Is it normal for my toddler to still wake? Surely they should be independent by now….. Even the most responsive parents can sometimes feel like toddler sleep should be easier than it is. In this last episode of my realistic expectations mini series I'm talking about 2 and 3 year old sleep. Older toddlers can still need your support at bedtime and in the night. They also do have a lot more capacity for independence and long sleep stretches than they did as a younger toddler or baby. Older toddlers need a lot of the same supports as babies and younger toddlers like good sleep hygiene and connection, and they also need support strategies that can draw on more general parenting tools like empathetic limits and playful transitions.Resources related to this episodeAge by age realistic sleep expectations:https://intuitiveparentingdc.com/blog/2018/7/6/developmentally-appropriate-sleep-expectations-birth-to-age-5Toddler waking norms: https://intuitiveparentingdc.com/blog/2021/1/27/is-it-normal-for-my-toddler-to-still-wake-at-nightConnect with KimInstagram: instagram.com/intuitive_parenting_dcFacebook:  facebook.com/intuitiveparentingdcLearn more about working with Kim: https://intuitiveparentingdc.com/

In this episode of Brand New Little People, Dr Fallon & Dr Laura (PhDs, Sleep Practitioners) discuss how you can help your toddler adjust to big life changes, with a specific focus on protecting their sleep. Do toddlers who sleep through the night have interrupted sleep after a new baby arrives? What about moving house with a toddler – how do I avoid hiccups with their sleep during such a big change? My toddler has never fallen asleep without me there to settle them and now they're starting childcare – how can I prepare them for this? These are just some of the topics we've been asked to address on the podcast. And they all speak to a common theme – toddlers. We LOVE toddlers – they're curious little scientists, trying to work out how the world works and when their world suddenly shifts, they can find it really tough. ☕️ Love our work? Dr. Diamond bridges the worlds of being a pediatrician with being a parent. She adds a lot of great parental insight into many aspects of parenting from the rigid research to the wild west of the internet.  Here's what we talk about with Dr. Diamond: Why the toddler phase is so challenging for so many parents on a daily basis in relation to the advice being given.Parenting advice can be helpful but you can take the pieces that feel good for your own parenting and leave the rest. Parental efficacy, or parental confidence, will directly translate to positive parenting for your child. Different parenting styles and how parents can create their own parenting philosophy to tune into what you and your child need. The reasons why toddlers have tantrums and how to navigate these emotional episodes using different strategies.Setting realistic and developmentally appropriate boundaries and consequences for toddlers. Balancing rewards and external motivators to help toddlers learn about life skills. The importance of a consistent bedtime routine with toddlers and how to implement it in your home.Viewing parenting issues from the stance from whether or not there is an actual problem and determining if you need to take action. Why separation anxiety is developmentally normal in kids and how parents can work through their emotions related to it. Resources:You can find Dr. Diamond on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/parentlikeapediatrician/?hl=enParent Like a Pediatrician: https://www.amazon.com/Parent-Like-Pediatrician-Facts-None/dp/0806541636Eat, Sleep, Tantrum, Repeat: https://www.amazon.com/Parent-Like-Pediatrician-Facts-None/dp/0806541636Dr. Shefali podcast episode: https://theparentingreframe.com/podcast-episodes/episode-54-conscious-parenting-with-dr-shefali/ For more insight into parenting in today's world, be sure to subscribe to my Substack: https://www.albiona.substack.comAnd be sure to follow me on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentingreframe and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theparentingreframe for more parenting tips and advice.

On this week's episode of the Balancing Chaos Podcast, Kelley sits down with the sleep coach she has used with both of her own kids, who has truly changed her life for the better, Chrissy Lawler. Chrissy is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, lover of sleep, and baby sleep consultant. Like Kelley, she lives in Las Vegas with her husband and four daughters, who are, thanks to her, amazing sleepers. She will tell you they weren't born that way but with what Chrissy teaches, your babies can be amazing sleepers, too!Chrissy founded The Peaceful Sleeper for two main reasons: she recognized how critically important sleep is in all aspects of life (mentally, physically and emotionally), and she believes that many parents are under-informed or feel unnecessary guilt when it comes to sleep learning and sleep coaching their babies. Chrissy has been practicing therapy for 13 years now, and she slowly started to realize that sleep issues were a common thread among all of her clients. So she got some additional training in advanced sleep medicine  and learned that many of the mental health challenges we (and our children) face today stem from inadequate sleep.Together, Kelley and Chrissy discuss sleep patterns for adults and children, emphasizing the importance of age-appropriate sleep durations for optimal health physically and mentally. Throughout the episode Chrissy shares valuable insights on myths about sleep learning, how to initiate an independent sleep process with your child no matter what their age, how to address sleep regressions, what to do about adult insomnia and how to truly disconnect from our screens for better quality sleep. So listen in and learn about how to get yourself and your kids to bed and why its so important for all of us! To connect with Kelley click HERETo book a lab review click HERETo connect with Chrissy click HERE

"She woke up for 15 minutes during her nap...WHY? How can I make her sleep?" "He played for 20 minutes with his trucks after bedtime, how can I make him sleep instead?" These are total normal questions I get from clients, and here is what I tell them, and I want you to know: You can't. You cannot control your child's eyelids closing and falling asleep. Moreso, I don't want you to, and I don't care at all if either of the above scenarios occur. These are totally normal things! In today's episode, I want to help you release the urge to try and make your baby or toddler the perfect sleeper. No one is. Instead? My goal through the process for any client (and anyone listening to this!) is that your child is given the gift of knowing how to put themselves to sleep (and back to sleep when they wake!) and you, as the parent, have the gift of being able to release. Release the urge to feel that you should or even can control their exact sleep stats (leave me alone, Nanit!) and instead have the confidence that you A) are offering your child sleep at times that are appropriate B) trusting your child has the skills and will do with that time what they want and C) you have the tools to know when to make a change or seek help if something changes that is really abnormal. There is so much information out there about holistic approaches to baby sleep - but what about toddlers? I am so thrilled to have Sarah Patel, a certified baby and toddler sleep consultant, on the podcast this week to answer the following questions:1. How do I know when to drop the final toddler nap?2. My toddler fights going to bed, how can I stop this?3. My kid says they are scared when I put them to bed. How can I create a welcoming environment for them to want to sleep in their room?4. What can I do about my toddler getting into my bed at night?5. How do we practice not trying to sneak out of our kids' room after laying with them in order to get them to fall asleep? How can we encourage them to fall asleep on their own? Sarah Patel is a mum of two little ones 18 months apart,  a Certified Baby and Toddler Sleep consultant and the founder of Teach To Sleep. She has over 15 years' experience teaching as a primary school teacher and a senior lecturer in education. Sarah classes herself as a gentle holistic sleep consultant, rather than a sleep trainer which means she offers personalised support using responsive strategies, so she does not use any form of crying it out or controlled crying methods.Sarah has lots of free resources on her instagram page as well as sleep guides, online sleep courses and a variety of one to one packages which can be found on her website www.teachtosleep.co.uk. ______________________________Did you love this episode?
