    Stalemate at the Ohio Statehouse.

Stalemate at the Ohio Statehouse. There continues to be a stalemate at the Ohio Statehouse. Legislation is bottled up in committee and not coming to the floor for a vote. Ohioans voted for a majority of Republicans In both the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate. Ohio is a conservative state, and people are frustrated as to why we do not see the same type of conservative legislation passing in Ohio that is passing in other conservative states. The problem continues to be Speaker Stephens, who was elected Speaker with a majority of Democrats, not Republicans.  This continues to be a point of frustration for conservatives in both the House and Senate. This stalemate is now at historic levels, as this General Assembly has passed less legislation than any other Oho legislature going back 70 years. Frustrated by the standoff, Governor DeWine himself called for a special session. The last time a Governor had to call for a special session was in 2004. The Ohio House and the Ohio Senate did come together this week to pass a bill that would ban foreign money from interfering in Ohio's elections. They also voted to put Joe Biden on the Ohio ballot. The question remains, will the Ohio House and Senate come together to pass meaningful conservative legislation, or will the stalemate continue the rest of this session? Listen to this week's News in Focus program to learn more.

STOP Illegal Immigration in Ohio- Legislation has been introduced to address the problem. State Rep. Scott Wiggam of the 77th Ohio House District in Wayne County discusses legislation that he has introduced to address the illegal immigration problem in Ohio.  H.B. 327, E-Verify, will penalize employers who hire illegal immigrants. H.B. 451, The Wire Act, will track American funds being wired out of the State of Ohio. Drug cartels and human traffickers are wiring money out of the state that they acquire by selling drugs and sex trafficking in the state. Rep. Wiggam's bill will finally track this money.  The third piece of legislation is a Texas-style illegal immigration law. Illegal immigration is illegal, in Ohio and we should treat it as such. Ohio as a border state should have the  authority for its law enforcement to arrest and deport illegals from the State of Ohio. Tune in and tell a friend.

Greg Lawson discusses Ohio's housing crisis and what policy makers are doing about it Greg Lawson, Research Fellow at the Buckeye Institute, Ohio's conservative think tank, joins News in Focus to discuss with Chris Long Ohio's housing crisis and what legislators are doing about it. Rising costs due to inflation, high interest rates, and the lack of available single family homes, as well as rising rents, are driving the crisis. Ohio can't build for the future if it can't house the new workers coming in for the Intel project in central Ohio. Costs are high, builders aren't building, banks aren't lending, and younger adults are losing hope of ever realizing the American dream of owning their own home. The Ohio Senate convened a select committee on housing earlier this year. They heard from mortgage lenders,  home builders, and other interested parties. They have taken those findings from the committee hearings and have drafted  legislation to address the problem. Senate President Matt Huffman stated in a press conference last week that there was not enough time this year to have a comprehensive plan in place, but that this will be a priority of the legislature and that it will take multiple years to turn the situation around in Ohio to address Ohio's housing crisis.

In recent years, Ohio, along with other states who have a death penalty for certain capital crime, i.e. murder, has been stymied by the drug industry that will not provide the state with the drugs to be used in lethal injection. The Attorney General of Alabama declared it a success and stated that he would be available for other states' attorneys to contact his office for details. The following are statements from AG Yost and State Rep. Phil Plummer. “There must be accountability for offenders convicted of the most heinous crimes and prisoners who continue to flout the law behind bars,” Yost said. “The pursuit of justice is a journey, and closure remains elusive for victims' families until a sentence is fully executed. Ensuring that the consequences align with the severity of an offense is essential to providing solace to grieving relatives.” “Capital punishment has been recognized by the state of Ohio since 1803. It is now time for the authorization of other methods for carrying out capital punishment in addition to lethal injections,” Plummer stated. “By using nitrogen hypoxia, we are giving the system an additional resource for holding accountable those who have committed heinous crimes. Claims of a lack of access to lethal injections by Ohio's executive branch will no longer be the case. It is time that we stop postponing executions and give the families of victims the closure that they deserve.”

No wonder he gets loudly booed in Ohio every time I introduce him at Rallies, but I won't be introducing him any more, I'm finished with this "stiff." What was he thinking. AG Yost has written a detailed analysis of what Issue 1 will do if  passed by the Ohio voters on the November 7th Election. He enumerates the areas in existing state law that would be affected by this proposed amendment. From AG Yost's analysis: The summary discusses the Amendment's legal standards and how they compare to the different standards under Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and concludes with a list of several laws that could be affected by this Amendment if it is enacted. Because the Amendment talks more broadly of reproductive health care,” including contraception, and other items 'including but not limited to' abortion, this list makes mention of specific laws that, based on past experience, I expect will most certainly be challenged at some point. It is not, however, an exhaustive list of all statutes that might possibly be affected by the proposed Amendment. Assembling such a list would require a greater degree of conjecture and speculation than is proper here." issue-1-analysis-ohio-ag-aspx.pdf (ohioca.org)

Major Ohio media has not covered the story. But the attacks have happened in multiple counties: Lake County (Willoughby), Cuyahoga (Parma), Richland (Shelby), and Washington (Churchtown). In this interview with Attorney General Dave Yost, we include news coverage from Channel 19 Cleveland and WTAP Parkersburg which covers southeast Ohio news.  AG Yost weighs in and shares his frustration with Merrick Garland's Justice Department, and encourages clergy to contact local law enforcement for aid and assistance.    Part 2 - Ohio churches attacked by vandals- The increase in vandalism is concerning public officials Church vandalism attacks again are on the increase here in the State of Ohio. As one analyst said in a recent report, these numbers do not portend a guarantee for the abortion ballot measure. Some Ohioans who voted no in August will also vote no in November. But, because Issue 1 failed, it will be a simple majority vote of 51% for passage. The Ballot Board meets this week and will assign issue numbers to both the abortion ballot issue and to the marijuana legalization issue. The radical abortion ballot issue backed by Planned Parenthood and the ACLU has just been challenged in the Ohio Supreme Court.  The Court has granted an expedited hearing on the case. Cincinnati Constitutional Attorney Curt Hartman argues that the abortion ballot amendment proposal is unconstitutional, as it does not state the laws that it would replace if adopted. Legal analysts watching this case say that this is the one to watch. The case has great merit and is stating the facts that are in Ohio law.  Quoting the brief filed by Attorney Hartman: "The law this Court is now called upon to apply is clear and unequivocal: any statewide initiative petition proposing a constitutional amendment must include “the text of any existing statute…that would be amended or repealed if the proposed…constitutional amendment is adopted.”  R.C. 3519.01(A).  Equally clear and undisputed is the fact that the statewide initiative petition at issue herein did not identify or include the text of any existing statute whatsoever.  Yet, the proposed constitutional amendment seeks to radically and fundamentally alter the whole subject-matter relating to reproductive rights (and abortion, in particular), including establishing a new and expansive definition on fetal viability, as well as establishing more liberal standards on abortion.  In so doing, the proposed constitutional amendment will create irreconcilable conflicts or repugnancies with innumerable provisions of existing statute, resulting in such statutes being amended or repealed.  Because the statewide initiative petition at issue herein failed to comply with the law, i.e., R.C. 3519.01(A), by including the text of any existing statute that would be amended or repealed if the proposed constitutional amendment is adopted, the petition failed to comply with all requirements of law and, accordingly, the petition must be declared to be invalid and the proposed constitutional amendment not placed on the ballot at the forthcoming general election."  Click here to read the entire brief

On This Independence Day, We Celebrate the Court Decision on Religious Liberty Constitutional attorney and former Ohio Senate President Larry Obhoff breaks down the recent SCOTUS decisions on religious liberty.  Carson v. Makin (2022) - Maine case involving school vouchers. Maine had a broad-based voucher program, in part because Maine has big rural areas where they literally don't have public schools. The state forbids vouchers from being used at religious schools. The Supreme Court struck down this policy. (I worked on this case for Buckeye Institute.) Kennedy v Bremerton (2022) - A football coach was fired for saying a silent prayer after games at the 50-yard line. Supreme Court held it violated the Free Exercise Clause. Shurtleff v Boston (2022) - The city of Boston allowed hundreds of organizations to use the city flagpole to fly their own flags, 284 flags without ever rejecting one. Told a Christian group they could not use the flagpole. Supreme Court said (unanimously) that this violated the Free Speech Clause. Geoff v DeJoy (2023) - decided last week. The Postal Service repeatedly punished an employee for not working on the Sabbath.  Supreme Court unanimously held that he was protected by federal civil rights laws. 303 Creative v Elenis (2023) decided last week. In a 6-3 opinion, the Court held that the First Amendment prohibits the state of Colorado from forcing a website designer to create expressive designs speaking messages with which she disagrees. On one hand, these victories suggest a bunch of wins for religious liberty. On the other hand, the fact that five cases like this ended up in front of the court in an 18-month window suggests that government intrusion on religious liberty is widespread. The Founding Fathers understood the importance of the U.S. Constitution. It takes two-thirds of both chambers of the U.S. Congress and three-fourths of the states to amend the U.S. Constitution. Ohio is one of only eight states that requires a simple majority to amend their constitution. Forty-two other states have higher standards for amending their constitutions than Ohio has. The Ohio Constitution has been amended 172 times, while the U.S. Constitution has only been amended 27 times. Radical abortion interests are seeking to place on the November ballot in Ohio an amendment that would legalize abortion to the ninth month of pregnancy, taking Ohio back to the dark days of Roe v. Wade. If the November ballot measure is passed, it will wipe out all of Ohio's pro-life laws that we have fought for over the past thirty years, including Ohio's ban on partial-birth abortion, Ohio's 20-week abortion ban, Ohio's Heartbeat Law, and the parental notification law.
