What is the IMF?The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provides aid to developing countries to promote global economic and monetary growth. IMF investments and loans can significantly impact the ability of developing countries to improve climate resilience. Most directly, reforms to the IMF can allow developing countries to invest more in climate resilience and disincentivize fossil fuel production. How does the IMF affect the climate crisis?According to critics, the IMF's Climate Change Strategy inadvertently worsens the climate crisis and amplifies financial risk. Specifically:1. Prohibitively high IMF borrowing rates for developing countries block vital investments in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and recovery and trap Global South nations in a cycle of escalating climate risks and mounting debts.2. IMF loan conditions and policy advice that make fossil fuel production more profitable enable the expansion of oil, gas, and coal, prolonging dangerous global heating. What can be done to reform the IMF?In a report issued this month, the UC Berkeley Center for Law, Energy & Environment (CLEE) suggested the following reforms:Form a Climate Advisory Group consisting of diverse external experts to recommend updates to the IMF's Climate Change Strategy and adopt legal requirements for timely IMF action.Reform longstanding IMF practices that exacerbate risk by (1) improving climate-related risk assessment, (2) expanding climate finance and alleviating debt distress in developing countries, and (3) curtailing fossil fuel profitability. The CLEE report also envisions a significant role for the US, as the largest shareholder in the IMF with significant influence, including championing ambitious IMF reform on the global stage, leading by example, addressing climate change domestically and allocating new resources to support climate resilience in developing countries, highlighting the financial threat posed by the IMF status quo and actively participating in international dialogue, research, and analysis related to climate-related financial risk. The IMF controls almost $1 trillion in assets and could be a linchpin for climate action in support of worldwide economic stability. About our GuestKelly Varian is a policy analyst working at UC Berkeley Law. She has a Master of Public Affairs degree from UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy and a decade of experience in the social sector. In her current role as a Climate Policy Analyst at UC Berkeley's Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment, she leads research to design equitable policies to mitigate climate-related financial risk.ResourcesCLEE, Monetary Fund Reform for Climate Resilience (2023)Bridgetown Initiative For a transcript of this episode, please visit https://climatebreak.org/international-monetary-fund-reform-with-kelly-varian/
Summary: Get those reading glasses on and join us for some extra nerdy energy this week, friends! Holly and Devin discuss Modern Classics today - those works post World War II that created pivot points in the cannon for the Thriller and Romance genres. In this era, ideas about race, gender and class are shifting as readers broadened their understanding of an interconnected world. Sexual liberation and violent horrors that had previously been viewed as outrageous become commonplace, so of course both our hosts have a blast this episode! Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:02): Holly discussed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, a Nordic crime fiction novel following Mikael Blomkvist (journalist and publisher) and Lisbeth Salander (a computer hacker) as they investigate the disappearance of a woman 40 years ago. Together, Blomkvist and Salander uncover the secrets of the woman's family through the darkest corners of Swedish society. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel delves into themes of violence, sexual abuse, and family secrets. It explores how individuals and families can hide dark and painful truths, often at great cost including corruption and financial malfeasance. Lisbeth is a central character who represents female empowerment; her intelligence, resilience and capacity for self-defense are key elements in the story. Larsson explores issues of gender and the societal treatment of women. This novel had a significant cultural impact and made important contributions to the mystery and thriller genres. Specifically, the complex female protagonist, darker themes, moral ambiguity and critique of society are now common in the genre, begun by Larsson in 2005. The Heart (20:31): Devin discussed The Lion's Daughter by Loretta Chase, a bodice-ripper romance from 1992 following the fiery-haired and -tempered Esme Brentmore as she works to avenge her father's (supposed) murder, entangled all the way with the scoundrel and handsome rake, Varian St. George. They roam the country of Albania as fiendish plots and unspoken feelings bring them together and threaten to tear them apart. Devin's key takeaways were: This novel and others by Chase are part of the bodice-ripper romance era (think: woman in silk dress laid sensually in a field with her blouse exposing ample cleavage). Bodice Rippers are known for “exotic” locations, sexually explicit material, heroines with careers outside of housewife/mother who are also virginal yet fierce and handsome alpha males bent on seducing and dominating that woman. Chase brings all the above tropes to the table with the country of Albania as the background. Albanian herself, Chase adds a real air of authenticity to Esme, who was born and raised in Albania by her English father, Jason, and to many of the colorful side characters. The romance in this novel is filled with delightful tension (once you become aware that Esme is over 18 and there is therefore no statutory rape going on - yikes) and a lot of “I must have you” energy. Esme is witty, combative, and quick to anger. Varian is immature, selfish, and devastatingly charming (also known as a fuckboi). Hot On the Shelf (48:50): Holly: Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton Devin: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros What's Making Our Hearts Race (53:09): Holly: Stray, the video game Devin: Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Tom in for Nick and joined by the Racing Post's Lee Mottershead. We predominantly look ahead the first classics of the season but do first hear Lee's thoughts on the white paper and what the industry could and should be doing to give more protection to punters. Roger Varian is along to touch on his Guineas team, two in the 2000 and a sole representative in the 1000. James Doyle will partner Noble Style on Saturday, even though he rode Silver Knott in a racecourse gallop and he tells us why. Nick joins us from Kentucky talking to Charlie O'Connor from Coolmore America and we check in with Newtown Stud and ITBA Chair Cathy Grassick in our regular Tuesday bloodstock segment in association with Weatherbys.
Nick is joined by RTE and RTV analyst and host Jane Mangan to discuss the latest news and events from around the racing world. They reflect on a mighty performance in the Nell Gwyn from Mammas Girl, whose rider Sean Levey joins the show with some insight into the strength of the horse and the race. Nick catches up with Rodgie Kavanagh, who turned 42,000 into 625k at the Craven Breeze-up last night. With news that the White Paper will likely be released next Thursday, gambling industry expert Neil Channing pops in for a quick chat, while Levy Board CEO Alan Delmonte gives notice of a transparency initiative which will show Levy board contributions to each individual race. Alistair Gordon talks us through the catalogue for the South African National Yearling sale, while Kate Grimwade tells Nick about her London Marathon training in aid of Racing Welfare and slips in some cheeky betting advice from the Varian stable.

The Catching Point Transformation is founded on humanizing those who struggle with weight loss and offering a new way.Dr. Prologo's work further led to the identification of the catching point—a clear pivot point beyond which calorie restriction and exercise are easier for patients. This debut narrative non-fiction focuses on the following main points:• Obese and overweight patients have a host of variables that block them from losing weight on their own. These cannot be overcome with "willpower." (metabolic changes, hunger hormones, adiposopathy, gut microbiota, and exercise capacities).• Every static diet schedule ignores these variables and drives the overweight/obese person straight into a wall every time. This is why the failure rate with these programs is so high.• The Catching Point Transformation pays direct attention to managing these blocks, shifts right around them, and delivers the patient a NEW OUTCOME.• How? By inducing internal body restructuring with changes harnessed during recovery. Literally changing the person into another person who doesn't struggle with clean living. Recovery cannot be written into a static program and to date has been ignored. It requires an understanding of biofeedback variables, individuality, fluidity, supplementation, and adding in diet components.• The final chapters talk about medical interventions that are available in 2021/2022.Beyond his new book, Dr. Prologo's research has established percutaneous cryo-neurolysis (freezing of nerves with imaging guidance) as a novel treatment for cancer patients with pain, a new option to block hunger for those wishing to diet, in the management of phantom limb pain for injured veterans, and even for treatment of premature ejaculation in men (further proving that mind over matter is nonsense).• The hunger nerve is freezing. This blocks hunger and allows people to diet. It also underpins and supports the claim that "mind over matter is bulls$%#." Dr. Prologo was the first on the planet to do this procedure (first revealed on the Megyn Kelly Show). Dr. Prologo has generated additional research and follow-up regarding this procedure, which has not been released to Media yet, but we can discuss it.More about Dr. Prologo• Chair of the SIR Pain Management Council, Consultant to Boston Scientific and Varian [and others], invited speaker and writer around the world, invited editor to prestigious journals on the topic of freezing and killing cancer.• Congress has asked him to debrief the United States on multiple occasions regarding these techniques as alternative opioids.• Dr. Prologo was the first boots on the ground in East Africa to develop and bring interventional radiology to hundreds of millions of people otherwise dying from things solved here as an annoyance.• Real amateur MMA career and jiujitsu with muay thai training experience. (trained at Strongstyle [same gym as Stipe Miocic)• Has been recognized nationally and internationally for his work, including features on The Today Show, in the Washington Post, on Capitol Hill, numerous peer-reviewed journal publications, countless web-based invited expert articles, and much more.• Fat-shaming: a proclamation that fat-shaming is the last accepted prejudice.Website/Social linkswww.drprologo.com
