Yesterday was an amazingly beautiful Florida Spring day!  Low humidity, low to mid 80's, very few clouds.  Took the family to Sebastian Park Inlet....a manmade connection between the Banana River and the ocean.  A small quite water cove.  Manatees were sighted while we were there.  Great nephew wanted waves, so a short walk over to the ocean side so he could body surf there.  Dinner at Captain Hiram's Sandbar with music entertainment while we ate.   Then we headed home for a much needed long night sleep as we all got too much sun.  So much sun that my already tanned arms and legs show signs of sunburn.  Today's adventure....looking for gators a the Lone Cabbage Airboat Rides...then back to Cocoa Village to finish the paintings that were started on Monday!  REMEMBER!  "The Best Of Hours Shows!" posted until my return to new shows on May 20th!  I always wish for you peace, love, understanding, and kindness.  May you have the week you deserve...

Episode 516: Allan Kehoe - A Randwick Win And a Track Work Spill In The Space of 5 Days

John Tapp Racing

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 48:19

Allan Kehoe has had some handy horses through his hands in twelve years as a professional trainer, but until recently a horse with that elusive X factor had never walked into his Wyong stables. Fate played a hand just over a year ago when a colt he was chasing at the Inglis Classic Sale was suddenly withdrawn by the vendor. That vendor knew of Allan's interest and called him unexpectedly a few days later.  That phone call triggered a deal which saw the Wyong horseman actually take out a three year lease on the son of freshman sire Sandbar. That colt now bearing the curious name of Shaggy is unbeaten in three starts, culminating in a dashing defeat of some hot opposition at Randwick on Feb 15th. Shaggy has lifted the profile of his hard working trainer literally overnight. I joined the media scrum last week in getting Allan to join me on the podcast just 48 hours after the talented horseman had “ bitten the dust” in a nasty spill on his private training track. He explains how the tumble happened and describes the extent of his injuries. Allan says Shaggy spent a few quiet days after the Randwick win in a spacious paddock on his Gorokan property near Wyong. He takes us back to last year's Inglis Classic Sale where he made a close inspection of the Sandbar colt, and expressed his interest to the vendor. Allan talks of the sire Sandbar who's had a flying start to his stud career thanks to the emergence of a very talented two year old in his first crop. The trainer has opted to run Shaggy in the Skyline Stakes on March 1st which leaves a three week corridor into the Golden Slipper. Allan explains how the youngster was given his curious name. He looks back on two brilliant wins at Coffs Harbour and on the Sunny Coast, and says he was quietly confident going into the Pierro Plate. The versatile horseman explains the reason why Aaron Bullock had to be replaced last minute by Adam Hyeronimus. Allan describes the facilities at his disposal on a twenty five acre property a stone's throw from Wyong racecourse where he also has 10 permanent boxes. He talks about his personal involvement in trackwork and explains that other Wyong trainers sometimes use his services. The 41 year old talks about the breaking-in and pre-training arm of his business.  He talks about his siblings and early life in Newcastle, Scone and Narromine. He looks back with gratitude on his first job and the opportunity to work with a great horseman. Allan says his four years with the late John Lundholm at Coonamble provided a great learning curve in his life. He looks back on time spent with other top horsemen in his formative years. Kehoe says his brief stint as a picnic jockey provided some of the happiest years of his racing life. Allan is proud to be a father of four. He and first wife Kelly are the parents of daughter Mikayla and son Beau who follow his progress as a trainer. He and partner Kim have a pigeon pair Mia and Jack. 14 year old Mia is displaying definite signs of considering a future as a jockey Allan looks back on the thrill of saddling up his first winner as a solo trainer in 2012, and pays tribute to some of the horses who've subsequently shaped his career. He mentions a couple who are currently in work.  Allan's been around for a long time and his reputation in the industry is a sound one. Shaggy has propelled him into new found prominence on the eve of the autumn carnival.

Everyone's favorite Mission Hills karaoke joint, the Lamplighter, has brought its talents down the hill to the Gaslamp—and so has this podcast. The team, led by fourth-generation bar owner Frankie Sciuto, launched the Gaslamplighter, a new upscale cocktail and karaoke bar, in January. Sciuto joins us on the Happy Half Hour podcast today as we check out the bar's digs. Sciuto hopes the Gaslamplighter will become the go-to spot for San Diego's nightlife scene, like its successful sister hangs, The Lamplighter and Side Bar. (In other words, it's not just a joint for tourists.) “It's an honor to follow in my family's footsteps,” he adds. “After working through the ranks in the nightlife industry from a barback to a bar owner, I am incredibly proud to bring this concept to life.” Surely you've heard that the “mob wife” aesthetic is trending on the internet? The Gaslamplighter is that brought to life, and it's a blast. Designed by GTC Design Studios, the 1,600-square-foot venue took over Ciro's Pizzeria and Beerhouse. Sciuto says the bar pairs “classic style with a vintage-industrial 1920s flare,” which he hopes invokes nostalgia for better bar-drinking and song-singing days. It's intended to look like an art-deco speakeasy, with shades of green and navy and plenty of rose-gold metal. Of course, the drinks add to the glitz and glamor. Its cocktails have a luxury bent: Picture a white negroni topped with 24-karat gold, a carajillo, and an “Instagrammable” dirty martini with caviar. Guests will also find a mocktail menu and many more options. Karaoke runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. You can sign up the old-school way by putting your name down on a sheet at the DJ booth, but you might want to warm up those vocal cords first—your rendition of “Sweet Caroline” may be followed by a surprise performance from a local underground star. Guests can book private booths or opt for bar seating, and the whole space is available for private rental. Of course, the Gaslamplighter isn't the only hot spot downtown. News today focuses on the neighborhood, especially with the Pads' home opener happening this weekend. Otay Mesa's Vega Caffe replaced Lolitas next to Petco Park with an expanded menu, and Puesto brought back cans of Clara, its 4.7 percent ABV Mexican lager, to Petco Park. Plus, the owners of Verant Group (which is behind such lauded locales as Barleymash, Mavericks Beach Club, Tavern at the Beach, and Sandbar) are opening a new hotel called Casa Nova in Valle de Guadalupe with other partners.

I've been covering food for close to two decades, and throughout my career, most of the high volume places I visit, and especially those in tourist areas, don't present menus that follow local seasons, feature local produce, or work with local farms. However, on Anna Maria Island, FL and neighboring Longboat Key, the restaurants of Chiles Hospitality Group: Beach House, Sandbar, Mar Vista, and Anna Maria Bake House, are a delicious exception. Beyond the restaurants, the company also includes Gamble Creek Farms, a certified organic farm in Parrish, FL, that supplies sustainable farm-to-fork produce to all of the restaurants, as well as composts the food waste from serving the thousands of tourists weekly. Zack Rasmussen and Natasha Ahuja are part of the leadership team of Gamble Creek, and both have extensive experience in permaculture design as well as an intense curiosity about the interrelatedness of the natural world. Begun in 2021, this 26-acre farm is still in its infancy, but a visit to Gamble Creek is already a kaleidoscope of flavor, mini ecosystems, and creative possibilities of how care for the environment and commerce can co-exist instead of being a forgone dichotomy.

Santa Cruz-born Neil Erickson is everywhere in Santa Barbara. The singer-songwriter regularly plays sets at concert venues all over town, including SOhO, Topa Topa, Sandbar, Foxtail Kitchen, The Blue Owll and James Joyce. He recently opened for American Idol superstar Jackson Gilles at concert at SOhO. In this podcast, Erickson talks about how he decided to focus on his musical dreams after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He was on track to major in journalism at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, but couldn't see himself spending his final two years of college in a Zoom setting. "After doing two years at City College, I didn't want to do two years of a four-year online," Erickson said. "I just didn't like the online and that experience that I had. It wasn't for me. It didn't work out for me." So he opted to pursue his music. His dad bought him a computer with software so that he could create, edit and produce his music. Around that time he contracted COVID-19. "I was trapped inside for 10 days," Erickson said. "Instead of playing video games, or zoning out and watching Netflix, everyday I just like wokeup and recorded and made something." With a classically trained voice in choir, passion for musical theature, Erickson focuses much of his music on love songs. Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and John Mayer are among his musical inspirations. In this podcast he walks us through the creation of one of his biggest songs, "Better With You." He has spent many days and nights walking Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, meeting managers to get booked. His sticktuitiveness has landed him many gigs, and he is not one of Santa Barbara's most sought-after local performers. "I feel that Santa Barbara is a bubble of musicians that is about to burst," Erickson said. "I have met an incredible amount of talented musicians. It's actually unreal, how many great musicians and how many people are passionate about it Santa Barbara. The former sports editor of the Santa Barbara City College said he might return to college one day, but right now he's focused on his musical career. "I want to live in Santa Barbara and make music here, and make the best possible music that I can," Erickson said. "The biggest thing for me is can I make music, do what I love and support myself. That question has been answered for me, yes I can do it. But the biggest thing, one, the goal is to make the best music I possibly can. That's the biggest thing. And two, I want to tour. There's so much of the U.S. that I haven't seen." Josh Molina has been a journalist in Santa Barbara for 20 years. He also covered City Hall for the San Jose Mercury News. In addition to working as a reporter at Noozhawk, he teaches journalism at Cal State University, Northridge and Santa Barbara City College. Please subscribe to his You Tube channel for more content. EXPAND YOUR PERCEPTION WITH DR. BEAU LOTTO: The neuroscience of how creativity, resilience and adaptability will enable you t

Adventures are not like a holiday. Holidays are planned to minimise risk. We consider the different possible destinations. We choose. We go. We stay. We return. By actively choosing to create a context of uncertainty, you are choosing to disrupt the old ecologies of the past and in doing so create the true freedom of choice. This is what an adventure does. It shepherds you into a new state of being. Sandbars are bridges into that risk. They enable the risk to be taken … and in doing so allows someone to embrace the uncertainty of themselves with courage and agency. Each of us can be a sandbar in another person's life. You too can be the place from which another person feels certain enough to take a risk in order to expand their perception. In doing so, you too will expand.
