, but in the two thousand years since Christ, his followers have made more than their fair share of mistakes—Herbert was right in this regard. When the savior's work is taken up by mortals, things go awry. Dune looks less like a critique of the New Testament's Jesus and more like an Old Testament messianic expectation. We witness Paul Atreides's rise and fall much in the same way we read about Samson's, or David's. Herbert would likely contend that we should get comfortable here, enlighten ourselves, and accept that savior narratives point to the flaws of saviors themselves. This Postmodern Realities episode is a spoiler-filled conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about his online-exclusive, Dune and the Future of the Science Fiction Epic.https://www.equip.org/article/dune-and-the-future-of-the-science-fiction-epic/Please note this article will be fully accessible by the public in the future, to get early access to read it now, please see our FAQ section on Early Access to Online-Exclusive Articles by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/early-access-to-online-exclusive-articles-faqs/We'd also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal. Hey podcast fans. Mum's away this week, which means the inmates have taken over the asylum once again. The temptation was to play another round of Sweeten The Deal, but instead Nate and I were good little podcast boys and delivered a surprisingly on point discussion of our favourite videogame adaptations of literary works. Well, I say ‘on point'; there's a fair amount of discussion of new Dune, too, which is what got us thinking about successful book to screen journeys. Sadly, the House Atreides bagpipe band were not available for a rousing rendition of the podcast theme. There's also a micro Cavern of Lies in which things get biblical.

He who controls the spice controls the universe!'Dune' by Frank Herbert is a sci-fi classic that is comparable with some of the other amazing fictional universes. The story takes place on Arrakis, a barren planet scarce of water but containing the immensely valuable spice. House Atreides suffers a catastrophic betrayal and so the young Duke Paul undergoes a quest for revenge and to restore his rightful inheritance. I summarised the book as follows. "It's a fun world and I can see why it has fanatical supporters. I found it easier reading than LOTR but also noticed myself skipping the poetry & songs. It's great for night time reading and to lose myself in the story, but I probably won't bother to dive fully into the whole Dune universe."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. This week, we dig into Denis Villeneuve's DUNE, the latest film adaption of Frank Herbert's steamy rom com. Like it's 80s predecessor by David Lynch and Sting, this new film spectacle is taking the world by storm! Timothy Chalamet stars as Paul Atreides, a down on his luck dreamy man-Prince who's parents - played by the hilarious duo of Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson - decide to pack up the family and move to a multi-mooned desert planet so they can enrich themselves with the natural resources of the natives (Manifest Destiny, anyone)? Alongside his wacky companions Thanos + Aquaman (my man!) the gang gets into some kahhhh-razy adventures, with sinking sand crawlers, spooky sand worms, and even a spitting contest with Javier Bardem. But our dear Prince is troubled by his witchy grandma, killer mosquitos and bad dreams about Zendaya...so after an army of super soldiers attempts a casual genocide on House Atreides, Timmy and his mom hope in a rad mechanical dragonfly and escape into the desert for a campout, while his dad gets some dental work done, all leave us waiting for a Part 2 which has just been green lit for 2023. Joining us to debunk what might just be the above worst description of a sci-fi classic is longtime pal and our friend of the Pod Josh, whose read ALL the Dune books, even the bad one with the sparkly vampires...

Dune is set far in the future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble houses that owe allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino. The novel tells the story of young Paul Atreides (heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and scion of House Atreides) as he and his family relocate to the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe. In a story that explores the complex and multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, the fate of Paul, his family, his new planet and its native inhabitants, as well as the Padishah Emperor, the powerful Spacing Guild, and the secretive female order of the Bene Gesserit, are all drawn together into a confrontation that will change the course of humanity.
