At the time of this recording, it was my birthday, and - in true Hobbit fashion - I'm giving YOU the gift of diving into the vast deserts of Dune with the always insightful Richard Rohlin! In this impromptu episode, we're unpacking Denis Villeneuve's Dune films—praising the awe-inspiring visuals, iconic performances, and meticulous attention to detail in part one while grappling with the pacing, missing lore, and religious undertones in part two. From the pulse-pounding shield fighting to the enigma of spice and its place in Frank Herbert's epic world-building, we tackle it all. We discuss Paul Atreides' journey, the complexities of messianic archetypes, and whether Dune truly captures Herbert's layered philosophical and ecological themes—or if Hollywood just can't do religion justice. Plus, there's plenty of nerdery, from Warhammer 40K parallels to pondering the real Kwisatz Haderach (hint: Duncan Idaho fans, this one's for you).

I continue covering this year's Oscars nominees for Best Picture with Denis Villeneuve's DUNE: PART 2, the continuation of Villeneuve's attempt to create high-minded blockbuster fantasy to a new generation. When I was a kid, I had LORD OF THE RINGS. As a 30-year-old, I have this. Think the darkness of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with the expansive scale of THE TWO TOWERS and you'll have an idea of the second chapter of Paul Atreides' (Timothee Chalamet) journey from naive boy to insecure, megalomaniacal messianic cult leader. Via spice-driven hallucinations, Paul sees his desert planet of Arrakis, along with everyone he's ever loved, burned to ash via thermonuclear war. In a desperate attempt to stave off this future, he learns the way of the sand-dwelling Fremen people to gain their trust and help in his holy? crusade. This is the kind of movie I want 100+ million-dollar movies to be: artistically fearless on a gargantuan, sandworm-sized scale. As thoughtful as it is simply fucking entertaining. DUNE: PART 2 is available to stream on Max and Netflix. It's available to purchase for home video on 4K, Bluray & DVD. And if you're lucky, I still see some options for a theatrical viewing, if you just have to catch Chalamet's fluffy hair on the big screen. --- Follow The Movies on social media: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

The Amalekites (Exodus): Battles, struggles, conflict, and strife are just part of the fabric of this broken world. As followers of Jesus, how do we fight our battles? When the Amalekites attacked the Israelites at Rephidim, the people, led by Joshua, had to fight. But the Lord brought the victory through the intercession of Moses, acting as a mediator. In our battles, we must trust our Mediator, lean on our friends, and find our victory in Yahweh Nissi (the Lord is my Banner). Recorded on Dec 1, 2024, on Exodus 17:8-16 by Pastor David Parks. This message is part of our Exodus series called Journey to Freedom. Exodus is a story of liberation — of God working to rescue and redeem a people for himself, freeing them from slavery and leading them to the land he promised to the family of Abraham and Sarah. Exodus is also a picture of the gospel and the Christian life. In Christ, we, too, are freed from captivity to sin and death and led through the wilderness of life by God's Word and Presence as we make our way to the Promised Land of the world to come. Join us as we make this journey to find true and lasting freedom. Sermon Transcript So, we're working through the book of Exodus in a sermon series called Journey to Freedom. Exodus is a story of liberation, of God rescuing and redeeming a people for himself. After freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, Yahweh God led them through the desert wilderness by his word given through the prophet Moses and by his own holy Presence. For the last three weeks, we saw three tests in the desert on the way to Mount Sinai designed to teach the Israelites to listen to God, obey his word, and learn to follow his way (whether they understood it or not). But the Israelites didn't pass any of the tests. In our text for today, the Israelites don't just have a need; they're in real danger when the Amalekites come and attack them. Have you ever felt like you were in a battle? Have you ever realized you needed God to save you? Battles, struggles, conflict, and strife are just part of the fabric of this broken world. Sometimes, there's real violence, but sometimes, the battle is in your mind, heart, or relationships. Sometimes, the battle is physical, but often, it's spiritual, too. As God's people, as followers of Jesus, how do we fight? How do we win? Our text today offers many lessons on what to do on the day of battle. If you have your Bible/app, please open it to Exodus 17:8. Exodus 17:8–9 (NIV), “8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” It turns out there were more dangers in the world than Pharaoh and his army. Now, we know four things about the Amalekites: First, they descended from Esau, Jacob's brother, so they were distant cousins of the Israelites. They should've been allies, not enemies. They should've helped Israel, not come to steal, kill, and destroy. Second, they lived in the desert. The Israelites struggled to survive, but the Amalekites knew what they were doing. They were like the Fremen in Dune. These were desert people, which didn't bode well for a battle with them in their home. Third, the Amalekites carried out this unprovoked attack on the Israelites here at Rephidim. Maybe they heard this huge mass of people, animals, and possessions had somehow escaped Egypt and thought they'd be an easy target. Or maybe this was just a normal day for violent people who survived in a tough environment by being tougher than anyone or anything else. (Maybe both?) Later, Moses reminded the Israelites about this attack, saying, “When you were weary and worn out, they [Amalekites] met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.” (Dt 25:18). Fourth, the Amalekites would be enemies of Israel for hundreds of years — all through the time of the Judges a...

The story intensifies as Paul's destiny as a prophesied leader entwines more deeply with the ecological and political upheaval on Arrakis. The struggle for control of the planet and its invaluable resource, spice, come to a head, involving various factions like the Harkonnens, the Emperor, and other major houses of the Landsraad.Join us and hear Pete and Sidey bemoan to the very underwhelming performance of a Bad Dads favourite, Mr Christopher Walken. There is actually lots to like here. The themes of Dune: Part Two continue to explore ecological stewardship, the messianic complex, and the interplay between power, religion, and destiny. The political intrigue that mirrors many real-world issues, resonating with audiences through its portrayal of resource-driven conflicts and colonial dynamics. But that Christopher Walken performance, what a let down!We love to hear from our listeners! David and his wife Jessie just finished a huge project – developing the Fremen language for Dune: Part Two. I talk with the couple about their creative process and the challenge of imagining simple English phrases in the Chakobsa language that Frank Herbert imagined in his Dune novels. We also hear my 2018 episode, “Do You Speak Conlang?” where I also talked with Marc Okrand, inventor of the Klingon language, and Robyn Stewart, a language consultant for Star Trek: Discovery. Prepare yourself for the Dune-versation! (Sorry.) The guys liked Dune 2 and Denis Villeneuve proved that he "got" what made Dune great. But of course, the fun of a movie discussion is often in what you hate: Brian really disliked pouty Zendaya and the northern "modernist" Fremen. But Nate says there was nothing wrong with Chani's character that couldn't be fixed (and in fact, an amazing character might exist on the cutting room floor). If only Paul had chosen to implicate Chani in his decision to become Lisan al-Gaib, instead of relying on the deus ex machina of her saving him! They discuss scenes that were great (opening scene), scenes that fell flat (Feyd Ratha fight), prophecies, and everything in between (Frank Herbert's obsession with peyote and Lawrence of Arabia). The guys also announce the next LAMPC (Shawshank Redemption), how the Boys in a Boat movie was fine on its own but really disappointing if you had read the book, and how we live in a place where airplanes have their wheels fall off mid-flight. #SASF #StoriesAreSoulFood #Dune #Dune2 #Zendaya #Chani #FrankHerbert #LisanAlGaib #Stilgar

Matthew recently participated in an in-depth analysis of Dune: Part Two on The Film Board podcast, also part of the TruStory FM entertainment podcast network. We're thrilled to share this discussion here, originally recorded for The Film Board, with our audience. In the vast expanse of cinematic storytelling, few tales grip the imagination quite like Frank Herbert's "Dune." With Denis Villeneuve's vision continuing to unfold in Dune: Part Two, The Film Board, including Pete Wright, Steve Sarmento, and our own Matthew Fox, gathered to dissect the intricate layers of prophecy, power, and the dangers of messianic zeal.As they ventured through the dunes of Arrakis, the conversation delved into the blurred lines between hero and conqueror, mirroring the mirages that haunt the desert planet. They explored Paul Atreides' struggle with his destiny against the backdrop of religious manipulation, a theme that echoes Herbert's foresight into the weaponization of belief systems.Under Villeneuve's direction, the narrative expands, bringing Chani to the forefront as a beacon of rationality in the midst of fanaticism's storm. Her perspective not only challenges Paul but also the audience, compelling a confrontation with the enticing trap of messianic figures.Drawing parallels between Herbert's universe and our own, The Film Board analyzed the Abrahamic origins of the messianic archetype, connecting the Fremen's zeal to the tangible intricacies of organized religion and the dynamics of indigenous movements.Ultimately, Dune: Part Two stands as a reflection of our own societal battles with faith, authority, and the repercussions of unbridled conviction. As the discussion wrapped up and the metaphorical twin moons of discourse and introspection set, The Film Board left listeners with a lingering question: In the grand narrative of destiny, do we exercise choice, or are we simply caught in the unstoppable current of fate? Talking ‘Dune': Book and Movies

The Book Review

Frank Herbert's epic novel “Dune” and its successors have been entrenched in the science fiction and fantasy canon for almost six decades, a rite of passage for proudly nerdy readers across the generations. But “Dune” is experiencing a broader cultural resurgence at the moment thanks to Denis Villeneuve's recent film adaptations starring Timothée Chalamet. (Part 2 is in theaters now.)This week on the podcast, Gilbert Cruz talks to The Times's critic Alissa Wilkinson, who covers movies, culture and religion, about Herbert's novel, Villeneuve's films and the enduring hold of Fremen lore on the audience's imagination.“There's a couple things that I think are really unsettling in ‘Dune,'” Wilkinson says. “One is, the vision of Frank Herbert was, I believe, to basically write a book that questioned authoritarians and hero mythology genuinely, across the board. Any kind of a hero figure he is proposing will always have things and people come up alongside that hero figure that distort their influence. Even if they intend well, if they're benevolent, there's still all of this really awful stuff that comes along with it. So Paul is a messiah figure — we believe he wants good things for most of the book — and then he turns on a dime or it feels like he might be turning on a dime. You can never quite tell where anyone stands in this book. And I think that is unsettling, especially because so many of the other kinds of things that we watch — the superhero movies, “Star Wars,” whatever — there's a clear-cut good and evil fight going on. Good and evil don't really exist in ‘Dune.'”We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. You can send them to books@nytimes.com.
