On September 3, 1994, Rhoda Nathan was murdered in Room 237 of the Embassy Suites Hotel in Blue Ash, OH. Police focused on hotel employee Elwood Jones as a suspect after they saw an infected cut on his hand. There were no eyewitnesses nor was there DNA evidence linking Elwood to the crime, so the case against him relied heavily on hypothetical claims. The prosecution also failed to provide the defense with exculpatory evidence that would have affirmed Elwood's innocence. Elwood was ultimately convicted of the murder and sentenced to death. Jason speaks to Elwood Jones and David Hine and Jay Clark, Elwood's attorneys. (From 10.08.22, Segment 2) Outdoor Guys Bill & Wes recently went 'Over The Edge' at the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Charlotte, as they rappelled down the side of the building, raising money alongside the NASCAR Hall Of Fame Foundation to help benefit local STEM educational programs. The Jesse Brown's Outdoors Team also demonstrated casting techniques and the art of fly-fishing (while on the ground!) on the NASCAR Plaza to students, some of whom, undoubtedly, had never fished before and must have had a little fear or trepidation. Thus begs the question, "Is having some fear a requirement in order to be able to adventure?" A little fear IS healthy and completely normal, and overcoming fear to enjoy being outdoors and adventuring is a challenge worth undertaking! Continue to listen in after this discussion to hear Jesse Brown's Outdoors' Lead Fishing Guide Dave Bergman further break down the "Cheating At The (Fishing) Scales!" news out of Cleveland, Ohio! This conversation is a continuation from Segment 1.

Architect Victor Sidy was Dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin with campuses in Scottsdale, Arizona and Spring Green, Wisconsin. He was a vocal advocate for saving Frank Lloyd Wright houses and buildings and for walkable community development.  In 2015 he returned to private practice but is still involved with one special Frank Lloyd Wright house in Phoenix, the David and Gladys Wright House, which father Frank designed for his son. The house has been on a rollercoaster in recent years, doomed one moment, saved the next, in limbo the next. Historian Alison King is founder of Modern Phoenix and is Associate Professor of Design at The Art Institute of Phoenix.  Since 2003 she has published Arizona's largest website for  midcentury architecture, ModernPhoenix.net, and she hosts an annual home tour and the always interesting Modern Phoenix Week. Alison gave USModernist a wonderful tour last November of both residential and commercial modernist buildings, culminating in a trip to the David and Gladys Wright House.  Host George Smart interviewed Victor and Alison in the lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel right off Central Avenue, just a few blocks up from Will Bruder’s Burton Barr Phoenix Central Library. By then it was happy hour, and of course we didn’t want to break protocol, so when in Phoenix, do as the Phoenicians do.  Cheers!

Today Leah Hinds welcomes Ashley Krenelka Chase, Lindsay Cronk, and Rachel Fleming to the show to talk about their upcoming Charleston Conference presentation titled, “When Change is a “New” Concept: Using Your Library’s Past to Manage its Future.” Ashley Krenelka Chase is the Associate Director at the Dolly & Homer Hand Law Library at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. Ashley's scholarly interests include leadership and the impact of millennials on libraries and legal academia.  Lindsay Cronk is Head of Collection Strategies at the University of Rochester. Lindsay has spent more than six years in librarianship, first in consortia and now in academia, honing an approach to collection development and strategy that is dynamic, data-driven, inclusive, and user-focused. Lindsay is covered in tattoos and full of strong opinions.  Rachel Fleming is Collections Initiatives Librarian at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Fleming has library experience in collection development, collection assessment, acquisitions, and serials management. As Collections Initiatives Librarian, Rachel manages an Affordable Course Materials Initiatives program, collections analysis, and scholarly communications programs. Ashley, Lindsay, and Rachel will be presenting at the Charleston Library Conference on Wednesday, November 8, at 2:30 pm in the Colonial Ballroom of the Embassy Suites Hotel. Hope to see you there! More about the presenters: Ashley Krenelka Chase Lindsay Cronk Rachel Fleming There seem to be three types of people in libraries: people who thrive on change, people who are change-averse, and people who support the idea of change but are resistant to its implementation. But the facts are these: we have to change. Library culture *should* be changing as rapidly as our collections, but organizational culture can often lag behind and library leaders need to be able to manage all of these types of changes - both actual and needed - simultaneously. Change in libraries can emerge from on the ground knowledge, out of strategic planning, or be imposed from outside the library. How do we manage expectations of myriad stakeholders, existing services, and various change projects? How can librarians at all levels be leaders in their organizations through both simple and complicated times of change? Offering a set of approaches and tools for addressing change in the library and cultivating buy-in, this session will present three different perspectives on change management from leaders in three different libraries. Attendees will understand what change management means from the perspective of three different librarians, and how library challenges are tackled (keeping in mind culture, collections, and colleagues). Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to approach change in their libraries; how to communicate with their colleagues about change; and how to maintain a positive attitude in the face of varying degrees of conflict within their libraries or institutions; and lead their colleagues through necessary changes to lead the library to a successful future.
