When Eoghan Murphy became minister for housing, he wanted to change everything. He wanted to declare housing an emergency. He wanted a constitutional right to housing. He got neither as the conservative elements won out. Instead he became the face of the housing crisis, the minister for homelessness. On a Free State Weekend Special, Eoghan Murphy talks to Dion about failure and dealing with pressure. He breaks down as he remembers the darkest moment when politics turned him into someone he didn't want to be. Dion asks him about his recent book event at the Irish embassy in London with Ryan Tubridy. Eoghan Murphy was Ireland's housing minister between 2017 and 2020. He faced the most difficult challenge in government at the time, the challenge of rapidly growing homeless numbers, a dormant construction industry, and rising rents. His departure from cabinet was soon followed by his full exit from politics in 2021. He has spent the time since writing his memoirs. Running From Office: Confessions of Ambition and Failure in Politics is his account of that time, and the period after his entry to politics at the 2009 local elections. In this episode, we get to know the real “Murph” (the nickname bestowed on him on Callan's Kicks, the RTÉ satirical radio show). His time in politics was woven among many personal challenges, including his relationships with others and his mental health. We thought about doing a podcast with all of the candidates seeking to replace Eoghan Murphy from Fine Gael as a TD for Dublin Bay South, but then we decided that there wasn't much point as it's a mix of establishment goons, establishment wannabes and some bizarre individuals who don't understand reality. One candidate stood out and is standing for all of the correct reasons. She is a worker, a renter and a young woman. Her name is Brigid Purcell and she's a campaigner, a Socialist, a fighter and a true representative of the forgotten generation that establishment Ireland has worked so hard to create. In this podcast, Brigid joins our host Barbara Smyth to outline her reasons for running, her experiences as a young woman in today's Ireland and what she offers to bring to Dáil Éireann if elected. As the only proper Socialist on the ballot paper, we at "Red Talks" are endorsing Brigid, who is the People Before Profit candidate. If you want to see Brigid join the other Socialist TD's in our Oireachtas, please give her your number ONE vote on 8th July. Brigid won't get transfers from the establishment parties, so if you think you'd like to see her represent you and you have a vote in the constituency, or if you know someone that does, please give her your No.1 PURCELL Brigid (Solidarity/PBP) is how she will appear on your ballot paper. Make you vote count - vote No.1 for the only Socialist seeking election in Dublin Bay South this Thursday! This is a "Red Talks" podcast series, produced by the Red Network which is an integral part of People Before Profit.

He knows at times he does not come across as overly compassionate when he's been asked about the impact of his Government's failings on the lives of people. Speaking on the Floating Voter podcast, Mr Varadkar said: “Sometimes, maybe I don't show that I care enough.” He says this is down to him being “blunt and straight talking” which can “come across as a bit insensitive sometimes”. “I understand that,” he added. However, he said his partner, Dr Matthew Barrett, believes the accusations that he lacks empathy are unfair. “I was actually talking to Matt, my partner, about that the other night and he said, ‘like that is so wrong and that's so unfair',” Mr Varadkar said. “Every evening when I'm home I'm talking about all the problems of the day and the struggles to get on top of those difficult issues like homelessness and overcrowding.” The Taoiseach said Mr Barrett also told him: “You really do care but you know it's the doctor in you. You want to get in there quickly and, you know, fix the problems, stem the blood.” He also accepts he does not take criticism very well and can be overly defensive when questioned about human tragedies. “I think anyone when they're being criticised or when they're being attacked they're going to be a little bit defensive sometimes so I think that's probably a fair criticism. “I hate to hear people dismiss facts and figures and statistics as if they don't matter. The core behind truth is facts and figures and statistics,” he added. He dismissed suggestions that he was seeking a presidential style General Election campaign which would focus on just him and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin. “I'm very happy to go toe-to-toe with Micheál Martin like I did last week and will again next week, but actually a lot of our campaign, a lot of our messages is that Fine Gael has as a team, really strong team,” he said. Since taking office he has learned you need a good team to “cover for you”. “I mean cover for you in a good way. Not cover up for you,” he added. “I have a similar view that we should keep the same Brexit team in place until we get the trade deal, which has to be done by the end of this year,” he said. He would not give any commitment on Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy and Health Minister Simon Harris who have both faced criticism for their handling of their department. However, he said: “Eoghan Murphy and Simon Harris are in good standing, and they've had really tough briefs. “What really disappoints me is the extent to which some people who don't have much solutions or new ideas when it comes to health and housing they try to cover that up by targeting those two guys personally. I think that's kind of nasty,” he added. He expanded on his offer to form a grand coalition between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil if no other government could be formed after the election while also claiming Mr Martin “didn't know basic facts about the Brexit withdrawal agreement”. “If we end up in a situation whereby Fine Gael can't do that and Fianna Fáil can't do that and both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have ruled out Sinn Féin, the only way to avoid a second election is for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to come together in some way, and I'd be willing to talk to Fianna Fáil about that,” he said. Mr Varadkar said Mr Martin's rejection of his offer was a “little bit arrogant and a little bit irresponsible”. “What Fianna Fáil are saying is ‘we're not going to touch Fine Gael, even though we've spent two-and-a-half years negotiating budgets with them and supporting us through confidence and supply',” he said. “So essentially, he's saying that if you don't give Fianna Fáil enough seats to form a government with the smaller centre-left parties, ‘I'm going to go off in a huff and refuse to take part in the government', and that's not a very responsible or mature position in my view,” he added.

This week, we’re heading to the micro-county of Dublin 7 to take a deep dive into the housing development saga at O’Devaney Gardens in Stoneybatter. For well over a decade, this development has had so many false starts, and within those pauses, the shenanigans keep coming. What is happening tells us a lot about planning, public land being transferred to a private developer, the de-prioritisation of social housing, the unaffordable nature of “affordable” housing, and the ineptitude of Dublin City Council, the Department of Housing, and indeed, the Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy. This week, there were more alarm bells, as Sinn Féin’s housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin published a letter Murphy sent to Dublin’s mayor indicating the project may have hit the skids again. Eoin joins us in studio to give his assessment of what is going wrong and why, as well as interrogating the housing policies Fine Gael is pursuing, and giving a pretty damning appraisal of Eoghan Murphy’s tenure. Also, we weren’t going to let this ep pass without talking about the Grafton Quarter sign, Una discusses the trend of artists banning phones at gigs, and Andrea receives a shock Dynasty-related delivery.

On Wednesday, the Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, in an ill judged interview on RTE Drivetime, attacked Focus Ireland for 'misinterpreting' his own report. The truth is they hadn't, not at all. We were delighted to sit down with Director of Advocacy for Focus Ireland, Mike Allen to discuss the housing crisis and how the "Focus Ireland Amendment", an anti-homelessness amendment that calls for an end to evictions of tenants in Buy to Let properties that are bring sold or repossessed, was one solution to what is a national emergency. While the Minister was settling scores, Mike was more interested in solutions. We hope the Minister is listening.
