Abu and Leo dig into the Fremen Jihad, the brutal 12-year war Frank Herbert left almost entirely off-page between his first two novels. Leaning on the Dune Encyclopedia to fill in that missing history, they trace how a political standoff curdled into religious conquest, then set this jihad beside the Butlerian Jihad to ask what Frank was really saying about charismatic leaders, mob fervor, and the cycles of power and violence that drive human history. This episode contains SPOILERS for Dune and Dune Messiah IN THIS EPISODE Why 300,000 Fremen obliterated a Great House's three-million-strong army at Malathon, and how the Landsraad fatally misread what Paul's rise actually meant The Battle of Molitor, the closest thing to a united resistance, where the Bene Gesserit, Sardaukar, and Landsraad made their stand and the Fedaykin turned the tide How the Qizarate priesthood hijacked the war into a campaign of forced conversion, and the 40 religions Paul tells Stilgar he wiped out The Bene Gesserit conspiracy to discard their failed Kwisatz Haderach and restart the breeding program What Scytale's nine words, "He didn't use the jihad. In this premiere episode of Journey to Arrakis, we open the doors to the vast, windswept universe of Dune by going straight to the source. Author and biographer Brian Herbert joins us for an intimate conversation about his father, Frank Herbert, the mind behind one of the most influential science‑fiction sagas ever written. Brian reflects on Frank's creative process, the philosophical roots of the Dune universe, and the personal experiences that shaped the novel's themes—ecology, power, religion, and human potential. Together, we explore how a single story about a desert planet grew into a cultural touchstone that continues to challenge and inspire readers more than half a century later. Featured Audio With permission from Macmillan Audio, this episode includes select clips from the audiobook of Dune, offering listeners a vivid entry point into the world of Arrakis: Princess Irulan's private writings, which frame the political and historical tensions surrounding Paul Atreides A dramatic moment in which Paul and Jessica, fugitives in the desert, encounter the Fremen for the first time—an encounter that will alter the fate of the Imperium What You'll Hear in This Episode Brian Herbert's memories of Frank Herbert The philosophical and political questions that shaped the novel Immersive audio moments from the original Dune audiobook Why This Episode Matters To understand Dune, you must first understand the man who imagined it. 305. How Do Great Stories Help Us Prepare for War-Time?

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.” That's what the Lord Jesus promised His disciples. How does His word, with support from fantastical fiction, help us prepare for armed conflicts across our real world? Episode sponsors The Star-Blessed by Angie Dickinson Realm Makers 2026 Conference & Expo The Hole-Man by Dan Daetz Above the Circle of Earth by E. Stephen Burnett Mission update New at Lorehaven: join the Lorehaven Authorship Subscribe free to get updates and join the Lorehaven Guild Quotes and notes The main relevant fact admitted by all parties is that war is very disagreeable. The main contention urged as fact by Pacifists would be that wars always do more harm than good. How is one to find out whether this is true? It belongs to a class of historical generalisations which involve a comparison between the actual consequences of some actual event and a consequence which might have followed if that event had not occurred. “Wars do no good” involves the proposition that if the Greeks had yielded to Xerxes and the Romans to Hannibal, the course of history ever since would have been perhaps better, but certainly no worse than it actually has been; that a Mediterranean world in which Carthaginian power succeeded Persian would have been at least as good and happy and as fruitful for all posterity as the actual Mediterranean world in which Roman power succeeded Greek. My point is not that such an opinion seems to me overwhelmingly improbable. My point is that both opinions are merely speculative; there is no conceivable way of convincing a man of either. C. S. Lewis, “Why Am I Not A Pacifist” 1. Great stories show us that war is hell. Answer to Stephen's earlier question: all great stories need conflict. Without any conflict, no fights, battles, war, sin, we'd have no story. (Side thought: without the Fall, fiction as we know it couldn't exist.) Yes, we do love stories that are so focused on war that the word is right in the title: Star Wars, World of Warcraft, Warhammer 40,000. But it's vital for stories to show conflict/war as somewhat realistic. People die and do not return. Wounds hurt. War-“glory” is fleeting. And of course, folks start or fight in wars for very corrupt reasons. 2. Stories also show wars can be necessary. God Himself, as Author of the Story, allowed/planned for conflict. The very existence of fiction reminds us conflict serves a purpose. Folks uncomfortable with war often find ways to like these stories. This might indicate that even they know conflict has some purpose. Few critics would reasonably dispute (by faithful in-universe terms) the justifiable causes of the Federation, Fremen, or Men of Gondor. Deep Christian traditions of “just war theory” often supports them. Villains have many motives, but often can be stopped only by force. 3. Best of all, stories help us long for peace. Having shown war as hell, but also necessary, stories can do more. The best ones remind us that all conflict and war is temporary. At our best, we as fans aren't mercenaries who live for the fight. We do want that redemptive, happy ending for heroes, already! … At least, until the next war-story reminding us that it's not yet. Most stories hold this happy end always out of reach, off the page. Others, chief among these the biblical Story, directly promise this. Com station Top question for listeners What are your favorite war-stories and why? Fans like Luke liked exploring pros/cons of adaptation: Our kids usually prefer books to their screen adaptations, but were very disappointed by the Mary Poppins books. The Disney adaptation took a lot of liberties, but it also made Poppins more likeable and wisely left out pagan elements of the story. Next on Fantastical Truth This month's Project Hail Mary film is being praised as a fresh, thrilling sci-fi take that is wholesome and sincere. As expected, we're seeing more fantastical fans cry out for stories that celebrate the human spirit. Why do we love these stories? And how do different fan trends, even across whole generations, keep swerving between positive portrayals and other stories that may be called “realistic” or else “cynical”?

#229: Herbal Wisdom, Taoist Principles & Essential Travel Health: The Classical Medicine Guide with Ann Cecil-Sterman

What a profound conversation this was—a real unpacking of principles, where the philosophical meets the deeply practical.   The core of this whole thing, as we dug into with Ann Cecil-Sterman, revolves around the true action of herbs, which—from the Taoist lineage we follow—comes down to pure taste, not just some chemical breakdown. It's that deeper "flavor sensing in the stomach." My journey with Superfeast has been about living the great Yin-Yang puzzle: holding the intense contrast between deep Taoist tradition and the necessary reductionist language for Western practitioners. That dance is what yields the "pearls of reciprocity"—the philosophical gifts you get from the endeavor itself.   On a much deeper, personal layer, we dove into the conversation of living one's true blueprint—that invisible path that keeps calling you—and the absolute non-negotiable commitment to staying engaged with your purpose, no matter what external role the world tries to pin on you (like "CEO").   Finally, we hit the essential travel principles. Ann gave a brilliant reminder about how much flying is a test of our fluids. To counter the hyper-dry, sterile air of planes, the trick isn't just plain water (which is a clearer that goes straight through), but what we call slow fluids or wet food (think congees, soups, stews) to ensure that constant, deep hydration. It also requires the mental discipline of non-busyness: cultivating stillness and focusing on your main job rather than jumping into "tourist mode." It's about being a "Fremen flyer" and absorbing the wisdom of a place by simply being still. If you're ready for a reminder to stay engaged with your deepest purpose and learn essential travel health principles, this episode is for you.   Takeaways: [00:00:28] Herbal Action is Taste-Governed: In Classical Chinese Medicine, herbs act mainly through taste and the stomach's "flavor sensing," not chemical constituents alone. [00:03:46] The Yin-Yang Puzzle in Business: Balancing Taoist tradition with Western chemical language creates "pearls of reciprocity"—unexpected philosophical rewards. [00:04:21] Living Your True Blueprint: Stay aligned with your personal purpose and express it in any role, even as a CEO. [00:10:30] Travel's Primary Rule: Hydration: Air travel severely depletes fluids due to dry cabin air, making deep, constant hydration essential. [00:11:02] Mindful Travel: Cultivate Stillness: Avoid over-scheduling; cultivate stillness, meditate, and stay focused on your core purpose while traveling. [00:12:04] Classical Medicine's 30-Year Plan: Three stages—10 years of practice, 10 years of writing, and 10 years of mentoring new teachers. [00:17:11] Water is a "Clearer," Not a "Hydrator": Plain water flushes waste quickly but does not provide deep, lasting hydration. [00:17:55] The Power of Wet Food (Slow Fluids): Soups, congees, and stews support deep hydration through slow digestive absorption.   Practical Engagement: Prioritize Slow Fluids: Especially before and during travel, replace plain water with "slow fluids" or wet foods like congees, porridges, soups, or stews to ensure deep, sustained hydration. Practice Mindful Travel: When you travel, limit your scheduled activities (e.g., "one museum" rule) to cultivate stillness, meditate, and focus on your core purpose rather than jumping into "tourist mode." Sip, Don't Gulp: If drinking plain water on a plane, keep it coming in small sips continuously throughout the flight, not in large, isolated glasses. Cover Your Skin: Treat flying like being a "Fremen flyer." Wear covering clothes to protect your skin and minimize moisture loss in the dry cabin air.   Resources Classical Medicine Academy: anncecilsterman.com Instagram: Follow @anncecilsterman on instagram for updates.

At the time of this recording, it was my birthday, and - in true Hobbit fashion - I'm giving YOU the gift of diving into the vast deserts of Dune with the always insightful Richard Rohlin! In this impromptu episode, we're unpacking Denis Villeneuve's Dune films—praising the awe-inspiring visuals, iconic performances, and meticulous attention to detail in part one while grappling with the pacing, missing lore, and religious undertones in part two. From the pulse-pounding shield fighting to the enigma of spice and its place in Frank Herbert's epic world-building, we tackle it all. We discuss Paul Atreides' journey, the complexities of messianic archetypes, and whether Dune truly captures Herbert's layered philosophical and ecological themes—or if Hollywood just can't do religion justice. Plus, there's plenty of nerdery, from Warhammer 40K parallels to pondering the real Kwisatz Haderach (hint: Duncan Idaho fans, this one's for you).

Think the darkness of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with the expansive scale of THE TWO TOWERS and you'll have an idea of the second chapter of Paul Atreides' (Timothee Chalamet) journey from naive boy to insecure, megalomaniacal messianic cult leader. Via spice-driven hallucinations, Paul sees his desert planet of Arrakis, along with everyone he's ever loved, burned to ash via thermonuclear war. In a desperate attempt to stave off this future, he learns the way of the sand-dwelling Fremen people to gain their trust and help in his holy? crusade. This is the kind of movie I want 100+ million-dollar movies to be: artistically fearless on a gargantuan, sandworm-sized scale. As thoughtful as it is simply fucking entertaining. DUNE: PART 2 is available to stream on Max and Netflix. It's available to purchase for home video on 4K, Bluray & DVD. And if you're lucky, I still see some options for a theatrical viewing, if you just have to catch Chalamet's fluffy hair on the big screen. --- Follow The Movies on social media: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

Back in 2018, I interviewed language creator David J. Peterson about how he invented Dothraki for Game of Thrones and other fictional languages in fantasy worlds. David and his wife Jessie just finished a huge project – developing the Fremen language for Dune: Part Two. I talk with the couple about their creative process and the challenge of imagining simple English phrases in the Chakobsa language that Frank Herbert imagined in his Dune novels. We also hear my 2018 episode, “Do You Speak Conlang?” where I also talked with Marc Okrand, inventor of the Klingon language, and Robyn Stewart, a language consultant for Star Trek: Discovery. Plus, Jen Usellis -- a.k.a. Klingon Pop Warrior -- will give you a serious case of earworms (not the kind from Wrath of Khan.) For more episodes about Dune, check out my 2017 episode The Book of Dune, where I talked with Muslim fans of the series about the way Frank Herbert incorporated aspects of Islam into the books. And in 2021, I did an episode called The Ecology of Dune where I looked at the environmental messages in the books and whether Frank Herbert's environmental sensibilities still hold up today. Prepare yourself for the Dune-versation! (Sorry.) The guys liked Dune 2 and Denis Villeneuve proved that he "got" what made Dune great. But of course, the fun of a movie discussion is often in what you hate: Brian really disliked pouty Zendaya and the northern "modernist" Fremen. But Nate says there was nothing wrong with Chani's character that couldn't be fixed (and in fact, an amazing character might exist on the cutting room floor). If only Paul had chosen to implicate Chani in his decision to become Lisan al-Gaib, instead of relying on the deus ex machina of her saving him! They discuss scenes that were great (opening scene), scenes that fell flat (Feyd Ratha fight), prophecies, and everything in between (Frank Herbert's obsession with peyote and Lawrence of Arabia). The guys also announce the next LAMPC (Shawshank Redemption), how the Boys in a Boat movie was fine on its own but really disappointing if you had read the book, and how we live in a place where airplanes have their wheels fall off mid-flight. #SASF #StoriesAreSoulFood #Dune #Dune2 #Zendaya #Chani #FrankHerbert #LisanAlGaib #Stilgar

Talking ‘Dune': Book and Movies

The Book Review

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2024 39:04

Frank Herbert's epic novel “Dune” and its successors have been entrenched in the science fiction and fantasy canon for almost six decades, a rite of passage for proudly nerdy readers across the generations. But “Dune” is experiencing a broader cultural resurgence at the moment thanks to Denis Villeneuve's recent film adaptations starring Timothée Chalamet. (Part 2 is in theaters now.)This week on the podcast, Gilbert Cruz talks to The Times's critic Alissa Wilkinson, who covers movies, culture and religion, about Herbert's novel, Villeneuve's films and the enduring hold of Fremen lore on the audience's imagination.“There's a couple things that I think are really unsettling in ‘Dune,'” Wilkinson says. “One is, the vision of Frank Herbert was, I believe, to basically write a book that questioned authoritarians and hero mythology genuinely, across the board. Any kind of a hero figure he is proposing will always have things and people come up alongside that hero figure that distort their influence. Even if they intend well, if they're benevolent, there's still all of this really awful stuff that comes along with it. So Paul is a messiah figure — we believe he wants good things for most of the book — and then he turns on a dime or it feels like he might be turning on a dime. You can never quite tell where anyone stands in this book. And I think that is unsettling, especially because so many of the other kinds of things that we watch — the superhero movies, “Star Wars,” whatever — there's a clear-cut good and evil fight going on. Good and evil don't really exist in ‘Dune.'”We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. You can send them to books@nytimes.com.
