Few hard rock bands lived the life portrayed in their songs as authentically as Guns N' Roses. Singer Axl Rose was driven by deep-seated demons that drove the creation of his band's legendary debut album, Appetite For Destruction, as well as his legendary bad behavior. His band was hardly any different. Nearly dysfunctional from drug use and excess, their record label feared they would all die before their first album was even released. In the 1940s and 50s there was the great American comic book scare. Many serious adults warned that comic books were turning young people into illiterate, criminally violent, sexually deviant political extremists. There were several editorials in newspapers that argued as much. There were groups who organized literal comic book burnings. Local jurisdictions passed laws to limit the sale of comic books. There was even a televised congressional hearing on comic books by the United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. This was a widespread phenomena that can't be laid at the feet of any one person. But there is one person who did more than anyone to legitimize this panic: Dr. Fredric Wertham. He was a well-credentialed German-American psychiatrist best known for his anti-comics book Seduction of the Innocent: The Influence of Comic Books on Today's Youth. The scientific worthlessness of Wertham's theories has been clear to historians of comic books and even some of his contemporaries. However, it wasn't until 2012, three decades after his death, that the full extent of the worthlessness of his anti-comic book work was revealed. After a historian was able to read his raw clinical notes for the first time, it was discovered that many claims in his book Seduction of the Innocent were wholly fabricated. His anti-comic book claims weren't merely the product of sloppy science, but lies and distortions. The Life of Riley was a popular series that was praised for its humor and its realistic portrayal of working-class life. The series was also notable for its catchphrase, "What a revoltin' development this is!" The series was created by James Thurber and Elliott Nugent, and it was produced by Fred Coe. In Part V, we get deeper into the psychological parallels between the psychology of street gangs and modern digital delinquents in today's "Gamer Gangs" and how both are quite similar. We will also explore the direct connections historically between our corrupt politicians and street gangs and how gangs can be the nucleus for the larger street mob events too.*Source: "the gang: a study of 1,313 gangs in Chicago" by Frederic M. In November 1977, DC Comics made a proclamation that would change the entire comic book publishing industry. Only, it didn't happen. Instead of an explosion of comics, DC Comics suffered a massive implosion. But does this make DC Comics a loser, or was it just ahead of its time? Our society, regards, children is innocent, kind, and vulnerable. But when children commit horrendous, criminal acts, it is some of the most shocking and disturbing things we can imagine. These criminal acts stand in direct contrast to social perceptions, and they result in a new reality for each of us, that's very difficult to reconcile. Let's talk about juvenile delinquency. ======================================= Get 10% Off your TruthFinder subscription with code EVIL10 at checkout: https://truthfinder.pxf.io/c/3466408/1404760/15694

We're jumping in our time machine and headed back to the year 1954 to discuss the events that lead to the comic book version of the parental advisory sticker. Join us for a special episode dedicated to the history of the Comics Code Authority! The audio used in this episode is from the 1955 broadcast called Confidential File: Horror Comic Books! as well as from the 1954 Senate Subcommittee Hearing into Juvenile Delinquency. Both have entered the public domain and are being used here for educational purposes.
ADHD is a rising diagnosis in our society. Tune in to learn more about the possible causes hidden at the root of ADHD, including heavy metals.Every day we are exposed to toxins from our environment. We may ingest lead and copper from drinking water, phosphate from processed food and soda, various synthetic chemicals from plastic food containers, and pesticides from fruits and vegetables. Both natural heavy metals and man-made chemicals disrupt hormones and brain development. The brain, especially the developing brain, is very vulnerable to contaminants because of its large size and its high concentration of fats which serve as a reservoir for toxicants to build up. This episode will explain the role that heavy metals and environmental toxins play in ADHD.In January 2016, there was a declared state of emergency in Flint, Michigan where thousands of residents were exposed to high levels of lead in their drinking water. The corrosive water from the Flint River caused lead from old water pipes to leach into the water supply, putting up to 12,000 children at risk of consuming dangerous levels of lead. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage and even death, and growing children are especially susceptible to its poisonous effects. Even low blood lead levels reduce IQ, the ability to pay attention, motor function, and academic achievement.Since lead poisoning causes cognitive, motor, and behavioral changes, it is not surprising that it also causes ADHD. Lead exposure is estimated to account for 290,000 excess cases of ADHD in US children (Braun et al., 2006). A study on 270 mother-child pairs in Belgium found that doubling prenatal lead exposure (measured in cord blood) was associated with a more than three times higher risk for hyperactivity in boys and girls at age 7-8 (Sioen et al., 2013). A larger study on almost 5,000 US children aged 4-15 found children with the highest blood lead levels were over four times as likely to have ADHD as children with the lowest blood lead levels (Braun et al., 2006).MRI scans from participants of the Cincinnati Lead Study had striking results: childhood lead exposure was associated with brain volume loss in adulthood. Individuals with higher blood lead levels as children had less gray matter in some brain areas. The main brain region affected was the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for executive function, behavioral regulation, and fine motor control (Cecil et al., 2008).Copper is an essential trace mineral we must consume from our food supply. It is found in oysters and other shellfish, whole grains, beans, nuts, and potatoes. Like lead, copper can leach into the water supply when copper pipes corrode. One of copper's roles in the body is to help produce dopamine, the neurotransmitter that provides alertness. However, too much copper creates an excess of dopamine leading to an excess of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. High levels of these neurotransmitters lead to symptoms similar to ADHD symptoms: hyperactivity, impulsivity, agitation, irritability, and aggressiveness. In children with excess copper, stimulant medications don't work as well and tend to cause side effects (agitation, anxiousness, change in sleep and appetite). Most ADHD medications work by increasing levels of dopamine, intensifying the effects of excess copper. In addition, excess copper blocks the production of serotonin, a mood-balancing neurotransmitter. This triggers emotional, mental, and behavioral problems, from depression and anxiety to paranoia and psychosis. The neurotoxic effects of excess copper are well known and a few studies have assessed copper's role in ADHD symptoms. When researchers compared copper levels in 58 ADHD children to levels in 50 control children, they observed that copper levels were higher in ADHD children. ADHD children also had a higher copper-to-zinc ratio that positively correlated with teacher-rated inattention Now let's move into Phosphate. Phosphate is a charged particle (an electrolyte) that contains phosphorus. Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body (the first is calcium). Phosphorus is a building block for bones and about 85% of total body phosphorus is found in the bones. Deficiencies are rare because phosphorus is naturally abundant in protein-rich foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, and milk products as well as in nuts, legumes, cereals, and grains. Although phosphorus is an essential nutrient, too much can be problematic. The phosphate content of processed foods is much higher than that of natural foods because phosphates are commonly used as additives and preservatives in food production. Our daily intake of phosphate food additives has more than doubled since the 1990's (Ritz et al., 2012). Phosphorus, especially the form found in processed meats, canned fish, baked goods, and soda is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream so levels can rise rapidly.Phosphorus reduces the absorption of other vital nutrients, many of which ADHD children are deficient in to begin with. For instance, too much phosphorus can lower calcium levels. High phosphorus coupled with low calcium intake leads to poor bone health. The typical American diet contains two to four times more phosphorus than calcium and soda is often a major contributor to this imbalance. In the body, phosphorus and magnesium bind together, making both minerals unavailable for absorption. This is most apparent when magnesium consumption is low and intake of phosphorus is high. Researchers have found that adding Pepsi to men's diet for two consecutive days causes their blood phosphate levels to increase and their magnesium excretion to decrease (Weiss et al., 1992).In the 1990's, German pharmacist Hertha Hafer discovered that excess dietary phosphate triggered her son's ADHD symptoms. In her book, The Hidden Drug, Dietary Phosphate: Cause of Behavior Problems, Learning Difficulties and Juvenile Delinquency, she presents a low phosphate diet as a treatment for ADHD. A low phosphate diet led to dramatic improvements in her son's behavior, well-being, and school performance, rendering medication unnecessary. Her family's ADHD problem was resolved and her son had no further problems as long as he avoided high phosphate foods. Hafer finds that children with mild ADHD can improve simply by removing processed meats and phosphate-containing beverages like soda and sports drinks from their diets (Waterhouse, 2008).Everyday plastic products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, that can migrate into our body and affect the brain and nervous system. These environmental toxins bind to zinc and deplete zinc levels in the body. Phthalates are synthetic chemicals used to make plastics soft and flexible. Phthalates are used in hundreds of consumer products and humans are exposed to them daily through air, water, and food. Multiple studies have linked phthalates with ADHD. Researchers assessed the urine phthalate concentrations and ADHD symptoms ADHD symptoms (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity), rated by the children's teachers, were significantly associated with phthalate metabolites (breakdown products) (Kim et al., 2009).Prenatal phthalate exposure is associated with problems in childhood behavior and executive functioning. Third-trimester urines from 188 pregnant women were collected and analyzed for phthalate metabolites. Their children were assessed for cognitive and behavioral development between the ages of 4 and 9. Phthalate metabolites were associated with worse aggression, conduct problems, attention problems, depression, externalizing problems, and emotional control (Engel et al., 2010).In addition to heavy metals and plasticizers, pesticides can cause ADHD symptoms. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes, “Children encounter pesticides daily in air, food, dust, and soil. For many children, diet may be the most influential source. Studies link early-life exposure to organophosphate insecticides with reductions in IQ and abnormal behaviors associated with ADHD and autism” (Roberts & Karr, 2012).Among pesticides, insecticides may be the most harmful to humans. Insecticides were first developed during World War II as nerve gases. They work by targeting and destroying, an enzyme that controls the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which plays a role in attention, learning, and short-term memory. Even organophosphate exposure at low levels common among US children may contribute to ADHD prevalence. Researchers at Harvard University studied more than 1,000 children aged 8-15 from the general population and found that those with detectable urinary levels of an OP metabolite were nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD (Bouchard et al., 2010).Source: JAMES GREENBLATT, MD REFERENCES:Braun et al (2006). Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your child was the abuser and not the victim? Dawn Long, an advocate for parents of children who have suffered sexual abuse shares her story on this episode. She talks about her own history of childhood sexual abuse and how her son also went through similar experiences as a small boy when it was discovered he was being abused by a neighborhood child. Unfortunately, as an adult, he was arrested and imprisoned on child pornography charges. This episode discusses the cycle that can occur when one generation is victimized by another, and what changes need to be made in order to prevent this cycle from continuing.Resources: www.dawnlongcoach.comhttps://www.dawnlongcoach.com/service-page/finding-strength-free-4-week-coachingYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6AE_PfvuUcHThDseXIMJXASpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4mbHjqbPwHEYQrbbkDZNPCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourtransformationjourney/Website: https://www.dawnlongcoach.comLInkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/dawnlong

Britain in the 1960s was an exciting place, especially if you were a young person. From this explosion of culture, two distinct yet unique youth subcultures were born, the Mods and the Rockers. Expressing themselves in bold news ways, they were often in conflict with one another, the violence of which reached a crescendo in the spring of 1964. But were the scuffles between the two groups as bad as they were reported to be or was it a gross exaggeration by the media to incite a moral panic? A national non-profit released a report this month assessing how New Hampshire handles juvenile delinquency cases. The National Juvenile Defender Center says legal representation for juveniles in the state is "gravely undervalued," which leads to inadequate access to attorneys and unneccesary reates of probation and court involvement. The group focused much of its report on the role of the New Hampshire Public Defender, which contracts with the state to provide counsel to indigent clients, including juveniles. NHPR's Morning Edition Host Rick Ganley spoke with Randy Hawkes, the director for the New Hampshire Public Defender. Rick Ganley: You've said you agree with most of this report, except for one key finding that defenders are prevented from providing youth with the representation that the Constitution demands. But public defenders do face challenges in representing juvenile cases here in the state. Can you talk more about that? Randy Hawkes: Sure. But as a preliminary matter, let

Few hard rock bands lived the life portrayed in their songs as authentically as Guns N’ Roses. Singer, Axl Rose was driven by deep seeded demons that drove the creation of his band’s legendary debut album, Appetite For Destruction as well as his legendary bad behavior. His band was hardly any different. Nearly dysfunctional from drug use and excess, their record label feared they would all die before their first album was even released. Listen to part 1 of Guns N’ Roses saga in Disgraceland complete with highly entertaining cameos by David Bowie, Joe Perry, Mick Jagger and others. For parents with teens, tweens or kids that will be at some point, this episode is a great one to listen to. Ameé speaks with a favorite repeat guest, Jax Anderson - a Wisconsin-based family therapist that specializes in teenagers. Together, they have a frank (meaning adult words) and super helpful conversation about how to parent teenagers when they are acting their worst. As Ameé mentions in the episode, it's always really easy to parent when things are good and pat yourself on the back for your awesome skills but messy feelings are a part of life and our kids have more of them than our co-workers or friends do (and if that's not a true statement - rethink your job and your friends! Seriously.)So, showing up and parenting when our kids' act, quite frankly, like a-holes is super tough - especially if you have wounds yourself and the confrontations trigger you. Jax provides some real tips and insights on how to do this. AND, guess what? If you actually practice and use them, I bet that the incidences of difficult, disrespectful behavior, will actually decrease.ResourcesJax Anderson - The Psyko Therapist on FacebookThe Psyko Therapist Website

Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) get to the meat and cheese of their five-part look at the Comics Code Authority: 1954's Senate Hearings on Juvenile Delinquency, starring Senator Estes Kefauver! They look at increasing anti-comics public sentiment and the exact comic book that served as the tipping point and legitimized federal investigation. Then, they take you through all three days of the hearings, talking about each witness and their testimonies, while interjecting the usual silly commentary. http://www.thecomicbooks.com/1954senatetranscripts.html Full Transcript of the Senate Subcommittee's Hearings on Juvenile Delinquency https://youtu.be/jXKKTX1ke90 Senator Estes Kefauver on What's My Line? Teaching Assistant (TA)California State University, Stanislaus, Turlock, CA 2011 2012 ___________________________________________________________________________ Personal Experience: My involvement with gangs spans 50 years, beginning with my initiation into a street gang at age 13. In 1973, at age 21, I became a member of the Nuestra Familia prison gang while serving time at Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI). I left the NF once I was released from prison in 1976. After my defection from the gang, I maintained a high degree of respect from my street gang homeboys simply because I never testified against any of my former Homeboys. In the course of my criminal career and going in and out of prison for twenty-eight years, I witnessed the proliferation of gangs. Mostly, I observed all the superficial, and few substantial changes between old and modern gangs. In 1996, I was released from prison for the last time and have turned my life completely around. However, as a result of my multiple gang involvement (street and prison), and my many years in different jails and prisons throughout the state of California, Texas and Washington, I have developed a unique and thorough insight into the gang phenomena that neither law enforcement nor academics can ever achieve because they have never been on the inside of a gang or served time in jail or prison. ______________________________________________________________________________ Academic & Professional Experience: Since leaving prison for the last time on April 2, 1996, I have earned three University degrees and each of my degrees has been primarily the study and research of gangs. It is due to these distinct achievements, coupled with my personal experience, that I have been qualified on many occasions to testify as an expert witness. In my very first case as a gang expert, I testified in Siskiyou County on a Death Penalty case involving an alleged White Supremacy gang. The gang allegations were dismissed after my testimony at preliminary hearing. In October, 2013, I testified in Stanislaus County on an alleged Norteño gang murder case involving one adult and two juveniles who were prosecuted as adults. All three defendants in that case were found not guilty of gang enhancements. My client was found innocent of all charges as a direct result of my testimony. I again testified in Stanislaus County in November, 2014 where a defendant had been charged with being a gang member under a gang injunction. The defendant was found not guilty as a direct result of my testimony. In December, 2014, I testified on a homicide case in Stanislaus County where gang allegations were filed. The jury was unable to reach a verdict due to my testimony. The case is currently set for trial later this year (2016). Recently, (January, 2015) I submitted a report on a robbery case in Marin County where the defendants had been charged with 186.22 and the gang allegation was dismissed as a result of my report. I also testified in Tulare County on December 2014 on an Asian Blood gang case. All three defendants were found guilty of the gang allegation filed against them. I have testified in: Los Angeles County (2) Contra Costa County (1) Santa Barbara County (1) Santa Clara County (4) San Joaquin County (1) San Mateo County (1) Sacramento County (1) Siskiyou County (1) Stanislaus County (4) Placer County (1) Tulare County (2) Hillsborough, Oregon (1) Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1) I have also participated in aiding lawyers in preparation of testimony and given opinions on approximately 95 gang cases. Currently, I am working one death penalty case in Tulare County and a post conviction death case with the Habeas Corpus Resource Center in San Francisco CA. I have also worked with the Federal Public Defenders Office on a case out of Sacramento, CA on a post conviction case and two other post conviction cases in Oregon. I am also currently working on four R.I.C.O. cases and expected to testify late October or early November on one R.I.C.O. case in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Consultant & Mentor for Fathers & Families of San Joaquin: I currently work with and mentor gang members who are interested in leaving their gang. I provide the gang member guidance and resource information that will facilitate their transition from the gang lifestyle into mainstream society. On-Going Founder of Criminals & Gang members Anonymous: A 12-Step program for gang members and criminals alike that addresses problems pertaining to gang & criminal involvement. Group membership is constantly evolving. As a result, new members bring with them a wealth of current information, which keeps me abreast of gang trends, both locally and on a state level. 1998-On-Going Founder Of Jonah Foundation: A sober living facility that provided counseling and sustenance for ex-offenders. It was through the group counseling and rap sessions that I developed meaningful contacts with the participants, all who had just been released from prison or jail. These men were attempting to disassociate themselves from the gang/criminal lifestyle. To date, many of them continue to share with me valuable gang and other crimino-genic trends. 2006-2008 Program Director of a Day Reporting Center: In 2008, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation awarded BI, Inc. a contract to operate a facility targeting high-risk offenders. The intent of this program was to alter the behavior of the offender by using evidence-based practices. I was the day-to-day operations manager in charge of insuring that the safety and security of my employees, and the clients, was assured. In the process of my daily interactions with clients who were just recently released from California State Prison and out of state prisons as well, I was fortunate to gather intelligence concerning not only state gang trends, but national gang trends too. 2008-2010 __________________________________________________________________________ Publications:Detoured: My Journey from Darkness to Light. "The Challenge of Representing Juvenile Delinquency Cases and Special Education Rights in Today's Courts System" Show Guest: Shep Zibberman According to Shep Zebberman, the biggest challenge in today's juvenile court system is trying to balance the numerous competing interests at play while obtaining the best possible outcome for youth. A delinquency case is essentially a criminal case where the accused was under the age of 18 at the time an offense was alleged to have been committed. Unlike Adult courts, the Juvenile system has rehabilitation as its primary goal. So when Zebberman represents a minor who is accused of committing a crime, he or she may be 13 or 14 years old and may want something completely different then what the parents want because he or she is looking at the situation through the eyes of a 13 or 14 year old. In the context of a youth seeking educational rights, he or she may be refusing all kinds of benefits offered by the school district for a variety of reasons such as not wanting to change class schedules or not wanting to appear socially different. Join us as Zebberman gives our audience a startling view into the decisions and pressures children at young ages are up against that at one time did not exist at this level, such as peer pressure to do drugs; pressure not to trust the "system" whether be the educational or judicial; and most alarming of all, pressure "not to succeed".

Starship Troopers is a military science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, first published (in abridged form) as a serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (October, November 1959, as "Starship Soldier") and published hardcover in December 1959.The first-person narrative is about a young soldier from the Philippines named Juan "Johnnie" Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military service branch equipped with powered armor. Rico's military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnoid species known as "the Bugs." Rico and the other characters discuss moral and philosophical aspects of suffrage, civic virtue, juvenile delinquency, capital punishment, and war.
