In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Eliza Parker. Eliza's work helping babies sleep, move, and feel better revolves around her respect for babies and toddlers as whole people who enter the world aware, desiring to communicate and learn, and with the ability to process and self-heal within relationship. Her Conscious Baby practice employs unique approaches to non-cry-it-out sleep, baby-led milestone development, healing birth trauma, and parental attunement to non-verbal cues and crying. She is a certified Aware Parenting Instructor, Infant Developmental Movement Educator, Body-Mind Centering®Practitioner, and trained Feldenkrais® practitioner. Her life-changing perspectives and respectful solutions toward common parenting challenges transcend “typical” parenting advice. In this episode, Eliza shares how she discovered Aware Parenting and what she most loves about this approach. We talk about the need to treat babies as people and to recognise that they are born with awareness, consciousness, and understanding emotion, as well as how to heal from stress and trauma and how to communicate with us. We discuss how to learn to tune in to the communication of babies and young children's behaviour and to understand the meaning of their crying. Eliza describes how this often reflects their birth stories and how we can support babies to sleep by allowing them to release and heal the stress of their early experiences. We talk about how to offer the balance of attention to support healing of stress and trauma. Today, I get to speak to the absolutely brilliant Marion Rose. Marion Rose, PhD, is the co-author of the bestselling 'Raising Resilient and Compassionate Children - A Parent's Guide to Understanding Behaviour, Feelings and Relationships'. She has also written three other books on Aware Parenting and Psychospiritual Parenting which are coming out this year. Marion has been studying psychology and consciousness since 1987 and has a PhD on postnatal depression and the mother-infant relationship from Cambridge University. She researched infant development as a post-Doctoral Research Fellow and taught MA students, as well working as a Psychosynthesis psychotherapist. Marion has been practicing Aware Parenting since 2002, and she is also the founder of The Marion Method, which is a psychospiritual paradigm of parenting, reparenting and reculturing. She offers online courses and mentoring, including for people who want to become Aware Parenting instructors and Marion Method mentors. She believes that these two paradigms are part of creating systemic change away from The Disconnected Domination Culture. Today we dig into the connections between emotions, the psyche, sleep and behavior in babies and toddlers AND adults. Eliza Parker, the woman behind ConsiousBaby.com, shares her expertise on how sleep for little ones is connected to everything else, and how we (as highly sensitive parents) can learn to recognize the innate abilities of babies and toddlers for coping with birth, trauma, experiences, feelings and stimulation. This conversation is not just for parents (but it WILL inform the the highly sensitive parent or the parent of a highly sensitive child). While speaking with Eliza, I noticed so many "ah-ha's" for myself! Sleep, self-regulation and our ability to cope with life experiences are tools that all highly sensitive people need. In many ways, this conversation piggy-back's off the last two episodes with Sukie Baxter and our chats about how the nervous system, emotions and cultural expectations are all related.
