The planet's not dying. Our place and our version of it may be dying. So how do we deal with that? How do we accept and live with the knowledge that our version of it is dying. It's not something to panic about in the sense that the whole thing's going away, hopefully. We don't know, but I think that notion of living with grace, living without fear, trying to live without anxiety, because those are just places where we flounder, shut off and develop toxic escapes.(photo of Kenneth Newby by Linda Ofshe)I first met Kenneth Newby in 2023 at the infamous Lunch Lady Vietnamese street food restaurant on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. We mostly talked about a book he recommended to me, Learning to Die : Wisdom in the Age of Climate Crisis by Robert Bringhurst & Jan Zwicky, which was transformative for me.Kenneth is a fellow new music composer and sound artist with whom I shared many ecological concerns including aspirations for the role of art in this era of environmental decline.So, I invited him to have a conversation, my second last of this 5th season, where we have been exploring how to  'prepare for the end of the world as we know it and creating the conditions for other possible worlds to emerge'.Kenneth now lives in Victoria. We recorded our conversation in his backyard on September 23rd, 2024. We talked about his journey as a composer and musician, from childhood lessons, experiences in blues bands through to interactive music systems, Indonesian gamelan music and psychedelic experiences, among others.During our exchange, I was thankful that he shared examples of some of his creative projects that integrate storytelling, ecological awareness, and collaborative solutions about societal and environmental issues. Transport planner and transport economist Anton Siy develops solutions and strategies for public and private authorities looking for ways out of traffic congestion, educating us all on how to "move people, not cars" and the dangers of "induced demand" (or why just adding more roads makes things worse). As Head of Pasig Transport, Anton handles local transport planning & policy, road safety, and e-mobility for Pasig, a city in Metro Manila with nearly a million residents. On a national level, he previously worked with the Philippines' Department of Finance from 2013 to 2015, where he was part of the multi-agency team that helped launch various Public-Private Partnership Projects for transport infrastructure. From 2015 to 2016, Anton studied at the University of Leeds' Institute for Transport Studies through a Chevening Scholarship, where he earned an M.A. in Transport Economics with Distinction. He also holds an M.S. in Finance from Boston College and a B.A. in International Relations from Tufts University. On this episode, we discuss what Manila can learn from other global cities, how his office managed the lockdowns of 2020, and building consensus despite opposition from some stakeholders (like his work establishing dedicated bike lanes along car-filled streets – the data doesn't lie!). For the month of December, we will spend every Monday morning in a series called “Praise, Process & Pray through 2021”. Last week, we processed the topic of change, closed doors/redirection, or loss. Thank God for what he did in relationships. This year, I grew closer to my oldest daughter and my husband. Process: Broken relationships have the potential to hold great power over us. Dr. Robert Anthony says, “When you blame others, you give up your power to change”. I lost a friendship this year and it left me feeling confused, betrayed, and lonely. Every time that friend comes to mind, I choose to release and bless her. Let's do that now in our prayer time. Pray: Pray over broken relationships. Stonington schools staff and the FBI are working together to determine the scope of access and how it was granted after the district was targeted as part of a ransomware attack discovered last week. The district first found evidence of the ransomware around 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Assessment Mary Anne Butler, and staff led by Director of Technology Christopher Williston took immediate action to secure the district's systems including taking the entire district offline. The nature and origin of the attack and whether information was compromised both remain the subjects of an ongoing investigation, officials said. “We don't have a lot of information at this point and we will continue to work with a cybersecurity team to determine the scope. We have taken precautions to make sure everything remains protected. Our top priority is the safety of the children.” The district first notified parents on Monday afternoon through an email sent to all families. The message, which was shared around 5 p.m., indicated to families that the district had already begun taking steps to remediate the issue including isolating the district from the internet. Ransomware is a malicious computer software that threatens to publish or block access to data, usually by encrypting it, until the victim pays a ransom fee. It was unclear whether any information was obtained, but officials indicated that the system was removed from the internet before much of the information had been encrypted. Bob was born in Goshen, Indiana and continued to return there to see family and revisit special places from his childhood. Last year he was honored and celebrated by the city on his final visit. Bob was a proud WWII veteran and served on 3 aircraft carriers as an Aviation Mechanic and maintained and operated the gun turret on TBM Avenger aircraft. He often said his Navy days were the best days of his early, adult life. After leaving the Navy and having a variety of jobs, he spent over 50 years in Real Estate; a career he loved and in which he received numerous awards and accolades. He opened RT Blough Real Estate Brokerage in West Hartford and was also appointed chairman of the Connecticut Real Estate Commission. He was most proud of his family, and loved being a father to his five children, as well as a grandfather and a great grandfather. He lived a joy-filled life to the fullest! He looked at every experience as a grand adventure and with his ever present, radiant smile. He leaves behind two daughters, a son, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many extended family members. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Bob's life.
