This week, The Filmlosophers are venturing into the blocky world of the big screen with a likely painful discussion of the latest video game adaptation, A Minecraft Movie. But the cinematic critique takes a bizarre turn as they address the alarming reports of disruptive behavior erupting in theaters during certain scenes of the film. Plus, they welcome their newest intern, the enthusiastic Intern Jesus, to the team! In this chaotic episode: Minecraft Movie Meltdown: The team will bravely (and perhaps begrudgingly) dissect A Minecraft Movie, analyzing its success (or more likely, its failures) in translating the beloved game to a cinematic experience. Expect discussions on story, visuals, and whether it captures the essence of building and survival. Theater of Terror: Minecraft Mayhem: The Filmlosophers will delve into the strange phenomenon of disruptive behavior during A Minecraft Movie screenings, pontificating on the breakdown of theater decorum and offering their (likely exasperated) thoughts on cinema etiquette. Welcoming Intern Jesus!: The crew introduces their newest intern, Intern Jesus, to the Filmlosophers family! They'll discuss his passion for film, his favorite (and perhaps surprising) guilty pleasure movies, and why his unique perspective makes him a perfect fit for the team. Join The Filmlosophers for an episode that's a bizarre blend of cinematic disappointment, social commentary on unruly audiences, and the welcoming of a new, divinely named intern. It's going to be a blocky, boisterous, and utterly unique discussion! So pull up a chair, grab your popcorn, and tune in to this week's block-tacular episode of The Filmlosophers!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesBrad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation for Marvel Studios, caught the attention of Defenders fans when he shared that Marvel is exploring bringing back the rest of the Netflix Defenders actors and characters; Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. Winderbaum indicated that the studio is excited about this possibility, but there are a lot of variables that will determine the success of pulling it all together. While this is fun to hear as fans, other Marvel TV is taking a pause. Though sources say these projects were never officially greenlit, Deadline reports that Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. are not currently being developed. This is mostly being attributed to Marvel's shift to traditionally-run television shows. But in confirmed news, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jon Bernthal will star in a Marvel Studios Special Presentation featuring The Punisher that will air in 2026 alongside the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. On Monday we were treated to the surprise drop of the full Andor season 2 trailer from Lucasfilm. In a very un-Star Wars-like fashion, the high octane footage is set to The Revolution Starts Now by Steve Earle and reminds viewers of how acclaimed the first season was. The drop shared more interesting news; the 12-episode season will be dropped in increments of three episodes at a time for four weeks. Phew!DC's duo of James Gunn and Peter Safran took time to have a press event last Friday where they updated us, the people, on where things are going with DC Studios. It's been just over two years since the big film and television overhaul with DC was announced, with Gunn and Safran taking control of the franchise. Gunn reiterated their desire to bring new stories to life with these characters. The updates included the following: Supergirl is halfway through production, Lanterns began production last week, Clayface will be directed by James Watkins and is eyeing a fall 2026 release, Sgt. Rock, still being directed by Luca Guadagnino, no longer has Daniel Craig attached and is looking for its new star, and the animated Robin movie, Dynamic Duo, is in pre-production. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, Gunn had some comments on The Brave and The Bold that some are taking as confirmation that Robert Pattinson will not be the DCU's Batman, with the filmmaker saying,“It's certainly not the plan.” And Safran added, “And we love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with The Brave and the Bold.”The James Bond movie franchise is going through a shake up, with Amazon MGM Studios and Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli forming a new joint venture to house the movie property's intellectual property rights. Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of the James Bond franchise, while Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners of the 60-year-old property. In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM. Since the MGM acquisition, Amazon has held rights to distribute all of the James Bond films, and following completion of the joint venture transaction will control the creative on future productions.Season two of The Last of Us finally has a premiere date. The seven-episode season of the drama will debut April 13 on HBO. That means the season will complete its run in late May, just under the wire for Emmy eligibility this year.Jack O'Connell and Delroy Lindo, who will both star in Ryan Coolger's upcoming film Sinners, have joined the cast of Legendary's upcoming Monsterverse sequel to Godzilla x Kong.Kitao Sakurai, perhaps best known for writing, directing and exec producing The Eric Andre Show, has been tapped to direct Street Fighter, Legendary Entertainment's feature adaptation of the classic video game from Capcom.

Koch worked as a television producer and co-founded Asylum Entertainment which sold to Legendary Entertainment in 2014.In 2015 his life took an unexpected turn when he fell seriously ill during a producers conference in Washington, D.C.To save his life, doctors had to place Koch into a coma. After several harrowing weeks, he miraculously woke up with his mind and spirit intact. However, he learned that he had survived septic shock, which had severely compromised his body. As a result, he had lost all or part of all four limbs, including his right leg and left hand.Even in the face of such devastating circumstances, Koch refused to succumb to despair. Rather than accepting a grim prognosis, he made a vow to not only survive but to thrive for the sake of his teenaged daughter and new wife, Jennifer.Despite being told that his chances of survival were slim, Koch defied the odds. His doctors were astounded by his resilience and determination to live. One doctor, in particular, admitted that Koch had changed her perspective on being a doctor and what could be achieved when patients were willing to fight back. When asked how he survived against unimaginable odds by a doctor at GW hospital, a depleted Koch whispered the powerful truth, “I'm a wrestler.”Over the next 18 months, Koch underwent numerous painful surgeries, prosthetic fittings, and endured intensive rehabilitation.Despite the challenges he faced, he consistently surpassed his doctors' expectations.Recognizing his mental and physical strength, a pioneering surgeon believed Koch was an ideal candidate for a revolutionary human hand transplant. In a groundbreaking procedure, Koch made medical history by successfully receiving a new hand. While it typically takes several years to learn how to use a transplanted hand, Koch's determination and tenacity allowed him to succeed in its use within just four months.Astonishingly, he was back on the tennis court soon thereafter, showcasing his resilience and unwavering spirit.Today, Koch shares his remarkable journey with people worldwide.Through coaching, leadership, and motivational speaking engagements, he inspires others to stand up and fight against adversity.Jonathan Koch's story serves as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the extraordinary possibilities that can emerge from even the darkest of situations.Bio by National Wrestling Hall of Fame

He has a New York literary agent, he works with several major publishers, he indie publishes, and he continues to explore new opportunities that digital publishing offer The way that Kickstarter didn't just open a new door, it completely blew it down, along with a few walls too Dean Wesley Smith's perspective that helped to change Kevin's mind about what Kickstarter was all about Kevin's "Adams Family meets The Naked Gun" series of Dan Shamble Zombie PI novels, and the history of how it started off as a series with a major publisher, flopped, then Kevin got the rights back and did something truly stunning with it once he applied Kickstarter Kevin's first Dan Shamble Kickstarter which brought in 23 times the intial amount he was asking for, and that it paid him more than 6 times the advance he'd rec'd from a major publisher for the last Dan Shamble book he'd done with them The Dragon Business (The Princess Bride meets Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) Kickstarter that brought in 20 times what he'd been asking for The Persephone Kickstarter that Kevin did with Writer/Director Jeffrey Morris Kevin's latest Kickstarter which is a 7 Volume Set of over 130 of his published short stories published over 50 years Writing his first short story when he was 8 years old Publishing his very first short story when he was 14 The personal introductions that he wrote for every one of the stories in this 7 book collection The various levels and Kickstarter rewards he is planning for this Kickstarter The remarkable fact that, despite having published 180 novels with 58 of them being international bestsellers, no publisher would ever even consider publishing a 7 volume hardcover set of Kevin's complete short stories. That he can do this via Kickstarter is a significant paradigm shift How Kickstarter can replace the old "advance" model from traditional publishing The special thing Kevin is doing for all the backers of this latest Kickstarter The Kickstarter will be going live on April 30th for 3 weeks and 2 days And more . . .   After the interview Mark reflects on Kevin's use of short, effective and very clear log lines to describe two of his series.   Links of Interest: Kevin J. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite Fictional Universes Marvel Studios had a strong showing during last week's Cinema Con in Las Vegas, where Kevin Feige dropped bombs and F-bombs while unveiling footage from Deadpool & Wolverine and Captain America: Brave New World. The look at Deadpool featured 9 minutes of spoiler-free material introduced by director Shawn Levy, which was preceded by a comedic clip with the title characters in costume bemoaning cell phone use in the theater. Meanwhile, the Cap 4 scene included an interaction between Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross, with Isiah Bradley factoring into a confrontation.  Paramount also made several major announcements during its Cinema Con panel; officially confirming the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover film is in development and will be produced by Steven Spielberg. An R-rated, live action feature film adaptation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin storyline was also announced, as was a new Star Trek origin film that will act as a prequel to the 2009 movie, slated for a 2025 release. Perhaps most importantly, the studio debuted the trailer for Gladiator 2, starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.  We received our first indication of a title change for Thunderbolts when we caught a glimpse of the logo during Florence Pugh's set tour a couple of weeks ago. Kevin Fiege confirmed the title change while remaining cagey during his appearance at Cinema Con saying, “Yes, you'll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts. That is the official title of Thunderbolts and we won't talk more about that until after the movie comes out.”  James Gunn revealed the official insignia for his DCU version of Superman during Cinema Con. The emblem features a clean and simplistic design that is reminiscent of the logo from the Kingdom Come comic line. Deadpool and Wolverine are joining the viral popcorn bucket craze. While promoting the film at Cinema Con, Kevin Fiege confirmed an intentionally crude and rude bucket was being designed by Deadpool himself. Lionsgate shifted The Crow release to August 23 from its initial June 7 date and postponed Saw XI by a year, now set for September 26, 2025 Hailee Steinfeld joined the cast of Ryan Coolger's untitled horror thriller film and will star alongside Michael B. Jordan. StarWars.com announced a new comic miniseries starting July 3 called Star Wars: Inquisitors. Lionsgate announced that Blumhouse will revive The Blair Witch Project. It's currently unclear if the film will connect to the original 1999 film or reimagine the concept. Margot Robbie's production company Lucky Chap will produce a film based on the board game Monopoly. Nia DaCosta, director of The Marvels and Candyman, is in discussions to direct the second film in Sony's 28 Days Later sequel trilogy, with Danny Boyle returning to helm the first sequel from writer Alex Garland. Tim Kring, the creator of the superhero drama series Heroes, is pitching a sequel titled Heroes: Eclipsed to potential buyers. The original series aired for four seasons on NBC and was followed by a limited series titled Heroes Reborn in 2015. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been renewed for Season Two at Apple TV+. In addition, Apple struck a deal with Legendary Entertainment to develop multiple spinoff series set in the Monsterverse. Star Wars author John Jackson Miller is penning Batman: Resurrection, a continuation of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film, set immediately after its events, in contrast to the Batman '89 comics, which occur after both Burton films. Glen Powell, star of Anyone But You, Twisters, and Top Gun: Maverick will star in Paramount's The Running Man, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel that Edgar Wright will direct.

It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. The film is the third adaptation of Dune, following David Lynch's 1984 film and John Harrison's 2000 television miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and television rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. Production contracts were secured only for the first film, relying on its success before a sequel would be produced. Principal photography took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.Dune was scheduled for a late 2020 release but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, before its international release on September 15; it was then released in United States theaters and streaming on HBO Max on October 22. Dune was a box office success, grossing almost $435 million on a $165 million budget. It was well received by critics and audiences with praise for Villeneuve's direction, screenplay, the visual effects, ambition, costume design, Hans Zimmer's musical score, cinematography, and faithfulness to the source material. The film won six awards at the 94th Academy Awards and was nominated in four other categories, including Best Picture, in addition to receiving numerous other accolades. A sequel, Dune: Part Two, was released in March 2024. Casting Choices: Some viewers find certain actors, particularly the young leads, to be well-cast and embody the characters’ personalities effectively. Negatives: Pacing and Storytelling Choices: Some critics found the pacing of the first season to be slow and felt the show condensed plot points from the original series, potentially hindering character development and impacting the overall story flow. Deviation from the Source Material: While some viewers appreciate the show’s attempt to adapt the story for a live-action format, others felt certain changes to the narrative or character arcs were unnecessary and took away from the essence of the original. Budget The budget for the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix is reported to be $15 million per episode. This means the entire first season, consisting of eight episodes, reportedly cost $120 million to produce. Dune: Part 2 (2024) Out of 10 Why Did Lady Jessica Go Full Super-Villains Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary Picking up after the events of the first film, Paul Atreides seeks refuge with the Fremen, the indigenous people of the harsh desert planet Arrakis. He continues to develop his prophetic visions and abilities, while also forming a bond with Chani, a young Fremen warrior. Meanwhile, the Harkonnens, House Atreides’s bitter rivals, remain in control of Arrakis and continue to exploit its valuable resource, spice. Paul grapples with the weight of his destiny and the potential for a violent future. He must navigate complex alliances and face difficult choices as he ponders the potential consequences of his actions. The film explores themes of revenge, destiny, and the struggle for power. It delves deeper into the intricate world-building of Frank Herbert’s original novel, introducing new characters and factions. Cast and Crew Director: Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Main Cast: – Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, the young heir who embraces his destiny among the Fremen. – Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, the Fremen warrior who becomes Paul’s love interest. – Rebecca Ferguson is back as Lady Jessica, Paul’s Bene Gesserit mother. – Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the leader of the Sietch Tabr Fremen tribe. – Josh Brolin portrays Gurney Halleck, Paul’s loyal warrior mentor. New additions to the cast include: – Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the cunning nephew of Baron Harkonnen. – Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the Emperor’s daughter with a complex role to play. – Christopher Walken joins the cast in an undisclosed role. – Léa Seydoux as Lady Fenring. Other notable crew members: – Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, building upon the unique soundscape established in the first film. – Greig Fraser serves as the cinematographer, capturing the vast landscapes and intricate details of Arrakis. Dune: Part Two – Production and Budget Production: – Development for Dune: Part Two began after Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and television rights for Dune in 2016. – Director Denis Villeneuve signed on in 2017 with the intention of making a two-part adaptation due to the novel’s complexity. – Originally, production contracts were only secured for the first film. The green light for the sequel depended on the first film’s success. – Despite Villeneuve’s concerns about the sequel’s green light due to the first film’s hybrid release (theatrical and HBO Max), it received the go-ahead, allowing them to move forward. – Filming for Dune: Part Two took place primarily in Jordan, Italy, and Hungary, with additional locations utilized as needed. Budget: – The estimated budget for Dune: Part Two is $190 million, which is significantly higher than the first film’s $165 million budget. – This increased cost can be attributed to several factors, including: – Expanding the scope of the story and world-building compared to the first film. – Bringing in new and established actors with higher salaries. – Creating complex visual effects and sets to bring the fictional universe to life. The 2010s were so fire, so lit, and so cringe, we just had to revisit our five-part series looking at the decade. In the 2010s, we had good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is again bringing you the most memorable moments of the years 2010 through 2019 with our series We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna give their hot takes on the years 2010 and 2011.2010 was the year of Inception, iPads and Instagram, Bieber, bromance and Bitcoin, cougars, mansplaining, The Walking Dead, Silly Bandz and so much more. And 2011 brought us planking, Funko Pops and #YOLO, Bronies, ghosting and Game of Thrones, and “winning” at life with Tiger's Blood. Each episode in the series features a Marvel Minute and the Year of Our Lady Gaga for each year, too. Challenging the dominant culture: intent vs. interpretation with Ronald Wimberly

On this episode of The Autonomous Creative, I sit down for a super fun conversation with Ronald Wimberly. Ronald is best known for his graphic novel Prince of Cats, which is currently being developed as a film by Legendary Entertainment. His other works include a giant tabloid journal and art magazine on identity and visual culture, LAAB, Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm, Black History In Its Own Words, and his critically acclaimed webcomic, Gratuitous Ninja (which is currently being Kickstarted and published by Beehive Books as a 600-page accordion-folded concertina!). I first met Ronald Wimberly in 2007, and shortly after we came together to work on my book, Trish Trash. We have had many long, in depth conversations over the years, and I can always count on them turning out hilarious, challenging, and never boring. This one is no exception. We explore some of Ronald's most popular work and its influences, including other artists, cultures, and his personal identity. Ronald compares the many references in his work to sampling, and explains why he believes it leads to deeper, more engaging art. We also discuss the discrepancies between the artist's intent, and the audience's interpretation. How much does it actually matter? Is it better, healthier even, to look away? More from the episode... Ronald breaks down some of the references in his graphic novel, Prince of Cats, which he describes as the B-side to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. “One of the lessons about being an artist that I've learned over these years is you put stuff out, you mean things, sometimes it's inconsequential to what people get from it” — Why Ronald thinks focusing too heavily on how his work is perceived is unhealthy. Ronald reminiscences on New York in the 80's, newsstands, and being introduced to the world of comics. We discuss the early influences on Ronald's work, such as Japanese pop culture and Jordan Crane's Non, and examine the value of tracing these influences. Ronald talks about meeting fellow comic, Evan Dorkin, author of Milk & Cheese, and the joke it took him ten years to understand. “You and the world that you live in has created this.” — How dominant culture and aesthetics feed into each other, from hex codes to Marvel movies. What does Ronald mean when he talks about “doing the least possible reproduction of pernicious ideas that are embedded in aesthetics”? “I always liked the collector cards from Marvel more than the comics...It's an exploded world.” — How does building context enrich a work of art? Ronald explains the intention behind his tabloid newspaper, LAAB, and how it compares to work he's done in the past. More from Ronald Wimberly Ronald Wimberly is a comic artist best known for Black History In Its Own Words and Prince of Cats, an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in NYC in the 80s, which he's now developing as a film with Legendary Entertainment. He's got several other major projects in the works as well, like his giant tabloid journal and art magazine on identity and visual culture, LAAB, plus more comics and more movies. Guy is BUSY. Ronald and I even collaborated once on a comic called "The Beautiful Ones", and he was my inspiration for a well-loved blog post about whether it's a "HELL YEAH" or no. Bringing Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel “Dune” to the big screen was considered a daunting proposition. But Mary Parent, a top Legendary Entertainment executive, gave filmmaker Denis Villeneuve the biggest budget of his career to realize his vision. Still, it wasn't Marvel-sized funding and Villeneuve says he's actually grateful for that. “It's good to have restrictions, it brings discipline. And I needed that discipline. I'm serious about that. I don't think I would be comfortable to make a movie without limits,” says Villeneuve. “Dune” was a success, and it's now up for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.

Joining the show today are No Film School‘s Jo Light, the GoodTrash Genrecast‘s Dalton Stuart and The Cinematropolis‘s own Daniel Bokemper. Frank Herbert's 1965 novel has historically been tough to crack. Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky famously failed to get his version off the ground in the 1970s before the acclaimed Twin Peaks writer/director David Lynch released a critically panned adaptation in 1984. Eventually, The Sci-Fi Channel would take another stab at the material with a three-part Dune mini-series that would receive enough acclaim to get a follow-up series, Children of Dune. After the rights for another big-screen adaptation completed a shuffle and landed at Legendary Entertainment, Dennis Villeneuve was announced as the director in 2017. Though you wouldn't know it from the marketing, Villeneuve decided to break the novel into two parts, with the second half just being greenlit this week. The list of studio M&A deals and rumors is a long one, with buyers ranging from streaming platforms and traditional media to CPG and blue chip private equity firms. In this episode, Chris and Andrew discuss the recent high-priced M&A, media valuations on a standalone VS streamer-integrated basis, private equity's perceived market timing, where the next big talent deals may happen, and new content buyers like FAST platforms, Apple, and Nike. (and apologies, we had a technical snafu so the recording quality is a bit subpar) Subscribe to our newsletter. It actually reminds me of when I first got into the digital space back in 2012, 2013. But we'll talk about that parallel a little bit later on. There's a few deals, I think, worth highlighting, but are you reading the same headlines that I am? Andrew Cohen:Yeah, it's crazy. We've seen a bunch of acquisitions, investments, and then even a lot of rumored ones and the numbers are eye-popping. So it's... Chris Erwin:Let's go through a few of these deals. As always, there's a laundry list. But most recently, Hello Sunshine was acquired for $900 million by a Blackstone-backed media venture. And of note, that venture, I think, has Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, they're helping to spearhead it. We saw Amazon acquire MGM for around $8.5 billion, and it's actually, I think 28 times EBITDA, wild. A24, supposedly rumored to be exploring a sale for around $3 billion. Also SpringHill, spearheaded by famed athlete LeBron James, seeking a sale for around three-quarters of a million. And the list goes on. You got Imagine with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Legendary Entertainment, Lionsgate Spyglass, et cetera. Any other big deals I'm missing? Andrew Cohen:I'm sure there are. Especially if you span back over the past year or two, seeing things like Crunchyroll being acquired by Sony for almost $2 billion. STX sold for almost $1 billion last year, and there's a lot more. We're seeing these every week and it's definitely made me sit back and wonder why. Chris Erwin:Quick clarification. Was STX sold or they've just raised seven hundred million? Andrew Cohen:So it raised and then it merged. Chris Erwin:So then it begs the question, Andrew, why is there all this market activity? And particularly, I think just over the past two to three months, it feels like there's been a major uptick. And I think with all the rumors that we just walked through and more, that we can come back after the August vacation and Q3, Q4 is just a wild M&A sprint. So why is this happening? Andrew Cohen:Like a lot of other pods we've done, all roads lead back to the streaming wars. So content and IP, what we're seeing, is more valuable than ever before because of the exorbitant spends that we're seeing in the streaming wars as consumption is shifting from traditional TV and film onto the streaming platforms. And so the major players: Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and now Discovery, all of them are spending more and more in the billions every year on content and marketing to increase customer acquisition, to reduce churn, and to maximize lifetime value, and to ultimately win the future of entertainment when it's a streaming-first world. And in this world, content is more valuable than ever before. It's content-exclusive IP. It drives user acquisition. It minimizes churn. And what we've seen is it's new tentpole originals of things like Stranger Things that really boosts user acquisitions. Andrew Cohen:People come on to be part of the zeitgeist, watch these new shows. And then library content, so things like The Office, boost user retention. People stay there to watch these comfort food shows. And I think that that explains a lot of the acquisition and investment activity that we're seeing. So things like Hello Sunshine and A24, I see as more of a bet on future output of new tentpole originals for user acquisition. Both of those studios do have a great library of content, but I think it's more about taking a bet on best-in-class creators to continue to churn out the type of best-in-class content that's going to bring people to the platform. Andrew Cohen:Then things like the MGM acquisition by Amazon, I think that that was really a big bet on library. They have classic IP like James Bond. Chris Erwin:Don't forget Pink Panther. Andrew Cohen:Of course. The list goes on, I'm sure. Rocky. Roku, who recently did the same acquiring the Quibi library. So that's going to be the type of stuff that keeps people on the platform, reduces churn, and maximizes user retention. So really, a catchphrase I hear a lot from people in that world is that as the streaming wars are going on, it's these production companies that are the bullet makers, and that makes them more valuable than ever before in today's [inaudible 00:04:18] . Chris Erwin:So a few things to break down there. I think a point about investing in production companies/studios, where you're going to get a team that you believe is going to make a lot of high quality and differentiated content in the future that is going to help drive user acquisition through temporal content. And just even having a really great library, which drives retention, which is increasingly important as there's more and more competition, right? Someone churns off, the ability to get them back becomes even more expensive, as now there's HBO Max and there's Peacock and all the niche streamers, et cetera. And I think that is something that is reflected in Netflix's recent re-upping of their deal with Shondaland, right? So that was the first big talent landmark deal with the streamer. I think dating back to around 2016, 2017, that set off a big talent buying spree of Ryan Murphy with Netflix and a handful of others. But clearly it worked out for Netflix, right? The number one performing Netflix show is Bridgerton, which was done through the Shondaland partnership. And I think they're betting that that's going to happen again. Andrew Cohen:On a similar point, even the second-tier streamers like Paramount Plus. You just saw Viacom CBS just spent $900 million on a deal with the creators of South Park to turn out new seasons of the show and even new movies. So again, taking this bet on fresh content, beloved IP to drive acquisition and retention. Chris Erwin:The dynamics that we are talking about now is where we're seeing that there is a very viable business model for this content. I think it's worth noting that you look at a price tag that we're seeing for what's rumored for Spring Hill or 900 million for Hello Sunshine. And you're like, how does this make any sense? On a standalone basis, do these companies make enough revenue and EBITDA that drives that independent valuation. Chris Erwin:But the point is the independent valuation is not what matters. It's about the integrated value that is going to be created in the business model of a streamer. And I think back to my early days in the digital world where I started out in digital YouTube and MCN, so I was part of Big Frame, which is then sold to Awesomeness. But in that vintage of 2012, 2013, you saw incredible investment where I think it was Comcast and Time Warner Cable were investing in Maker Studios and Full Screen and Dreamworks Animation, but Awesomeness pretty early on in 2012, if I remember, 2013. And there was all this hope, which is like, okay, when you looked at the Comscore data of these MCNs, just the amount of digital traffic to them was incredible. Chris Erwin:And so the bet from these traditional cable or media businesses, is like, we don't have the business model now to extract revenues, but we're sure we'll figure it out. With traffic and audience, revenue will come. But the reality is, that never actually really happened, and there was also massive changes in the platform algorithms in YouTube or in Facebook, which caused viewership to just tank overnight. A lot of things that were outside of the control. But today these dynamics, the business model is much more solid and the environment is much more stable, because these companies are going, like a Netflix or a Peacock's, going direct to consumer. They're not relying on a third party platform. So it actually makes sense. So I just thought that's an interesting parallel, comparing my weirdo digital history. Andrew Cohen:Absolutely. I think the fact that you refer to 2013 as vintage, I think shows how fast this space is moving. And I think what you just said about the stable operating environment on the buy side for the platforms, I think is just as true on the sell side as well, comparing this premium OTT landscape to the wild wild west of early stage digital video. Because I think a lot of these bets on early stage YouTube traders, MCNs, where you catch lightning in a bottle, but then the algorithm shifts, trends shifts. I think right now, when you look at companies like an A24 or a Hello Sunshine ,who have been able to consistently produce the [inaudible 00:08:11] best-in-class movies, TV that people connect with. I think that that is a safer bet that someone like a Netflix or an Apple can bring them onto their platform and say, "Keep making that, but make it for us." And that there's consistency and reliability there that they're going to continue to turn out the type of premium fair that brings people onto the platform. Chris Erwin:There's also another trend that's happening here in the buyer-verse that's worth calling out. And that is the fact that really large private equity, blue-chip companies are getting involved in the content bidding wars. So specifically, right, we saw Apollo over the past few months, acquire Yahoo and AOL from Verizon for a few billion. And then Hello Sunshine, again, was acquired by a Blackstone-backed private equity vehicle. From my history in digital and entertainment, particularly over the past five to seven years, you wouldn't see these big PE firms making these size bets in media, typically. But I think the tides have turned. And the reason is, I think these are going to be, short-term holds. The private equity owners are sophisticated. They don't want a standalone basis that these companies are not going to drive meaningful revenue and cashflow. Chris Erwin:But like you said, the streamer war dynamics means that there's going to be an aggressive buying race over the next two to three years. It's not going away over the next six months. It's going to increase. And if these firms can buy up a bunch of media assets, consolidate them, get them to a certain scale, and even potentially, who knows? Is the next Shondaland deal with Netflix? Will we start seeing equivalents of that with Apollo and Blackstone packaged into their new media portfolios? Potentially. And then they're going to flip them for a good profit, I think, in the next 36 months. So I wasn't seeing this coming, but it seems to make sense. Andrew Cohen:How do you think that the increasing stack presence plays into all this? Chris Erwin:Obviously Buzzfeed is going public in a spec and is using spec proceeds and other investment to roll up complex, as well. As these digitally native companies, again, are realizing increased scale through consolidation, then getting more investment through spec, maybe they're upping their quality of programming. And they're looking at really premium franchises, like say Hot Ones under Complex or Buzzfeed Tasty, and say, "How can we go even bigger and make this attractive to a Netflix or a Peacock or a Discovery and align with their Food Network programming?" Yeah. Maybe that also feeds the wars in the future. I don't know. That's my two cents. Andrew Cohen:Totally makes sense. So as we look at what you just said, that PE, they're holding for this big buying spree to come as values are inflating for content and IP, I think makes you think of who these buyers are going to be. One thing that comes to mind is just the OTT platforms themselves. So, and we're already seeing platforms spending tons of money on output deals. You mentioned Shondaland, Viacom, CBS. Would it make sense for them to follow the Disney model? Like what Disney did acquiring Pixar or Marvel, and acquiring studios outright to own the process from end to end, from development to distribution. And then I think beyond that, there's a few other potential buyers in the market. Like consumer product brands. We saw Apple is one of the companies that are better being rumored to buy A24. Nike is one of the companies being rumored to buy SpringHill. So I think as we're seeing media and commerce merge and content become this universal truth, I could definitely see a world where these studios serve real value to companies even outside of the streaming wars, as we know it. Chris Erwin:Well, I think of note, Andrew, that there's just also not a lot of premium studio assets left, right? MGM was taken off the table, Legendary was taken off the table. I think Lionsgate is rumored. I think a question that I'm left with is like, what are these other assets that could be exciting for, say, new buyers for these CPG companies. Like a Nike, for example. So here's a crazy thought. Thinking about the next big source of digitally-native IP that caters to these new, young fandoms that are going to become older and want to have loyalty with platforms over the years, might some of these streamers start dipping their toes in acquiring large metaverse creators or worlds? Is that something we might see? I think that's top of mind because we're doing some work that's relevant in that space, but just a random thought that came to me. Andrew Cohen:Absolutely. I think eyeballs follow content and IP that they connect with. And right now, especially for younger audiences, a lot of that is being originated in the metaverse. So definitely wouldn't be surprised to see that adapted by the main streaming platforms, I think even just, again, expanding the [inaudible 00:12:50] power defining the streaming wars, there's also what we call the AVOD wars or the fast wars outside of subscription platforms like Netflix and HBO. You have the Roku's, the Tubi's of the world that amassing huge audiences at a really big footprint. But right now it's still a really commodified space. And we've been seeing some moves into original content programming by them to differentiate them and their offerings in the marketplace, like the Quibi library acquisition that we mentioned earlier. But I could definitely see them moving more and more upstream to more premium tentpole originals. And to do that, I think acquiring a studio or production company would make a lot of sense. Chris Erwin:Yeah. I think the core business model for those AVOD and fast platforms is selling ad inventory across their third party content. But we know that the negotiation rights for selling that inventory, that is a constant battle with their partners, and who knows how the terms are going to change. And so where they have more control, is there more owned content hubs that they're creating, which gives them not only more ad inventory, but also a differentiated user experience relative to their other fast peers, right? Andrew Cohen:With a bigger user base, bigger control of the market and audience size, you have more leverage with those ad partners. I think the most viable way to gain market share, and like I said, it's kind of a commodified space, is by having differentiated premium content offering that can make Roku the go-to AVOD platform. And then once you own that audience, you could now have a lot more leverage in the ad market. Chris Erwin:We all know a lot of marketers are really frustrated by the fact that they are not able to participate in the SVOD environment. So we know marketers have been clamoring, Netflix say, like, "Let us in." Also create an ad based model. Now we're seeing that HBO max and peacock have ad-based support. But I think a lot of these marketers still want more premium content environments to advertise to consumers in. And I think the fast platforms are going to offer that for them as that demand goes up. I think that's yet another reason why they're going to start investing in more premium content, to get those ad dollars. But Andrew, I think that we are backing up against our time limit here. So unless there's any final points, I think we've got to say, "Till next time." Andrew Cohen:Next time. See you then.

Legendary Entertainment and Warner Brothers now have four kaiju movies in their MonsterVerse franchise.  Kaiju, giant monsters that rampage through cities, are once again on the big (and small screen) in 2021's GODZILLA VS. KONG.  This was a highly anticipated film where two of the most iconic monsters in movie history go head to head in a major Hollywood film. Cartographer and geologist Dr. Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård) is hired by apex Cybernetics to investigate the center of the earth.  When Kong is endangered from an attack from Godzilla, Monarch decides to move him to Antartica where an entrance to the earth's innercore may exist.  Soon Godzilla's rampage back on the surface makes Lind and others wonder if there is a greater conspiracy than just angry monsters. Genre director Adam Wingard directs a film based off the screenplay by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein.  The cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza Gonzalez, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, among others.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this latest big monster movie and give their thoughts where it fits in the MonsterVerse as well as other recent Kaiju films such as RAMPAGE (2018).
