On today's podcast I celebrate the 75th birthday of Elvis Presley with a conversation with his cousin, Edie Hand who shares unique insights into his life, the humble beginnings that shaped him and her book, 'The Genuine Elvis' . Edie, who grew up in a small town called Burnout in Alabama is an author, an actress, a publisher and a movie producer. In her life she has suffered some huge setbacks but with "true grit" she has powered through and enjoyed considerable success. Her experiences led her to founding the Edie Hand Foundation and an organisation called 'Women of True Grit' to support and inspire women who have suffered trauma in their lives. She chats about her life, her career and at the tender age of 72 she shares her perspective on this "season" as she calls it. Edie Hand’s legacy is her “Women of True Grit” series (www.ediehand.com), inspiring stories of women sharing their stories and passion from the trials they face to their triumphs. Edie’s books speak about building your pearls of life and having the grit to do hard things. Growing up in Alabama Edie's early life was shaped by the tragic loss of her three young brothers and she battled cancer three times. Edie is a successful author, speaker, business woman, a doting mother and the cousin of the legendary Elvis Presley. Edie shares, "God gave me the wisdom of my grandmother’s 'pearls of hope.' Edie reflects, “I think I learned the most from Elvis about the spirit of giving. Elvis gave a yacht to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and I thought, “Wow, I want to be able to make a difference like that.” Edie founded the Edie Hand Foundation after the loss of her three young brothers and her battles with cancer and she continues to raise funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Edie’s colorful stories and her pearls of wisdom are life lessons on how to turn hard things into beautiful situations. Brenda and Shelley cried during the first ten minutes of Edie's interview: her poignant life story as an overcomer and her faith journey are so deeply touching. This time of year, we’re quite excited about summer tours and not giving Christmas a second thought.  Some people in Nashville are definitely thinking about the holidays during the taping of two new shows hosted by author Edie Hand for broadcast later this year.

Well over thirty years have gone by since the King of Rock and Roll passed away, but his legacy still lives on.  His cousin and noted author Edie Hand got together with Ronnie McDowell and Joe Meador to put together a collection of stories never before heard outside Elvis’ friends and family.  Fans came together for a book signing event at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum bookstore for a few songs and autographs.

The Holiday season is a very special time for many families, We headed to Dora, Alabama to check out a new show behind the scenes, Holiday Memories with Miss Edie and Friends, which captured a warm winter charm and guest starred a few favorite country artists.
