We just watched Honey Don't — twice — and still can't believe how bad it was. Directed by Ethan Coen and co-written with Tricia Cooke, the film stars Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans, and Charlie Day in what should have been a stylish neo-noir. Instead, it's a messy, over-sexed, and painfully misguided movie that left us frustrated, confused, and honestly kind of angry. In this episode of Thumb War, we break down exactly why Honey Don't doesn't work — from the awkward sex scenes, one-note characters, and forced political gags, to the wasted performances of a stellar cast. We also compare it to Drive-Away Dolls, Bound, and even classic Coen Brothers films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men to highlight just how far this one misses the mark. Spoilers throughout. We also talk representation, Ethan & Joel Coen's split, and why this film feels like a wasted “blank check” project. If you saw Honey Don't, did you hate it as much as we did? Send us an email! Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke are back with the second installment in their lesbian b-movie trilogy. “Honey Don't” has arrived, and reception has been lukewarm to say the least. How does it stack up against “Drive Away Dolls” and the rest of the films in the Coen brother's oeuvre? Tune in to find out. Oh loooooots of stuff in what we've been watching too, don't miss it. 0:00 – Introductions 26:50 – “Honey Don't!” Spoiler-Free Review 1:10:12 - What We've Been Watching Original Music provided by Kurt Moren https://ofsilent.life/
Margaret Qualley is a true one-of-a-kind force in film and television. Her work is always appointment viewing because her filmography is brimming with variety and unique characters that challenge her to swing big in new ways. From The Leftovers and The Nice Guys to The Substance and Honey Don't, those roles don't work unless they're filled with an actor willing to pour every ounce of themself into bringing them to life on screen, and that right there is a consistent truth of Qualley's work.In her latest, Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke's Drive-Away Dolls follow-up film, Honey Don't, Qualley headlines as the title character. Honey is a private investigator in Bakersfield, California who gets caught up in a series of deaths tied to a mysterious church. With the help of her assistant (Gabby Beans), Honey's attempt to crack the case puts her in Reverend Drew Devlin's (Chris Evans) orbit and overlaps with her budding relationship with Aubrey Plaza's MG, and her role as a supportive sister and aunt to Kristen Connolly and Talia Ryder's characters respectively. With Honey Don't now playing in theaters nationwide, Qualley joined me for a Collider Ladies Night chat during which we revisited her days as a dancer, including what prompted the switch to focus on acting. She also looks back on memorable lessons learned making The Leftovers and The Nice Guys, considers how working on The Substance changed her, and talked about her top-tier scene partners in Honey Don't. For this week's main podcast review, Nadia Dalimonte, Dan Bayer, Katie Johnson & Joseln Safadi join me to review and discuss the latest film from Ethan Coen, "Honey Don't!," starring Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Day, and Chris Evans. The second in a "lesbian B-movie trilogy" following Coen and co-writer/producer Tricia Cooke's "Drive-Away Dolls" (2024), the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received a mixed response, but is now playing in theaters from Focus Features. What did we think of this Bakersfield, California-set modern detective story? Please tune in as we discuss the writing, direction, performances, comedy, how much we miss Joel Coen, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! To the White Sea is back to discuss HONEY DON'T!—the slapjacking new film from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke—and we're bringing a new episode format to attempt to wrap our minds around this monumental moment. We've gathered some of our favorite minds of filmmaking and film analysis—Melissa Tuckman, Ben Brewer, and Emilio Diaz—for an unrehearsed panel discussion affectionately dubbed The McDunnough Group. We explore important issues of the day including how this new film differs from a Joel and Ethan collaboration, how a more varied filmmaking approach impacts the experience of the viewer, and whether the film successfully defines its moral universe. Thank you so much to all of the panel guests. Special thanks to Focus Features. Coens Covered: Honey Don't!, Drive-Away Dolls, The Big Lebowski, The Ladykillers, Burn After Reading Plus: Supervixens, Before Sunset, Punch-Drunk Love, Love Lies Bleeding, Death Proof “In livelier precincts, the swells of Dreamland gather to inspect the complicated weave of another piece of gossamer… Another movie, another portion of balm for the ache of a toiling mankind.” Want to join the study group? Tricia Cooke is having her moment, and it's been a long time coming. Together with partner Ethan Coen, she's made last years DRIVE AWAY DOLLS and the new HONEY DON'T from scripts written long ago. And in some ways, the seed for these very gay, very fun movies was planted by a modern classic of fun gay cinema: Jamie Babbit's BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER. Tricia and Jordan talk about that film, the new one, and the weird juxtaposition of being free to make this once-"uncommercial" cinema in a time when queer freedoms feel so tenuous. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the forthcoming Stephen King adaptation, THE LONG WALK. Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Keep up with the show on Instagram and Bluesky.

Send us a textWhen the Coen brothers parted ways after decades of collaboration, film fans wondered what their individual work might reveal about their creative dynamic. Drive Away Dolls, Ethan Coen's first solo directorial effort, provides a fascinating if frustrating answer to that question. This deep-dive episode explores how the absence of Joel's balancing influence results in a film where Ethan's stylistic tendencies become exaggerated to the point of self-parody. We analyze how the film's inconsistent tone, from Margaret Qualley's baffling Southern accent to the cartoon sound effects that punctuate scenes, creates a disjointed viewing experience where characters seem to exist in entirely different movies.Through our conversation, we unpack why character relationships fall flat despite talented performers, how scenes lack proper setup and payoff, and why the film's attempts at madcap comedy often miss their mark. We highlight Beanie Feldstein's standout performance as the one consistently enjoyable element in an otherwise chaotic film.Beyond mere criticism, our discussion examines the creative alchemy of successful partnerships and what happens when that balance is disrupted. We explore how the screenplay (reportedly written around 2000 and never updated) feels anachronistic in both humor and sensibilities, raising questions about creative decisions throughout production.Whether you're a Coen brothers aficionado curious about their separate trajectories or simply interested in the dynamics of creative collaboration, this episode offers thoughtful analysis on how even talented filmmakers sometimes need the right partnership to bring out their best work. The conversation serves as both a critique of Drive Away Dolls and a celebration of what made the Coen brothers' joint filmography so special.Written Lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

[Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.]One of the very best parts of having a returning guest on Collider Ladies Night? Realizing how much they've accomplished during such a short period of time. Geraldine Viswanathan made her first Ladies Night appearance in 2020 for The Broken Hearts Gallery and since has completed a four-season run on Miracle Workers, starred opposite Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks and Sarah Snook in The Beanie Bubble, headlined Drive-Away Dolls with Margaret Qualley, made Oh, Hi! with Molly Gordon which secured distribution out of Sundance 2025, and now she's part of one of the biggest film franchises of all time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Viswanathan makes her first MCU appearance as Mel in Thunderbolts*. She's Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) extremely attentive and diligent assistant. Initially, she seems quite loyal too, but when Bucky (Sebastian Stan) suggests Mel secretly slip him information on Val in hopes of having her impeached, eventually, Mel concedes. While that choice may suggest Mel's willingness to double-cross her boss, ultimately, she changes course again, pushing the button that saves Val's life from the Sentry (Lewis Pullman). So where does Mel stand? Does she skew more villain than hero? Does she still admire Valentina? That's exactly what I dug into with Viswanathan during her second Collider Ladies Night interview. Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is a little bit obsessed with Beanie Feldstein. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2024 dark buddy comedy Drive-Away Dolls for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Drive-Away Dolls is a chaotic queer romp set in 1999. The plot follows Jamie and Marian, two lesbian besties who could not be more different from one another, as they take a road trip to Tallahassee while being pursued by some very inefficient goons. Coen brothers movies are known for a flavor of dark humor and a level of absurdity that can be polarizing, and this one is no exception. While Leigh (and her wife) found Drive-Away Dolls hilarious, Ellie won't be rewatching anytime soon. If you're hoping to find a new ship to stay up late reading about on Ao3, you'll probably be disappointed. Although the level of lesbian shenanigans is off the charts from Jamie's L Word vibe to the sheer number of dildos on screen at any given time, the sexual chemistry between the leads is not believable. While we can't quite root for Jamie and Marian as a couple, we still found the movie enjoyable as an outlandishly gay comedy. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Drive-Away Dolls, titled “Member of Congress”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida.
