Hi friends! We are back. So sorry for the little pause to help me catch up after one of the worst sick seasons my house has seen.In this episode of Picking Daisies, Mary sits down with Kristin Revere — doula, podcast host, founder of Gold Coast Doulas, and author of Supported: Your Guide to Birth and Baby — to have a raw and powerful conversation about what it truly means to feel supported in motherhood. They unpack the critical role doulas play in the birthing and postpartum experience — not just as birth experts, but as compassionate advocates who help women feel seen, heard, and held in one of life's most transformational moments. From personal stories to generational perspectives, hypnobirthing to loss support, this conversation touches every corner of what support really looks like when you're growing through what you go through. They also explore the cultural stigma around asking for help, how education can empower moms, and why support in motherhood should never be treated like a luxury.Whether you're preparing for birth, healing from it, or just wondering how to show up better for yourself or the people you love — this episode is packed with insight, validation, and a gentle reminder that you don't have to do it all alone.TAKEAWAYS:Doulas offer critical emotional, physical, and informational support throughout childbirth.Hypnobirthing empowers women through positive language and visualization techniques.Loss doulas provide vital care and comfort during some of the hardest moments of parenthood.Generational beliefs can shape the way we view support in birth and postpartum.Doulas help partners feel more prepared and involved in the birthing process.New moms often feel isolated — doulas can be a lifeline in those early days.Cultural norms often stigmatize asking for help, making support feel like a privilege instead of a right.Education about birth options leads to more confident, empowered parents.A birth preference sheet helps care teams support the birthing person more intentionally.Kristin's book Supported offers a judgment-free, inclusive approach to navigating pregnancy, birth, and early parenting.MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Kristin Revere's book: Supported: Your Guide to Birth and BabyGold Coast Doulas: goldcoastdoulas.comAsk the Doulas PodcastJoin Mary everyday for a real look into life with 3 crazy ass kids, surviving, thriving, and whatever the F else you might consider over at www.instagram.com/theverymarylife. Her subsequent path through midwifery education revealed the power of community-based care, particularly in group prenatal settings where women support each other through pregnancy and beyond. What truly stands out is Elise's ground breaking research at her MUM Lab (Mechanisms Underpinning Maternal Health). She's challenging conventional wisdom about maternal age, investigating biological aging markers that may better predict pregnancy outcomes than simply counting birthdays. Perhaps most exciting is her innovative work using smart rings to track body temperature patterns that could predict labour onset—potentially transforming how we approach inductions and birth timing. The conversation delves into the complex relationship between synthetic oxytocin (commonly used in labour) and postpartum outcomes. Through meticulous research, Elise explores how this medication might affect everything from postpartum haemorrhage risk to breastfeeding success by altering oxytocin receptor function. Her work exemplifies the vital connection between clinical observation and scientific inquiry.Looking forward, Elise envisions truly personalized maternal care that integrates biological markers, personal preferences, and social contexts—moving beyond one-size-fits-all approaches while maintaining safety standards. Her story reminds us how curiosity and compassion can drive scientific discovery that transforms lives.Want to learn more about the cutting-edge research happening in maternal health? Trish tackles birth fears head-on, helping mamas turn anxiety into confidence. With 80% of pregnant women feeling nervous and 20% facing tokophobia, birth fear is common—but you CAN overcome your birth fears and actually ENJOY your birth. Blame horror stories, dramatic movies, or a medical system that forgets birth is normal. Fear floods your body with cortisol, slowing labor and amping up pain, while oxytocin—the love hormone—takes a hit. Keywords: grief, Black maternal health, pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, stillbirth In this episode of the Resilient to Birth podcast, hosts Justine Leach and Sarah Adelmann welcome Helena Morais, who shares her profound journey of loss after the stillbirth of her daughter, Maila. The conversation explores the sacredness of relationships that transcend death, the challenges of navigating grief, and the importance of information and advocacy in maternal health, particularly for Black women. Helena emphasizes the need for awareness around pregnancy risks, particularly for marginalized communities, and the significance of honoring lost children. The episode concludes with reflections on the loneliness of grief and the importance of community support. Helena Morais a mother of two: one earth side and one ether side baby. Her firstborn baby girl Maila Angela Viana Morais was stillborn at 36 weeks and 5 days on the 29th December 2022. Giving birth and becoming a first time mum with no baby to bring home changes you in indescribable ways. The only way she has found to survive with this grief, pain, rage and longing has been to talk. She survives by unapologetically continuing to share her story and finding alternative ways of continuing to parent her child. She would have had to dedicate her life to caring for her daughter had she been born alive, to Helena this does not change just because she is gone. She will be dedicating the rest of her life to continuing her legacy. In turn she hopes to encourage and hold space with other mothers choosing to do the same. Takeaways The relationship with those who have passed remains sacred. Awareness of pregnancy risks is crucial for all parents. Advocating for oneself in healthcare is essential. Honoring lost children is a vital part of the healing process. The experience of loss can feel incredibly isolating. Information about maternal health should be accessible to all. Cultural disparities in maternal health must be addressed. Sound Bites "The relationship does not end." "Grief is an awful, painful thing." "I didn't want to be a statistic." "I'd rather be scared and safe than sorry." "You know your body better than anyone else." "Grief is a very lonely experience."
